tonight, we've learned that bacteria he had been working with killed him. new at 10:00, ktvu's amber lee is live in san francisco. she tell uses the cdc is involved in the investigation and the man's friends and coworkers are now receiving treatments. >> reporter: the 25-year-old man lived on treasure island, and worked here at the va hospital at lands end. the question is, how did he become infected. the unidentified researchers worked in building 2 here for the last six months. he was part of a research team at the va hospital, looking to develop a vaccine for the bacteria that causes a deadly bloodstream infection, or meningitis. the researcher reportedly began experiencing symptoms, such as a headache, chills and fatigue. >> it was only about 18 hours. >> reporter: the chief of

infectious disease at the va hospital told us the researcher dies from the same bacteria he had been studying. it caused him to develop a skin rash, similar to this photo, all over his body. friends brought him to the emergency room on saturday, but it was too late. hospital officials said they gave antibiotics to the people in close contact with him. >> the most common way it's spread is by sharing food, or by sharing drinks. also, if you sleep within three feet of the person, you can cough and have large particles that you can spread person to person. >> reporter: officials say antibiotics were given to five members of his lab research team. the man's girlfriend, his five roommates, and dozens of hospital workers who treated him. >> the lab is closed, and it was decontaminated, and then it was investigated by a group of researchers that couldn't find any evidence of any spills or

laboratory malfunction. >> reporter: experts say it's rare for researchers to be infected by the diseases they're studying. investigating what went wrong to make sure this doesn't happen again. live in san francisco, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> more details now about that deadly bacteria. it spreads through respiratory exposure including coughing and even kissing. this particular strain is the only one with no known vaccine. oakland police are looking for a gunman. police say the shooting may be gang related. the victim was shot in the elbow and the leg. he is expected to survive. officers say the gunman took off in a champagne colored suv. family and friends of a

missing 16-year-old girl from fairfield held a candlelight vigil tonight and prayed for her safe return. olivia medeiros has been missing. her mother says she's never gone this long without calling. >> she's always giving me a call. almost four days later, the fact that she hasn't called is quite disturbing. >> olivia's mother is now posting information on facebook in hopes someone will help her find her daughter. the class kids foundation has always contacted the family to help. the sports world was absolutely stunned to learn today former nfl star junior seau died from an apparent suicide this morning from a self-inflected gunshot. ken wayne is here and talked to a couple of 49er greats, one of whom just spoke to seau two

blast graffiti and wash down the pavement. go b.5,000 protesters took part in the various rallies -- about 5,000 protesters took part in the various rallies and protests. of the 39 people arrested in oakland, police say at least 22 of those arrested were from the bay area, including 12 from oakland. 3 are from out of state. alameda county sheriff's detectives set off an incendiary device found in a backpack yesterday. an unmarked fremont police car did burn. authorities say 11 devices were found inside that one backpack. >> these are homemade. they were brought in on purpose. there's only run reason to have something like that. that's to cause damage and destruction. >> this was the scene last night at 17th and telegraph. an officer ordered our camera

to back away. authorities say they arrested one man in connection with that pack. >> oakland police are saying they used some new tactics during yesterday's demonstration, including an effort to better communicate with protesters before things got out of hand. police say they also used cameras, you see one there to send live pictures of the demonstration back to headquarters where officials could monitor exactly what was happening on the streets. the key to crowd control, they say was to make targeted arrests of those breaking the law, without stopping the peaceful demonstrations. >> when the group came out, and started pushing back on us, we didn't immediately say, it's unlawful, get out of the area. we said you have a right to continue demonstration. please move back into the plaza. >> we did find this man today who said he was unfairly arrested, as he was riding his bike home from a birthday party. he says he was thrown in jail

only on 2, a little boy in oakland made a startling discovery in a school yard. today that little boy is taking medication to fight hiv and hepatitis. >> reporter: he was doing what little boys do, he was digging in the dirt here. it was right here during resource, where he found that used syringe. that's the bloody needle in a bio hazard bag sealed for safety. it is her son's health and

safety that elaine cruz is worried about. she says her son showed her the needle when he picked her up from the after school program last weapons. the worried mom rushed the first grader to the hospital where a blood sample was taken. doctors prescribed two medications to prevent hiv and hepatitis b and c. >> they said for the next six months they won't really know if he contracted anything, because that's how long it takes. >> reporter: cruz and the boy's father says the next six months will be filled with lots of prayers. >> my son is scared. he asked us, am i going to die? we said no, you're going to be all right. >> we made sure to enforce

'97. it was bulldozed over. >> he says the body of teri ann forcher might be buried there. searchers have not found any remains at this location, but investigators did find the remains of four women earlier this year in another area, using information from shermantine. the high profile triple murder case of a convicted gang member went to a jury today. saying the killer remains at large. prosecutors argue it was ramos who shot and killed 48-year-old anthony balogna and his sons. all three died in a drive-by shooting. prosecutors contest that ramos mistook the balogna family. a woman in her 70s was

killed this morning. the accident happened on millbray avenue on primrose. the woman drove into the ditch and then a fence. a fence board smashed through the windshield and struck the woman in the head. she was pronounced dead at the scene. continuing coverage on that being in san francisco that was taken over by occupy protesters last night. david stevenson found out, almost half of the protesters who were arrested weren't even from the city. >> reporter: just before dawn, san francisco police arrested 26 occupy movement squatters in this building owned by the archdiocese in san francisco. the arrests capped an occupation that began yesterday afternoon, and included a man who through bricks and pipes through the roofs of two

buildings. police are identifying him as jesse nesbitt. one of the bricks he allegedly threw struck and injured a fellow protester. >> hit one of our own protesters. we don't condone that violence. >> reporter: protesters released from county jail told us they tried to stop nesbitt. >> to see it happen was a bummer and tried yelling at him to stop. again, he's an autonomous individual and we can't control anything that happened. >> reporter: a spokingman told us there is no excuse for what happened here yesterday. >> to do violence like that on people, you don't know who they are down there, that kind of violence is just unconscionable. >> reporter: six of those arrested this morning were booked for a continuing

up. the north bay, expect rain or showers. light rain or showers around 1:00. then as we get into the early afternoon commute, widely scattered showers around the bay, still heaviest in the north bay. then around 6:00, it kind of moves into the south bay. this is not a big deal. 10th of an inch to a quarter inch of rain. it will have an impact on the afternoon commute tomorrow. when i come back, we'll look more in this, and look at the long range forecast and take a look at the five-day forecast with your weekend in view. the summer spare the air season started today. between now and october, bay area air managers can issue spare the air alerts when it looks as if pollution will be a problem. last year there were eight spare the air days. during that time, people in the nine bay area counties are urged to cut back on driving, using aerosol products, such as hair spray, and using gasoline powered lawn mowers. a new tactic tonight to keep the homeless away. >> police are calling it a

new at 10:00, an eighth grade boy beaten to death by a crowd of youngsters on a city playground in downtown san jose. lloyd lacuesta is live and tells us a security camera may help us find the young people responsible. >> reporter: police are describing what happened to the 14-year-old boy as a brutal beating, leading to his death. it happened friday night at around 7:00 at roosevelt park in downtown san jose. eighth grader herberto reyes had gone to play basketball at

the park. his father and uncle dropped reyes and his brother off at the park. >> 20 to 15 guys came up and said, are you a gangbanger, and he responded no. they said that they just, he just punched him. one of the guys just punched him. he just got knocked out in one second. and they just started beating him up. >> reporter: classmate natalie valdez says the boy's brother, uncle, and father were also beaten when they came to his aid. the boy was in a coma over the weekend, and died monday night. officials say their security cameras recorded about 15 to 20 people running from the basketball courts. police say they want people who were there to come forward and talk to them. everyone we tried to talk to at the park tonight said they knew nothing. police are calling the homicide gang related. >> we know there are people there that can help us with

crucial information that may help us solve this murder. >> reporter: she is no stranger to youth violence. >> i'm just shocked. i lost a friend last year, tara. she was 14, she got shot. >> reporter: police say reyes was the 13th homicide victim of the year in san jose. five were gang related. live in san jose, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu, channel 2 news. san francisco's bill graham civic auditorium has found a solution to homeless people camping out on its doorstep. the operators of the auditorium are using the sound of jackhammers and chainsaws to drive people away. no actual jackhammers are being used, they're just recordings. one homeless man said the noise is unpleasant, and irritating.

only a couple of people are within ear shot now. the low cost airline just created a base, and with that new base comes new jobs. 60 of them acourting to aliegent. the airplane will keep planes in oakland, on top of service to arizona and washington state. it was a mixed day on wall street. the dow industrials dropped 10 points on concerns that u.s. job growth is not as robust as hoped for. an unknown buyer has paid a record price of nearly $120 million for an oil painting. it happened tonight at an auction in new york city. the painting is the masterpiece, the scream. the scream is one of the most recognized images in the world. a symbol of human anxiety. this is one of four versions and the only one in private hands. the seller is a norwegian man

streets of san francisco, but it may not be above a powerful state agency that is now quietly investigating this company. >> i was exposed to it through an advertising company and uber was one of the companies. >> reporter: just the kind of person, the upstart taxi company, uber markets too. >> they put their best foot forward. owl the drivers were in tuxedos. they gave us a $20 ride for free, which got me ten blocks. >> reporter: the president of the san francisco cab drivers association has a one word description of uber. >> bandits. >> reporter: even taxi cab drivers agree, there aren't enough cabs in the city, but they still say uber is cheating. >> they're not paying permit fees like cab drivers do.

they have no set fees. town cars and uber cab basically charge what they want to charge. they're twice as much as cabs, but they can sometimes add more on their website it says surcharges can be applied. >> reporter: critics also charge them with not having meters in their town cars like cabs do. not having permits, or proven to have $1 million insurance per car, like taxi cabs are required. we have to tell you we repeatedly attempted to get the uber founder to provide us his perspective on his company. he refused to talk to us. we do know after he dropped out of college, he started at least two other software companies before uber. one was sold for almost $20 million, and promptly ceased operating. the second company was led to a lawsuit. >> we want to have more ubers in the city than there are

taxis. we are going to dominate every city that we go into. >> reporter: the san francisco based company is going into new york, chicago, boston, seattle, and european cities next. the problems are starting to arise in many of those places though. the same kind of problems first seen here in san francisco. >> they initially call themselves uber cab. and we issued a cease and desist order. >> reporter: paul roads is the spokesperson for the city transportation agency. he also acknowledges there are an insufficient number of taxi permits in the city. prompting companies such as uber to come to san francisco. >> we're working on ways we can increase the number. >> reporter: for potential customers, the bloom may already be off uber's rose. >> if you're not covering itself, and it is a business expense, and you want to impress clients, or you're on a date and you want to impress

your date, it's totally a great service. it is a luxury. for day-to-day, getting around the city for the average san franciscan, which most of us are, we can't afford that. >> as we investigated, we learned that the california public utilities commission has launched its own investigation into uber because it's an official probe, regulators declined to comment on what could happen to the company or travis. california could become the first state to ban employers from asking for social media passwords. there have been reports around the country of such requests. the assembly labor committee passed a bill unanimously today, making private information behind password protected walls off limits to employers. california university campuses have voted in favor of going on strike. 95% of the california faculty association voted to authorize strikes if no contract can be reached. the union is prompting a series

of rolling strikes. negotiations are still going on. talks are scheduled for tomorrow and friday. some u.s. college students could soon see interest rating double on their loans. the problem is that rate is set to expire on july 1. unless congress does something, the rates will double to 6.8%. bay area congresswoman anna eschew said the only alternative offered in congress is to take money from preventive healthcare funds. >> we can do better than that. even with closing the corporate loopholes for big oil and gas that can pay for this. >> reporter: she also said it's likely that community college students are the ones who have the fewest options when it comes to financial aid. it looks like californians will have the chance to vote on whether to require labels

identifying food that contains genetically modified ingredients. supporters of the ballot initiative say they have some 971,000 signatures. far more than needed to qualify for the november ballot. the measure would require labeling foods made with bio tech corn, soybeans or other genetically engineered crops. many food companies oppose the bill saying it would be costly and confusing to consumers. some bar owners are threatening to fight back. the move stems from recent late night alcohol fueled violence. the city council unanimously passed a bill last night. some owners say a lot of problems are not their fault, and they may file suit. a major league pitcher threw a no-hitter tonight. a bit later, mark ibanez will be here to tell us who is at

prosecutors in florida charged 13 people today in the hazing death of a college drum major in one of the biggest cases of its kind. two students were taken into custody in tallahassee. the others are expected to follow. authorities say champion was beaten repeatedly as part of hazing from florida a and m university. an accident happened in 2010 when an amphibious duck boat became disabled on the water. the lawsuit claims the captain did not ask for help or advise passengers to put on life beths. the problem cause of the accident was the tugboat driver being distracted. a federal lawsuit filed against john yu.

the suit was filed by jose padilla. yu worked for the bush administration, and authored the harsh interrogation for terror suspects. yu is protected from such laws, because the laws defining torture weren't clear when his memoirs weren't written. the u.s.ambassador said chen was not pressured to leave. in afghanistan, attack of a compound where many westerners live. at least eight people, including two afghan school children were killed.

17 others were wounded. the taliban claimed responsibility. workers say the attackers wore burkas. spirit airlines has announced a price hike for carry-on luggage that could cost some passengers as much as $100 a bag. that same bag would cost $50 if paid for at the ticket counter, and $35 paid for online before checking in. spirit says it only charges for bags that go in overhead bins. small bags that go under seats are still free. the bart worker fired for giving away tickets so a

thousands of wires that make up the suspension on the bay area bridge were compacted into one. the tedious process by both man and machine. >> reporter: this is called compacting. compacting precisely aligning and shaping the wires that make up the bay bridge suspension cable requires both a human touch and brute machine power. this critical process gives the massive two and a half foot wide suspension cable maximum strength. >> you want every one of the wires to be parallel, so they don't dig in. >> reporter: each one of these wires can hold up the weight of an army humvee. there are 17,399 of those wires to hold up a bridge. the truly final work is done by four huge moving circular vices called compacters. using enormous force, the jacks

compress the 127 wires that make up 137 sub cables into this single final round cable. >> then there are six 300-ton jacks that press down on it to form it into the cylindrical shape it needs to be in. >> reporter: all of it will be overlined with four different processes of the latest in anti- corrosion protection systems. >> those four layers will protect this cable for over a century. >> reporter: it will be completed labor day weekend of next year. ktvu, channel 2 news. four senators in washington, d.c. are trying to delay the closing of thousands of post offices. the postal service is scheduled to begin shutting down some 3700 post offices in two weeks. the senators say those closures would cost too many jobs.

it will give them more time to reach a compromise to help the postal service. a conservative group is targeting jcpenney, because they're using a lesbian couple in an advertisement. the group 1 million mothers is criticizing jcpenney, for as they say it, taking a side in the cultural war. the group threatened to boycott jcpenney after the group appointed ellen degeneres as its spokesperson. in all, 7500 pet lover plates have to be sold before they can be made. governor jerry brown along with his welsh corgi announced he's going to give the campaign a little more time. money from the sales of the plates will go toward free or low cost spay or neuter
