they don't want anybody out walking the street it's an active operation. little crazy this morning. >> breaking news from petted luma, three federal agents injured moments after the sounds of gunfire and an explosion. team coverage straight ahead on mornings on 2! . good morning to you. welcome to mornings on 2. it is thursday, may 3rd. we're following breaking news in petaluma. three special agents with ice's homeland security were injured while serving a high risk warrant. it unfolded on mcdowell boulevard at mcneil around 4 a.m. ktvu's tara moriarity is live on the scene where a suspect was taken into custody. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we're here at the scene and we're kept arm's length away from everything going down.

you can see the presence of law enforcement right here, and as we understand three ice agents were injured on a high risk search warrant, all have non- life-threatening injuries. we're also learned that one suspect is in custody. the agents targeted the home -- the third house down on the right, the blue one, with the gold suv parked outside. again, three agents were taken to nearly hospitals, one had to be airlifted. and after the operation turned sour, just after 4:00 this morning, nearby residents were evacuated. we spoke to the general manager of the motel that bullets up against the property and he heard loud booms and told people to stay inside their rooms. >> we heard a couple loud bangs, and then we heard some yelling and some shots fired. >> now after talking with my sources inside of ice, i'm told this was a planned gang sweep operation related to an ongoing

criminal investigation. and it was considered high risk because it went down before 6:00 this morning. normally agents do sweeps between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. so to do one at this hour is rare. so agents knew there could be potential problems. a s.w.a.t. team was brought in prior to the operation happening. so it's a good thing they did that. again, back out here live, we are actually on south mcdowell boulevard and the street is blocked off from east washington down here past south mcdowell. across the street there's a sort of shopping center with a safeway and a bunch of things in there to give you some sort of reference point. but again, three agents injured while serving this high risk warrant that the good news is we're told that they are all considered non-life-threatening injuries. one suspect in custody. tara moriarity, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage and you can also follow us on facebook. alex will join us late with

more or not three officers injured in the operation. and this is not the only incident involving a federal agent. in a developing story from southern california, a 40-year- old immigration and customs enforcement agent has been shot and killed. authorities detained his 14- year-old son in connection to the shooting, and just moments ago we got confirmation the son was arrested this morning. the shooting happened after 9:00 last night in the family's home in carson in los angeles county. no word yet on a motive. it's a story you'll see only on 2. a little oakland boy made a startling discovery in a school yard. now he is taking medication it fight hiv and hepatitis. claudine wong joins us to tell us what happened and why parents are so upset. claudine. >> reporter: there are two parts to this story. first the discovery. this syringe was found in this yard, this is the highland

children's center, a pre-school and daycare. but the second part is how the oakland school district responded to the discovery. the parents aren't happy about that either. the 7-year-old was here after school last wednesday, apparently killing in the yard when he found a used syringe. >> i picked it up, and the lid was off and i poked myself. >> his mom says he told his teachers who washed his hands and determined he was fine, but when she got there to pick him up, the syringe was still in his pocket and she took him to the hospital, where doctors put him on medications for hiv and hepatitis. medication has to stay on for six months, just in case. the area was then taped off but the little boy's parents say the kids are still playing there. >> and i seen kids playing by the tape, in the area. >> all around here? >> all around here! so this is not taken serious. >> i believe there's some questions as to why we didn't clean the area more thoroughly

initially, but at this point there have been two substantial cleanings and we have made sure to reinforce that there be a daily sweep of the grounds by custodial staff to prevent a recurrence in the future. >> reporter: the district is apologizing for its response and how long it took to clean. the first thorough cleaning didn't happen until monday. this incident happened last wednesday. it was apparently cleaned again yesterday. and take a look here this morning just within the last few seconds here, crew came out here with more cleaning supplies. we're told this will be a daily thing, they'll try to reup their efforts to make sure they come out here and check through this as often as possible. it does remain taped off. parents, the other parents that go to do school, have not been notified yet. but a letter is expected to go out today. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. just an hour ago, documents

were seized in the raid on osama bin laden's compound in pakistan were posted online. our washington, d.c. newsroom is reading them and examining the documents right now. coming up at 7:15, we'll tell you what they show about bin laden's state of mind in the months before he was killed. back at home, santa rosa police may soon make an arrest in a church vandalism case. the church of the incarnation on mendocino avenue was tagged with satanic graffiti yesterday afternoon. this picture of a vandalized church sign is from the santa rosa press democrat. investigators believe the same vandal also tagged other buildings in santa rosa this week, including another church. police reportedly close to tracking down the suspect. this morning bay area church leaders will gather at 14th and broadway in downtown oakland. they will hold a vigil denouncing the violence that took place in the same area

during monday's mayday demonstration. police made dozens of arrests during clashes with occupy demonstrators. organizers of today's prayer vigil say they support any movement that is designed to help the poor. but they say many of these protestors are hurting the people they claim they're trying to help. the seven people killed at oakland's oikos university one month ago will be remembered in a vigil tonight, beginning at 8:00. dozens of people from church groups if schools across the bay area are expected to attend. el cerrito police learning about several players last week. one home was hit wives to. the thieves stole motorcycles, a trailer and some tools. the police are offering free home security inspections after in the wake of these burglaries. they're also warning residents

communications. west point's combatting terrorism center released 17 of the thousands of documents seized at bin laden's compound. the center is translated them into english and posted the original versions in arabic. reading through his letters, we can see he was definitely worried about dysfunction in the terrorist network, but he was still focused on attacking the united states. he wanted al-qaeda to assassinate president obama. one of the only reporters who was in bin laden's compound after the raid wrote several books about bin laden, talked about the treasure trove of information this morning. >> the white house and the national security council releasing documents that don't put al-qaeda in a good light. it's interesting to realize that they themselves realize they were under pressure. >> one of the documents is this 22-page typed listing of names

has been missing five days. yesterday her family held a vigil and prayed for her safe return. now she was last seen saturday night at the home of her father, and a neighbor says she saw the girl get into a silver car. oakland police investigating the possibility that the weekend murder of a transgender woman was a hate crime. 37-year-old brandy martell was shot and killed while sitting in a parked car with three friends early sunday morning. martell was from hayward, and until last year worked in fremont as an outreach worker for transgender people. so far, no arrests have been made. a few minutes ago, police confirmed the identity of the gunman in a suspected murder/suicide in arizona. police found the bodies of two men, two women and a baby inside a phoenix area home

yesterday. police say the alleged gunman was a former marine running for sheriff. investigators say the shooting may have been the result of a domestic swigs. earlier we told but a suspicious liquid found in the backyard that slowed down the investigation. police now say that liquid does not pose a threat. a new jersey mother is denying accusations she put her six-year-old daughter in a tanning bed. yesterday a very bronzed patricka krentcil pleaded not guilty to child endangerment charges. a school teacher noticed the girl was sunburned and she said she was tanning with her mother. krentcil says she's taken for daughter to a tanning salon but never inside a booth. she says her daughter got sun pushed in the backyard. a case believed to be an

attempted suicide may actually be a burglary attempt. palo alto online is reporting police found a man bleeding profusely on the street monday night. he was taken to the hospital for mental and physical evaluations. police tracked the blood to a nearby mexican restaurant and they found a broken window and a screwdriver next to a damaged cash register. authorities believe that suspect hurt himself trying to run away, but he collapsed after losing a lot of blood. police in pleasant hill have arrested three teenagers after several burglaries in one neighborhood. police say they got a call yesterday morning about three suspicious people looking over fences in the area of byron court and stevenson driver. they found one. suspects near the intersection of stevenson and oak park boulevard. they later found two suspects in a home on oak park boulevard. the suspects are two 14-year- olds and a 13-year-old.

a shooting in the parking lot of a dmv office in oakland may be gang-related. according to police, the gunman is still on the loose this morning. it happened in broad daylight at the dmv office at 85th and e around 2:00 yesterday. investigators say a man was shot in the arm and leg. he is expected to survive. police say the gunman drove off in a champagne colored suv. no one else was hurt. once again, a videotaped police beating has ignited a controversy. >> get down! >> one tape of this incident shows officers using batons to repeatedly beat an unarmed suspect in downtown stockton. critics say the police officers used excessive force on a man accused of being drunk in public. however, another video taken just moments earlier may help explain the officers' actions. the tape from a store owner shows the suspect apparently trying to grab an officer's gun

investigation. the agents were targeting a home on south mcdowell boulevard at mcneil. according to ice, the agents are now being treated at the hospital for non-life- threatening injuries. we want to go live to ktvu's alex savage, talking with neighbors about what they heard when the violence erupted. alex. >> reporter: good morning, tori. neighbors in this area say they heard some loud bangs early this morning around 4:00, and also quite a bit of gunfire, all from this house, the second house, blue house up on the right here. this is near mcdowell and mcneil. this was the search warrant that was being served at this home around 4:00 this morning. immigration and customs enforcement agents execute what they refer to as a high risk search warrant, related to a gang investigation. we understand from sources neighbors say they heard several loud bangs coming from the home. we do know the s.w.a.t. team was involved in this situation. and we do know that several of the three agents who were

apartments off east 14th street. alameda county sheriff's deputies say the woman was shot in the arm. they closed off the complex, believing the gunman was still inside. so far, though, no arrests having been made. oakland police also investigating a shooting, this one happened on edes avenue at 9 last night. a man was shot and injured. right now it's not clear what led up to the shooting. investigators say the gunman ran away, still on the loose. san jose police hope surveillance video can help them find the people who beat a 14-year-old boy to death. it happened around 7:00 friday night at roosevelt park. police say he was dropped off at the park by his father. minutes later the 8th grader was repeatedly punched and kicked by suspected gang members. police say security cameras recorded about 15 to 20 people running from the basketball courts after the attack.

a classmate of his says she's shocked by what happened. >> 20 to 15 guys come up to him and say, are you a gang-banger? and he responded, no. and they say they just -- he just punched him, one of guys just punched him. he got knocked out in one second. >> reyes was in a coma through the weekend and died monday night. he was a student at bernal school in south san jose. he left work on friday. the next day he was dead. pam cook is in the newsroom with the story a scientist who may have died from his work. good morning, pam. >> reporter: good morning. a researcher dead after becoming infected by a bacteria he was studying in a san francisco lab. the 25-year-old unidentified man worked at the va hopped at lands end, part of a team developing a vaccine for

meningitis. after he left work on friday he started having headaches and chills. the chief at the hospital says within 18 hours of showing symptoms, the young man was dead. >> the lab was closed and it was decontaminated, and then it was investigated by a group of researchers that couldn't find any evidence of any spills or any laboratory malfunction. >> five members of the man's research team have been given antibiotics as well as dozens of hospital workers who treated him. his girlfriend and five roommates who lived with him on treasure island are also being treated. the centers for disease role and cal osha are both investigate this is incident. two california dairy farms quarantined now as part of the investigation into mad-cow disease found in central valley. government claims there's no threat to the food supply, and that this move is standard procedure. now the infected cow was found

at a dairy last month. a calf that was born to that infected cow tested negative for the disease. the usda wants to know if there are any at-risk cows at a second farm associated with that dairy. it might just be the worst sun to come from san francisco's bill graham civic auditorium. you hear that? it's new video we just shot awhile ago. the operators of the auditorium have come up with a noisy solution to try to keep homeless people from camping out and sleeping on their doorsteps. the chronicle reports between 11 at night and 7 in the morning, the sound of jackhammers, chainsaws, and motorcycla revving up will be played there. one homeless man says it's a very irritating noise. so far only a couple people are sleeping anywhere within earshot now. >> kind of a clever option

there. all right. we want to check in with sal. what is going on in contra costa county? >> it's busy, the heart of the commute on highway 4 and 680 and 24. and you can see here in lafayette, our picture showing us the traffic is a little busy towards the bart station. it gets better then slows again on the way up to the tunnel. but fortunately, there haven't been any problems in the way of crashes there. let's move along and take a look at the commute westbound bay bridge at the toll plaza. it's backed up for about a 10 to 15 minute delay. no major problems getting into the city. and if you're driving on the nimitz 880, plus after 238, some slow traffic heading town the fremont and no problems on 237. but once you get to 237, and 101, it's been slow. we've been noting one our tweeters told us that. thank you, janis. northbound 101 traffic is busy as well, approaching 880. now to steve. >> thank you, sal.

good morning, every. mostly cloudy, system in mend encino county although drizzles made it to santa rosa and sausalito. 80s on monday. remember those? no! they'll be back. probably not until sunday but today the coolest day of the week. monday was the warmest. now temperatures sliding down. we had to cool breezy conditions, but at least it was sunny to mostly sunny yesterday. today though looks cloudy to mostly cloudy. our system doesn't have much left to it but it's still holing together. still a band offshore that will sweep through. so light drizzle, light rain north bay on the coast and anything that makes it this afternoon would be brief but -- hold on -- right there. still holding together. now i mention this, and this could be the last system in the series or for the season, because the 10 day outlook is dry, the 15 day outlook to third week of may is a cool pattern but getting late in the season for any rain so this system may be one of last to show up. but not much showing up on live

reported suicide. the investigation into the death in oceanside this morning. matt. >> reporter: lot of questions, good morning. and the mood here in oceanside where he lived where he grew up is very sad this morning. this is what it looked like in front of his beachside home, this memorial is growing by the minute. junior seau died apparent suicide in his oceanside home here yesterday. his girl friend made the discovery and called 911. police say it appears that seau shot himself in the chest. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the 43-year-old former linebacker played for the chargers, miami dolphins and new england patriots. off the field he was a philanthropist, started the junior seau foundation, a non- profit, profit to help kids at risk. he also opened several local restaurants with his name, and he was a big part of this community. i have carlos here. carlos why, was it so important to be here in front of his home

good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. it is thursday and, may 3rd. we're following breaking news in petaluma. early morning confrontation sent three special agents with i.c.e.'s homeland security to the hospital with injuries. it all happened while they were serving a high risk warrant at a home on mcdowell boulevard. ktvu's tara moriarity is there, so what do you know now, tara? >> reporter: i confirmed with my i.c.e. insures this was part of a gang sweep. if you look behind me, you can

see the scene here. agents were targeting a couple places in the bay area, including a home in south san francisco. that blue house there is where agents busted through the garage door, windows were also blown out. witnesses heard a lot of gunfire. we are told three agents suffered gunshot wounds but are expected to survive their injuries. one suspect is in custody, and earlier this morning you can see it smoke coming out of the house here off mcneil avenue, which crosses south mcdowell. this unfolded after 4:00 this morning, when special agents with i.c.e.'s homeland security investigation served a high risk search warrant. they staked out the house from all sides. you can see them poised with guns in the backyard. and on the east washington offramp, off 101 near the best western inn. senator neighbors nearby were evacuated. one mother told us agents ordered her to run out of the house. she grabbed her baby and was able to get out safely. guests at the best western were told not to leave their rooms. our sources with i.c.e.

immigration agents has been shot and killed. here's the new video taken earlier this morning of the agent's house. it's about 20 miles south of downtown los angeles. authorities have arrested his 14-year-old son in connection with that attack. they say the agent was shot in the head, the budget fired through a window from the bayard of the house. at this point, there's no word on a motive. a letter is being sent to some oakland parents today. that's after a 7-year-old boy found a used syringe at a school playground. call dean wong is live with a story you'll only see on 2. >> reporter: that letter is connected to go out today. this is highland chirps center, and in the last hour we have been watching crews here cleaning up. the letter is supposed to let people know about the syringe found in the dirt in this yard. you can see piles of where they've been raking this morning. and in the meantime the boy who

bin laden and to him. his associates refer to him as sheikh in several of the letters. within of the documents is a long letter from bin laden written about a year before he was killed. calling for al-qaeda to assassinate president obama and general david petraeus. the head of central command at the time. bin laden said he wants biden possible president, he says he is unrelied for that post, which will lead the u.s. into a crisis. as for petraeus, he is the man of the hour in this last year of the war, killing him would al teenager the war ate path. and that letter he also calls on al-qaeda to abandon plans to launch attacks that would kill muss muslim civilians. he was clearly worried about al- qaeda's reputation and his reputation in the muslim world. of course, these are the documents that the white house deemed okay to release. there are still thousands of other documents from the compound that we may never get to see.

there's ann update to the story involving a bart worker who lost his job for giving a young student unused tickets. you may recall the agent reportedly gave out the tickets because the boy couldn't afford the ride to school. the student's grandfather says an anonymous donor offered to pick up the cost of getting the boy to class until he graduates next year. as for the fired bart worker, he is appealing the decision. a shooting in the parking lot of a dmv office in oakland may be gang-related. the gunman still on the loose this morning. this happened in broad daylight at the dmv office at 85th and edes, about 2:00 yesterday afternoon. investigators say a man was shot in the arm and the leg. he is expected to survive. police say the gunman drove away in a champagne colored suv. no one else was hurt. once again, a videotaped police beating has ignited a

controversy. now what you're looking at one tape shows police using batons to repeatedly beat an unarmed suspect. this in downtown stockton. critics say the police officers used excessive force on the man, who is accused of being drunk in public. however, there's another video taken just moments earlier that may help explain the officers' actions. the tape is from a store owner, shows the suspect apparently allegedly trying to grab the policeman's gun during a scuffle. the 34-year-old parolee was treated and released from the hospital. now he is in jail, facing charges of resisting arrest and other very serious charges. stockton police and the county district attorney say they there closely review both tapes in this investigation. a new town car service in san francisco is raising eyebrows. the company is called huber and

san francisco police say there were plenty of out-of- towners arrested during the raid on the occupy church building on turk street. it's a story we reported live early yesterday morning as it happened. police in riot gear arrested more than two dozen occupy movement squatters who had taken over the building, which is owned by the catholic church. investigators say 11 of the 26 people arrested do not even

with chase quickdeposit. just snap a picture, hit send and done. take a step forward and chase what matters. time for is 8:30. we have an update on the breaking news from petaluma. one suspect in custody after three special agents with i.c.e.'s homeland security were hurt this morning. this hand about 4 a.m. while those agents were serving a high risk federal warrant. they were targeting a home on south mcdowell boulevard at mcneil. according to i.c.e., the agent's injuries are non-life- threatening. let's go to ktvu's alex savage at petaluma valley hospital right now we know one injured agent is being treated. and you talked with neighbors about what they heard with all this going on. what did they say? >> reporter: certainly a chaotic morning for them.

they heard loud bangs and gunfire. but those three federal agents all expected to survive after that morning raid at a home here in petaluma that turned into a shooting. one of the injured agents brought here to the hospital earlier this morning. the other two taken to santa rosa memorial hospital nearby. an i.c.e. spokesperson says all three agents have non-life- threatening injuries and this morning from chopper 2, we watched as paramedics worked on the injured agents outside the home. this all started about 4:00 this morning when agents from i.c.e.'s homeland security investigation unit served high risk search warrant at a home in petaluma. something though went wrong. neighbors we talked to heard loud bangs, several rounds of gunfire as well. and we talked with the manager of a hotel nearby who says he surprised by what happened. >> it's all pretty quiet. this is petaluma. doesn't happen in petaluma. so it's been a crazy morning for us in this community. it normally doesn't happen.

a young scientist dies after working with a deadly bacteria in a san francisco lab. ktvu's pam cook in our newsroom and the investigation begins into what went wrong. >> reporter: very scary story, especially for the more than 60 people who came into contact with this young man before he died. his name has not been released. but he is described as a 25- year-old biology major who just joined the laboratory at the veterans administration hospital in october. he was part of a team developing a advantage vaccine for the bacteria that starts meningitis. >> the onset of symptoms until he passed away it was only about 18 hours. >> a state laboratory has confirmed he was infected with the same bacteria that he had

been handling at the laboratory for the past few months. members of his research team have now been given antibiotics and 60 hospital workers who treated him before he died. the chief of infectious diseases at the hospital where he worked said the lab was decontaminated and investigated by a group of researchers who so far could not find any evidence of any spills or any other what he calls laboratory malfunctions. the centers for disease control and cal osha are investigating. police in san jose hope surveillance video could help them find the people who beat a 14-year-old boy to death. it happened at roosevelt park friday night about 7:00. police say roberto rayes was dropped off at the park by his father. minutes later, the student was repeatedly punched and kicked by suspected gang members. police say security cameras recorded about 15 to 20 people

today. 35-year-old ben luc is expected of killing people in the ingleside neighborhood and pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. a judge could set a hearing date during today's hearing. jury deliberations continue today in the shooting death of a san francisco father and two of his sons during closing arguments yesterday the defense proclaimed edwin ramos' innocence, saying someone else fired the deadly shots. ramos is accused of killing anthony bologna and his 16 and 20-year-old sons back in 2008. prosecutors say ramos mistook the family for a rival gang member. el cerrito police alerting residents about burglaries there in the past week. one home was hit twice. the thieves reportedly stem motorcycles, a trailer and some tools. police are offering free home security inspections in the

posted online. the documents show bin laden was focused on coming up with plots to kill american leaders, including president obama. a letter will be sent home today to oakland parents, one week after a 7-year-old boy found a used syringe on a school playground at highland children's center. the child is now taking medication to fight and prevent hiv and hepatitis. and three special agents with i.c.e.'s home lan security were injured in an early morning confrontation that happened in petaluma. tara moriarity is there at the scene and tells us this happened as those agents were serving high risk warrants. tara. >> reporter: that's right, we have confirmed with our i.c.e. sources this was part of a gang sweep, three agents were shot. we have learned one of them was in the arm, all are considered non-life-threatening. agents were targeting a couple of spots in the bay area, all at the same time. one of them was down the

peninsula, another in south san francisco. you can see that there's a south san francisco patrol car here. behind that i don't know if you can see it because the agents have sort of parked their vehicles in front of the home there that was targeted as a blue house, it's still an active scene here. we saw agents go through a busted garage door to gather evidence and witnesses we spoke to heard a lot of gunfire. we know one suspect is in custody, and earlier this morning you could see the smoke coming out of the house here off mcneil avenue, which crosses south mcdowell. this all unfolded after 4:00 this morning, when special agents with i.c.e.'s homeland security investigation served a high risk search warrant. you can see it them poised with guns. neighbors were evacuated, guests at best western were told not to leave their rooms. our i.c.e. sources tell us it was a planned gang sweep operation reeled to a criminal
