friday, may 4th. we begin with a developing story from sfo. a security breach is causing delays at security checkpoints. >> it wasn't a breach of security, but fortunately there was no problem with the facility or anything else. as far as procedural breakdown. but right now we're getting people rescreening to get them in on their flights as soon as we can. >> this is a photo taken by a passenger waiting to be rescreened. around 3:30 or 4:00 this morning, a man without authorization entered terminal 3, which handled united airlines. dogs were brought in to sweep the area, which included rest rooms and restaurants. nothing was found, and no one was arrested. however, an airport spokesman tells us delays may not be cleared up until midday. in east bay, someone set a houses on fire with three people inside. no one was seriously hurt but the person responsible still

has not been caught. alex savage is live near hayward, where geraldo getting a better look at the damage. good morning, am ex. >> reporter: good morning to you, tori. people in this home behind me staying elsewhere after the fire. the front windows are all boarded up and there are holes that have been punched in the roof to release the smoke. someone doused the home with gas p intentionally set it on fire last night. investigators say several neighbors spotted a man holding a gas cannon the front porch. three people inside at the time, including a vietnam veteran, who is a double amputee. fire crews had to rescue him and he's being treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital. his two caregivers jumped out the side windows to escape and firefighters rescued three kittens from the house. alameda county fire department says the man who started this fire hotched into a waiting suv that sped off. this morning a motor for the crime is unclear but the people who live here don't know why they would be targeted.

>> i heard -- like that. i heard a big pop. and then i seen flames. >> what did you do? >> reacted. >> how it you react? >> with water and a bucket, just started trying to put it out. >> reporter: interestingly enough, just back in november there were two other suspicious fires in this neighborhood. in fact, at the strip mall that's just across the street from the home, both of those fires in two separate businesses were determined to be arson. and as we come back here live, you can see just how close the strip mall is to the home. we don't know this morning if investigators are looking at any connection. the strip mall is there. the home is here across the way. we don't know if investigators are looking at a connection here but we have calls in, check to go see if maybe they're looking at any similarities between those crimes. alex savage, ktvu channel 2

news. an east bay private school set to close for good in june may now shut down even earlier. a hearing about this will start in a couple hours. ktvu's claudine wong is love in el cerrito at wind rush school, and its future is not certain. >> reporter: that's right, dave. we're at wind rush, where the gates have just opened here. as we inch closer to the end of the school year, they're open for yet another day. the last day here is set for june 7th, but right now the question is, will this school be allowed to stay open until then? this morning that decision will be in the hands of a judge there. is no doubt that wind rush, after 35 years, is going to close. that's been decided for months, after the school defaulted on $13 million in bonds and wasn't able to raise enough funds to stay open. but then the school and wells fargo reached an agreement to allow to stay open until june 7th, the last day of school. >> less than two weeks.

>> depressing. 30 years, i've been here. and always been -- i walk through here every day. >> here's the issue. keeping wind rush hope has been a battle. the school wants to let the kids finish the year. but they made an agreement to turn over revenue and stick to a budget, and wells fargo says the school keeps violating that agreement. wells fargo accuses that of them again. they gave them 30 days to close, may 17th the closure date. the school, however, is saying they didn't violate the agreement after all, they are going to the court so the judge has agreed to take a look at the case to see both sides, and he'll do that at 9:30 this morning. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. angry about layoffs and education budget cuts, san francisco teachers are considering a strike vote.

united educators of san francisco will meet next thursday, may 10th. members will decide whether to hold a second meeting to vote on whether to tell union leaders to call a strike. the union says they're hoping to avoid going on picket lines. members hope the school district will instead settle a fair contract with them. friends are becoming foes in the debate over medical marijuana. house democratic leader nancy pelosi is criticizing the obama administration for cracking down on medical marijuana suppliers here in california. she says the hard-line stance threatens the safety of patients and furthers their suffering. the chronicle reports in the past 16 years about 300 dispensaries in california, including five in san francisco, have been shut town fearing federal prosecution. as we've been reporting new unemployment figures released this morning show u.s.

employers pulled back on hiring in april for the second straight month. labor department says employers added 115,000 jobs in april, but that's less than the 160,000 expected. still the unemployment rate fell from 8.2 to 8.1%, mainly because less people were looking for work. coming up at 7:15, we'll find out what these numbers mean to the presidential race. more wetlands would be restored under a revised plan for the salt works site in redwood city. the developers plans to snit a scaled down proposal. it would limit construction to a part of the cargo salt flats site that is designated for future urban use by the city's general plan. but city planning officials say the designation is open for interpretation. original plans call for up to 12,000 homes, schools and commercial space. caltrain is considering a plan to increase its current

weekday train service. the board is looking at a mill budget that includes money for six more trains to run on the current weekday schedule. supporters say the average weekday ridership has jumped for 20 months in a row. and more trains could help relieve overcrowding during the peak rush hours. but critic say caltrain is still facing long-term money problems, with no dedicated source of funding. speaking of commute, let's check in with sal. looking kind of friday light? >> in some areas for sure. good morning once again. first traffic report for mornings on 2. we'll show you things here, traffic is going to be just a little better than normally is on highway 4, coming up to the win low pass grade. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, it's lighter than usual. no problems. metering lights are on but should be turned off if this stays this light. and this morning's commute in livermore valley looks nice, getting up to the south bay as we move the maps down here.

the missile defense shield is aimed at dealing with potential threats from iran, and not russia. it's only been out for about an hour, but republicans are seizing on the labor department's new jobs report this morning to slam the way president obama handles the economy. ktvu's allison burns in our washington, d.c. newsroom to tell us how -- what the numbers are first, but also how both sides are spinning them. allison. >> reporter: dave, there was definitely a slowdown in higher laguna month. let's take a look here at the information from the latest labor department report. 115,000 jobs were added to the economy. that's almost 50,000 fewer than economists were expecting. but as more people stopped looking for work, the unemployment rate kicked down to 8.1% for april, from 8.2% in march. now, here's house speaker john boehner's reaction on at which time they're morning.

18th, under the symbol fb. a federal judge ruled that clicking the like button on facebook is not protected speech. the virginia case involves six people who were fired by a sheriff during a re-election campaign. one of the workers had liked the facebook page. sheriff's opponent. the judge ruled that did not qualify as expressive speech, and those workers were not protected. some legal experts say this case may end up before the u.s. supreme court. we're learning more about a transgender woman shot to death in oakland. 37-year-old brandy martell was shot and killed early sunday morning while sitting in a park car near 13th and franklin streets. she was born as milton macey but identified as a woman. martell's sister says her brother was careful about where he went and who he socialized with. >> my brother, he deserving of first -- find the killer and

rest in peace, us as a family want justice. we deserve that. >> no arrest have been made but the investigation continues and police say they're still looking for a motive. remember that big bear, the one who became an instant internet sensation? he's died. last week millions watch the photo and the video this, the black bear on the university of colorado campus. it's a 280-pound bear, fell out of the tree after being tranquilized. it fell on to a soft cushion right there. park rangers say that same bear died yesterday morning. it was hit by a car on a highway in colorado. another controversy has emerged for a federal agency that involves government spending and this one actually is about an attempt to hire a magician to teach leadership skills. jamie dupree joins us from washington, d.c. with what the agency did to avoid even the appearance of a scandal.

morning, jamie. >> reporter: good morning, tori. a few weeks ago we had a dust up over the gsa convention in las vegas. not only did they spend a lot of money, they had a mind reader, practice gigs, and so you thought some things might have been just a red alert for other people in the federal government. but no, noaa whose headquarters outside d.c. put up an ad on a special website where you can look at jobs and different contracts that asked for a magician to do mind games, different tricks and leadership stuff for a conference that was to take place next month. once the story started getting out about it and reporters like me started asking about, it they yanked that ad down yesterday afternoon, said nobody had been hired. i won't back and found another leadership event noea did this year, they asked for someone with mountaineering skills and techniques who could teach leadership skills. but i think they were looking

de mayo celebration on a saturday night could add up to trouble in san jose tomorrow night. tara moriarity joins us live with a look at how police are trying to get ready. >> reporter: good morning. police say everybody wants to come to san jose to celebrate cinco de mayo. so they really need to be prepared, and gang intervention experts have been working behind the scenes to defuse any sort of tension because they say trouble has been brewing on the streets since december. right now we're at the main spot where cars cruise and people come to party for cinco de mayo. this is what cinco de mayo celebrations should look like. but festivities turn sour in the past. last year one person was stabbed, seven arrested and vandalism broke out. it's not a city sponsored event anymore. the parade and festival were cancelled after 2010. the clubs and bars continue to draw thousands, some gang members from gilroy and towns as far as lodi some officers

say they're concerned about a recent spike in gang violence as well. just one week ago, a 14-year- old boy was beaten on on hess his way to play basketball in roosevelt park. that was gang-related. he died three cases later from his injuries. it was the 13th homicide of the year, and the fifth that was gang-related. the gang task forcing says it's seen an increase in gang activity some starting tonight and through the weekend officers will be blanketing the area, especially in the spots around bars, trying to prevent also revelers from moving the party to east san jose when they're done partying here. tara moriarity, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:30. it's a story you'll only see on 2. some antioch residents say alleged squatters accused of tearing up one vacant house and threatening a ktvu news crew have taken over another home. neighbors tell us they

task force serving a search warrant. at this point we don't know if anyone was arrested. police are expected to tell us more information about this later today. also overnight, a hit-and- run accident between a car and a taxi in san francisco's mission district. this happened about 2:15 this morning. a ford mustang apparently t- boned the taxi, knocking it into that building and 19th and mission streets. traffic light was also knocked out. the driver of the ford mustang ran away. police say they did find that bottle of alcohol inside the car. in san jose a fire destroyed one home and damaged another next door. it happened on topaz way after 8:00 last night. firefighters say the fire started in the garage of a two- story home. five people and four guests escaped safely but one was treated for smoke inhalation. firefighters say the home is a total loss and the red cross is now helping those displayed

find a new place to stay. in santa cruz county deputies are looking for a man who chased a woman who had been jogging along a trail. the incident happened wednesday afternoon at fall creek trail and the henry redwoods state park. deputies released this sketch of the suspects. they say he first tried to talk to the woman, then chased her. she was able to get away and called 911. anyone with information is asked to contact santa cruz county sheriff's deputies. an open house today at the oakland police department. the first time this has ever happened. this is sure to be a big hit if you love tv crime shows. >> have our csi staff here, so anyone who watches those television shows can actually come and talk to real csi people and see that things takes a long time. they don't get involved in an hour hike on the tv show. >> the general public will also get a chance to talk one on one

with oakland police officers. this evening's open house will be at the police administration building on seventh street. begins at 5 p.m., it will go on until 7:30. this morning a former san ramon police officer will be sentenced for his role in a law enforcement scandal. 39-year-old louis lombardi is part of a disbanded drug enforcement team in the east bay called cnet. he was convicted of stealing $40,000 in cash and property during searches of the homes of drug suspects. hess also found guilty of selling drugs and stolen guns. he is facing a possible 60-year prison term. this morning prosecutors in san francisco will file formal charges against some of the protestors arrested during this week's occupy takeover on turk street. one man is expected to face felony charges for throwing bricks and pipes up the roof of the building to the street below. one person suffered minor

injuries when a brick hit his nose. at least four others will be charged with trespassing for the building takeover. ktvu was there live when split raided the building early wednesday morning. in all, police made more than 2 dozen arrests. it's still not clear throw if everyone arrested will be charged. san francisco's directorial will do his part today to help the mission district business owners who were targeted by vandals. dozens of violent protestors trashed several stores along with cars. even the mission district police station on monday night. today district attorney george gascon will head to valencia street, encouraging the public to donate to the we pay donation website set up for the victims of vandalism. it's been an especially bad week for one district store owner. he runs. a clothing store on valencia street. first the violent demonstrators smashed his store windows

during monday night's rampage. then westin wear received a citation from city hall about the from fetty on the boarded up windows of the store. the department of public works admits that was a bad move. they've now apologized and voided out that citation, even offered to help out that store owner. five teenage girls were arrested after a fight on an alameda county campus at newark memorial high school and that's the same school that was attended a a senior who was stabbed to death last week. wednesday's fight involved 15 and 16-year-old girls. it reportedly stemmed from an argument over a boy. no one was seriously hurt. police and school officials say there is no connection between that fight and the death of the star football player killed on saturday. the suspect in his killing, 18-

contributions outside, matt. >> reporter: even more so, tori, than we saw yesterday. just take a look. this is live in front of his oceanside home here. there's a lot of flowers and a lot of cards and messages to the family. the hope for the family right now, possibly some good if any can come of this tragedy. according to the chargers chaplain, the people has decided to donate his brain to science. they want to see if trauma on the football field leads to depression. within wednesday the former charger was found dead in his oceanside home with a gunshot wound to the chest. yesterday an autopsy confirmed he committed suicide. experts have been quick to point out similarities in his death to former chicago bears safety, who also died of suicide. he donated his brain to science and researchers determined out of that he suffered from depression, from a disease linked to concussions. this morning we're talking to locals, lori?

u.s. stocks down this morning after the government reported that hiring slowed in april. two hours ago the labor don't reported u.s. employers added just 115,000 jobs in april. 160,000 have been expected. now the unemployment rate did fall to 8.1%, a three year low are but only because more people gave up looking for work. the dow is down 127. nasdaq down 48. s&p down 15. and coming up at 8:15, the political spin both democrats and republicans are putting on the job numbers this morning.

sweeped the area, including rest rooms and restaurants. nothing was found. no one was arrested. however, a spokesman tells us delays won't be cleared up until the middle of the morning. a fire near hayward left three people looking for a new place to live now. ktvu's alex savage is live near hayward now to tell us why firefighters say this was no accident. alex. >> reporter: good morning, dave. investigators think someone torched this house while three people were inside. several neighbors in this area spotted a man holding a gas can, standing on the front porch of the house, before this fire broke out last night. it was around 10:00, one of people trapped inside was a vietnam veteran who is a double amputee. fire crews had to rescue him and help him outside. this morning he is treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital. his two caregivers who live in the home had to jump out of

side windows escape and firefighters had to rescue three kittens from the home. the fire department says the man who started the fire hopped into a waiting suv that then sped off after the fire broke out. he got in that car, a white stuff, and that's what police are looking for in morning. a motive for the crime is still unclear. >> we do know it was gasoline and we bound to some inside the home. poured it on the porch and lit it with a rag. >> interestingly enough it was back in november of last year when two other suspicious fires broke out in this neighborhood. they were at this strip mall right across the street from the home. both of them were determined to be arson. you can see it where this strip mall is located, in relationship to the home. just across the street. and i did just hear back from the sheriff's office, and a spokesman says at this point they have no evidence to suggest the fires are connected, but he also did say

it's certainly a possibility. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. an assistant principal at a san jose high school is under arrest on charges of unlawful sexual contact with a minor. 32-year-old joseph john was booked into the santa clara county jail on wednesday. his bail was set at $100,000. he is an assistant principal at leeland high school. authorities will only say the charge involves one incident in september, but they're not elaborating. the principal and another assistant principal have also been placed on paid administrative leave. but they're not suspected of any criminal wrongdoing. a hearing on the future of an east bay private school will get underway in an hour and a half. wind rush school due to close for good in june, but as claudine wong joins us now live to tell us, it could happen

san jose and a cinco de mayo celebration planned on a saturday night all could add up to trouble in san jose tomorrow night. ktvu's tara moriarity is in san jose now taking a look at how the police are bracing themselves. tara. >> reporter: san jose police tell us that they're going to have officers from their patrol division as well as their special operations unit join the regularly assigned officers to two specific areas, story road, king road area, and then right here in downtown san jose. but that's as much information as they would give us. officers are obviously concerned about large and ruly crowds based on past experience. festivities have turned violent before. last year someone was stabbed, police arrested seven people. and vandals tossed bottles into storefronts, smashing glass. because of so many drunken fights and problems, the festival were cancelled after 2010. clubs and bars continue to draw thousands, some of them gang

those killings. most of the suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance in federal court tomorrow. a pregnant woman is rest this is morning after getting assaulted by a female suspect at a pittsburg wal-mart. it happened yesterday in the parking lot of the store on loveridge road. the 33-year-old victim was driving out when she almost hit the other woman. the two got into an argument, with the suspect hitting the victim with a sharp metal weapon. she suffered superficial injuries do her arms and chest and should be okay. an oakland teenager who admitted to shooting and killing one every his friends is due to appear in juvenile court next friday. that last month the 15-year-old victim chante daniels was gunned down in a park. police have not told us the name of the 14-year-old suspect because of his age. all that they were friends for several years, an argument broke out and me shot daniels

the major republican presidential candidates still in the race p he says he is staying in. all the way to the nominating convention in tampa in august. oakland residents might say the city doesn't look a day over 130. but oakland is actually celebrating it's 160th birthday today. oakland was incorporated as a city in 1852. there will be a big bash at city hall later this morning. events include a cake cutting ceremony, free concert and unveiling the repaired model of city hall that was damaged during an occupy protest in january. today is may 4th, and it has special meaning for "star wars" fans. it's because today's date, may 4th, sounds like "may the force" be with you. and the official "star wars" website has a number of games, videos and fan gear up for sale. i think it was sal posted something about it on twitter.

it's:43. we're following developing news outs of emeryville right now on a above ground hydrogen tank at an remarks c transit bus yard is leaking. claudine wong just got to the scene, where evacuations are underway. so how serious is this situation there? >> reporter: i think they're trying assess what is going on here. we're at 45th and san pablo. fire, police will transit officials, the yard is behind this firetruck right in front of us and you can see it two fire drugs positioned there as they assess the situation. they have this area taped off. they are allowing traffic down san pablo, obviously a very busy street, through here. i talked to a person who was

actually in the yard when this discovery was made this morning. she said it was just before 8 and cue see it flames coming out the tank. they founded an alarm and had people evacuating from the yard. that -- let's look at this from the yard. actually has a maintenance facility in it, tire facility, it has buses that are stored there, i'm told the hydrogen is used for the alternative fuel buses, and so they had to clear a lot of people out. estimates about 50 people, depending on how many drivers were actually in the yard at the time. obviously a dangerous situation reporting there have been evacuations in the area as well as the pixar studios close to here as well. we have heard the reports of there may be a school also evacuating. so at this point hydrogen is something that is certainly something to be of concern so they have everyone here assessing the situation. back out here live on 45th and san pablo, this area does remain shut down right now at

if anyone was arrested. and a criminal investigation is happening now into a house fire that has displaced three people near hayward. ktvu's am ex savage has been there all morning, back now. so what are witnesses saying? >> reporter: you know, dave, witnesses in this area say they saw a man holding a gas can, standing in front of this house early -- late last night when the fire broke out, and this morning sheriff's investigators searching for the arsonist who apparently doused this home across the street in gasoline and then set the place on fire. it all happened just before 10:00 last night at the home near hayward in an unin corp operated part of the county. three people in side at the time. one of them trapped, a vietnam veteran named jimmy who had both legs amputated. fire crews had to carry him outside. he's being treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital. his two caregivers who also liver in the home with him jump

emeryville. the area around 45th street and san pablo avenue being evacuated as a leaking hydrogen tank at ac transit. claudine wong is there so what do you know? >> reporter: they just shut down san pablo avenue at 45th. they're ruetering carder cars around here. they just did that within the last couple minutes. take a look behind us, you can see the trances it buses lined up along the street. part of the buses that were cleared from the yard after this hydrogen leak was discovered. the actual yard happened down the street. this is 45th street in emeryville. you can see it the firetrucks lined up outside the yard. they have a ladder truck that is now taking an aerial view of the situation, and that whole group of people there, ac transit, emeryville fire, police, oakland police, also here they continue to just shut down different parts of this area. we know there have been several evacuations. the yard -- let's look from above at newschopper 2, show

you a view of the yard. this is a maintenance yard with tire facility in there. there were an estimated 50 to 75 people in that yard this morning. just before 8 when this leak was discovered. at one time they were plumes of smoke and fire coming out of this hydrogen tank. the tank used to fuel the alternative fuel buses for ac transit. but obviously a big concern here this morning. there are evacuations in and around this area. we're not clear at this point how long it will take to contain the leak, and how serious they think the situation is. but i can tell you i have seen them the last couple minutes taking wind readings, obviously, trying to figure out where the wind is blowing and where the vapors could be headed. so the cvs pharmacy and a restaurant, strip malls here, obviously keeping a close eye on that. i see the spokesperson walking towards us now. you can tell they quickly any updates? >> well, i don't know what you know at this point. all i can tell you is that we
