good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, may 5th. let's diver right into it and go to rosemary for a quick look outside today. >> good morning to you! a warming trend in time for your weekend. let me show you what i'm talking about. friday's highs and today's highs. we're looking at a tendering difference in santa rosa, 12 degrees san francisco, 11 concord. you see what i mean. a noticessable warm-up into the afternoon hours. if you're getting outdoors this morning, we're several degrees cooler than yesterday morning. i'll have the numbers coming up. this morning one man is dead and a woman in serious condition after a stabbing at a vallejo mobile home park. the woman had to be airlifted to the hospital. the man died from his injuries at the hospital. police say they received a call overnight about a stabbing involving several people. when they responded they found the two injured people. they say they had detained someone as a person of interest but are not yet calling this.

a suspect. right now they're not releasing anymore information. >> at this point it's still too early to give any specific details, because we're still trying to learn the specifics of what occurred. >> police say the woman was in serious condition when she was taken to the hospital. right now no update on her condition. police are investigating a takeover robbery at this 72 on miller avenue. at about 10 last night, two employees were locking the backdoor of the royalty spa, when police say a man pulled a handgun and forced the employees into a room. police say he then stole money from the business and the victim's car. he is described as hispanic in his 20s, wearing dark clothes. police say they're also looking for a second possible suspect, also described as hispanic and in his 20s but with visible tattoos on his arm. an investigation is underway into an overnight fire in san francisco. it happened at a home on thomas avenue in the bayview district. flames came from the garage

around mid night and the red cross is helping about nine displaced people. there was heavy smoke throughout the house. there are no reports of any injuries and there's word no -- no word yet on what caused the fire. in the sunset district a woman was critically injured and another fire, this one at 3:00 yesterday afternoon at a home on 41st if terraville. there was a lot of smoke and clutter inside the house. firefighters found a woman on the second floor of the home, she was transported to the hospital. inches knocked down the flames within 20 minutes. the cause is under investigation. it's cinco de mayo, and in san jose the celebrations are already underway. we were there last night as people crowded into bars and restaurants. business owners say the last time cinco de mayo fell on a saturday, it was chaos and the city was overwhelmed by people. san jose police say they are

anticipating a similar situation as the warm weather brings more people to the downtown area to celebrate. >> for that reason we have enough officers here that we feel confident we'll be clear presence for individuals to realize that it's a safe environment, but then also for anyone who plans to be disruptive, we will be able to address those issues immediately. >> police say they are being especially vigilant because of last week's beating death of a 14-year-old boy in downtown roosevelt park. it was a gang-related crime and there is a zero-tolerance policy in effect for tonight's party. and san francisco's cinco de mayo festival will kick off in just about three hours. the celebration is being held in mission delores park until 6:00 tonight. it will feature 10 local artists performing a variety of cultural themed dances. and in oakland, the free cinco de mayo concert is going to be held at 2:30 today in the fruitvale transit village. this is located at 34th avenue and international boulevard. the concert will feature music

and songs from central and south america. the caribbean as well as mexico. dii check points in effect around the bay area. most were up and running last night and will be open through tomorrow morning. deputies and napa county say they will be deploying extra patrols looking for drunk drivers. more information is coming out about the marin county teenager accused of attempted murder and the theft of a sportscar belonging to a famous chef. 17-year-old suspect max swayed in juvenile hall, in april he shot at two teens and last year he stole a $2,000 lamborghini from tv chef guy fieri. he wrote about plans for more crimes in papers found in a storage unit in richmond. police served a search warrant last night. it's not clear if anything was found there. happening right now, five men accused of orchestrating the september 11th attacks are appearing in public for the first time in three years. they are being arraigned at a

military tribunal on guantanamo bay, cuba. the hearing began about a half hour ago. the self-confessed mastermind mohammed and four conspirators face charges, including terrorism, hijacking and nearly 3,000 counts of murder. legal experts are divided on what will happen here. the arraignment can be as simple as reading the charges and entering pleas. but some military lawyers think the tests may try to turn the proceedings into a political circus. mohammed mocked the tribunal in provo court appearances. relatives of 9/11 victims are demanding the death penalty. >> it lingers in the back of your head that these people are still alive. i mean, they're not glorious, but -- it would bring closure. >> a trial date is expected to be set. but it won't begin for at least another year due to legal motions and other issues.

the families of six 9/11 victims have flown to gitmo to watch the proceedings. they were chosen by lottery. other victims' families are watching through closed circuit television at four military bases in the united states. stay tuned, we'll have updates throughout the morning. a magnitude 4.3 earthquake shook the north bay overnight. the earthquake hit after 2:20 this afternoon, three mimes east of the geysers and 24 miles north of santa rosa. the geysers produce a lot of small quakes because it of its geothermal power plants which have steam if deep wells. more than a dozen agencies around the state are going to participate in an earthquake drill today. it is a full-scale earthquake response exercise meant to simulate a health care volunteer mobilization and deployment. the drill is happening inside the oakland coliseum. tonight the moon will appear bigger and brighter than usual. it's called the super moon.

this is video of the center moon from last year. and tonight there will be a full moon and at 8:35, the lunar orbit will be at its closest point to earth. the moon will appear about 14% larger and 30% more luminous than most full moons. i notice the moon as i was driving in this morning. it was spectacular, and it helped that everything was so clear, rosemary, a beautiful day in store. >> you're right. and that moon, fabulous. yes, we're looking at wall-to- wall sunshine at this hour. our numbers are going to be a lot warmer than just yesterday. sunday looks to be the warmest day. a live look outside our doors, and the bay bridge, we've got just the breeze blowing in some areas, generally light in the hills. it's a little gustier. we've got pattern change going on here. we've got a northeasterly breeze in santa rosa, westerly san francisco, calm in san jose. and northerly breeze in fairfield, about 12 miles per hour. calm in oakland, northerly just a generally.

lady will speak at two universities, one in ohio and the other in virginia. these campaign says he's trying to attract youth vote by focusing on the economy and job growth. next week president bo and obama will stump in seattle, los angeles and reno. republican presidential nominee mitt romney may soon pick up the endorsement of rick santorum. romney campaigned yesterday in pittsburgh and before the rally he met with santorum in the closed door meeting. romney is working to shore up the support of republican conservatives. many of whom backed santorum. two uc berkeley grad watts held captive in iran are getting married today. they were engaged two years ago in a tehran prison. they were hiking on the iraq border when they were arrested on spying charges. today's wedding is a private ceremony reportedly in an undisclosed location in california. the university of california has 50 new

recommendations for police in campus protests. the uc report follows criticism of use of force against occupy protestors in berkeley and davis last year. among the recommendations, use mediators instead of police. officers should use their hands- on protestors instead of pepper spray or batons. students should be disciplined at school instead of arrested and the uc should videotape protests. you can read all of the recommendations on our website, ktvu.com. we have posted the full report under hot topics on the homepage. a church, school and several businesses in san jose are doling with a graffiti problem. someone tagged the great catholic church and school. the principal says it's not hateful or gang-related, but earlier this week the school says it was hit with from feetee that appeared to be anti- religious.

distance from the men packing up. they did not talk, but did give the crew an on scene guesteddure. neighbors plan to bring occupy the issue with the city council later this month. a cash-strapped private school will be allowed to stay open until the end of the school year. a federal bankruptcy judge ruled wind rush school can operate through june. the school filed for bankruptcy last fall after defaulting on a construction loan. the 36-year-old school will close its doors june 7th, after the 8th grade graduation ceremony. next week the san francisco teachers union will meet for the first of two votes that could lead to a strike. the union says negotiations over a contract have stalled. it says the district is demanding too many cuts despite millions of dollars in resources that could prevent layoffs and give teachers a 2% raise. the district says they're not hiding any money and the union does not see the fiscal reality of the situation. when it comes to job growth, sonoma county is one of

worst places in the country. a study ranks the area 389th out of 398 u.s. communities. the man who helped write the record says they've lost 20,000 jobs since the year 2000. some other local areas are showing significant job growth. silicon valley at 38th best in the nation. san francisco and the peninsula, 85th in job growth. and napa ranked 142nd. napa will have more latino people than white people within the next 20 years. that is according to a high in gracious policy study commissioned by the napa valley community foundation. white baby boomers are getting older. that population is shrinking. and the latino population is growing. soon there will be a latino majority. and it hopes to educate the community and find solutions to the racial issues. one of yahoo's share holdes is demanding the ouster of its ceo because of an error on his

resume. meridian yell lowe wants the sunnyvale company to fire scott thompson and is threatening a lawsuit. yahoo called the mistake on the resume an error and a filing with the sec yahoo stated thompson received a science degree from stonehill college but he never did. the defense team in the john edwards trial will cross- examine a key prosecution witness on monday. he is the lawyer of a went under it-year-old wealthy donor who secretly gave $725,000 to edwards' presidential campaign in 2008. the witness testified edwards knew about the money and used it to hide the affair with his pregnant mistress, rielle hunter. >> the prosecution is attempting to influence this jury by proving that john edwards is an unethical fellow had is caring with this woman. >> edwards has bleed not guilty

to six counts relating to campaign violations. if convicted he faces up to 30 years in prison. there's a new rape allegation against the former head of the international monetary fund. dominique strauss-kahn is calm up in a prostitution scandal in france. that investigation has now led police to another woman, who says she was working as a prostitute when she was gang april at a strauss-kahn sex party in washington, d.c. in a hotel back in 2010. strauss-kahn was arrested lasts year after a maid accused him of raping her. although the charges were dropped, she is now suing him in civil court. and the colombian prostitute at the center of the secret service scandal is opening up about what happened. she spoke on colombian radio, claiming an agent owed her $800 after a night with her. she called all the agents fools for not resolving the matter by giving her the money. she didn't look through their belongs position didn't know they why linked to president

homeowners and farmers are helping each other clean up tornado damage. investigators confirm an ef-2 tornado touched down knee wayland, iowa thursday night. the winds were up to 130 miles per hour, strong enough to rip the roofs off two homes and destroy two turkey farms the residents can clean you now in the daylight but they say when the tornado hit, it was dark and the experience was terrifying. >> the warnings and the sirens are going off, and the storm just moved in. >> a lot of the tin hitting the

one man is dead and one woman seriously injured as police now searching for who is ever responsible for this deadly overnight stabbing. welcome back to mornings on 2. vallejo police say the stabbing happened at the olympia mobile home park. we are live at the scene with what police are saying. >> reporter: let me show you higher, yellow crime tape out in this neighborhood, so are investigators. and we have seen quite a few of them documenting evidence out here this morning. police telling us this started shortly after midnight when they got a call about a stabbing. when they got here to the olympia mobile home park, they found two people had been hurt. one man died of his injuries. a woman had to be airlifted to a local hospital in serious condition. >> we don't know yet. she was transported to the nearby hospital with a serious injuries, but we don't know or have not received updates.

>> reporter: we have learned that one person is in custody. we're also looking into reports from folks out. here that this may have been a dispute between neighbors. as soon as we get an update from police, we'll bring that to you. about 30 minutes from now another search effort is going to get underway to find missing south bay teenager sierra lamar. volunteers can check in at bur note elementary until 1 p.m. today. the 15-year-old morgan hill girl disappeared march 16th on her way to school. sheriff's investigators focusing on two reservoirs near her home. dive teams plan to resume their search there next week. police officers killed in the line of duty will be honored by the state this weekend. the list of officers includes slay show police officer jim capoot. tomorrow night there's will be a candlelight vigil at the

capitol mall in sacramento. and on monday capoot's name will be on the wall of the peace officers memorial. a car thief recovering from a police shooting, just after 5 last night in pinole. highway patrol says an officer was following a stolen car on interstate 80 when the driver exited on to pinole valley road. officers say the driver then pulled into a kaiser parking lot, got out of the car and tried to run. what happened next remains a bit unclear but highway patrol says at some point a pinole police officer shot the suspect, who is now expected to survive. the suspect's name has not been released. a man involved in a bay area law enforcement scandal is now in federal custody. the family of former antioch police officer chris butler left federal court without talking to the media yesterday. butler pleaded guilty to crimes including conspiracy to sell drugs and, theft, running a massage parlor prostitution ring, robbery, and extortion. all while working as a private investigator with members of

the contra costa county drug enforcement team for cnet. >> he feels extremely bad for a lot of reasons. lot of people got hurt by this, and his family particularly. >> butler will be sentenced in september and faces up to 10 years in prison. the family of former san ramon police officer lewis lombardi learned he would spend three years behind bars for stealing drugs, money and jewelry while on the task force. oakland police are looking for the teenagers who stormed a barbershop and robbed 20 people. we're told four latino teenagers carrying guns and wearing bandannas over their faces hit the barber shot on international boulevard around 8 lasts night. they stole money from the shop it took customers' wallets, cell phones and other valuables before running off. today east palo alto is going to give you cash for your unwanted guns. the police department is hosting this annual gun buyback program today and the

department will give out $100 for each of the first 150 guns returned. just go to the parking lot of the east palo alto city hall between 9 and 1. there was a proud day for oakland as city leaders hosted birthday celebrations. >> happy birthday city of oakland! >> mayor quan called yesterday a renaissance and celebrated oakland's 160th year with the cake. a restored model of city hall was unveiled after it was vandalized last fall during an occupy protest. >> we're very young city, and oakland is really a city on the rise. >> the police department held its first open house giving residents a chance to interact with the officers. protestors did threaten to disrupt the celebration. officers stopped the group as it tried to speak with the police chief. police did let some protestors into the party but soon after one man tried to speak at the microphone and officers

escorted the group out. the alameda county district attorney's office filed charges against three people arrested during an occupy oakland demonstration on tuesday. 22-year-old jordan barred was charged with felony vandalism. 24-year-old isaac castro was charged with felony assault on a peace officer, and 54-year- old stephanie demos faces charges resisting arrest and failure to disburse. police arrested 39 people on tuesday and prosecutors say more charges may be coming. today is san francisco mayor ed lee's 60th birthday. he's not asking for lots of gift. instead he is asking the community to volunteer their time, improve the city and support local businesses. suggestions, they include reading 60 books to a child, donating 60 school supplies or biking or walking to work 60 times. investigators found a faulty valve on a hydrogen tank at ac transit fueling station in emeryville. that one experienced a leak which caused evacuations.

you can hear the hissing leak on a cell phone video sent to us yesterday. ac transit workers saw flames coming from a 9,000 gallon task of pressurized hydrogen used to fuel ac transit buses. firefighters and police evacuated a school and businesses, including pixar. the station is going to be closed for several days until a c-tran it finds out exactly what went wrong. a bay area fisherman is getting the credit for freeing a gray whale that was tangled up in a fishing line and buoys. the whale was first spotted off the coast of orange county on april 17th, and on thursday mark a nilo was on his boat after the coast of bodega bay when he spotted the buoys and the large whale. >> he was right on the surface. he was wore out that -- he got right to him. >> they used this hook to snag the line and cut it from the whale. he says it took about 90 minute

to free the whale and once it was loose, the whale did a lap around the boat, surfaced and swam away. he thinks the whale was relieved to be free and was saying thank you. after being postponed by veer weather, rosie is being declared the winner of the kentucky race. as many as 100,000 people ready track when the wind and rain picked up. but when the weather calmed down, the horses took off. this marks the first time in 138 years a woman has won this race. it's held every year on the friday before the kentucky derby, and features three-year- old phillies. the winner receivers a $600,000 and a silver trophy. the bad weather is supposed to improve in time for this afternoon's kentucky derby. the run for the roses is scheduled to begin at 3:24 our time. right now your early favorites to win are union rags. the kentucky derby is the first leg of the triple crown and is called the most exciting two minutes in sports.

contractors are trying to determine what caused a building to collapse in new york city. the building came down yesterday evening. firefighters rushed to the scene where they spent the night searching for people in the rubble. luckily, no one was inside the building and no one was hurt. a construction crew had been working on the foundation of that building but they had already left for the day when it had collapsed. the golden gate bridge is getting some sparkly new jewelry for its 75th berkeley. a scientist designed special mirrors to go on the bridge's two towers. the idea is that when the mirrors catch the sun, they will create flashing sparks of light. the mirrors will be remote controlled, so they don't distract drivers and pilots. they are set to be installed at the end of the month. four malnourished horses have a new home at least for now. they're at the contra costa county animal services in martinez. concerned citizens accept photos to animal services pleading with them to rescue

arms. an investigation is underway into an overnight fire in san francisco. it happened on a home on thomas avenue in jennings street in the city's bayview investigate. flames came from the garage around midnight. the red cross is helping about nine displaced people including three children. most of damage occurred in the garage but there was heavy smoke throughout the house. there are no reports of any injuries and no word on what caused that fire. a woman was critically injured in another fire in san francisco. this one broke out around 3 yesterday afternoon. in a home on 45th, first. that is in the city's sunset district. firefighters say there was a lot of smoke and clutter in the house. they did find a woman on the second floor of the home and she was rushed to the hospital. firefighters put out the flames within 20 minutes and kept the fire from spreading to homes next door. san jose police are preparing for tonight's cinco de mayo celebration. while some people got the party started a little early.

hearing throughout the morning. a 4.3 earthquake shook the north bay overnight. it hit just after 2:20 this morning. its epicenter at three miles east of the geysers and 24 miles north of santa rosa. the geysers produce a lot of small quakes because of the geothermal power plants which draw steam from deep wells. more than a dozen agencies from the bay area and around the state are going to participate in an earthquake drill today. it is a full-scale earthquake response exercise to simulate a health care volunteer mobilization and deployment. that drill is happening inside the oakland coliseum. tonight the moon will appear bigger and brighter than usual. it's called the super-moon. this is video of last super- moon that happened last year. the moon is full tonight and at 8:35 the orbit will be at its closest point to earth. the the moon will appear about 14% larger and 30% more luminous than most full moons.

a double stabbing leaves one man dead and a woman in serious condition. welcome back to mornings ton 2. the stabbing happened just after midnight and ktvu's cara is at the scene and talking with neighbors there. >> reporter: first off i want that let you know police confirmed to us they have arrested the man they believe is responsible for this. i also want to show you part of the scene here. you can see it this wooden railing that used to be standing up bright has fall don't ground in the scuffle overnight investigators have just now wrapped up their investigation after being out here all night. we saw them collecting quite a bit of evidence here at the scene. they have been here at the olympia mobile home part since before 1 after getting a call about a dispute between neighbors as well as a stabbing. a 43-year-old man died of his injuries. a 42-year-old woman was airlifted to the hospital.

. police responded to calls of a stabbing at the olympia mobile park after mid night. a 42-year-old woman was hurt and had to be air lifted from the park. a 43-year-old man died at the hospital from his injuries. police say multiple people were involved in the altercation. so far they have arrested 32- year-old cameron white. he does lyat the park and neighbors are shocked by the news. >> it's just sad. words can't describe how close of home this hit. especially when we first moved here, he was helpful. definitely helped to kind of welcome us to neighborhood.
