"mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's thursday, may 10th. happening now -- residents forced to evacuate after a massive fire are anxiously awaiting for the green light to return home. ktvu's claudine wong is at the

santa clara housing development where several three-story homes under construction were wiped out. claudine? >> reporter: well, it may be a while before those residents are allowed back in. you can see the damage behind me this morning and the people who are still not being allowed in are in the neighboring buildings but firefighters say there's still a lot of work to be done. in the meantime, the residents are being allowed back here and they are telling us how terrifying it was as they ran to safety. this fire broke out at around 10:00 near el camino and scott street. it took about an hour for firefighters to get it under control. at its height, flames were shooting 100 feet in the area. this woman was asleep when the fire broke out and within minutes was running from her home with her newborn, 12-year- old son and husband as she and her neighbors tried to get away from those huge flames. >> i was dead asleep and my husband heard two explosions and he looked out the window

and it was like a bonfire. my mom could see the fire. it was pretty major. we were obviously carrying a baby, like an infant. there were embers like this big coming off -- you know, just dry -- >> reporter: drops on you guys? >> yeah, just trough -- dropping on everything. >> reporter: she doesn't know what shape her townhome is in this morning. we talked to one man who just looked at what's left of his truck moments ago. >> a gift to get a new car. >> reporter: you are taking it in stride? >> i'm taking it in stride. it was a shock to walk -- i walk the dog every morning. i came around the corner and went ouch! >> reporter: they are worried about the stability of the

structure. these were townhomes in the frailing process. obviously there's nothing left of them this morning. what happens now. we've been watching the firefighters putting water. there's still smoke coming what's left of these wood frame construction homes. still waiting for the fire investigators to be out here and then you have residents waiting to get back. some will be dealing with the smoke damage. some will be dealing with fire damage. really the most significant damage to some of these neighboring homes is the water damage because the fire was so hot, it activated sprinklers. and that caused very significant damage in an estimated four to six units that people won't be allowed to live in for at least several days. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. time is now 7:03. in overnight news, oakland police called off a ten-hour search for a suspect in a police shooting. [ sound of gunfire ] >> that was the s.w.a.t. team using flash bang grenadeses at a home near 79th

and macarthur where they thought the suspect was hiding. they didn't find him there. this all started when police pulled over a car around 7:30 last night. witnesses say the suspect jumped out and he may have had a gun. a police officer fired a shot at him as he ran into a yard. now, although this morning's man00 is over, police say they know who they are looking for and they are pretty confident they will catch him. well, the chp is still looking for the hit-and-run driver who killed a cyclist in santa cruz. 39-year-old joshua laven was riding his bike along highway 1 north of wilder ranch state park last week when someone hit him and then took off. his body wasn't discovered for 12 hours. now, laven's dog who had been riding in a basket on the bike, was curled up right next to him until help came. now, the police are looking for a 1999-2004 dodge ram pickup truck. it may be connected to this case. it is 7:04. right now, president obama is

set up by the folks at kaiser permanente, the biking commission and they are here, folks biking to work are stopping by getting some refreshments, some snacks and fruit so they can continue on their journey and back to work. the goal is to produce the benefits to work. we talked to one woman on her commute from marin county to marin city. >> just keeping fit. i get there exactly. it takes me 35 minutes to bike. why wouldn't you bike to work? it's cheap and it's free. >> reporter: it's a gorgeous day to be biking across the golden gate bridge from marin county into san francisco. a couple of hundred thousand people expected to take place in bike to work day in the counties. 200 of these energizer stations are up and running. so along your biking commute

it. >> beautiful day. i know in san francisco i see people all of the time, on valencia, market, everywhere. good morning, everyone. let's take a look at highway 4. we're looking at highway 4. it's getting a little bit better as you head over the hill from bay point to concord. it was a little bit more crowded before. it's still crowded. fortunately, this is just routine stuff for people who drive it every day. unfortunately, it is always slow in antioch. let's take a look at the westbound bay bridge. that is backed up for a 15 to 20-minute delay. it looks fairly thick. there could be something on the list. the chp doesn't report anything but sometimes there's lag time there. so we'll investigate for you. the morning commute in the south bay continues to look good. santa clara valley, i think 85 is a little slow, so is 280. but 101 is the slowest commute. slow at 280, slow at 880. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sir.

good morning. a serious crash on eastbound interstate 80 at carlson. three lanes are blocked there according to the chp. they have issued a sig-alert. this may affect the commute direction west 80 as you drive from pinole to richmond because people may be able to look at the accident and fortunately, sometimes we do have slowdowns from people doing just that.

again, eastbound 80 at carlson, three lanes closed with an injury accident. let's go back to the desk. 7:14. new this morning, two powerful explosions in syria's capital city of damascus. now we have new video to show you of the destruction caused by those blasts. look at this carnage. it destroyed the facade of a military intelligence building. at least 70 people were killed, almost 400 have been hurt. u.n. workers observing a cease- fire went on the tour of this bombing site. >> so we need everyone inside syria, everyone outside syria to understand that this is going only to create more suffering for women, children, the syrian people. >> right now, it's still not clear who is responsible for the bombings. the syrian government is blaming so-called terrorists. opposition forces blame the syrian government. 7:15. new this morning, yemeni security people say five al

qaeda militants are dead following an air strike. the early-morning attack targeted a home where the militants were staying. no word yet from washington about whether the united states is behind the attacks. the u.s. in yemen recently resumed to fight against al qaeda which has captured territory in that area during political unrests. federal authorities want to know who leaked details about that foiled al qaeda plot targeting u.s. airlines and reportedly launched an investigation. news reports disclose that a would-be suicide bomber for al qaeda wastabley a double agent working with the cia and saudi intelligence agencies and had thwarted that attack. u.s. and saudi officials are said to be furious about the leak. one lawmaker says it disrupted a sensitive ongoing intelligence operation. and the parents of an american soldier held captive by the taliban are revealing that he is the focus of the secret negotiations between the obama administration and the taliban over a proposed

prisoner exchange. this is video released by the taliban of sergeant b o bergdahl. parents say the trade involving the exchange of 5,000 prisoners of in -- in cuba. the parents decide to publicly about the negotiations because they are frustrated with a lack of progress. 7:17. this morning we're taking a closer look at how president obama's change of heart on same- sex marriage will play politically. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom to tell us how the campaign is already promoting the president's decision. alison? >> reporter: dave, president obama reportedly raised a million dollars in the first 90 minutes after his announcement yesterday. the obama campaign seems to think this is a winning issue. the campaign tweeted out the word "mystery" last night and

officer manuel ramos is charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. officer jay is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault. both have pleaded not guilty. the federal government plans to sue arizona sheriff joe arpaio. it stems from allegations of civil rights allegations including racial profiling of latinos by the maricopa county sheriff's department. the sheriff is accused of cutting off communications. the sheriff denies the racial profiling allegations and says he will not give unhis authority to the federal government. 7:20. well, today, suspended sheriff ross mirror mirkarimi is expected to reveal his witness list to keep his job. that list -- last week, san francisco mayor ed lee submitted his witness list.

it includes mirkarimi's neighbor, irene madison who first reported the domestic violence case to the police. the mayor's list also includes mirkarimi's former girlfriend, christina flores, and retired sheriff, michael hennessey. well, a -- well, a 4-year- old concord girl injured in a hit-and-run accident may never walk normally again. family members say she had surgery on her broken femur yesterday. her ankle and tendons were also very badly damaged. police say she was playing near 6th street and clayton road in concord road tuesday night when she ran into the street. a pickup truck hit her. the driver of that truck never stopped. now, police say it was a newer model, blue truck, possibly a dodge van with oversized tires and tinted windows. there may be damage to the right head lite. beautiful day shaping up. up next, steve paulson will

a german tourist remains in serious condition after she was attacked off the coast of florida. the woman was swimming about 25 yards off the shore of vero beach wednesday when the attack happened. the shark bit into the 47-year- old woman's thigh leaving her with a 12-inch wound that went straight to the bone. >> i saw she was in a pool of blood in the water. so i immediately ran down there, got her out. >> the woman was phone to the hospital where she underwent

fiber one. 7:29. san francisco police have scheduled an 11:00 news conference to reveal more about a fayal officer-involved shooting. the man killed has ties to a deadly attack in rohnert park. tara moriarty joins us from the scene of last night's shooting on nob hill. tara, we understand that you have new information? >> reporter: that's right. i do. i'm gonna get to that in a second. right now i'm just gonna show you there are police officers here still guarding the apartment where the man went on a shooting rampage, shooting the floors, walls and even lighting fires. now, sources within the department say this gunman was a relative and a person of interest in connection with a woman murdered in rohnert park last week. it was a very tense situation here off hide and post for more than an hour last night. just before 9:00, police

cordoned off this entire block after a visit to the man's girlfriend's apartment took a turn for the worse. police say the woman answered the door and was talking to investigators when the man apoored with a gun. gunfire was exchanged. he shot at officers. after about an hour, the man was shot and killed. no one else was hurt. as we mentioned, the man was a person of interest in a rhoneert park murder on -- rohnert park on tuesday. die anhouse died in a violent struggle in her home. she had been beatingen to beat -- beaten to death. police were looking for her missing car. coming up, we'll be hearing from the police and hopefully learn the identity of the gunman. but we're told he's possibly a relative of the woman murdered on tuesday. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. 7:31. we have new information on a tense situation across the bay from san francisco, a hostage situation in the oakland hills ended peacefully just a few

hours ago. our news crew took these pictures of these two oakland police officers parked outside of a home where a man was barricaded inside. he was suspected of violating a restraining order in a domestic violence case. police say the man briefly held a hostage inside the home, possibly his girlfriend. police now tell us that man has surrendered peacefully and no one was hurt. two people were shot. a man and a woman, both 21 years old. they were bound wounded near -- wounded near santa clara and illinois. the woman suffered a graze wound but the man was shot several times. the whack bin doe of their car was blown out. a police investigation continues. a home invasion robbery in vallejo ended in a high speed police chase through oakland. two suspects crashed their stolen car on interstate 580 at lakeshore avenue. this is about 11:30 last night. police say the suspects broke

into a house in vallejo, stole cash, stole that car, they even stole the family dog. that pursuit reached speed up to 100 miles an hour. the suspects were treated at highland hospital but we have no word on the condition of that dog. 7:32. a person is under arrest after a high-speed pursuit in marin from, marin to contra costa county. the chase ended on 680 near willow pass road in concord. it began just before 7:30 last night when novato police responded to a domestic violence call. officers chased. suspect sot freeway where the chp took over -- to the freeway where the chp took over. a section of the freeway was briefly closed during the pursuit and arrest. investigators say there's no connection between the disappearance of sierra lamar and two attempted kidnappings in san jose and walnut creek. beth cases involved a red car similar to the red volkswagen linked to her disappearance.

yesterday about 100 volunteers spread out in the morgan hill area to look for the missing 15- year-old. sheriff's dive teams searched pond and waterways near sierra's home. two people arrested for allegedly scamming parents at their children's sporting events. now, investigators say everbook was targeting parents at little league games. he allegedly posed as a professional sports big wig who had access to premium tickets as well as trips. reportedly he took their money and never came back. now, tammy favata is accused of managing the scam. look at the pictures. police say if you were victimized by them, contact the sonoma county sheriff's department. well, members of the occupy the farm activists protested a university of california lawsuit against them. >> now, the activists marched yesterday from berkeley to the gill tract, a plot of university land that they have occupied for almost three weeks. uc berkeley filed a trespass and nuisance lawsuit against the 14 activists who have been using that land as an urban fan. the university uses it for agricultural research. uc officials are warning the window for reaching a compromise is closing. it is 7:34. there are only a few days left for anyone hoping to replace nadia lockyer. she resigned last month after a little more than a year in office. she wanted more time with her family and to recover from a drug addiction and an extramarital affair. perspective candidates must turn in applications by 5:00 p.m. next tuesday. the board will then interview and vote for lockyer's replacement. later today, san francisco teachers will vote the first of two votes to authorize a possible strike. on tuesday, teachers staged a rally at the school board

meeting. the teachers ub yun says despite having $80 million in reserves -- the union says despite having $80 million in reserves, the district issued layoff notices and is proposing more classroom votes. the board meeting takes place tonight. a second vote would be needed to call a strike in the future. doyle school could be open for one more year under a compromise. back in march, it was voted to close march and allow a french- american school to occupy the property. "the press democrat" says both sides negotiating a deal to possibly allow doyle park and the french school to share the campus for eight least one year. well, the ms. california pageant is next month. one of the bay area's contestants is hoping she'll be well enough to take part.

24-year-old sara choi, right there, was badly burned in a fire in the mission district last weekend. she's already made the first step. she's been transferred out of the burn unit at st. francis memorial hospital. she was considered one of the top contenders this year and pageant officials want her to compete even if she's still wearing bandages. she's such a -- >> she's such a wonderful young girl. she's gonna take a negative and turn it into a positive. that's just the kind of girl she is. >> she's a harvard graduate, an accomplished violin player and was supposed to start her marketing job at google this week. she's still facing about a month in the hospital. 7:37. a south bay city is preparing to make significant cuts to its city work force. the san jose mercury news reports the city of milpitas plans toly off 52 workers that's 14% of the entire staff.

there will also be organizal changes designed to cut costs. the city's park department will be part of public works and the city's recreation division will go to the human resources department. it's the last chance for bay area history buffs to get a close look at a world war ii battleship. for month, the uss iowa has been a popular weekend attraction at the port of richmond. it's docked there for repairs. this weekend, the historic ship will reopen for two final days of public tours. >> that would be something to see. >> yes. sal just saw a crash on the east shore. what's the latest on that? >> well, yeah, we are following that. remember, i've been telling you about this for at least 45 minutes there. east 80 the carlson. the traffic is getting worse. let's get right to the maps. it's east 80 at carlson. the sig-alert has been issued. it was issued after 7:00. they still have the lanes closed or almost all of the

him today without calling his mistress tot stand. we're live outside of the federal court in north carolina with what we can expect when the defense takes over. >> reporter: good morning. this is certainly a big surprise, many legal analysts have sat in on the trial and said without a doubt prosecutors would be calling rielle hunter to the stand. afterall, she was central tot case. and by noting her, they can expect the defense may be calling on her and so it might indicate to the jury they have something to hide. that's what legal analysts were saying. but then when prosecutors said today would be their last day of testimony and they would rest their case, surprisingly hunter was not on their final list of witnesses, although it's highly likely she will be called by the defense. she's still on the defense's list of licenses but -- of witnesses but that would happen sometime later during the trial.

welcome back. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave campbell. it's thursday, may 10th. happening right now -- firefighters in santa clara are still putting out hot spots from a fire. claudine wong talked to some of the victims and they are describing this fire as very, very intense. >> reporter: they are showing us video of the fire. want to show you the scene. we still still smoke coming from parts of this burned out area, out in front of these homes. that's been an issue all day or all morning lock. they've been out here putting water on it. if you take a look to the left, you can see a whole cache of firefighters that are kind of just surveying the area. we also have scene fire investigators out on -- seen fire investigators out on scene. we've seen firefighters looking at the damage. some homeowners are wondering when they will be allowed back in the home.

many of them had smartphones and took video. we got a look at what they shot. want to show you some video. hundred were evacuated from the building when this fire broke out the about 10:00 p.m. everyone we -- out at about 10:00 p.m. everyone we talked to talked about the flames from the start. this is something that the investigators will be looking at -- weigh still don't know how it started. neighbors say they heard popping sounds. one woman said her husband said what he described as explosions. >> i was dead ashe, my husband heard what he said were two explosions. he looked out the window and it was like a bonfire. my mom came to get us. she could see the fire from fenton. so it was pretty major and we were obviously carrying a baby, like an infant. so we had to cover -- there were embers like this big coming off -- you know, just try -- >> dropping on you guys.

>> yeah, just drooping on everything -- dropping on everything. >> reporter: gap, we've talked to -- again we've already talked to investigators who are talking to people who saw the fire as they try to figure out what is behind this. as far as the damage, you have the damage to the town homes that are under construction. those are a total loss. there are about six of them. maybe more. they were only in the framing stage. if you come out here live you can see the burned out area. then you have three buildings right on the either side of them. those did have people in them. those had 75 to 100 people living in them and they are still evacuated. you look at the windows. you can see some fire damage. we have smoke damage in others. but the real problem for the people facing the most damage are the people who have water damage. the fire was so hot that it act vitted the -- activated the sprinklers in one of the buildings. the battalion chief is

work day. alex savidge is live at the golden gate bridge with what's in store for commuting cyclists throughout the bay today. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, tori. you can forget about the traffic. when you bible to work. there are no -- bike to work, there are no backups. there are hundreds of thousands of people taking part in bike- to-work day. this is what they are calling an energizer station. a lot of bicyclists along this popular route they are stopping by the vista point here, the golden gate bridgened and they are grabbing -- bridge here and they are grabbing some snacks and refreshments as well. this is a popular commute for people coming in from marin county to san francisco. there are roughly 200 of these stations set up across the bay area. this is an event put up wipe the bay area bicycle cole -- by the bay area bicycle illation.

8:29. san francisco police will be holding a news conference to tell bus a fatal officer- involved shooting. the man killed is tied to a deadly attack in rohnert park. tara moriarty is on nob hill, the scene of last night's shooting. i know you have new information about this. >> reporter: that's right. i will get to that in a minute. first of all, we've seen some people trickling in over the last couple of hours and they paint a very chaotic scene of what happened last night. the bullets were flying and then man escaped down the fire escape in the back. the officers are actually keeping a watch over the apartment where the gunman went on a rampage shooting through walls, floors and even lighting fires. it was a very tense situation off hide and post for more than an hour.

just before 9:00, police cordoned off this entire block after a visit to the man's girlfriend's apartment took a turn for the worse. the man appeared with a gun. he started to shoot at officers. the man was shot and killed by police about an hour later. the man was a person of interest in a rohnert park murder tuesday. police say 66-year-old diane hughes died in a violent struggle inside her home off bernice avenue. she had been beaten to death and police were looking for her car. sources close to the department say he was related to use. coming up we'll be hearing more about the identity of the gunman. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:31. we have new information on a very tense situation across the bay from san francisco. a hostage situation in the oakland hills ended peacefully

just a couple of hours ago. our ktvu news team took these pictures you are looking at. two oakland police cars parked outside of a house where a man was bare ray kidded. he was suspect -- barricaded e was suspected of violate -- he was suspected of violating a restraining order. police say that man held a hostage inside the home, possibly his girlfriend. police say the man surrendered peacefully, no one was hurt. 8:31. an investigation continues this morning into a double shooting in vallejo. the victims are a man and a woman both 21 years old. they were wounded while driving their santa clara and illinois -- near santa clara and illinois streets around 6:00 last night. the woman suffered a graced wound but the man was -- grazed wound but the woman was shot

we have a just learned police arrested a patient at napa state hospital in connection with an attack on a hospital worker -- worker. it happened on tuesday. the hospital is not releasing the patient's name or giving us details about what happened. but a hospital spokesman said the staff member was treated at a local hospital. there have been several violent attacks at napa state hospital in recent years, including a deadly attack on a psychiatric technician in october of 2010. investigators say there's no connection between the disappearance of teenager sierra lamar and two attempted kidnappings in san jose and walnut creek. both cases involved a red car similar to the red volkswagen connected to sierra lamar's disappearance. now, yesterday, about 100

the school issued more than 600 playoff notices and they are proposing more classroom cuts. the voting will take lace between 4:00 p.m. and 7:30. a second vote would be needed to allow the union leaders to call a strike in the future. santa rosa's doyle park elementary school could remain open for at least one more year. back in march, the santa rosa city school board voted to close doyle park and allow a french-american charter school to use the property. but opponents filed a lawsuit to block the school. weekend on -- sunday is still okay. i think fog starts to come back as cooler temperatures settle in. 8:39. a judge in orange county ordered two fullerton police officers to stand trial for last year's death of a mentally ill homeless man. 37-year-old kelly thomas died five days after being beaten by police officers responding to a call. officer manuel ramos is charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. officer jay is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault. both pleaded not guilty. meantime, the federal government will sue arizona sheriff joe arpaio. he's accused of civil rights violations including racially profiling of latinos by the maricopa county sheriff's department. the justice department wanted reforms including a court appointed monitor. they are accusing the sheriff of cutting off communications. the sheriff denies the racial profiling allegations and says

donations. tonight the president will appear at a fund-raiser in los angeles at the home of george clooney. some of the residents who were forced to evacuate their homes after a big fire in santa clara may be allowed to go back later today. the fire -- look at these pictures, it burned some cars, houses and several three-story townhouses that were just being built. claudine wong has been out there all morning talking to maybes and obviously they are anxious about whether they can go home. claudine? >> reporter: that's right, dave. certainly they want to see what's left of their homes. most of them should be in good shape but there will be several of them who won't be go back in and move back in today. take a look behind me the what is left of this area. investigators are now on the scene trying to figure out how all of this happened. this is a development just off el camino and scott. neighbors say this development is about three years old and this is where the final phase of it is. what you are looking at was
