of the residence, and he saw diane hughes slumped overlaying in the living room floor, no response, large pool of blood. >> police say an autopsy say she died from blunt force trauma, and her 41-year-old son was nowhere to be found. the investigation brought them to his girl friend's apartment, and she told them he was inside, and they talked to him briefly before he started shooting. >> what unfolded over the next hour were multiple gunshots through the floor, through the ceiling, through the walls. the officers on the scene had no idea how many folks had been evacuated and/or secured in place. >>reporter: almost 200 people were evacuated, and police said when hughes decided to light a fire, they decided it was time

to end the situation. >> this is significant. the danger he posed to the community and officers. a sharpshooter fired a shot and eliminated the threat to public safety. >>reporter: police also showed us these weapons seized from the scene. the investigation will continue. at this point police will only say that it is a strong possibility that dennis hughes did in fact kill his mother. in oakland police have called off a 10 hour search for a suspect in a police shooting. the suspect was believed to be hiding in his home, but was not found. it all started when officers pulled over a car around 7:30 last night. witnesses say the suspect

jumped out and may have had a gun. an officer fired a shot at him as he ran away. police say they know who they're looking for and they are confident he will be caught. a standoff in the oakland hills has ended peacefully, the suspect arrested about 1 a.m. at a home. the news crew took these pictures of an undercover police car and oakland police car late last night. both cars were parked outside the home where a domestic violence suspect was barricaded inside. no one was hurt. a witness list is expected in a fight to keep the sheriff's job and how he plans to defend himself later this month. last week the mayor submitted his witness list including a neighbor, who first reported the domestic violence case to police.

the list also includes a former girlfriend and retired sheriff, michael hennessy. a teenager accused of killing a luxury car, among other serious charges was in court this morning. alex savage joins us live to let us know what happened in court. good afternoon, alex. >>reporter: good afternoon. that 17-year-old is accused of stealing a lamborghini by repelling down in the middle of the night using a rope. he's being charged as an adult, but today in court his attorney told the judge he's filing a motion to have this case sent back down to juvenile court where the proceedings will be closed to the public. the judge read off the list of charges against the 17-year-old during this morning's arraignment. wade decided not to enter a plea today. we're not loud to show the defendant in court, but he

could be seen gripping, looking back at people in the audience. the teenager is accused of carrying out an elaborate break in at this car dealership, stealing a $200,000 lamborghini spider similar to this one that belongs to a celebrity chef. >> i'd ask that the public keep an open mind. one of the most important things in our society is a right to the presumption of innocence, a fair jury trial. >>reporter: the lamborghini was stolen last year, but investigators say they caught onto wade last month after he carried out a drive by on his motorcycle, firing shots at two people sitting in a car in mill valley. neither of them were hit by the gun fire. according to reports, investigators then discovered the stolen lamborghini in a storage locker in richmond along with guns and a san francisco police department uniform. wade's attorney wouldn't talk about how his teenage client is

holding up behind bars. >> i don't want to comment about my client and family, other than to say his family loves and supports him and misses him. >>reporter: prosecutors say they're confident this case will remain in adult court. a judge will make a decision on that issue when wade makes his next court appearance in june. he is expected to enter a plea at that time. in the meantime, wade will remain in juvenile hall being held on $2 million bail. live this afternoon, alex savage, ktvu news. police arrest had a patient in connection with an attack on a hospital employee. the hospital is not releasing the patient's name or providing details other than it happened when the patient was being restrained. the hospital statement says the staff member was treated at a local hospital. there had been several violent attacks in recent years at napa state hospital, including a deadly attack on a technician

in october of 2010? : today san francisco teachers are taking the first of two votes to authorize a possible strike. on tuesday teachers staged a rally at the school board meeting. the union says despite having $80 million in reserves, the district issued more than 600 layoff notices and is proposing more classroom cuts. voting will take place between four and 7:30 tonight. a second vote would be needed to allow union leaders to call a strike in the future. taking public comments and getting ready to vote in the debate over which company is going to build its new train cars. >> stay in usa. >> union members rallied about work being done in the united states. >> two and a half to $3 billion of our taxpayer's money, and we're trying to make sure that money goes to american workers

agriculture research. an investigation is underway to find what sparked a big fire that destroyed town houses under construction in the south bay. it broke out around 10:00 last night at a complex in the 1900 block of hilibrandt place. six under construction town houses burned in the fire, and residents were evacuate from neighboring buildings that were threatened by the fire. >> i was asleep, and my husband heard two explosions and then looked out the window, and it was like a bonfire. >> there were no injuries reported. two neighbors buildings sustained minor fire, smoke and water damage. this is a photo. you can see more and a slide show on the front page of the website. two people were shot while

driving through a town, the victims both 21 years old. they were wounded near santa claire and illinois street around 6:00 last night. the woman suffered just a graze wound, but the man was shot several times. the back window of their car was also blown out. a police investigation continues. there was also a home invasion robbery that ended in a police chase. two suspects crashed their stolen car on interstate 580 at lakeshore avenue around 11:30 last night. police say the suspects broke into a home and stole cash, a car and even the family dog. the pursuit reached speeds of 100 miles an hour. the suspects were treated at the hospital and are now in police custody. santa cruz police released surveillance photos who may show the person who vandalized a landmark church. the photos are blurry but show a man wearing a distinctive necklace. police hope someone can

identify the man who they believe damaged the holy cross catholic church on sunday. graffiti was all over the walls and a baptismal font was broken and painted with the word evil. police say it is a monthsble hate crime. california's controller today blasted the city of hurt kulis in a new audit of the city's finances. he reviewed how they spent millions of dollars during the 2010 fiscal year. they said the books are so poorly kept and riddled with mistakes, he called some of them in auditable. he says the shortcomings will mean the city will owe the state and federal government about $2 million for that fiscal year. wanting to throw your hat into the ring as supervisor, only a few days left. she resigned after a little more than a year in office and wanted more time with her
