night at 10:00. eric? >> reporter: you can see san francisco police still guarding the door to the building. we have seen police coming in and out. they are likely taking a look that third floor apartment where the suspect was held up with his girlfriend and began shooting at officers. >> neighbor shows us this view of the window where officers fired the shots to take down dennis hughes. it was the end of a violentb stand off wednesday night. >> 9lic, maybe -- 9lic maybe i heard reports like bang. >> reporter: 200 neighbors evacuated as the shooting continued. dennis hughes hasn't been seen since the death of his mother. but they got a tip he was staying with his girlfriend. >> the girlfriend came to the front door. she seemed nervous. >> reporter: after exchanging

words with dennis hughes he fired 10 rounds and set a fire inside the apartment. >> the suspect continued to shoot through the ceiling, the floor, the walls, into apartments. >> knocked on our door and told us to leave. >> reporter: neighbors who know the girlfriend were shocked to learn what was going on. >> she was very friendly. always said hi. that was it. i always see her. crazy that this could happen. >> reporter: police found two guns near dennis hughes' body after he was shot and killed by officers. >> reporter: he shot video of police toeing away -- towing away dianne hughes' car. dennis hughes was living with his mother but therapy having problems -- they were having problems. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2

news. www.ktvu.com has the complete pleat update -- police update. woman in jail accused of setting her ex-boyfriend's bed on fire while he slept. she faces charges tonight. prosecutors say she was upset her boyfriend was cheating on her. the man's father put out the flames. the victim suffered minor burns. she was arraigned yesterday. a fire today destroyed a house. the fire started at 12:30 this afternoon. a witness told ktvu channel 2 news the fire gutted the home. the man who linned there suffed -- who lived there suffered minor burns and flames damaged a house across the street. homeowners are just now returning home after a fire

last night left them without a place to stay. it broke out at a development. this shows the fire that broke out about 10:00 last night. firefighters say this was the largest fire this year, with flames shooting 100 feet into the air. two complexes were destroyed and the fire spread and damaged nearby homes that were occupied. >> that was my couch in the living room and it burst into flames, which set off the alarm and the sprinkler system. >> investigators spent the day -- spent the day interviewing people. investigators haven't determined a cause for the fire today. twitter's new headquarters, ktvu's david stevenson was shown around by the mayer for a closer look in san francisco.

david? >> reporter: we got a peak inside twitter's new headquarters here as another big tech company announced another big real estate deal in san francisco. they are laying down a lawn on the 9th floor. aimed at revitalizing the district. the building will house twitter, along with new stores and restaurants. >> we will be well north of a thousand people when we move in here and the pace of the company is growing quickly. we are proud to call san francisco home. >> reporter: mayor ed lee helped keep twitter in town with incentives. >> transit systems, bike lanes that are protected. we will see that happen. including the police substation. >> reporter: twitter is one of

over on april 7. he failed a sobriety test but did not release his blood alcohol level. darrius heyward-bey is set to appear in court may 31. mothers against drunk driving is blasting a bill in sacramento. the bill was co-sponsored by roger hernandez who is facing drunk driving charges. it would allowed drink drivers to avoid jail time and instead take classes. >> these offenders will be back on the streets and endangering drivers. >> supporters say the bill aims to ease jail over crowding. san francisco police are asking for the public's help in minding a man. he was last seen yesterday

afternoon near the 1700 block of 41 avenue in san francisco. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. one of hollywood's biggest stars are hosting a event tonight for president obama. these are pictures of george cloney's house where he is hosting a re-election gala. air force one is expected to land in los angeles in 10 minutes now. he is expected to speak at 7:25. it should be the biggest presidential fundraiser in u.s. history. the bridge is slated to be shut adown over the memorial day weekend. it will allow the roadway to swing during a major earthquake without breaking any seals. the swinging will absorb the

teachers in san francisco today held a strike vote. the first in a two step process that could lead to a walk out. they are angry over stalled contract negotiations and receiving pink slips. results are expected tomorrow. california is planning to join 37 states seeking relief from the federal no child left behind law. they voted today to ask for a waver. the federal law requires students test at their grade level or they could lose out on federal funding. california is opting for state waver requests because the budget problems make it difficult to comply with the

requirements. the director of a new charter school will meet with parents and students today. he was appointed to lead the charter high school. it will be converted this fall. . we want to update you on delays for bart commuters. a 20 minute delay on the pittsburg bay point line. the line is the only one effected but keep in mind if you know someone who transfers to or from the line they could be late. officials voted to have a canadian company build the new bart cards. they voted to award the contract to bombardier transit corporation. bart says all of the cars will be assembled in america with

66% american made parts. the first of the new cars is expected to go into service in 2017. advocates for domestic violence victims were outside a church today, they want anyone to know about a deadline and report it. >> if they come forward they will be able to find other victims, access resources for healing and be able to help expose the truth. >> a judge set the august 1 deadline for potential victims who could be included in a lawsuit. summer is around the corner and the snow pack is melting away. ktvu's ken pritchett is live at the american river with the conditions that are luring

river goers, but could be trouble. >> reporter: a bay area man died while rafting on a challenging section of the american river last week, the north fork, this is the south america of the american river and the water looks calm but it is moving faster than normal. 2200 cubic feet a second. it is good rafting water but come up and use caution. >> reporter: they are called the trouble maker rapids. >> the water creates more options. normally everyone goes down the left side because that is where the water is. >> reporter: this is the south fork of the american river. >> it is awesome. running higher than normal right now. you can see the weather is great. >> reporter: he says the

news. warmer weather is heading our way. ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin joins us now in the weather center with the forecast. >> warmer today in some places. tomorrow you will notice it. low 80s. outside i was showing you the temperatures. you can see the heat in the central valley. close to the bay we have a strong on shore flow. you see the buoy reading here. we check out the wind speeds, 22 miles per hour. strong wind blowing the cooler air into the area. these are the highs from today recorded by the national weather service. like yesterday. highs tomorrow will be warmer. nice warm day tomorrow for your friday. starts off mild, temperatures in the 40s. and low 50s. tree pollens are trending high. pine, seeder and -- cedar and
