the very serious claims leveled against him that has parents looking for answers. good morning, to you. welcome to a brand new day and it's friday, may 11th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. let's check in with steve paulson. good to go to the beach or picnic on sunday? >> well not sunday. there may be fog coming back by sunday. today looks good. it will be clear skies and smooth sailing here. temperatures warming up 70s, 80s to near 90 degrees inland. now to sal. all right, steve we are looking at the bart station here in san francisco. 24th street mission station earlier it was shut down for about 45 minutes or so because of a police investigation. but now it has reopened and you can go down to 24th street and

catch a train there. you can also go to 16th street and glen park is what people were doing as well. now you can just come down here. that could be inconvenient for those that don't have a car. you don't have to do that now. bart trains by the way i got off the phone with bart central. let's move along and take a look at the golden gate bridge. traffic here looks good on both directions. some of the clouds and fog we saw earlier have moved away. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. we begin with breaking news from the east bay. a crash involving a passenger train and a pickup truck ktvu tara moriarty joins us now from berkeley with how this accident is effecting the morning commute. tara. >> reporter: union railroad workers were able to back this train up off of the pickup truck. it sort of ridden up on top of the back of it. right now it looks like they drove that truck off and it appeared really not to have

scratch. if we take a look at the video we can show you exactly how the train smashed up on top of the pickup truck and reportedly workers at a steel plant like to park here. they parked a little too close to the tracks. we're at the union pacific railroad track that runs parallel to interstate 80. the accident happened just after 5:00. we believe that there were passengers on board but from our advantage point we can't see inside. as far as we know the passengers are still on the train. hopefully these folks will be able to get on their way pretty soon. we are noticing they are still talking. there is engineers, people with pacific railroad trying to figure out what will happen next. there is also berkeley police here on the scene. again the truck just drove off minutes ago without a scratch.

and it appears that no one was hurt. still need to work out the details with berkeley police. we will be talking with them. live from berkeley i'm tara moriarty. in overnight news two children are among the three family members injured in a hit and run crash in oakland. that happened shortly after 4:00 this morning at 98th and mccarthur. the two girls are 10 and 12 years old. the children along with their mother suffered minor injuries. police are still looking for a driver in a stolen car that raced away from the scene. 6:04. we are following more overnight news from oakland. a very tense standoff has ended with a grim discovery. now just hours ago we found out the gunman took his own life. the stand off started at 10:00 last night when a man barricaded himself. police immediately seal off

several streets and called in the swat tame. police finally went into that house around 3:00 this morning. that's where they found the gunman dead. 6:04. happening light now that continuing stand off at uc berkeley research facility the university has lost patience with a group of occupy protestors. claudine wong is live in albany where both sides seem to be digging in holding their ground. >> reporter: that is right. the issue right now is that the university wants to start research on this plot of land. they want to do it on monday and don't think they can do it with the occupy proteases tours are here. now we have daylight we want to show you what is happening. you are taking a look at private security that is out there. tents from this side where they are standing all the way to the other side. this is ten acres called the gill track. the occupy the farm protestors have been here for 2.5 weeks.

they are pushing for urban farming. yesterday they filed this lawsuit and locked the gate. what they have done is they have locked the gate. the policy this morning is you can go out and they will unlock those gates and let you out but you are not technically allowed to go back in. however, the protestors have put the palettes right here and we have seen them go up and over and walk back out. police don't seem to be taking issue with that. there is also this whole little campground that exists out in front of the locked gates. we have talked to these folks this morning. they said they don't plan to go anywhere. they feel like they have been watching police activity and feel like they are safe for a couple days. again they want this research to start on monday.

mehserle's request to have the conviction overturned. he claims the shooting in 2009 was just a tragic mistake. grant's family will be outside the county district attorneys office in oakland at 9:00 a.m.. 6:07 republican presidential candidate mitt romney is apologizing for taking part in high school pranks. coming up at 6:15 the bullying attack romney is accused of leading and what the sister of the victim is now saying about that incident. governor jerry brown will be in santa clara later today. he will be at the first ever california economic summit. it's a gathering of business and government leaders trying to come up with solutions to california's economic problems. now to get ready for the summit, organizers held 14 regional forums all over california in the past two months. ideas, suggestions, and concerns out of those forums will be presented today at the summit. all right it is now 6:08.

we want to go back to sal. how is the commute? >> we are doing pretty well. we are kind of easing into it. let's take a look at the freeways. 80 westbound looks pretty good. there is a little bit of crowding up near the albany hill but that is not unusual. as we look at the chp list we do not have a lot going on. the morning commute continues to look good. there is certainly more people. if you are driving in castro valley there is report of smoke coming up from the area. 6:09 let's go to steve. >> thank you. we have mostly clear skies. there is a little bit of fog toward monterey. if you have to blame anything blame those grasses they are really, really high.

trees oak, juniper, and mulberry. 86 today. 75 in san francisco. 86 concord. san jose from 82 to 85 degrees. we still have 40s san rafael is in there for lows. a lot of low to mid 50s elsewhere. the system that is sitting out here will work its way toward late saturday and sunday. but today it's sunny and it will be warm and hot for some. a little breeze out of the north in some of the higher elevations. look for 60s and 70s near the coast. mid to upper 80s. brentwood and antioch in there. fremont 82. san carlos in there. half-moon bay 70 degrees. fair and warm with your weekend always in view.

mission district and some people are still showing up. let's go out and take a look at other pictures. northbound and southbound 880 this traffic moves well in both directions. if you are driving to the livermore area traffic looks good. eastbound 580 you may see a fire truck there on the shoulder. 6:19 let's go back to steve. >> thank you. very happy friday. temperatures on a roller coaster. a little cool down wednesday and thursday. the only fog is down toward monterey. kind of in monterey bay. it will be sunny to mostly sunny. that won't stop temperatures from warming up. we had the 80s pushed off a little bit. now 80s and low 90s starting to pop back up. 70s mainly around the coast and bay. not much of a breeze. still a sea breeze direction. but it's less than five miles an hour. higher elevations a little more of a north wind. 40s on the receivers to the north bay again.

low 50s to mid 50s everywhere else. high pressure builds in for a day or two. the fog needs something to get it going. sunshine warmer. a few high clouds no biggy. nice to hot. breezy in some of the higher elevations. that means temperatures they are going to warm up fast. upper 80s to near 90s for some. upper 60 rs to 70s to near 80 degrees. with your weekend always in view. saturday looks fair and warm. a little cool down comes in on sunday. it does look cooler into early next week as well. ford is recalling more than 10,000 calls for transmission problems. a sensor may keep the drivers from putting the car in

truck parked too close to the tracks. the train was headed to sacramento from oakland so it justin left it wasn't going very fast. now there are passengers on board. we're not sure how many. union pacific railroad worker just backed up the train in the past hour or so and drove the truck off the track. there was damage to the other side. now police say the worker at a nearby steel meal parked there as workers around here often do. again this time it was just a little too close. as you can see the train just moved out of the tracks here. looks like they have gotten the service back up and running. that is the good news. the man that parked a little too close to the tracks he will receive a parking ticket. and just to give you an idea where this happened we're on the union pacific railroad tracks that run parallel to interstate 80. again the good news being the train is back up and running

because all trains had basically been frozen between oakland and sacramento. actually san jose as well. reporting live from berkeley i'm tara moriarty. overnight news two children are among the three family members juried in a hit and run crash in oakland. it happened shortly after 4:00 this morning. now the two girls are 10 and 12 years old. the children along with their mother suffered minor injuries. police are still looking for a driver in the -- police say the hit and run driver ran away along with his passenger. the search for the missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar will get national attention today. americas most wanted will air the episode tonight. she disappeared on the way to

school. volunteers will conduct another search for her tomorrow. 6:33. san francisco police now confirming the man killed by a police sharp shooter was suspected of fatally beating his own mother. investigators also telling us details of the violent events that led up to that fatal police shooting. they say 41-year-old dennis hughes barricaded himself in his girlfriend's post street apartment and started setting fires and shooting bullets through walls, floors, and ceilings when the police tried to arrest him. >> due to the significant and ongoing threat the shooter posed to the community the firefighters the officers and the dangerous fire that grew out of control sfpd fired a shot. >> hughes killed his mother on rohnert park. he flew into a violent rage after 66-year-old dianne hughes

told him to move out of the house they shared. squatter encampment is causing a lot of frustration for nearby neighbors. paul chambers joins us now from san jose. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning, pam. residents are saying they are worried about squatters that live out in the neighborhood. this is coyote week. this is where they are citing. now yesterday there was a fire at an a homeless encampment. it was a small vegetation fire where there was burning trash. people in the area are not happy about that because they worry things could get a lot worse. and there is a lot of vegetation out here. there is also a barbecue grill in the area. firefighters were able to knock it down quickly. the major concern for people out here is the proximity the place where the homeless people

are living in. it's right across the street. people are afriday for not only their public safety but what they do around here. the main concern is about the hopeless people there is not much they can do at this time. live in san jose i'm paul chambers. 6:35. memorial will be held tonight for a teenager from newark that was stabbed to death last month. 18-year-old osana futi was killed at a fremont house fire. an 18-year-old man has been charged with his death. he was a staff football player and just about to graduate. memorial today begins at 6:00 at newark memorial high. futi we will be buried in american city moe a. that is where he was born.

search crews had to trudge through the rugged terrain for almost 20 hours to reach that crash site. so far they have recovered 12 bodies. the 45 people believed to be on board that flight. the jet liner crashed on wednesday during a demonstration flight for journalists. jp morgan chase said it suffered trading losses of $2 billion since the beginning of april. the surprise announcement came as they expected to report properties of $200 million. the bank ceo said it was caused by errors, sloppiness, and bad judgment. it's likely to shake investor confidence. jp morgan stock down 9%. president obama waking up this morning in southern california after last nights big fund raying event at the home of the actor george clooney.

good morning, everybody. let's take a look at what we have now. traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving on highway 4 you will see slow traffic. concord, pleasant hill, walnut creek nice looking drive. and as i move the maps to hayward and union city it also looks good. looks like we are getting a little bit of a late start for the commute that is good because it's lighter than it usually is. let's go to the 24th street bart station. you have heard the station was closed in the last hour because of police incident. apparently someone was stabbed on the platform. these are live pictures from above. you can see things are as normal. people are being allow in and out. i want to show you video that we took earlier when the police roped off the area. reportedly a 35-year-old man was stabbed at the station by an unknown woman or unknown to

highways cost and bay. and then 80-degrees in oakland. finally if you get out far enough you see near 90 degrees. especially out toward antioch and gilroy and up toward clear lake. we have very warm weather right there. you can see the 90s popping up. a lot of 70s around the bay. hardly a breeze at all. i expect temperatures to rocket up pretty fast. by 7:00 you will see the temperatures out of the 40s. high pressure will win out today and tomorrow. a little system right there works its way toward sunday. sunshine warmer today. nice to hot. little breezy in some of the higher elevations. i would say 15-25 in the hills. 80s to near 90s. upper 60 rs and 70s.

preventing people from walking back in. what uc berkeley police are letting people out but the policy now is they will not let hem back in. uc also filed a lawsuit. they are asking people to leave the land. they have not seen any forcible measures being taken. i've been talking to protestors out here. some don't want to give their names. you've agreed to talk to us just tell us the plan. what is the option? >> we have here for the long- term. uc has been demanding we leave the land in order to negotiate. we are calling their bluff. we know from 15 years of past history many, many different people and different organizations on several different attempts to try to turn this land into an urban farm. the university has only ignored them. it's only now that we have the land that they have started the

conversation. >> reporter: do you expect them to come in here and raid the area and push everybody out? >> i don't think i can say yes or no. looking at what they have done so far i think their tactic is more to squeeze us out. to starve us out. there have been rumors flying of a raid but we have not had a raid yet. two days ago at 6:00 in the morning they gave their loud notice and threatened to use chemical agents and blunt force if we interfered with the barrier. they were not intending to arrest and not a dispersal order. >> reporter: now everything stays the same. >> yeah. it could change at the drop of a hot. they are very impromptu lock the gates on us. they didn't make an announcement. >> reporter: okay. all right. thank you for talking to us. again that is the situation as it stands. it could change at any moment. we will keep an eye on it.

you can see security guards walking in here now. live in albany claudine wong. we have new video of an arrest following a high speed chase from solano to contraction -- contra costa county. independent viddographer -- videographer captured this. the chase ended on highway 680 at monument boulevard. the driver faces charges of drunk driving. driving with a suspensed license and resisting arrest. the man accused of kidnapping two girls and killing their mother and older sister is now dead. authorities in northern mississippi say they repeatedly ordered adam mayes to surrender yesterday but he shot himself in the head. the two girls ages 8 and 12 were found alive. they were treated add the

hospital and released early this morning. the girls disappeared from their tennessee home two weeks ago. authorities say mayes killed the mother and 14-year-old and kidnapped the younger girls because he thought they were his daughters. vice president joe biden has a apologized to president obama for forcing his hand on the same sex marriage issue. he pushed the issue to the forefront when he said he was comfortable with same sex marriage during a tv interview last sunday. right after that reporters started hounding president obama about his position on the issue. that led to the president's big announcement wednesday that he now supports the right of same sex cap couples to marry. he accepted vice president's biden's apology. most bay area drivers you have seen gas prices go up
