place. >> there is prep work. we are in the middle of the race course. goes right through santa rosa. this is where 128 cyclists will take off when the stage one tour begins before 11:00 this afternoon. a lot of set up and definitely see a lot of the activity. for every cyclist participating. there are 10 staff members that travel with them to help coordinate everything involved in the planning, travel and the logistics, the amgen tour people. they travel with 1100 for the race. race organizers expect thousands of spectators to line the streets to watch. that is why it is in the middle of downtown santa rosa. they are expecting it to take off. we will show you video of the race from last year. today's race. stage one cyclists will circuit

where crews continue to get ready for this race. >> reporter: they're wrapping up the finishing touches on this course. the race will kick off just before 11:00. this is the starting point at third and santa rosa avenue in downtown santa rosa. 24e6 it just about completed here. this is where 128 cycles will take off for stage 1 of the amgen tour of california. there's at least 100 people in this area lined up for a front row spot to watch the race when it starts. stage 1 today. cyclists will circuit a couple of times through downtown, all these people will see it up close before they go through sonoma county, wine country and on to the coast. then they end up back here in downtown santa rosa around 4:00. there is a lot of setup involved. for every cyclist competing there are 10 staff members who travel with them. we have video of the setup they did earlier this morning.

you could hear the saws, hammers going as they were setting up the course. a lot of planning involved and basically an entourage of 1200 people that travel with the cyclist. the city's economic director here in santa rosa says that all provides a big boost to local economy. >> the race actually travels around 1200 staff people, and that doesn't include all the people who follow it. the teams frequently travel with additional, so that's additional rooms that are you know, at market rates. so all of that is a return. >> reporter: now, the city did have to fund race about half a million dollars to host the race. they had to put some money in to get the race but when they add up all the spending, they believe the city gets about a $7 million return on their investment. here is the map of where cyclists go from here. an eight-day race and cyclists will be in the bay area for the first three days of it. tomorrow san francisco, san

releases his revised budget. >> we're now facing a $16 billion hole. not to 9 billion we thought in january. this means that we will have to go much further and make cuts far greater than i asked for at the beginning of the year. >> the governor gave a glimpse of the grim projections through this youtube video. he blamed the ballooning deficit on a slow economic recovery, and federal judges and administrators for blocking cuts and healthcare for the poor. he warned to expect a new round of cuts in areas including education. state workers' compensation and welfare. we talked to a mother in contra costa county who fears the situation will only get worse for her children. >> i work hard, and i pay my taxes and i want to get a good education. we're trying to get the kids in college and a good education for that. california is supposed to be people move here because it's great. it's california. but we are definitely in a bad place. >> governor brown says voters must approve tax hikes in november temporarily raising

loss of two california college students killed while studying abroad in new zealand. a van carrying a group of tourists heading to a national park overturned friday afternoon. 3:people were killed, including 21-year-olds rock jaberdy of woodland hills and austin bresheers of huntington beach. they were undergrads at boston university. >> i opened my phone, and i called my voice mail, praying that there would be some old message from you in the saved messages. and there was. >> the students were on their way to hike across a famous volcanic crater when the crash occurred. new zealand authorities aren't sure what caused the van to drift off to the side of the road and flip over. four people are dead and one person is critically injured after a plane crash in kansas city, missouri. they were on their way to a christian youth rally in iowa friday afternoon when the plane went down. all of the crash victims had ties to oral roberts

university. four are recent graduates, and the fifth used to teach at the school. a national transportation safety board says there were no distress calls before the crash. the numbers are in from the c.h.p.'s campaign to crack down on distracted drivers. during april, the c.h.p. reminded the public of the dangers of distracted driving, as part of their it's not worth it campaign. 5900 citations were issued last month in the bay area, roughly 30,000 citations were issued statewide. a new report shows san francisco spends more than other cities on street maintenance but it still has some of the worst streets. according to the city controller's office, san francisco spent $49 million last year on street repairs. much more than other large cities that were surveyed for the report. that report also finds 58% of the city's roads are considered to be in fair condition. which is lower than the survey average. and in the city of oakland, it's taking steps to get rid of its potholes.

a huge blow to the hopes of bringing peace to afghanistan. an assassin gunned down a top member of the afghan peace council at a traffic stop in kabul. the victim was a former taliban commander, now working with the government to set up talks with insurgents. the assassin fired one shot with a silencer. despite the murder, afghanistan is moving towards a security force with few americans. the afghan government announced today that it's taking the lead from the u.s.-led coalition in providing security in areas that will eventually make up 75% of the country's population. this stage in the transition process should be complete in six months. the process is a key part of nato's exit strategy from afghanistan. meanwhile, the u.s. could discard an expensive police academy in iraq. the program was supposed to help speed the transition to an iraqi police force, but the operation has already cost a half billion dollars. iraqis are also questioning its effectiveness. the number of american trainers is dropping from 350 down to

at least 44 people have died after mudslides and heavy rain hit parts of china. more than 2 dozen other people are missing and 150,000 need emergency housing. the storm also knocked out power in the area, and right now relief teams are passing out blankets and clothing. the central government says it will provide funds for relief work and rebuilding. now an up close view of a tornado lifting large parts of a building right into the air. that tornado tore through grand isle, louisiana wednesday afternoon. the force of the storm moved trailers and ripped roofs off of buildings. power was knocked out for several hours and despite the damage, there were no reports of any serious injuries. a seattle man is safe this morning after falling 160 feet down while skiing in british columbia.

nikolai popov was rescued a few hours after his fall on friday and survived that ordeal without a scratch. popov says he stayed optimistic but he knows the outcome could have been a lot worse. >> it treated me better than it could have, because there were another at least 20 meters down. and you could have got stuck there. >> well, another person who had been skiing ahead of him noticed that popov disappeared and called search and rescue. it took more than two hours before he was pulled out, they used a rope and pulley system. a hiker from washington state is recovering after he spent four days lost in the woods in olympic national park. a helicopter spotted 55-year- old david snyder early yesterday morning. snyder told rescuers he lost his glasses and made some wrong turns off the trail. rescuers say snyder was dehydrated and slightly hypo they are milk but overall appeared to be in good condition. 9:25 on this mother's day. i know my wife has to work for

vote but he told supporters the different recall efforts caused confusion and there wasn't enough time to gather all the required names. there is now one recall group left. it has until july 2 to collect all the needed signatures. concord police are searching for a woman accused of beating an acquaintance with a lamp. her husband's already been arrested, 31-year-old ricardo jimenez. the couple got into an argument with a woman at their home last night and beat her with a lamp. the 29-year-old victim was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life threatening. police say the woman they're looking for is named marissa and her last name is either jimenez or durantes. a skyline high school senior who was shot and killed by oakland police, his family held a march this weekend. yesterday's march started on nooned avenue and birch street near the area where 18-year-old allen blooford was killed last sunday. it ended with a rally at the eastmont mall police station. police say he ran from officers

and then pointed a gun at them. bluford's mother says she does not believe her son had a gun and the shooting was not justified. >> we know alvin's life is going to save a lot of young men all over america. not just in oakland, but we're not going to stand for them killing our babies and ripping our hearts apart. >> the shooting is under investigation by police internal furrs department, as well as the alameda county district attorney's office. a mural in memory of oscar grant has a new home in west oakland. the 22-year-old man was shot to death by a bart police officer on new year's day in 2009. the ribbon mural was created by children at mosswood park about a year and a half ago. since then organizers have been looking for a permanent place for the artwork. the owner of the revolution cafe at seventh street near peralta offered a spot for that mural. years of stress and exams came to a grand conclusion in berkeley.

north bay representative lynn woolsey tells politico says resheriff shows that breast- feeding is good for a child's growth and development. she added, quote but the decision over how long to breast-feed and whether to breast-feed at all, is an intensity personal one that each mother needs to make for herself. a man is in stable condition after getting bitten by a rattle snake in livermore. the contra costa times reports the 29-year-old victim was swimming yesterday near swallow bay. he thought the baby snake was dead in the water, so he tried to pick it up but the rattler bit him on the thumb. he was air lifted to eden hospital in castro valley. according to the paper rattle snake sightings in common in this park. police have increased enforcement to improve motorcycle safety. extra officers are now patrolling areas frequented by motorcycle illists and where motorcycle crashes have occurred.

between 1998 and 2008, motorcycle fatalities jumped by 175% throughout california. that trend, though, began to change in 2009 and 2010, when fatalities decreased by 37% since the 2008 peak. petaluma police started its motorcycle safety operations in 2009. a petalumma man is accused of reckless driving and child endangerment after he was pulled over yesterday morning. police say 41-year-old juan gallegos was driving 104 miles an hour yesterday morning along lakeville highway. gallegos's nine-year-old son and his son's friend were in the car. he told police he was speeding because he was late to their soccer game in davis. gallegos was booked into sonoma county jail on $15,000 bail. good morning to you. happy mother's day. a live look outside our door. still plenty of gray out there socked in by fog along the

hour from now, and ktvu's ally rasmus is live at the starting line in santa row is a, where 128 cyclists will soon take off. it's looking busy out there. >> reporter: it's getting a lot more crowded. the race starts an hour from now. the cyclists participates aren't here yet but their escorts are. there's a row of 40 motorcycles at the end of the street. they'll be escorts the cluster of bike racing cyclists as they head out. this is the starting line on this side of us. there are hundreds of people lined up to watch this stage 1 of the amgen tour of california. they're going through a 116 mile course. as you can see there are a lot of people who snatched up these front row seats to watch the start of the race. it should get started just before 11:00 this morning. the city of santa rosa's economic specialist we talked to told us this 8-day tour is like a traveling circus.

1200 people travel with the 128 cyclists taking part and those 1200 staff members helped coordinate, plan the although jisks, and set -- the logistics and set up the course through downtown santa rosa. the city had to 0 fund raise about $500,000 to lost this race but with all the extra people in town they estimate this race brings in a total of about $7 million in economic impact. >> i have been a big fan of the tour de france, and i'm never going to go to france to see it. i thought i'll come this year, i could milk it down >> good for business and money. that's what we're here for. >> how many more people come in? >> in an after day we average 500 customers per day. on a day like this probably 1500 to 2000 customers coming in here. >> reporter: that was the owner of the fourth street market and deli which is located right in downtown santa rosa in the middle of this stage 1 course. the first stage starts and ends here in santa rosa, so a lot of the spending is the fans and

paragliding in southern california has died. the 52-year-old ran into a cliff yesterday afternoon, in torrey pines north of san diego. life guards rappeled down to rescue her and a helicopter lifted her to the cliff side where she was pronounced debt. some surfers who saw her go down think they know what went wrong. >> there's a partial collapse of the wing, so she kind of just fell down that way. >> that surfer says he immediately started motioning to a life guard and paddles in to make sure the life guards knew what had happened. the san diego life guard service says the wind was normal at the time of the crash. a wildfire near sunflower, arizona has burned nearly 2000 acres of land. that fire broke out yesterday at the tonto national forecast. and authorities say there are no camp grounds in that area, but they are asking camper phos leave the grounds throughout the area. crews have concerns about the heat and low humidity making containment more difficult. no word yet on what sparks the
