opening bell. >> mornings on two starts right now. good morning to you. >> it is friday, may 18th. topping the news this morning, facebook going public, trading of its shares won't begin for at least an hour, due in part to nasdaq rules for ipos, but they're already celebrating at facebook headquarters. news chopper 2 flew over a packed facebook campus a half hour ago when mark zuckerberg is remotely rang the opening bell. it's the richest ipo in tech history. >> reporter: that's right. the first day of public trading, the company is expected to be value at more

than a hundred billion dollars. certainly an historic ipo. no one from facebook so far speaking to us folks if the media this morning, but we know there is a ton of activity here and a lot of employees. we're on hand this morning as facebook officially went public. there was the moment as ceo mark zuckerberg rang nasdaq's opening bell remote through here at facebook headquarters. many of these employees have been on hand since last night. they were here for what's called a hack-a-thon at headquarters, where employees are free to work at whatever projects they want to work on. we'll show you the scene has changed significantly from a half hour ago, where you had a huge number of people in that

china. a 2012 mercedes benz is the car suspected in the event. also a new report out, blasting a small state police force for loading up on overtime on taxpayers money. the office of protect everyone services protecting state run mental health facilities including some here in the bay area. an investigation reveals the agency paid about $2 million in overtime to 80 of its officers last year alone. that includes hundreds of extra hours to patrol the formerring a new developmentle center in san jose months after that facility closed down. the city of san jose plans to start cleaning up some of the city's home'sstlessle camps. three sites will be targeted including one on communications hill at the end of the month. two others will be cleaned up

in june. san jose city leaders are agreed to take action after hearing from angry community members at meetings this week. the santa clara valley water district and the conservation corps will team up with the city for those clean yips. pg & e crews are trying to restore power to hundreds of customers in novato. strong winds may have toppled the lines. here are live pictures from the scene. a spokesman tells us 560 customers are still affected. their service should be restored around 8:30 or 9:00 this morning. at the height of the outage, 7,000 customers were affected. a two-year-old child has been hospitalized with a suspected case of a potentially deadly blood infection. the child from the willis area

may have a string that affects the bloodstream and attacks organs, and caused by the same virus that causes meningitis. about 60 people thought to have had contact with the child are being treated. the same disease coupled a three-year-old in february. parents being warned of the consequences if their children cut class. parents of students at deer valley lie school who often miss class will be subpoenaed to attend a meeting. this week administrators met with parents and students at an tee i don't care high school. the parents were told if students continue to mission class, the next school year the parents could be taken to court, fined up to $2,000, and possibly even spend a year in jail. students can also be fined, as well as lose privileges like their driver's license.

new legislation has been introduced to change the university of california's out of state student policy. u.c. already caps out of state enrealment to 10% throughout the system, but uc berkeley and ucla are over the limit. the new legislation, out of state enrollment would be limited to 10% out all u.c. campuses. however, admissions are already set by the university, not the legislature. muni wide row riders can get everything they need in just one step now. an app for android and iphones is being offered called muni plus. it will let riders know when the bus stop will arrive, and let them check the balance of their clipper cards, and locate bus stops. other apps have had some of those features, but this is the

but the fog forms really fast even under less than ideal joins do think it will be back sunday for the beta breakers, and i would have a back plan for viewing of the eclipse. but it's mostly clear this morning. the big news this morning is it's clear, but also really cool. i did find a 38 up in lower lake, in lake county, so there were some cooler readings, and a lot of low 40s to mid-40s, but weir starting to warm up right now. cool numbers. 58 to 72 by noon, and then 60 to 80, and some upper 70s here. the coolest areas were around 42. the napa airport was 42. they're now 47.

setting, and the president holds it at camp david for this reason. >> reporter: we'll take a closer look at the impact of france's withdrawal plans in about an hour in my next report. nato now reporting that rockets crashed into an american base, and also into a house in northeast afghanistan today, killing two nato service members and three civilians. right now we don't know the nationallalties of the troops who were killed. we don't even have any other details. so far this year 154 nato service members have been killed in that war, at least 100 of them were americans. well, california's two u.s. senators now demanding answers after last week's scathing report on oakland's veteran affairs office. they called the current situation unacceptable. the oakland va office handles

arby's has apologized and promised a full investigation. >> it's one of the things that we've got to do some more research and is investigation on exactly how that happened. >> the michigan health department has few allowed the restaurant to reopen after talking to workers and conducting an inspection. you might remember a similar story here the bay area several years ago. this woman claimed she found a finger in her chile at a wendy's restaurant in san jose. she later went to prison after police learned her story was a hoax. bart police trying to track down the family of a home's man who is at the center ore of tragic mystery. samwide was found un-- sam wide was found unconscious and bleeding at a bart station. he died due to complications from critical head and brain injuries. we still still don't know if he fell or was the victim of a

violent crime. he was six feet tall, about 200 pounds, had brown hair, hazel eyes. family members or witnesses who have any information should call bart police right away. a local beautification group is suing san francisco over the lawsuit the city settled with an outdoor advertising company. now, the settlement required metro fuel to remove 84 illegal panel signs. but it all allowed them to remove bigger legal billboards and replace them with more panel signs on walls across the city. san francisco beautiful is claiming that that settlement violates proposition g, which bans new billboards in the city. however, city officials say the settlement was a smart move, because metro fuel was trying to overturn proposition g. >> it is 7:20. are we in for more cool tells?

a growing wildfire near fort collins, colorado. the evacuees have been allowed back home, but are being told to be ready to leave again at a moment's notice. fire officials believe a human started this fire, but they're still investigating. meantime, the entire community of crown king, arizona, has also been evacuated because of wildfire threats. this fire has already destroyed three homes and a trail in his

historic mining town. firefighters are focusing their efforts on protect something of the other structures, but it's very windy out there, and that's what they're up against. the forest service is battling two other wildfires burning in arizona right now. >> i just read a report out there predicting it will be a warmer than normal summer for most of the bay area, and that's not good news for firefighters. all right. let's check in on traffic. >> we have an accident and a traffic hazard. we start in hayward, 880 southbound at whipple road. a three-car crash here, minor injuries. that is the good news, but also have an accident at castro county east boulevard. chp is en route. and near the oakland coliseum at 880. you can see it's a lot busier

>> i worked on the trading floor of montgomery securities during a very busy ipo market, and let me tell you, it is very exciting, and it certainly was exciting this morning. we watched mark zuckerberg ring that opening bell live remote through from the menlo park headquarters. quite a crowd out there. it does take a while for the stock to start trading on the nasdaq and the new york stock exchange as well, but particular lip the nasdaq. -- particularly the nasdaq. part of it, also, giving some undivided attention to the end when it starts trading. it's quite a coup for the nasdaq to get facebook. zinga and groupon, and angie's list have also recently been traded on nasdaq. >> it will be up from $38.

where it closes, probably somewhere in the middle there, and then all bets are off, because the excitement will die down. >> reporter: or will it? the excitement may not die down right away. a lot of people comparing facebook to google's ipo. google priced at $85 when it went public. it went straight up to $100 a share. now we know google more than $600 a share. at facebook headquarter this morning. it's certainly a beautiful day for ut's bono -- u2's bono. he is now the richest man in music. his total shares are now worth $1.5 billion. he beats out sir paul mccartney, the richest musician, who is worth about a billion dollars. so will the hype die down? right now retail demand for facebook, the highest every for

hp's stock is down about 1% right now, i just checked. new information about an overnight crash in berkeley. investigators are say a driver slammed into a tree on california stream a couple of hours ago, and one person was killed. lorraine has been out there since 4:30, and just talked to the authorities about two people who survived this. lorraine? >> reporter: yes, dave. police just told us that both the child and the male drivers are suffering from potential life-threatening injuries this morning. the car is registered in don'ten, california. there was so much damage to that car that firefighters worked hard to cut into it and get the people inside out of the crushed car. a female passenger in our 20s died at the scene. the male driver was transported to the hospital in oakland, and a small child it was transported to children's

hospital. >> we're not certain, you know, exactly where these three were from, whether they were from out of town or from the city, but we hope to be able to nail that down quickly, because we do want to share with them that their loved ones are in the hospital. >> reporter: investigators are looking into whether alcohol or drugs may be a factor in this deadly crash. no other cars were involved. again, we're near california and alston, and the streets here are still close off with police tape. it could take another 30 minutes to an hour for police to finish their investigation and reopen these streets nearby. right now in oakland, investigators want to know if an arsonist is responsible for an overnight carport fire. this started shortly after midnight on 90th avenue. the flames destroyed one car. firefighters managed to keep it from spreading across the carport to an apartment

building nearby. several people ran out of their homes after hearing a loud bang. >> i heard a big boom, and i ran outside, the place was so high, it's scary. >> luckily no one was hurt, but those flames caused a lot of damage to that carport, as you can see, still no definite word is on how the fire started, but arson investigators are safe the fire may well have been intentionally set. oakland police are investigating a double shooting. police say they responded to 65th avenue around 9:00 last night after a woman reported that her son had been shot. officers also found a female wounded about a block away. both were taken to the hospital, and their injuries are said to be nonlife- threatening. neighbors say they heard about 20 shots. no evidence in the trayvon man shooting case in -- martin shoot case in florida. it involves more information

a court hearing scheduled today to consider a request to remove 100 coffins out of 0 an old graveyard found at valley medical center in san jose. officials announced this week that construction crews unearthth the coffins back in february. >> are said to date back to 1875. that's when they site used to be a cemetery for families that couldn't afford burial cost. if santa clara county gets permission to remove the coachens, an archaeologist will be hired and sent in, and they'll be trying to track down family members. new information on a story we first brought to you yesterday about a man who was rescued by firefighters after he fell 30 feet down an embankment along highway 92 in san mateo. he called 911 about 2:00 yesterday morning saying he needed help. the man initial through said he had fallen down the embankment

so far this month. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is currently up 22, the nasdaq is up 5. still waiting for that facebook stock to start trading under the symbol fb, and s&p is up 2. apple is riding the tech wave. apple stock is up nearly 2% right now, but it's no longer a member of the $500 billion club. the company stock has been on a steady decline. it has lost nearly 18% of its value since it set an all-time high of $644 just last month. right now it's trading at $539. new evidence has been revealed in the trayvon martin shooting case. we have a live report from miami about what we're learning. phil? >> reporter: good morning. it's a massive document dump. this is basically the state's

case in its second-degree murder charge case against george zimmerman. much of the information is redacted, blacked out, but what is still public now is that 7- eleven surveillance shape showing trayvon martin, the 17- year-old teenager who would be dead within about 15 or 20 minutes, at the 7-eleven buy it will the skittles, and that fruit juice flavored in water melon. also the injuries of george zimmerman are no longer clearly in dispute. he clearly took a beating. there are cuts all over the back of his head, the front of his head, his nose clearly had been broken. and here is how one witness describes what he saw out his door. he says clearly the guy with the hoody was the guy on top. >> there was a black man with a black hoody on top of either a

white guy or now that i found out, think it was an hispanic guy with a red sweatshirt on, on the ground yelling out help. i tried to tell him get out of here, stop, or whatever, and then the one guy on top in the black hoody was pretty much just throwing down blows on the guy, kind of mma style, on the concrete at this point. so at this point, i told him i was calling 91. i locked my door, went inside. herd a pop, had never heard a gunshot before, so didn't know if it was a rock or something like that. i looked down below from upstairs and saw the guy in the black hoody just pretty much laid out any the ground. >> also in the rodio recordings that have been made public is the audio statement made by the 16-year-old girlfriend of trayvon martin who was on the cellphone with trayvon as is he was walking back to his father's fiancee house that sunday in february. she told the state investigator

that trayvon martin described a white man was following her and that he sounded pretty scared, and she said that she overhears zimmerman off of trayvon martin's phone saying what are you doing here? no witnesses say exactly what happened next, other than george zimmerman and traves martin, and, of course george zimmerman is the only one who is still alive to talk about it. he is charged with second- degree murder, and the state's case against him basically boils down to it does not matter that he was being beaten up by trayvon martin, what matters is that he instigated the entire episode, and, according to the lead investigator, his conclusion was that the entire incident could have been avoided had george zimmerman simply remained in his vehicle and waited for law enforcement. back to you. >> thank you for that report from florida. time now 7:48. back here at home, oakland

raiders linebacker mcclain has been sentenced to 180 days in jail after a fight last year in his alabama home town. the 22-year-old sealedly threatened to kill a man, and fired a gunshot next to that man's head. the judge found mcclain guilty on all charges. mcclain's lawyer said his client will appeal and have s for a jury trial. the nfl is going to review the case to see if more punishment is needed. >> the jury in the john edwards trial started their deliberations about 45 minutes ago. coming up at 8:45, we'll bring you will a live report from the court thousand in north carolina. we'll tell you what's on the line for john edwards in convicted. the post office is moving forward with a multi-billion

good morning. welcome back. >> it is friday. it's may 18th. well, shares of facebook are scheduled to start trading right now. now, the initial public offering price is $38. we're looking at its price now at $43, but the stock is really expected to really have a bang today. alex savage has been at the company's headquarters, at facebook, as it's going public. you've been out there since early this morning. what is it like out there now, alex? >> reporter: if you think there's a big celebration going on inside facebook headquarters here behind me this morning, well, you night want to think again. a representative from facebook just told me a couple of minutes ago off camera, she says it is really and truly business as usual inside, even on the day of the company's historic ipo. by the end of the trading day today, facebook is expected to be worth more than $100

billion. and this was the scene, 6:30 this morning, as facebook officially went public, a major celebration on the facebook campus here in menlo park. ceo mark zuckerberg rang nasdaq's opening bell remote through from the headquarters. they sold $421 million shares, $38 a pop, making mark zuckerberg the 29th richest portion in the world. but most of it will go off to pay off tax debt associated with exercising the stock option. it will also turn about a thousand facebook employees into instant millionaires. many have been here since last night. but even on this historic day from facebook, no one from the company talking publicly as of yesterday. i talked to a social media analyst who explained the strategy. >> anytime you have a company

people inside out of the crushed car. the male driver was transported to high land hospital in oakland, and a small child was transported to children's hospital, but suffering potentially life threatening injuries. a neighbor who ran out of his home said 7 hours later, he's still shaken up. >> the guy was in so much pain and agony, and by me not being able to get into the back door to rescue the little kid, that was very disturbing to me. i couldn't help render any help, so, you know, it was very -- i'm very upset. >> reporter: investigators are looking into whether alcohol or drugs may be a factor in this deadly crash. no other cars were involved. we're near california and austin, and the streets near here are still closed off with police tape. no update on when they will be opened. police tell us they really need help with more witnesses, so if you have any information, call berkeley police. ktvu channel 2 news.

investigators are trying to find out if an arsonist is responsible for an early morning carport fire. it started shortly after midnight on 90th avenue. the fire destroyed one car, but firefighters managed to keep the flames from spreading across the carport to an apartment building near buy. a mother of three small children came running out of her home after hearing a scary sound. >> i heard a big boom and ran outside. the blaze was so high, it's scary. >> no one was hurt, but the flames caused major damage to the carport. there's still to definitive word on the cause, but arson investigators say the fire may have been intentionally set. time now 8:34. we just got new information about that power outage in novato. our photographer, these are live pictures, folks, our photograph they are at the scene just talked to a resident who says according to the resident, they received a text message from pg&e. the power won't be back on

until 2:00 this afternoon. pg&e was hoping to fix everything by 9:00 this morning. again, you're looking at live pictures from that scene. fright now, about 560 people have no electricity in that part of novato. last night about 7,000 people lost their power after two distribution lines and a power pole crashed down on sequoia glen lane. pg&e is investigating whether strong winds are to blame. a two-year-old child is in the hospital now with a suspected case of a potentially deadly blood infection. the child illits area, and they have a bloodstream problem. that attacks the organs. it's caused by the same group of bacteria that causes meningitis. now, the infection can be spread by kissing, coughing, or 0 even sneezing. about 60 people thought to have had some contact with this

child are being treated. this same disease killed a three-year-old back in february. it is 8:35. a 57-year-old bicyclist was killed in a crash in napa county along the silverado trail about 6:30 yesterday even thing highway patrol said the manner was riding southbound when the member of a ford focus drifted into the bike lane hitting the cyclist. the 20-year-old woman behind the wheel is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and the cause is still under investigation. san francisco police are searching for three men they believe are responsible for several bank robberies. police say the man in the center of your screen walked into a bank at weigh and front streets on april 30th and demanded money from the teller. he is also a suspect in other bank robberies in san francisco, as well as one in green bray earlier this week. police say the man on the left of the screen is an accomplice

to one of the robberies. he is missing three fingers troop his right hand, and two from his left. the man on the right is wanted for several other bank robberies throughout the financial district. the so-called brian toe bill is closer to becoming state how -- brian stow bill is closer to becoming state law. brian stow was attacked outside dodgers stadium last year. other high-profile events involve fights during a preseason game between the 49ers and the raiders. the state assembly unanimously approved the measure. now it goes to the state institute. it requires professional sports stadiums and arenas to post a phone number for security in the parking lots, and also in the stands. well, the oakland a's will play the giants at at&t park tonight. it's the start of a three-game series. however, baseball commissioner bud selig is raising the possibility the a's may leave the bay area.

right now a jury in north carolina is deliberating john edwards fate. we have a live report from outside the courthouse. good morning, jonathan. >> reporter: good morning. a lot sat stake, because at least in theory, if convicted on all six counts of various campaign finance violations, john edwards could face up to $1.5 million in fines, and 30 years in prison. now, what the jury must consider is whether john edwards was, first of all, aware of the secret money that went into is hiding his pregnant mistress during his 2008 bid for president, and then whether the more than was

simply private gifts to protect him from his wife finding out about his affair, or whether the money was intended as something more, to keep his campaign on track, therefore being campaign finance violations. during that election cycle, there was a $2300 individual donor cap, so if you divide the nearly million dollars in question from these two wealthy donors, that's well in excess of that cap. so prosecutors are arguing that these are campaign donations. the defense arguing that these are simply private funds with no limit. now, in addition to looking at the alleged campaign finance violations, the jury has also been asked to consider whether this, the middle district of north carolina federal court district, is the appropriate venue for this trial. with federal courts, the trials have to be held within the district where the alleged crimes occurred. throughout this trial, the defense has been arguing that

probably keeping an eye on this morning. the nasdaq composite. fb, the symbol for facebook. it opened up at $38 a share, and at this point, it is not really much higher than that right now, only -- right now moving to about $38 a share, but it did have a significant pop right out of the gate. earlier on this morning, everyone here at facebook, all of the employees, got together, and they watched their ceo ring the opening bell. and this was facebook officially going public this morning at 6:30. ceo mark zuckerberg rang nasdaq's opening bell remotely from facebook headquarters here in menlo park. me social media giant sold the shares at $38 a stock. this will turn about a thousand facebook employees into instant millionaires, but impawn this historic day from facebook, no one on the company this morning

is talking publicly. the one person who is talking, the mayor of menlo park. she told us a short time ago, she's thrilled that the home town company is being traded publicly. >> it just is wonderful to have facebook in menlo park. every time you hear the word facebook, you hear menlo park now, and i think it helps build this area, more people will want to have businesses here, and i think there will be spin- offs from this as well that will be exciting to watch over the years. >> reporter: the mayor also said she has a busy day today. she'll be coming back here to facebook headquarters and meeting with other county leaders and requires from facebook as well. this ipo will make mark zuckerberg potentially the 29th richest person in the world, but the known he get from selling off his shares will mostly go to pail off the tax bill associated with exercising those stock options. nasdaq trading is underway here. facebook stock is being traded publicly, and sat last check, it's pretty much where it started, at about $38 a share
