morning. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> and good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday, may 19th. i'm claudine wong. >> and good morning, everyone. i'm mike mibach. giants and as definitely an action packed weekend in the bay area. let's get over to rosemary and a quick peek at the forecast. >> a nice weekend in store if you like it sunny, you like it warm, even a few degrees above yesterday's highs, the winds generally light, a little bit of breeze in the afternoon. this morning waking up cool. we will take a look at your current conditions and what you can expect for your weekend. and happening now, firefighters are on the scene of an early morning fire in oakland. it started a little after 4:00 this morning near 34th and broadway and when crews went inside they discovered more than just fire damage. ktvu's allie rasmus joining us live from the scene with a look at the investigation now underway. >> reporter: the fire started just after 4:00 this morning and this building that we are standing in front of, this is

oakland's auto row. firefighters still out here. they have got three ladder trucks on both sides of the block shooting their water cannons into the building. they are still trying to tackle some of the hot spots that continue to flare up and if you look at the front of the building, though, it's not clear what type of business this is. the sign isn't very well marked, but when firefighters went into the building, they discovered what was going on there. they found in the back of the building evidence of a marijuana grow operation. when we went back there, we could see about a dozen pot plants in the back, some of them weren't even damaged by the fire or the smoke. the grow lights and fans overhead were also still intact and firefighters say it appears this fire started in the back of this building where the grow operation was located. this is what the fire looked like when it was a three alarm, flames shot 15 to 20 feet into the air. no one inside the building at the time, no firefighters were hurt. although firefighters were concerned initially about the stability of this 100-year-old brick building. >> the building is an old

masonry building and it's connected to a building in the rear so it quickly spread to the building in the rear and gaining access to the building. >> reporter: fire investigators will be out here a little later on this morning once they get those hot spots out to determine the cause of the fire, oakland police are also going to be out here later on to conduct -- start a criminal investigation into that suspected marijuana grow operation that was in this burning building. meanwhile, though, back out here live, we are standing on broadway. this is broadway around 30th street and you can see all the fire trucks out here. there is very limited access. in fact, this part of the street is closed off to traffic so if you're driving through this area, be aware it's very limited access getting through here but firefighters are still working on getting this fire completely under control. live in oakland, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a house and car were damaged after a tree came down onto some powerlines around midnight firefighters were called to the corner of 61st street and colby. when they arrived, they saw a tree down on some lines and

those lines had burned the side of a house. the tree also landed on a car parked out there on the street. the car's owner says the size of the trees in the area is an ongoing problem. >> the neighborhood complained about the trees being messed up and about to break. nobody is coming out here to fix them, trimming them back or nothing. no maintenance on these trees at all and now they fell on my car. >> the trees were cut back once pg&e turned off power to the lines. in just about an hour, another search for a missing teenager seer era -- ciera lamar will begin. it has been more than two months since she was last seen by her mother. her bag and cell phone found near her home and police recently impounded a red volkswagen jetta in connection with her disappearance. santa clara county sheriff's department says it is also receiving tips thanks to coverage from americas most wanted. those tips include a sighting

of that jetta and suggestions where to search including the downtown area and closed homes in morgan hill as well as other potential areas of interest. on monday a fitness fundraiser will be held for ciera lamar from 6:00 to 7:15 at fitness zone west in marina. all proceeds going to go towards the effort to find her. a man hit by a train on the peninsula early this morning has survived. it happened on the caltrain tracks around 12:30 a.m. caltrain officials say the last train of the day, southbound train 198 hit the man at baze wonder avenue in burlingame. the man was transported to the hospital about 500 people were on the train at the time. the track was reopened shortly before 2:00 a.m. an attorney has been arrested for the hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist in dublin. police say 32-year-old spencer freeman smith of san ramon hit the cyclist tuesday night. investigators found parts of his new mercedes at the crash site on doherty road.

they used i.d. numbers found on the carports to trace them to smith's car. police say they found the damaged car inside smith's garage in san ramon and towed it away. neighbors say they are shocked. >> i don't believe that that man ran over somebody and kept going and that person is dead. >> accidents happen. you know, bicyclists can sometimes be at fault. you never know. >> smith, a father of two, was booked on charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run involving death or injury. he has been released on bail. the victim, 57-year-old bow hoa had been visiting the area from china. a woman and two dogs dead after a crash in sonoma county. the car was discovered before 4:00 p.m. yesterday. officials say the vehicle had apparently been underwater for hours before anyone noticed it. a 60-year-old woman inside was pronounced dead at the scene. the highway patrol is still trying to figure out how that

accident happened. new this morning, a new private rocket designed by a southern california company is stuck on the ground after a failed launch. >> three, two, one, zero, and lift-off. we've had a cutoff. >> as you heard, during the countdown on board computers stopped this morning's launch of the spacex falcon 9 rocket. an engine problem is suspected and another attempt will be made on tuesday. this was the first launch attempt of one of the private u.s. companies hoping to take over the job of delivering cargo and eventually astronauts to the space station. facebook's first day as a public company did not impress many of those on wall street. facebook priced its initial public offering at $38 a share. it ended just 23 cents higher, far less than what some economists had predicted and while the average investor did not get rich, many facebook

employees became millionaires. one real estate agent handed out fires -- fliers outside facebook's headquarters hoping new employees will look to buy homes with their new found fortune. >> first time i've been with an ipo company and the crowd and energy was awesome in there. >> surprising in the grand scheme of ipos because typically technology companies you see on average about a 30% pop. >> when google went public in 2004, it finished 18% higher on its first day. linkedin ended up 49% higher on its first day last year. meanwhile, the securities and exchange commision will investigate the technical glitches that delayed executing trades throughout the day. some investors waited hours to learn if their orders even went through. economists say facebook's less than stellar start caused other social media stocks to tumble. trading was halted twice yesterday for san francisco game developer zynga. it closed down 13%.

mont -- >> i do not give interviews to news. >> protesters range from the global economy to food safety. frustrated business owners say the demonstrators are keeping customers away this weekend. inside the g8 summit sources say president obama is receiving wide support against iran's nuclear buildup and serious crackdown on its people. president obama greeted the leaders of seven other major industrial nations including england's prime minister david cameron and the german chancellor. the leaders are discussing both diplomacy and sanctions against iran as well as finding profits for political change in syria. i poked my head outside the studio before i came in, absolutely before morning. a lot of activity is going on in the bay area of san francisco all across the area. >> you're right and it's going to be nice. it's going to be warm out there along the coast of -- mild we will call it but for our inland spots, upper 70s to low 80s in the forecast for your afternoon, that will be a few degrees warmer than what we felt on friday.

outside our door this morning, mostly clear skies, a few patches of fog floating around the area but not a whole lot. we are seeing some jets up against the coastline, it will burn back and have mostly clear skies across our area today. a little bit of haze. good air quality for today. 50 degrees at san rafael right now, 49 san francisco, low 50s fairfield, concord down into livermore, 40s in areas right around napa as well as santa rosa and along the coastline this morning, low 40s to mid- 40s. a cool start at the coast with again partly cloudy skies and a little bit of cloud and fog deck along there. we've got the inversion layer and the cloud deck about the 1400 feet this morning. not going to spread inland. i'm going to run this through and notice how quickly it burns off by about 9:00 or so, 10:00 it's outside just right there at the gate and then it will continue off the coastline so we are looking at partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies for your afternoon today, wall wall-to- wall sunshine and into the evening hours looks like it may pull back in but we will

already be into about sunset, about 8:17 this evening. your pacific satellite view, ridge of high pressure in place, we have this trough back here. this will be the next mechanism to cool us back. it looks like late sunday into monday we will begin to feel that so along the coastline for tomorrow, perhaps slightly cooler by the afternoon. our inland areas will be just as warm, for today, mostly sunny skies, the numbers are up and the winds anywhere from five to 15 miles per hour, so not as breezy as we have seen in the last couple of days, not everybody seeing that wind but it was quite gusty in some spots, upper 80s is where we are expecting some of the warmest temperatures to be so you can see that trend there from yesterday and what we are expecting for today and tomorrow. 82 degrees for novato today, 84 in santa rosa, upper 60s for areas around sausalito. mid- 80s for danville as well as livermore, down into the south

good morning to you. a live look there at the oakland estuary. a small community outside sacramento got its first scare of the fire season. helicopters were performing water drops on a grass fire in the small community of herald east of galt. most people that live neither this grove of eucalyptus trees say they weren't ready for this type of surprise. a captain used the 10-acre fire as a lesson in defensible space following a dry winter. >> especially this time of year, even a little earlier

this year, we are getting dry weather, and fuels are ready to burn. >> it don't blow one direction out here. it swirls. so it causes what everybody would think would be a tornado. >> the fire may have been small but cal fire says it is a warning of things possibly to come. in overnight news, a student killed in an explosion at an italian school. the girl said to be 16 years old died this morning after a bomb placed in a trashcan blew up. seven other students at the vocational high school were injured. the school is named after a murdered antimafia prosecutor who was killed in a mafia bomb blast 20 years ago this weekend. it's not clear if organized crime is connected to this morning's attack. well, blind chinese activist who caused a diplomatic crisis between the u.s. and china is on his way to the united states. chen guangcheng is on a flight to new jersey with wife and two children. he caused an uproar last month when he escaped from house arrest and hid at the u.s. embassy in beijing.

the self-taught legal activist who led campaigns for the disabled and fought for -- fought against forced abortions plans to study law at new york university. officials in washington are urging americans in saudi arabia to keep a low profile. the state department says terror groups could be planning an attack and that there's an ongoing security threat. potential targets include hotels and shops filled with westerners. u.s. recommends that americans be extra cautious getting in and out of vehicles and vary the hours when they travel around the saudi kingdom. an airline pilot is accused of flying with a loaded gun. federal prosecutors say a bag screener in buffalo saw the gun yesterday. pilot bret deter was arrested before he could fly the piedmont airlines flight to laguardia. investigators think he piloted seven flights with that gun since wednesday when he flew from virginia to new york without having his bag x-rayed. five people were taken to the hospital after smelling

fumes at ft. lauderdale's international airport. the gas like smell was decked yesterday afternoon near -- detected yesterday afternoon near one of the security check points. about 1000 people had to be evacuated from the terminal including reggie bush. firefighters don't know where the smell came from but say it could have been anything from gasoline to pepper spray to aerosol. >> we don't know what the substance is, whether it came from somebody's bag or whatever. if in fact it did. >> firefighters were brought in to vent the area. people were allowed back into the building about two hours later. new this morning, in his weekly address president obama is touting reforms to wall street. >> for the past 3 1/2 years we have been fighting our way back from an historic economic crisis, one caused by breath taking irresponsibility on the part of some on wall street who treated our financial system like a casino. >> president obama says jpmorgan chase's $2 billion trading loss is another example of wall street making risky

bets and mismanaging money. mr. obama says he worries that congress will undermine new rules that force big banks to hold more cash on hand so if they make a bad decision, they pay for their mistakes, not taxpayers. former republican presidential candidate newt gingrich is asking his home state to vote out president obama. >> he used to be a country where you paid off the mortgage and left your kids the farm. it has become a country with a politician sell the farm and leave the kids the mortgages. that's fundamentally immoral and wrong. >> last night gingrich spoke at the convention. he told the crowd mitt romney will pit conservative supreme court judges rather than radical judges. new reports give president obama an edge over romney but the numbers are dwindling. the president has $115 million in cash on hand, romney has 61 million, but analysts expect that difference to shrink in the future and that's because romney is expected to get more contributions now that he has a

virtual lock on the g.o.p. nomination. he also has the support of well financed superpacts. the president released his long form birth certificate months ago but not enough for some in arizona where there is now a ballot controversy. arizona's secretary of state ken bennett is requesting that hawaii's secretary of state confirm the president was born in hawaii. if he does not get an answer, bennett says the president may not be on the arizona ballot. this all started with the charge by controversial sheriff joe arpaio. >> when sheriff arpaio's posse released a press conference a few weeks ago or a month or whenever it was that the birth certificate posted on the white house website might be fraudulent, i started getting, as you might imagine, literally over 1200 e-mails. >> hawaii's attorney general says if bennett wants

confirmation he'll have to prove he legitimately needs it. hawaii has confirmed multiple times that obama was born there. the italian american group responsible for removing the capsized costa concordia out of the water has announced how they are going to do it. the ship is going to be lifted up and towed to an italian port all in one piece. that plan is designed to keep the environmental impact to a minimum. the costa concordia ran aground near tusk 93 in january -- tuscany in january. 32 people killed including two americans. salvage teams home to -- hope to have the ship out of the water by early next year. up next the six new reasons to visit san francisco's palace of fine arts. and has already burned thousands of acres of land and still going. the men now being held responsible for starting a massive fire in colorado. mostly clear skies, a little cool outside our door this morning but we have a rebound underway. we will take a look at what you can expect and if you're looking forward to the annual eclipse, we will take a peek at that as well.

flames race through an oakland warehouse early this morning but after the fire was out, firefighters made a different kind of discovery. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. the fire sparked just after 4:00 this morning near the intersection of 34th and broadway, multiple engines and ladder trucks were called in to knock down the flames and when firefighters went in, this story took another turn. ktvu's allie rasmus joining us live this morning from the scene to explain. allie. >> reporter: firefighters are getting a handle on this fire. half hour ago we saw three of their ladder trucks out here. now they have just got two. their water cannons or hoses are still aimed at the top of this building. they are still tackling some of the hot spots here. the first crews arriving on the

scene reported seeing flames coming from this building, hundred-year-old building that stretched 15 to 20 feet into the air. this was a 3-alarm fire at its worst when the fire started just after 4:00 this morning. luckily no one was inside the building, no firefighters were hurt tackling it. although they did mention it was a challenge for them to get access to this old building. it is a very long brick structure. it extends all the way to a block behind it where there are a lot of apartments and homes. so neighbors in that area watched this fire nervously hoping it wouldn't spread. >> i woke up to some sort of noise outside and i just looked across the street and saw huge flames coming out of the building out there and i grabbed my cat and grabbed a photo album and that's all i could take and that's all that matters. >> reporter: now, this is what firefighters discovered when they went into the back of the building. evidence of a marijuana grow operation. we saw about a dozen pot plants unscathed by the fire and the smoke and the water. there were even some grow

lights overhead and fans overhead that were also still intact and not damaged. firefighters believe the fire started in the back of the building near this grow operation. now, a little later on this morning, once the fire is completely out, fire investigators are going to be out here to determine the exact cause of the fire. oakland police will also be at the scene to start an investigation into that suspected marijuana grow operation. now in the meantime, to take you back out here live show you where we are, we are standing in the middle of broadway and you can see from all the fire trucks out here, there is no traffic, other traffic coming through here, so broadway between 30th and hawthorne is shut down to traffic for the time being, be aware of that if you're planning on coming through this area this morning. live in oakland, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the oakland school district police force is now the focus of a federal grand jury investigation. the grand jury is looking at two incidents including the fatal shooting of 20-year-old raheem brown by a school police sergeant. brown was allegedly trying to stab another officer with a screwdriver when he was shot.

the grand jury is also examining accusations that the school's police chief made racist remarks after a golf tournament. police in richmond are stepping up patrols after a series of shootings yesterday a ktvu photographer rode along with two officers. the officers say there's a feud going on between two gangs, one from central richmond, the other from north richmond. >> i don't want gang members from north richmond to come down here, drive by and shoot them up and have them shoot back and cause chaos for everybody, all the people who are not involved who are just trying to live their lives. >> richmond police say they are using a new program that targets gang members and directs them to jobs and social programs. they say overall violent crimes in the city is down the past two years. a judge has given the green light to dig up a long lost south bay cemetery. construction workers at valley medical center in san jose stopped the hammers after recently discovering part of a 19th snare cemetery -- century

cemetery. a judge yesterday signed a court order allowing county officials to remove as many remains as necessary to complete the construction project. >> the first thing we have to do is identify an appropriate professional to oversee the removal process. it's really important to us that it be done in a respectful and dignified manner. >> the county says a forensic anthropologist could be hired to lead the recovery. a start date has not been set. a $5000 reward is being offered for information about a sexual assault in oakland. police say it happened around 1:30 yesterday afternoon on holly street near 90th avenue. officers say a man forced a woman to the ground, sexually assaulted her and then ran off. the suspect is described as an african-american man in his 30s, 5'9", 160 pounds with a mustache. anyone with information should call the number there on your screen. the sacramento area seat community hopes a larger reward will help track down a killer. it was exactly one year ago

when someone shot and killed him at his home in elk grove. his wife was also shot but survived. the couple was part of the seat community which has raised the reward from $25,000 to $35,000. police believe the couple was targeted but say it was not a hate crime. a salinas lettuce grower voluntary recalled bagged salads after routine sampling detected listeria. river ranch fresh foods produced the contaminated packages of sledded iceberg lettuce. the bags contributed in california and colorado. the packages are sold under different names including farm stand and market side. the lettuce has already been pulled from stores and no illnesses have been reported. warn teens -- quarantines have been lifted. the illness did not come from cattle feed. the disease cow in tu lair

county -- tulare county has a form of the illness in jeans that hasn't caused illness in humans. the state's budget deficit could be even higher than the latest estimate. governor jerry brown first put the deficit at $9 million at the beginning of the year. then last week he went online and estimated the deficit had ballooned to $16 billion but now the state's legislative analyst projects california could be in a $17 billion hole. however, both the analyst and the governor expect the state's economy to improve by the end of the year. perhaps an indication is california's unemployment rate, it dipped to 10.9% last month. that was down just a bit from 11% in march. according to new data, the state added about 20,000 jobs in april. however, california remains well above the national unemployment rate of 8.1%. the golden state has the third highest unemployment rate in

the united states trailing only nevada and rhode island and right here in the bay area, the jobless numbers vary from county to county. take a look at the map here on the screen. marin county has the lowest rate at 6.4%. counties with the highest rates are solano and 10.2%, contra costa at 9.1 and alameda at 8.9%. uncle sam is helping out young people looking for a summer job. the federal government is announcing 20,000 new youth jobs. they involve building trails, clearing brush and cleaning up waterways in national parks. wildlife refuges and other public lands. the $4 million program involves 20 outdoor projects across the country. there's a new type of mob crowd sweeping the bay area and businesses are hoping they are the next target. cash mob's play on the idea of flash mobs where a group of people suddenly starts singing and dancing, except in this case instead of performing, cash mobs head to a local business and start spending money. petaluma's cash mob has about 500 members and so far they

have boosted business to a gift shop and a wireless store. >> i see some results after the fact, some people that came and, oh, i heard about the cash mob and they came later and days later so it was pretty nice. >> last night pongo's thai restaurant was selected. the owner says he got a lot of new customers last night and is hoping more continue to come. the cash mob says they operate under the principle if we each do a little, we all do a lot. we are just one day away from a well known san francisco tradition. tomorrow 40,000 people are registered to run the beta breakers, an event that just two years ago almost became extinct after the 2010 race sent people to the hospital. people living along the race route were complaining of the floats and intoxicated runners. >> instead of it being silly, it ended up being an ugly frat party. >> new rules in effect, these include no open containers, no

to reconvene on monday. edwards is charged with falsifying documents, taking illegal contributions and conspiracy. if convicted of all charges, he faces large fines and up to 30 years in prison. police say they have made arrests in last month's shooting deaths of two chinese grad students near usc. the lapd says they arrested two suspects but haven't released any more information. the students were shot on april 11th while sitting in a bmw about a mile from campus. the victims' parents filed a lawsuit last week alleging the school made false safety claims in its online application and did not say the school is in a high crime area. a 4-year-old texas boy is now in foster care after bringing $700 worth of crack cocaine to school. police say the drugs belonged to the child's parents and his uncle. the parents have been charged with child endangerment. the boy's father and uncle are accused of distributing a controlled substance. police called to the school on wednesday when the teacher noticed a child pulling baggies of the drug out of his pocket.

we will take a look at what you can expect for your area and we will take a look at those current conditions in case you're stepping outside your door this morning. all that coming up. a warehouse fire in oakland is now sparking a criminal investigation, want to show you a live picture from the scene right now at the corner of 34th and broadway. right now the area is shut down to traffic. the fire was first reported around 4:00 a.m. when firefighters arrived, they found dozens of marijuana plants in the back of the building. they say this made fighting the fire even more dangerous. >> with a growing facility, sometimes they set booby traps and such so we were concerned about that. >> later today fire investigators and oakland police will begin investigating the cause of the fire. so far it has not been determined that the possible growing operation is at fault. no one was injured in this blaze. people in oakland are wondering who will claim responsibility for an overgrown tree that fell onto powerlines, damaging a home and a car.

around midnight firefighters were called to the corner of 61st street and colby. when they arrived they saw a tree down and powerlines which were burning the side of a house. the tree also landed on a car parked on the street. the car's owner says the size of the tree in the area, that's a growing problem. >> the neighborhood had been complaining about the trees being messed up and about to break. nobody is coming out here to fix them, trimming them back or nothing. there's no maintenance on these trees at all and now it fell on my car. >> the trees were cut back once pg&e had turned off power to the lines. no major outages were reported and no one was hurt. police say a man was stabbed in the head early this morning in east palo alto. it happened on week street around 2:15. investigators say two suspects came up to the 39-year-old victim while he was sitting in his car. they demanded money and when the victim refused, he was stabbed. medics believe that he will

survive. call east palo alto police if you can help with the investigation. right now volunteers are gathering in morgan hill to begin another search for missing teenager sierra lamar. it has been more than two months since lamar was last seen by her mother. her bag and cell phone were found near her home and police impounded a red volkswagen jetta in connection with her disappearance. the sheriff's department says they are receiving tips thanks to coverage from "america's most wanted," says those tips range from potential areas of interest to a sighting of the jetta. others advise police to search the downtown area and any closed homes in morgan hill. on monday night a free fitness fundraiser being held for sierra lamar. it begins at 6:00 and runs until 7:15 p.m. at fitness zone west in the marina. this is located on del monte boulevard. all proceeds benefit the effort to find sierra. a man who initially survived a run-in with a train on the peninsula this morning has now died. caltrain officials say the last train of the day southbound

train 198 hit the man at bays wonder avenue in burlingame around 12:30 a.m. the man was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. about 500 people were on the train. the track was reopened shortly before 2:00 a.m. an attorney has been arrested for the hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist in dublin. police say 32-year-old spencer freeman smith of san ramon hit the cyclist on tuesday night. investigators found parts of his new mercedes at the crash site on dougherty road. they used i.d. numbers found on those carports to trace them to smith's car. police say they found the damaged mercedes in smith's garage in san ramon and then towed it away. neighbors say they are shocked. >> i don't believe that that man ran over somebody and kept going and that person is dead. >> smith, a father of two, was booked on charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run involving death or injury. he has been released on bail.

the victim, 57-year-old bow hoo had been visiting the area from china. a woman and two dogs are dead after a car crash in sonoma county. the car was discovered along the lakeville highway outside petaluma shortly before 4:00 p.m. yesterday. officials say the vehicle had apparently been underwater for hours before anyone noticed it. a 60-year-old woman inside was pronounced dead at the scene. the highway patrol is still trying to figure out how that accident happened. well, it was a short trip for a new private rocket that failed to leave the launch pad. >> three, two, one, zero, and lift-off. we've had a cutoff. >> during this morning's countdown, the launch of the spacex falcon nine rocket was stopped by onboard computers. an engine problem is suspected and another attempt will be made on tuesday. this was the first launch attempt by one of the private u.s. companies hoping to take over the job of delivering

prescott national forest. it forced another community to leave yesterday. evacuees have been watching that fire from a general store and waiting for updates. four of their homes have already been lost. arizona, colorado, fire season definitely here in the western half of the united states. although rosemary, no red flag warnings for us in northern california at least today. >> yeah, we don't have the offshore winds but as we all know, we had a very dry winter, so we of course will be tracking that. for today we've got just some nice weather in store. we are going to be right about average, a few of us a bit above but in any case it's going to be warm but not painfully hot. we are talking low to mid-80s for the inland areas and along the coast partly cloudy skies and holding onto those 60s for the afternoon. giving you a live look here, the inland east bay, mostly sunny skies, we do have a bit of fog hugged up against the coastline but partly sunny skies is what we've seen in the last half hour or so and it is going to break apart bringing us mostly clear skies for today. beta breakers for tomorrow. if you are going to watch or maybe participate, partly cloudy skies, low 50s at the

a building on oakland's broadway auto row goes up in flames overnight and more than just fire damage was found inside. welcome back to mornings on 2.

i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. earlier this morning firefighters discovered evidence of a marijuana grow operation inside that building. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in oakland for us this morning where firefighters are still on the scene. allie. >> reporter: that's right, mike, you can see the ladder trucks still out here. there's two of them with their water cannons positioned over the top of the building. they are still working on putting out some of these hot spots and since we have been here for four hours now, they have been out here trying to work on getting the last of this fire out and under control. now, the fire started just after 4:00 this morning and this warehouse you're looking at on oakland's auto row. the first crews on the scene reported seeing flames shooting from the roof of this building stretching up 15 to 20 feet high. when firefighters went into the back of the building, this is what they found, evidence of a marijuana grow operation. first they found the flames, then they got through the back of the building and they could see what we saw, about a dozen pot plants in the back of this warehouse untouched by the fire. the grow lights and the fans

positioned over those plants were also still intact and not damaged by any of this. no one was inside the building when this fire started so no one was hurt, no firefighters were injured putting this out or still working on putting this out and the flames didn't spread to any businesses or homes nearby. but because the building is 100 years ago -- years old there were concerns about the structural stability, it's made entirely of brick which is prone to collapse in these sort of large fires and because of what was found inside firefighters did have safety concerns. >> the building is an old masonry building and it's connected to a building in the rear so it quickly spread to the building in the rear. with the growing facility, sometimes they set up booby traps and such so we were concerned about that. >> reporter: now, later this morning once those hot spots are entirely out and firefighters believe it's going to take them a while to reach that point, fire investigators will be out here to determine the cause of the fire, although at this point they believe the fire began in the back of the warehouse where those pot plants were. oakland police are also going

to start their own investigation into this suspected marijuana grow operation here and back out here live just in the last 20 minutes, we have seen police and firefighters open up part of broadway. again, this building where the fire happened is on broadway between 30th and hawthorne so that portion eastbound portion of the streets is still closed but you can see there is traffic moving along heading west on broadway so there is some, although still limited access on broadway. allie rasmus,. a coast guard recovered a female body from the san francisco bay. it was reported by fishermen this morning off point diablo. the coast guard has no information on the identity of that body. oakland police are asking the public's help in finding a man accused of threatening officers. police pulled a car over for a traffic stop last week. they say one of the passengers then bolted from the vehicle. they say he was carrying a gun and that's when an officer shot at him. although he was wounded, he

still managed to run away. a s.w.a.t. team was called in and fired flash bang grenades at a home where he was believed to be hiding out but they never found him. a series of shootings in richmond led to an increase in police patrols. yesterday a ktvu photographer rode along with two officers. they say there's a feud going on between two gangs, one from central richmond and the other from north richmond. >> i don't want gang members from north richmond to come down here, drive by and shoot them up and have them shoot back and cause chaos for everybody. >> richmond police say they are using a new program that targets gang members and directs them to jobs and social programs. they say overall violent crimes in the city is down over the past two years. the $5000 reward is being offered for information about a sexual assault in oakland. police say it happened around 1:30 yesterday afternoon on holly street near 90th avenue. officers say a man forced a woman to the ground, sexually assaulted her and then ran off.

the suspect is described as an african-american male in his 30s, 5'9", 160 pounds with a mustache. anyone with information should call the number there on your screen. a judge has given the green light to dig up a long lost south bay cemetery. construction workers at valley medical center in san jose stopped the hammers after recently discovering part of a 19th century cemetery estimated to have 1400 pine coffins. yesterday a superior court judge signed a court order allowing county officials to remove as many remains as necessary to complete that construction project. >> the first thing we have to do is identify an appropriate professional to oversee the removal process. it's really important to us that it be done in a respectful and dignified manner. >> the county says a forensic anthropologist could be hired to lead the recovery. a start date has not been set. sacramento area seat community hopes a larger reward will help track down a killer. it was exactly a year ago when

someone shot and killed ball pier sing damee at his elk grove home. the couple was part of a community that has raised the reward from 25,000 to 35,000. police believe the couple was targeted but say it was not a hate crime. a group of local students are defying the odds of getting into college from their inner- city neighborhoods. want to show you the class of 2012 graduations on -- for college tracked national program in major cities. the program strives to keep high school students on track in the face of adversity. this 18-year-old oakland student became emotional when telling us about her parents' struggle. they immigrated from china. her mom works as a housekeeper, her dad is a cook. now she is headed for harvard. >> that's a dream, that's what my parents came here to offer me an educational opportunity. >> college tracks says 90% of

its students are accepted into a four-year college or university. the state's budget deficit could be even higher than the latest estimate. governor jerry brown first put the deficit at $9 billion at the beginning of the year, then last week he went online and estimated the deficit had ballooned to $16 billion. but now the state's legislative analysts projects california could be in a $17 billion hole. however, both the analysts and the governor expect the state's economy to improve by the end of the year, perhaps an indication is california's unemployment rate. it dipped to 10.9% last month. that was down just a bit from 11% in march. according to new data, the state added about 20,000 jobs in april. however, california remains well above the national unemployment rate of 8.1%. the golden state has the third highest unemployment rate in the u.s. trailing only nevada and rhode island. right here in the bay area, the jobless numbers vary from county to county. take a look at the map right leer on the screen.

marin county has the lowest rate at 6.4%. counties with the highest rates, solano at 10.2%, contra costa at 9.1 and alameda at 8.9%. uncle sam is helping out young people looking for a summer job. the federal government is announcing 20,000 new youth jobs. they involve building trails, clearing brush and cleaning up waterways in national parks, wildlife refuges and other public lands. the $4 million program involves 20 outdoor projects across the country. final preparations are underway for a well known san francisco tradition. tomorrow 40,000 people are registered to run the baita breakers -- beta breakers. people living along that race route also started complaining about the giant floats and intoxicated runners. >> kind of took it too far until it, you know, instead of being silly and cookie, it

into the desert. mary kennedy will be laid to rest in bedford new york today. the estranged wife of robert kennedy, jr. committed suicide wednesday after battling alcoholism and depression for years. both the richardson and the kennedy families wanted to handle the funeral arrangements for the 52-year-old architect and environmentalist. yesterday a judge ordered her body to be released to robert kennedy. so far no verdict reached in the trial of former presidential candidate john edwards. the court and jury are set to reconvene on monday. edwards is charged with falsifying documents, taking illegal contributions and conspiracy. in convicted of all charges he faces large fines and up to 30 years in prison. the parents of a 4-year-old boy are in jail after their son brought 14 bags of crack cocaine to school. along with the parents, the child's uncle also arrested. the parents have been charged with child endangerment. the boy's father and uncle are accused of distributing a controlled substance. police were called on the school on wednesday when a teacher noticed a child pulling

baggies of the drug out of his pocket. >> potentially saved that little one's life and maybe saved the lives of others, certainly prevented a medical emergency. >> police say in total the child had more than 14 bags of crack. he told his teacher he had taken them from his daddy's table. a salinas lettuce grower has voluntarily recalled bagged lettuce after routine sampling detected listeria. river ranch fresh foods produced the contaminated packages of shredded iceberg lettuce. the bags were distributed in california and colorado. the packages are sold under different names including farm stand, fresh fresh n easy and market side. the product already pulled from store shelves. no illnesses reported. a new type of mob crowd sweeping the area and businesses are hoping they are the next target. cash mobs play on the idea of flash mobs except instead of

performing, cash mobs head to a local business and start spending money. petaluma's cash mob has about 500 members and so far they have boosted business to a gift shop and a wireless store. >> i see some results after the fact, some people that came and, oh, i heard about the cash mob and they came later and days later so it was pretty nice. >> last night pongo's tie restaurant -- thai restaurant was selected by the cash mob. the osha says he -- owner says he got a lot of new customers last night. the cash mob says they operate under the principle if we each do a little, we all do a lot. san francisco bar hoppers can now use a new app to help them decide where to go. seen tap has installed sensors in participating bars. those sensors determine the age and gender of people going in and coming out. users can check the app to see how crowded that bar is and check the male to female ratio. the app is not popular, though, with everyone. some people say they don't want to be tracked and about 10 bars have already dropped out of the

program. it will be a day full of smiles and tears of joy for some local college students and their families. san francisco state university and st. mary's college will hold their undergraduate commencement ceremonies today. the san francisco state's keynote speaker is going to be mayor ed lee. more than 650 people will graduate from st. mary's and more than 500 will walking a-- walk across the stage today to receive their diplomas. comedian bill cosby has have advice for university of san francisco graduates. >> you will never be nervous because if you are nervous, then you didn't send you. you sent that person who shouldn't be there. >> cosby gave a speech and received an honorary doctorate at yesterday's ceremony. the invitation came one year after cosby surprised usf officials with a phone call praising their tributes. native american symbols, names and images as school

mascots have been outlawed in oregon public schools. the state board of education voted yesterday to adopt the new rule. the ban prohibits depictions or references to an american indian tribe custom or tradition as a mascot, nickname or logo. schools have until the summer of 2017 to comply with the new rule. the second leg of horse racing's triple crown is today. the favorite is bodemeister. all eyes will be on derby winner i'll have another to see if the horse can win the second leg of the triple crown, no horse has won that exclusive title since affirmed in 1978. the third leg of the triple crown the belmont stakes is in three weeks in new york. the 70 day olympic torch relay is now underway. david beckham with a symbolic first torch from a lantern that was carried on a plane from greece. he then lit a large caldron.

for the first time in nearly 20 years a rare solar eclipse will be visible in northern california tomorrow evening. this is video of a similar one seen over easter island two years ago. it's an eclipse where the moon completely blocks out the sun except for a ring of fire around the moon's edge. >> from bay area, though, you'll still get quite a show. you will ea crescent -- a crescent. the crescent will appear to rotate as the moon continues on the top half of the sun. >> the space and science center recommends that you do not look directly at the sun. the eclipse is expected to begin around 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. it will be quite a show. 8:55. we have gorgeous weather if you're headed out the door this morning. rosemary watching it all for us and keeping it nice and toasty in some spots, right? >> yes, nice and warm inland, maybe a pool party along the coastline bring along the hoody. 60s in the forecast this

before the changes take place. we will take a look at what you can expect for your area coming up. a warehouse fire in oakland is now the center of a criminal investigation after marijuana plants found in the building. the fire began around 4:00 this morning along broadway's auto row and ktvu's allie rasmus just spoke to firefighters and has new information about the number of plants that may have been inside that building. allie. >> reporter: i spoke to some of the firefighters who had a chance to go inside this burning building and they tell me that they estimate at least a couple hundred marijuana plants were found inside this warehouse and they believe that in that suspected marijuana grow operation somewhere around there is where this fire started just after 4:00 this morning. we are going to show you the plants that we could see from the streets but first i want to show you what the progress that is happening here right now. firefighters still have their water cannons over and the video you're looking at right now is just after 4:00 this morning when this was a 3-alarm fire. the flames according to some of the people out here stretched

15 to 20 feet high. when firefighters went into the back of the building, that is when they found evidence of that marijuana grow operation. we could see about a dozen pot plants in the back untouched by the fire. the grow lights and the fans positioned over those plants were also still intact. no one was inside the building so no one was hurt and no firefighters were injured and the flames did not spread to any of the businesses and homes nearby. we talked to one of the persons who works at a business next door to this warehouse. he says he hardly ever saw anyone coming in and out of that warehouse and it didn't really seem, he says, like a legitimate business. >> we seen them maybe twice in a month, maybe once and they are like 75, 85 years old. >> reporter: those are the only people who came in and out? >> yes. that's the only people i've ever seen inside there. >> reporter: now, later this morning fire investigators will be here to determine the cause of the fire. oakland police, we are told, have also already started their investigation into this suspected marijuana grow operation. in fact, they are on the other

side of the warehouse, the backs of buildings where this all started. i want to show you what firefighters are doing right now. they still have their ladder trucks out here, two of them. they still have their water cannons positioned over this building and that's because for the last 4 1/2 hours since this fire started while the flames are gone, they are still working on putting out some of the hot spots. in the meantime, though, we are on broadway, this is broadway and 30th and part of the street is still closed off, broadway between 30th and hawthorne is partially closed to traffic but it is still open and cars are still going by us in the westbound direction here on broadway. live in oakland, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a house and car damaged after a tree came down onto powerlines in oakland around midnight firefighters were called to the corner of 61st street and colby. when they arrived, they saw a tree down on some powerlines and those lines had burned the side of a house. the tree also landed on a car parked on the street. the car's owner says the size of the trees in the neighborhood is an ongoing problem. >> the neighborhood had been

complaining about trees being messed up and about to break and nobody is coming out here to fix them, trimming them back or nothing. no maintenance on these trees at all and now it fell on my car. >> the trees were cut back once pg&e had turned off power to those lines. no major outages were reported and no one was injured. we are now hearing from the company whose private rocket failed to launch early this morning. >> three, two, one, zero, and lift-off. we've had a cutoff. >> well, during the countdown, as you just heard, onboard computers stopped this morning's launch of the spacex falcon 9 rocket. an engine problem is suspected and another attempt will be made on tuesday. the president of the southern california company is defending this morning's events. >> this is not a failure. we aborted with purpose, it would be a failure if we were to have lifted off with an engine trending in this direction. >> this was the first launch

attempt by one of the private u.s. companies hoping to take over the job of delivering cargo and eventually astronauts to the space station. a new search is now underway for missing teenager sierra lamar. it has now been more than two months since lamar was last seen by her mother as she was getting ready for school. her bag and cell phone were found near her morgan hill home and police recently impounded a red volkswagen jetta in connection with her disappearance. the santa clara county sheriff's department says it is also receiving tips thanks to coverage from "america's most wanted." investigators say those tips include a sighting of the jetta and suggestions to the search -- to search the downtown area, closed homes in morgan hill and other potential areas of interest. a man who initially survived a run-in with a train on the peninsula early this morning has died. caltrain officials say southbound train 198 hit the man at base water avenue in burlingame around 12:30 a.m. the man was taken to the hospital where he was later

pronounced dead. about 500 people were on that train. the track was reopened shortly before 2:00 a.m. an attorney has been arrested for the hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist in dublin last week. police say 32-year-old spencer freeman smith hit the man sunday night. investigators found parts of his mercedes at the cash site on dougherty road. they used i.d. numbers found on those parts to trace them to smith's car. police said they found the damaged mercedes in smith's garage in san ramon and towed it away. neighbors say they were shocked. >> i don't believe that that man ran over somebody and kept going and that person is dead. >> smith, a father of two, was booked on charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run involving death or injury. he has been released on bail. the victim, 57-year-old bo hoo had been visiting the area from china. the oakland police district the focus of a federal grand jury investigation. the grand jury is looking at

two incidents including the fatal shooting of 20-year-old raheem brown by a school police sergeant. brown was alleging trying to stab another officer with a screwdriver when he was shot. the grand jury also examining accusations that the school's police chief made racist remarks after a golf tournament. the nato summit begins tomorrow in chicago. this morning three people will be in court to face terrorism conspiracy charges. coming up in a live report at 9:15, what they are accused of planning and how chicago is preparing for the summit. facebook's first day as a public company did not impress many of those on wall street. facebook priced its initial public offering at $38 a share. it ended just 23 cents higher, far less than what some economists had predicted. and while the average investor didn't get rich many facebook employees did become millionaires. one real estate agent was handing out fliers outside of facebook's menlo park headquarters hoping new employees are are going to try to buy homes with their new found fortune. >> first time i've been with an

. this morning, president obama addressed the news media about the g-8 summitt at camp david. >> our hope is that we can resolve this issue in a peaceful fashion, that respects iran's sovereignty and its rights in the international community, but also recognizes its responsibilities. >> the president says those attending the summitt are unified against iran's nuclear buildup, as well as syria's deadly crackdown on its citizens. even though it is called the g-8 summitt, if you look carefully, there are 10 people seated at the round table. they are leaders of eight major industrial nations, such as japan and england, along with the president of the european commission and the european council president. so far, there are no problems with protesters at the g-8 summitt. local, state and federal law enforcement are preventing demonstrators are getting anywhere close. small groups of mass protesters have assembled in a nearby city in western maryland. >> i'm kind of against the idea

that all 7 billion of us on this planet are being represented by economic decisions made by eight people. >> i especially do not give interviews to news. >> protests range from the global economy to food safety. frustrated business owners say the demonstrators are keeping customers away this weekend. protesters are vowing to be out in full force at the nato summitt beginning tomorrow. reporter steve brown is live now in chicago, where there's a court hearing today for three protesters arrested on terrorism charges. steve? >> reporter: -- a bond hearing coming at the top of the hour here locally for three men accused with conspiracy/terrorism charges, if you will. and these men were originally arrested on wednesday night. we have video to show you, called the bridgeport neighborhood on the south side of chicago. we were there just yesterday, this is friday, keep in mind the arrests were made wednesday, a lot of police milling about,

talking to neighbors, and an awful lot of fire personnel. they told us there was report of a gas leak. but the response seemed a bit disproportionate for a gas leak. in this neighborhood, three men arrested -- or nine people arrested, including these three, 20-year-old brian church, 24-year-old jared chase, and 24-year-old brent betterly. they have been charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism and possession of an explosive or incendiary device. of the other six people arrested in that same raid, if you will on wednesday night, was one gentleman who described his handling by police. >> they did not speak to us for 18 hours. they did not let us know what was happening. they did not know what was happening next. i was not interviewed. i was not interrogated. i was not talked to. >> the entire time? >> the entire time. >> reporter: now, attorneys for the national lawyer's guild have been representing these folks, questioning strongly whether or not there has been civil rights violations with these arrests, whether or not there was proper

warrant, proper paperwork done, whether rights were read to these folks when asking open questions about why it is they were detained a full 48 hours that police are permitted to hold someone without charging. charges came at the very end of that 48-hour period. during the bond hearing, hoping to hear more specifics about why it is these folks were charged with these kinds of crimes. we did do a background check, checked their criminal history. they all have criminal history, but nothing that suggests violence. we hope to hear a little bit more about the details of the arrest and police are talking to media immediately afterwards, a little later today. back to you in oakland. >> thanks. that was steve brown reporting for us from chicago. in italy, a student was killed at an explosion at a vocational high school. the girl, said to be 16 years old, died this morning after a bomb placed in a trash can blew up. seven or students were injured. the school is named after a murdered antimafia prosecutor who was killed in a mafia bomb blast 20 years ago this weekend.

it's not clear yet if organized crime is connected to this morning's attack. a blind chinese activist who caused a diplomatic crisis between the u.s. and china is now on his way to the united states. chen gong chung is on a flight to new jersey with his wife and two children. cheng caused an uproar last month, when he escaped from his house and hid at the u.s. embassy. the activists plans to study law at new york university. an airline pilot is accused of flying with a loaded gun. federal prosecutors say a bag screener in buffalo saw the gun yesterday and pilot brett dieter was arrested before he could fly a piedmont airlines flight to laguardia. investigators say they think he piloted seven flights with the gun since wednesday, when he flew from virginia to new york without having his bag x-rayed. five people were taken to the hospital after smelling fumes at fort lauderdale's

international airport. the gas-like smell was detected yesterday afternoon near one of the security check points. about a thousand people also had to be evacuated from the terminal, including miami dolphins runningback reggie bush. firefighters don't know where the smell came from, but say it could have been anything from gasoline to pepper spray to aerosol. >> we don't know what the substance is, whether it came from somebody's bag or whatever. if in fact it did. >> firefighters were brought in to vent the area. people were allowed back into the building about two hours later. in the race pot white house, former republican presidential candidate newt gingrich is asking his home state to vote out president obama. >> used to be a country where you paid off your mortgage and left your kids the farm. it has become a country where the politicians sell the farm and leave the kids the mortgage. that's fundamentally immoral and wrong. >> last night, gingrich spoke at the georgia republican convention. he told the grad mitt romney

will pick conservative u.s. supreme court justices rather than radical judges. new campaign finance reports give obama an edge over obama. the president has $115 million in cash on hand. romney has 61 million, but analysts expect the difference to shrink in the future and that's because romney is expected to get more contributions now that he has a virtual lock on the gop nomination. he also has the support of well-financed superpacs. the president released his long form birth certificate months ago, but that's not enough for some people in arizona where there's now a ballot controversy. arizona's secretary of state, ken bennett, is requesting that hawaii's secretary of state confirm the president was born in hawaii. if he does not get an answer, bennett says the president may not be on the arizona ballot. this all started with a charge by controversial sheriff in arizona, joe arpaio. >> when sheriff arpaio's posse

released a press conference a few weeks ago, month ago, that the birth certificate posted on the white house website might be fraudulent, i started getting, as you might imagine, literally over 1200 e-mails. >> hawaii's attorney general says if bennett wants confirmation, he'll have to prove he legitimately needs it. hawaii has confirmed multiple times that obama was indeed born there. in his weekly address, the president is touting reforms to wall street. >> for the past three and a half years, we've been fighting our way back from historic economic crisis, one caused by breathtaking irresponsibility on the part of some on wall street, who treated our financial system like a casino. >> president obama says jpmorgan chase's $2 billion trading loss is another example of wall street making risky bets and mismanaging money. mr. obama says he worries that congress will undermine new rules that force big banks to hold more cash on hand, so if

they make a bad decision, they pay for the mistake instead of taxpayers. two large wildfires continue to grow in arizona, as well as colorado. and officials now know how one of them was started. what a camper may now have to do to cover the costs of fighting the 8000-acre fire.

all morning long. firefighters say a couple hundred marijuana plants were found at the back of a building. they say it appears there was a growing operation in the building, but have not confirmed this is what started the fire. the flames were first reported just after 4:00 this morning along broadway's auto row. coming up at 9:45, we are going to go back live to the scene for more on the ongoing investigation. police say a man was stabbed in the head early this morning in east palo alto. it happened on week street around 2:15. investigators say two suspects came up to the 39-year-old victim while he was sitting in his car. they demanded money. when the victim refused, he was stabbed. medics believe he will survive. you can call east palo alto police if you have any information about this investigation. oakland police are asking for the public's help in finding a suspect accused of threatening officers. police pulled the car over for a traffic stop 10 days ago. they say one of the passengers then bolted from the vehicle. they say he was carrying a gun.

that is when an officer shot him. although he was wounded, he still managed to run away. a s.w.a.t. team was called in and fired flash grenades at a home where he was believed to be hiding out, but they never found him. just over an hour ago, the coastguard told us they recovered a female body near the golden gate bridge. the body was first reported by fishermen this morning off of point diablo. the coastguard is now working to identify the body. well, police in richmond are stepping up patrols after a series of shootings. yesterday, a ktvu photographer rode along with two officers. the officers say there's a feud going on between two gangs, one from central richmond, the other from north richmond. >> they don't want gang members from north richmond to come down here, drive by and shoot them up and have them shoot back and cause chaos for everybody else not involved, who are just trying to live their lives. >> richmond police are using a new program that directs gang members to jobs and social programs. they say, overall violent crimes

in the city are down over the past two years. a $5000 reward is now being offered for information about a sexual assault in oakland. police say it happened on may 1st at 1:30 in the afternoon on holly street near 90th avenue. officers say a man forced a woman to the ground, sexually assaulted her, then ran off. the suspect is described as an african american man in his thirties, 5' 9, 160 pounds, with a mustache. anyone with information is asked to call the police department at the number there on your screen. the sacramento area sikh community hopes a larger reward will help track down a killer. it was exactly one year ago that someone shot and killed this man at his home in oak grove. his wife was also shot, but she survived. the couple is part of the sikh community, which has raised the reward from $25,000 to $35,000. police believe the couple was targeted, but say it was not a hate crime. a judge has given the green light to dig up a long lost

south bay cemetery. construction workers in san jose stopped the hammers after recently discovering the part of the 19th century cemetery, estimated to have 1400 pine coffins. yesterday, a superior court judge signed a court order allowing county officials to remove as many remains necessary to complete the construction project. >> the first thing we have to do is identify an appropriate professional to oversee the removal process. it's really important to us that it be done in a respectful and dignified manner. >> the county says forensic anthropologist could be hired to lead the recovery. a start date has not been set. a salinas lettuce grower has voluntarily recalled bagged salads after routine sampling discovered listeria. river ranch produced the contaminated packages of shredded iceberg lettuce, distributed in california and colorado. the packages are sold under farm stand, fresh & easy and

marketside. the lettuce has already been pulled from store shelves. no illnesses have been reported. the state's budget deficit could be even higher than the latest estimate. governor jerry brown first put the deficit at $9 billion at the beginning of the year. then last week, he went online and estimated the deficit had ballooned to $16 billion. but now, the state's legislative analyst projects california could be in a $17 billion hole. however, both the analysts and the governor expect the state's economy to improve by the end of the year. perhaps an indication is california's unemployment rate. it dipped to 10.9% last month. that was down just a bit from 11% in march. according to new data, the state added about 20,000 jobs in april. however, california remains well above the national unemployment rate of 8.1%. golden state has the third highest unemployment rate in the u.s., trailing only nevada and rhode island. right here in the bay area, the jobless numbers vary from

county to county. take a look at the map on your screen. marijn county has the lowest rate at 6.4%. counties with the highest rates, solano, contra costa, andal media at 8.9%. uncle sam is helping out young people looking for a summer job. the federal government is announcing 20,000 new youth jobs. they involve building trails, clearing brush, and cleaning up waterways and national parks. wildlife refugees and other public lands. it is a $4 million program and it involves 20 outdoor projects across the country. the old fort ord begins a new chapter this morning, as a national monument. it's now called fort ord national monument. a dedication ceremony is set for 10:00 a.m. this morning. soldiers trained at the former u.s. army post from 1917 to 1991. there's a new type of mob

crowd sweeping the bay area, and businesses are hoping that they are the next target. cash mobs play on the idea of flash mobs, where a group of people suddenly start singing and dancing. except, instead of performing, cash mobs head to a local business and start spending money. petaluma's cash mob has been 500 members, and they have boosted business to a gift shop and a wireless store. >> i see some results after the fact. some people that came and, oh, i heard about the cash mob and they came later, days later, so it was pretty nice. >> last night, pong go's thai restaurant was selected by the cash mob and the owner says he did get a lot of new customers last night and is hoping more continue to come. the cash mob says they operate under the principle, if they each do a little, we all do a lot. this afternoon, the bay bridge series, game 2. a's fans attended last night's game at at&t ball park. no one knows for sure if the a's will say in oakland, move to the south bay, or perhaps leave the

bay entirely. baseball commissioner bud selig says it's up to the a's owners if they want to consider relocating the team outside of northern california. >> lot of history in oakland. it can happen nowhere else. hey, i mean, they got a nice stadium here, but they don't got the history like we have in oakland. >> obviously, people talk about the organization you play for. you definitely keep your ears open a little bit, but it's something that's an ongoing thing and you can't really control it! , so you just got to go out and play. >> oakland mayor jean quan e-mailed us. the east bay loves the oakland a's. we hope the ownership of the a's will jointly us at the table to discuss all of the options, end quote. she hopes a renovation project will keep the a's, raiders and warriors at the coliseum and oracle arena next door. a's fans left the ball park last night a bit disappointed, after the loss. brandon bell and brandon crawford had key base hits in the game. the a's were actually down 8-1 at one point, but battled back, falling a bit short.

game 2 of the three-game set starts at 1:05. we are just one day away from a well-known san francisco tradition. tomorrow, 40,000 people are registered to run the bay to breakers, an event that two years ago almost became extinct after the 2010 race sent 26 people to the hospital. people living along the race route also started complaining about the giant floats and intoxicated runners. >> kind of took it too far, until it, instead of being silly and kookie, it wound up being an ugly frat party. >> now, new rules are in effect, including no open containers, no floats, no alcohol on the race course, and everyone does have to be registered. to help keep everyone in line, private security has been hired and 360 city police officers are going to be stationed along the route. ktvu.com has more details about tomorrow's bay to breakers, including the race route. just look for the weekend extra tab. sylvan george is the man to beat as the tour of california

enters stage 7. today's 78-mile race will begin at 11:00 in ontario, 35 miles east of los angeles. the cyclists will ride the twisting mountain roads above glenn dora. the tail end of the race will force them up 15 switch backs to the finish on mount baldy. the tour ends tomorrow in los angeles. volunteers are going to be making a human golden gate bridge this morning in celebration of the real bridge's 75th anniversary. they plan on wearing orange or clothing similar to the bridge's coloring and form the shape of the bridge and the number 75 for an aerial photograph. the volunteers are going to be meeting at kristy field. they started meeting about 40 minutes ago to get ready for the big shot. . good morning to you. we are soaking up the sunshine around most of the bay area this morning. giving you a live look at the bay, city there in the backdrop, a little bit of a haze out there. but it's more like a mist and not really linked to anything

what officials will do to keep the environmental impact to a minimum. nearly 6 hours after a fire started in this oakland warehouse, firefighters are still putting out hot spots. coming up, we'll tell you what firefighters found in the back of this building and why there is a police investigation now under way here. but first, let's take you outside. there is 880 in oakland. chp is working a crash that was blocking two lanes at the top of the hour. as you can see, southbound direction moving northbound a little bit slow, so if you're headed out there, might see it a little more crowded than you're used to on a saturday morning. it is 9:45. you're watching mornings on 2.

gorgeous weekend in store. . well, time now, 9:45. let's recap our top stories this morning. a southern california company says they had to abort an early morning launch because of engine problems. they are one of the private u.s. companies hoping to take over the job of delivering cargo and eventually astronauts to the space station. in his weekly address, president obama says he's concerned congressional republicans might undermine new wall street reforms. he says big banks are making risky investments, potentially forcing taxpayers to offset the losses, which would set back an economic recovery. an early morning warehouse fire is now at the center of a criminal investigation. after marijuana plants were found inside. the flames were first reported just after 4:00 on broadway's auto row, and ktvu's allie rasmus is there with more on the numbers of plants found and the investigation set to begin today. >> reporter: claudine, i had a chance to talk to some of the firefighters who went into this burning building and they estimated when they went inside, they saw at least a couple

hundred marijuana plants all across the warehouse floor. this is where the fire happened, at this building warehouse on auto row here in oakland. you can see right now, firefighters still have their ladder trucks out, still pouring water on some of the hot spots. they have been working this fire since 4:00 this morning. now, the first crew to arrive on the scene just after 4:00 a.m. reported seeing flames coming from the roof. they sent about 15 to 20 feet into the air. when firefighters went to the back of the building, they found evidence of a marijuana grow operation. what we could see from the street was about a dozen pot plants, untouched by the fire. the grow lights and fans positioned over those plants were also still intact. again, firefighters who went into the building say there was a couple hundred plants like this inside. no one was inside the building. no firefighters were hurt. and flames luckily didn't spread to any other businesses and homes. we had a chance to talk to some of the people who worked at the businesses next door to this warehouse. one guy says he hardly ever saw

anyone come in and out of the warehouse and says it didn't really seem like a legitimate business. >> we have seen them maybe once or twice in a month, like 75, 80 years old. he came and asked me boss to move his truck one time and those are the only people i've ever seen. >> reporter: later this morning, once the hot spots are completely out, fire investigators will be here to determine the cause of the fire. although at this point, it appears the fire did begin near that grow operation in the back of the warehouse. oakland police have also already been out here, started their investigation into that suspected marijuana grow operation, and just in the last hour or so, couple of hours, we've seen broadway open up. it was closed off to traffic, as police were doing their work here. now you can see traffic is moving on broadway in the westbound direction. however, in the eastbound direction, broadway between 30th and hawthorn is closed off, because as you can see here, firefighters are still working this fire. they are still trying to put out some of the morning. live in oakland, allie rasmus,

ktvu channel 2news. the italian american group responsible for removing the capsized costa concordia out of the water have announced the ship will be refloated and towed to an italian port, all in one piece. that plan is designed to keep the environmental impact to a minimum. the costa concordia ran aground near tuscany in january. 32 people were killed, including two americans. salvage teams hope to have the ship out of the water early next year. mary richardson-kennedy will be laid to rest in bedford, new york today. the estranged wife of robert kennedy, jr. committed suicide wednesday, after battling alcoholism and depression for years. both the richardson and the kennedy families wanted to handle the funeral arrangements for the 52-year-old architect and environmentalist. yesterday, a judge ordered her body to be released to robert kennedy, jr. the jury in the trial of former presidential candidate john edwards is home for the weekend after failing to reach a verdict. the court and the jury are set

to reconvene on monday. edwards is charged with falsifying documents, taking illegal contributions, and conspiracy. if convicted of all charges, he faces large fines and up to 30 years in prison. well, it will be a day full of smiles for some bay area college students and their families. san francisco state university and st. mary's college will hold their undergraduate commencement ceremonies today. san francisco state's keynote speaker will be mayor ed lee. lee. comedian bill cosby is sharing his knowledge of the working world with university of san francisco graduates. >> yeah, you can be a little nervous, but not where you throw out who you are! you show up. every time. don't send that part of you that is terrible.
