be careful with the road workers. northbound and southbound 101 san francisco that traffic looks good getting up to the 80 split. let's go back to claudine. this morning as her suspected killer sits in jail another search for a missing teenager sierra lamar is about to get under way. alex savidge joins us live from morgan hill with more on the plans for this mornings search. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, to you. there will be a somber tone as today's volunteer search effort gets under way. it will start a few hours from now at 8:00 this morning. everyone gathering at burnett elementary school. organizers expecting a good turnout. there was a feeling of sadness as volunteers came together after hearing a suspect has been charged with the kidnapping and murder of sierra lamar. the 15-year-old last seen on march 16th getting ready to leave for school and since then hundreds of people have taken part in this search effort organized by the class kids

foundation. volunteers are now more determined than ever to find sierra. >> i believe then that we have to find her and we have to end the ambiguity for the family. they can't be left out there not knowing what happened to their child. >> reporter: and yesterday the santa clara county sheriffs dive team was back out searching the reservoir. her son went fishing there. and in the mean after the volunteer search wraps up today in morgan hill community members will be holding a remembrance vigil. another volunteer search gets

started today. we're live this morning in morgan hill alex savidge. the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar is scheduled to make his first court appearance tomorrow. investigators say 21-year-old tower rose did not know the morgan hill teenager and called the case a purely random crime. dna evidence from sierra's discarded clothing. the suspects mother said she got an emotional phone call from her son shortly after his arrest. >> if i see you down, who will take care of my kids? i need you to take care of emily. be behind emily and worry about her and the baby. >> her mother told us she believes her son is innocent but at the same time she said quote i'm not his shadow. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage. we'll bring you the latest as it happens. overnight a truck smashed into an apartment building and

now police are look for the driver. it happened on sunset avenue around 11:30 last night. six people were inside that apartment building at the time including three children. the truck crashed into a bedroom where people were sleeping. fortunately no one was hurt. >> red cross is here assisting them with relocating for the night. we are boarding up the unite to secure their belongings. the driver of the truck took off after the crash. that incident started yesterday afternoon when police went to investigate reports of a young girl crying inside a car on baitman and webster streets. when the officer approached the car the driver accelerated and struck him. the officer was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. as for the suspect police tried to chase him down but they lost him.

oakland city leaders gathered to vote on banning so-called tools of violence during protests. that vote never took place. our ktvu camera was there when dozens of occupy protestors headed down the steps of city hall. moments earlier police cleared the chamber citing the emotional meeting was getting out of hand. several expressed their outrage to crack down on the use of shields and other demonstrations. >> i usually carry one. i will continue to carry one and there is nothing you can do to stop me. >> oakland city leaders say the protestors often used shields and other objects to attack police officers. the council will take up the issue again during its next meeting. dozens of newborns possibly exposed to tuberculosis. coming up at 4:45 what public health officials are asking parents to do to avoid possibly spreading that disease.

hewlett pack pa card will announce they are cutting positions. the company has struggled with competition. one report says employee efficiency is at the lowest point in a decade. regulators are looking into who received information about morgan stanley's downgrade of financial report and when they received it. the investigation centers on whether they informed only some clients on the negative report before facebook stock started trading last friday. the bank which was the major under writer for facebook's ipo said it complied with all regulations. facebook suppers through another trading day losing nearly 9% of its value. the stock closed at $31 a share

>> the president will stay tonight in san jose and then tomorrow he will attend the asian pacific fundraiser. this morning secret service director mark sullivan will make his first public remarks at the prostitution scandal in columbia. the scandal in advance of president obama's arrival in columbia did not result in a breach of national security. he says the agents had not yet received any specific information about president obama's visit at the time of the misconduct. san francisco muni is encouraging riders to consider alternatives. beginning at 7:00 p.m. friday, the n-judah and j church lines will be closed for a partial renovation project. muni is encouraging people to get around on bicycle or by

foot. all right your time is 4:38. it's still early. let's head over to sal castaneda to check on the roads for you. hey sal. >> good morning, claudine. we will start in contra costa county. highway 4 eastbound we have a road closure. the traffic will be a little slow as you come up on the closure. the detour will lead you off the city street. not a lot of traffic in this area but you should know about it. we are not seeing anything in the two lane traffic through antioch. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that looks good getting through san francisco. good visibility i noticed that when we were driving in. just a lot of visibility well a lot of visibility not a lot of clouds and fog. steve is so elegant with his words when it comes to weather. and this is northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. this traffic moves well into

the valley. your job in the valley if you want to get there early the roadways are wide open. 4:39 let's go to steve. >> i know exactly what you meant. visibility is much, much better. just patchy low clouds. temperatures far enough inland showing a few low 80s and generally around 70s. it will be mostly sunny here fast. still a breeze in place. it's a west or southwest wind. 50s on the temps. i expect these to come down a little bit. there is drier air in place. i will tell you high pressure will give us lots of sunshine. we are waiting for that system to drop down. it won't be until friday. it will crank up the wind and maybe, maybe give a lot of cold air to the mountains. for us its will be a much cooler pattern. today sunny and breezy. about the same as temperatures. it's kind of a push.

skies are mostly clear. there is patchy fog. after that gives away it will be sunny and breezy today. 60s and 70s closer to the coast and bay. >> high winds are a big concern for wild fires. that fire started yesterday afternoon in the topaz ranch estates. at least two homes and 17 outbuildings have already been destroyed. residents are being encouraged to leave their homes but evacuations are not mandatory. investigators suspect the fire may have sparked from a control

burn. nearly three dozen babies may have been exposed to tuberculosis. it happened at the north bay center in fairfield and in sacramento. public health officials say in march and april a person with active tb spent time in the hospital. 15 babies were in the unit at the time. as a precaution the participants have been notified. >> we are urging those parents to take their baby to the doctor before the end of the week to be evaluated. and if necessary started on medication. >> health officials say the person with active tb also spent time in the neo natal unit.

he ran after the victim struck him on the face. a $5,000 reward is being offered in the case. last night the city council voted to put the proposed measure on the november ballot. if passed it would increase minimum wage to $10. the city council could have adopted the ordnance last night saving an estimated $824,000 in election costs. but they say more time is needed for residents and business owners to study the proposed ordnance. city of oakland believes there is still time to keep the warriors in the east bay. city leaders question whether the team can clear all the regulatory hurdles to build a basketball arena along a san francisco waterfront. it would include an arena, retail center, restaurants and

a parking garage. >> our fan base is really 50/50. 50% of the west bay and r50% of the east bay. we are the bay area basketball team and we had to find the best site that serve the majority of our fans. >> the waterfront restoration and restaurant is expected to cost over $1.5 million. that arena is slated to open for the 2017 and the a's season. mitt romney appears to be a wreak away from lock -- a week away from locking up the presidential nomination. romney picked up 75 more delegations yesterday. he has 1,065 delegates. that means she just 79 delegates short. next tuesday's primary in texas with 155 delegates at stake should put romney over the top.

department of fish and game is trying to figure out how a mountain lion ended up in downtown santa monica. authorities tried to

tranquilize the mountain lion but it didn't work. in the effort of public safety they shot and killed the mountain lion. they are trying to investigate how a 61-year-old man in a wheelchair fell off the pier. a woman jumped into the water to save the man. but he slipped under the boat and couldn't reach him. he was take ton the hospital. we don't know his condition this morning. police say the incident appears to be an accident. a pair of would-be robbers that targeted a las vegas casino learned the hard way. they entered the bellagio wearing wigs and sunglasses. one pepper sprayed a dealer while another gathered $115,000 in chips. the security got in and tackled the man. the other man got away. bellton said he was pulled into the scheme after responding to

a craigs list ad. let's head back out to sal for a look at the roads. >> right numb at the bay bridge toll plaza it looks good. there was a stalled van inside the tunnel westbound. if this would have happened a little later we would have seen an immediate impact almost immediately after the toll plaza. but it's so early that this gave cal tran time to get up on the bridge. san francisco the other side of the bridge that looks good. northbound 101 approaching the downtown area looking fine. southbound 101 also looks good. we will hopefully have a much better commute today. the roadways are clear. if you are driving in antioch eastbound 4 there is a closure between love ridge and summersville. you can get off the freeway there and use city streets. not causing a huge backup.
