welcome to wednesday, may 23rd i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. thank you for waking up with us. let's check if with steve paulson. talking a little rain on friday. >> possible. now today we start off mostly sunny. 50s on the lows. there is patchy low clouds around. temperatures very close to yesterday's readings. highs today will be in the 60s and 70s. low clouds almost start to re-- low clouds all start to regroup. here is sal. traffic is moving along pretty well on highway 4. at least here in bay point. we already have slowing in antioch. and this mornings commute will be looking good on 880 in oakland. northbound getting a little crowding. let's go back to the desk. sal, thank you. we have an update for you. the breaking news in eastern contra costa county a fire broke out a couple hours ago in the area of stone road and bethel island road in bethel

island. it started just after 3:00 this morning. one house has burned to the ground. another one is damaged. haven't heard of any injuries at this point. we are expecting to bring you pictures on ktvu in a short while. those details as soon as we get them. in two hours volunteers in morgan hill will begin another search for sierra lamar. organizers say this mornings search is critical in light of monday nights arrest. now we have team coverage for you this morning. ktvu tara moriarty is outside the santa clara county jail but we begin with alex savage at the search center. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, pam. they say their work is not done. investigators believe sierra lamar was killed but her body has not yet been found. volunteers will gather later on this morning for another previously scheduled search effort. it will begin at 8:00 this morning. you can imagine there will be a feeling of sadness as people

scour the fields and hillsides. last seen in march getting ready to leave for school. hundreds of people have taken part in this search effort. some volunteers came by here last night. they comforted one another. they talked about the developments the recent break in this case after learning a suspect has been charged with the kidnapping and murder of sierra lamar. >> it has been a long time. we need to bring sierra home. family needs closure. >> reporter: and santa clara county sheriffs dive team will keep searching the lesser voir. that is because the mother said her son went searching there the daisy era -- the day sierra disappeared. live this morning in morgan

hill alex savidge. time is 6:03. the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar is due to be arraigned if court tomorrow. tara moriarty is here from san jose with new details about what led up to his arrest. >> reporter: antolin garcia torres says he does not nosey era and his family is standing behind him. in speaking with garcia torres' mother she says her son is innocent. she spoke to him by phone at the jail where he is being held without bail. he was held monday night and charged with one count of murder and kidnapping. security is now very tight at the trailer park where he lives with his mother, wife, and one- year-old daughter. the sheriff says the 21-year- old suspect had been under surveillance since march 28th when his dna was founded on

sierra's discarded clothing. his mother said she spoke to her son and said he was worried about his family especially his wife. >> if i go down who is going to take care of my kids? i need you to take care of emily. be behind emily. >> reporter: we have learned that antolin -- either dropped out or expelled. his mother says that he knew he was being watched by law enforcement and noticed a gps device under his red jetta which authorities seized april 7th. sierra's dna was found inside that car and that was the big breakthrough in this case. the reason they waited longer to arrest him they were hoping he would lead them to her body. what part does the death penalty play in all this?

i'll find out from an expert coming up. >> make sure you stay right here with ktvu channel 2 morning news all morning long. we will bring you teen coverage. overnight a truck smashed into an apartment building in santa rosa and now police are looking for the driver. that happened on sunset avenue about 11:30 last night. six people were inside the apartment at the time including three children. the truck crashed right into a bedroom where people were sleeping but fortunately no one was hurt. >> red cross is here assisting them with relocating for the night. we are boarding up the unit to secure their belongings and make sure the structure is secure so engineers can take a further detailed look tomorrow. >> the driver of the truck took off after the crash. investigators say it was a white chevy pickup. berkeley police searching for the driver of a nissan that hit a police officer. this all started yesterday afternoon when police went to investigate reports of a young

girl crying inside of a car. police say when the officer approached the car, the driver suddenly accelerated and hit the police officer. that officer was taken to the hospital with what is described as moderate injuries. as for that suspect, police tried to chase him down but they lost track of him on interstate 580 in oakland. president obama arrives here in the bay area later today for several fundraisers. i will show you video of the president getting off of his helicopter there. about to get on air force one. he will stop first in colorado and then tonight he will be at a $35,000 per person fundraiser at a private home in atherton. then he will be speaking at a rally at the fox theater in redwood city. tickets for that start at $250. >> for us it means redwood city is part of the bigger picture. it's on the map. obama has chosen with the city to be part of his campaign

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:14 is the time. take a look at this. new laundry mat surveillance video shows a father putting his child in a washing machine playing peek a boo. the door locked. it started. the toddler started to spin inside. an employee rushed to cut power to the locker.

the father says he didn't know someone put money in the machine which caused the machine to start automatically. oakland police released a sketch of a man suggestion septembered of sexually assaulting a woman earlier this month. take a look at the sketch. officers say on may 1st the suspect forced the victim to the ground. he ran off after he struck him in the face with a key. a $5,000 reward is being offered in this case. the head of the secret service goes before congress mismorning defending his agent -- congress this morning defending his agency. as ktvu alison burns reports the senators want to know if national security was in jeopardy. >> reporter: dave, the hearing gets under way in an hour and a half. for the first time the secret service director mark sullivan will speak publicly about agents hiring prostitutes and partying ahead of a presidential trip to columbia

last month. sullivan will testify there was no breach of security that agents did snot information or equipment in their rooms that would have compromised the president's security. he will also say the agency has not been able to substantiate the allegations of similar misconduct on another presidential trip to san salvador. he will face a lot of skepticism from senators. at the white house sullivan has plenty of defenders. >> he moved very quickly to have this matter investigated and took action very quickly. as a result of that investigation. >> reporter: eight agents have lost their jobs. four of them are fighting their dismissiles. more on why they say they should not have been let go. alison burns. 6:16. this is day four of jury deliberations in the john

edwards' mistress and money trial. the jury is considering six felony charges against the former presidential candidate. the jury ended its third day of deliberations late yesterday. apparently making little progress in reaching a verdict. john edwards' is accused of slitting money from wealthy donors to hide his mistress and love child during his weight run for the white house. the faa is investigating a deadly sky diving accident at lake tahoe. that happened yet in south lake tahoe. investigators say a 29-year-old sky diver from the lake tahoe area was killed. the u.s. coast guard rescued two other men from the water. all three were experienced sky divers. emery vail police are investigating how a 61-year-old man in a wheelchair fell off the pier. it happened about 6:00 last night. a woman juried into the water to try to save the man but he slipped under a boat and she

couldn't reach him. firefighters were able to rescue him and he was taken to the hospital. we do not know his incident. it appears to be an accident. 6:17. millions of egyptians voting for a president today. this is egypt's first free presidential election. now the two day election ends tomorrow. none of the 13 candidates are expected to win an absolute majority. a run off between the top two finnerrishers will be held next month. the niece of fidel castro is in california. she is the daughter of the current cuban president. she will be speaking about gay rights at the lgbt center at 6:00 tonight. she will be also be talking about gay rights issues over the next couple of days at san francisco general hospital and the latin american study conference.

the sidewalks across the golden gate bridge should be less difficult to cross starting today. the west sidewalk is set to reopen after four months of work to improve the walkway. that has forced all cyclist and pedestrians on to the east sidewalk to share it. the reopening is just in time for the 75th anniversary celebration this weekend. time now just 6:19. sal, how is the east bay? >> we are starting there dave and pam. i hope you're having a good morning on 80 if this is your commute. this looks pretty good from albany to berkeley and to oakland. if you are driving from vallejo to richmond you will see slowing. also the the bay bridge toll plaza we see people getting out. as we look at highway 101 southbound on the peninsula

good morning. contra costa county this is a look at highway 4. this is your commute. you can see traffic coming up to the bay point area is moderate. heavy traffic in antioch which is usual. then over the hill to concord not all that bad. the department of fish and game trying to figure out how a mountain lion ended up in downtown santa monica. the big cat was spotted by a janitor. authorities tried to tranquilize the mountain lion but it didn't work. out of concern for the public safety they did shoot and kill the mountain lion. tests will be performed to see if the lion had rabies or any

other disease. contra costa county fire investigators will try to figure out what caused a house fire in clayton. that started at 6:00 last night. a couple and their adult son were rushed to the hospital. the fire killed two family dogs and caused an statemented $150,000 in damages. 6:26. oakland city leaders met last night to vote on banning so- called tools of violence during protests. that vote never took place. now our ktvu cameras were there when dozens of occupy protestors headed down the steps of oakland city hall. moments earlier the police cleared the city council chambers. that emotional meeting was just getting out of hand. several were outraged over the crack down on the use of shields and other large objects during demonstrations. >> i usually carry one. ly continue to carry one. and there is nothing you can do

to stop me. >> now oakland city leaders say the protestors often use large objects to attack police officers. the city council will take up the issue again during its next meeting. san francisco being recognized for have having one of the best public park systems in the country. the trust for public land ranked 40 park systems in the nation's largest cities. they were scored on park accessibility, park size and the number of playgrounds. san francisco ranked number one followed by sacramento, boston, new york city and washington, d.c.. a couple of houses caught fire in eastern contra costa county. we'll have an update. >> we are live in san jose where the suspect in the sierra lamar kidnapping and murder case is now in jail. find out when his first court appearance will be and if he could face the death penalty.

another is damaged in the area of stone road and bethel island road. the fire started just after 3:00 this morning. no reports of any injuries at this point but news chopper if t is heading to the scene. we'll have video as soon as we can make that available. time now 6:30. 90 minutes from right now volunteers from morgan hill will start another search for sieve era lamar. the organizers say this mornings search is critical after monday nights arrest. we have team coverage for you. tara moriarty is live outside the santa clara county jail. let's start first with ktvu alex savidge. you are at the search center. good morning, alex. >> good morning, dave. there will be a renewed push to bring sierra lamar home. investigators believe she was killed but so far her body has not been found. that is where volunteer searchers come in. they will be getting together here at burnett elementary school in morgan hill to do another volunteer search effort.

you can imagine there will be a feeling of sadness as people search the fields at hillsides. the 15-year-old last seen on march 16th as she was getting ready to leave for school. since then hundreds of people have taken part in this search effort. it's been organized by the class kids foundation. some volunteers got together last night to comfort one another after learning a suspect has been charged with the kidnapping and murder of sierra lamar. of course sierra's parents don't want to believe their daughter is dead. they are thankful volunteers aren't giving up on their efforts to find her. >> it's tough to hear. we're still hoping you know somehow they are wrong. so we are hoping for that right now. we are going to keep on searching just like we have been. >> reporter: meantime the source continues on the part of the santa clara county sheriffs office. their dive team is continuing

to focus on the reservoir south of morgan hill. the mother of the suspect told investigators her son went fishing there just a few days after sierra disappeared back in march. in the meantime the volunteer search effort will be going on throughout most of the day here in morgan hill. folks will be looking throughout this area. once they get done there will be a remembrance vigil here held at the elementary school. live this morning in morgan hill alex savidge. the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar is scheduled to make his first court appearance tomorrow. ktvu tara moriarty joins us from san jose with new details about what led up to his arrest. >> you know, pam, the really big breakthrough in this case happened recently when dna results came back from that red jetta that is antolin garcia's car. they found the dna of sierra

lamar inside that vehicle. they also discovered on march 28th they had dna results that came back from clothing that was found in her backpack. that also had his dna on that. he was placed under 24 hour surveillance at that point. deputies were hoping they would -- he would lead them to her body but that didn't happen. now he's here at the main jail. he is charged with one count of murder and one count of kidnapping. his mother told ktvu her son was aware that he was being watched. security at the trailer park where he lived with his mother, pregnant wife and wine-year-old daughter is extremely tight. she spoke to her son in jail and he said he had nothing to do with sierra lamar's disappearance. what he told us right now he

has a bargaining chips he can plead down in exchange for his remains. he believes they need to find that body remove that bargaining chip from him. the first court appearance for garcia torres is set for tomorrow afternoon around 1:30 in morgan hill. that could change to san jose. we will keep you posted. live from san jose i'm tara moriarty. stay with us here at ktvu channel 2 news for continuing coverage. we will bring you the very latest in the sierra lamar investigation as it happens. 6:35. overnight powerful winds toppled a big tree in unincorporated martinez. that is a big one. a 75-foot pine fell down on the boulevard just after 10:00 last night. it blocked both lanes of the road. police were called out there as you can imagine. it took the repair crews an hour and a half to clear that road. dozens of infants including some babies right here in the

bay area may have been exposed to tuberculosis. parents are being notified by two hospitals including one in fairfield. coming up at 6:45 what they are asking parents to do to avoid possible exposure. hewlett packard will announce thousands of job cuts when it announces quarterly earnings. speculation most of the cuts would come from the pc and printer division. the company has struggled with competition and expected to report a drop in revenue. employee efficiency is at the lowest point in a decade. all eyes on facebook stock again this morning which just started the fourth day of trading. under writer for the social media giant ipo now under investigation. ktvu noelle walker joins us now from menlo park. noelle. >> good morning. the headlines this morning not very flattering from the wall street post to the daily post.

facebook ipo probe take a look at what the stock has done. and there is talk over here about that insider trading investigation that you referred to. meanwhile the nasdaq opening bell rang five minutes ago and so far on trading facebook stock is up about $1 from its $31 start today. it ended trading at $31 yesterday. that was down about 18% from the opening ipo on friday. there were troubles from the start nasdaq glitch caused a delay in the start of trading on friday. now an investor has filed a lawsuit claiming the exchange was negligent in handling orders. >> what wall street firms have to do they have to balance on one hand the client. the on the other hand they have to balance the investors that don't want to lose money. >> reporter: the securities and exchange commission is

investigating potential insider trading claims. morgan stanley told certain clients to dump the stock when their own inside analyst changed the value of facebook stock. reporting live from menlo park noelle walker. 6:37. let's get you moving. sal, how are we doing? >> we are doing okay. today was much better than yesterday. today we do have normal slow traffic which is building in some of the key areas. let's go take a look at 280 though here in downtown san jose it looks good. right through the middle of the valley here. it will be a nice drive so far. wife been checking with the road sensors and chp we don't have much going on. moving along and taking a look at the commute in livermore. slow traffic coming in over the altamont pass. a couple of red spots. mostly yellow here. hayward to union city. southbound traffic a little slow. westbound 84 just after the

dumbarton bridge. then on the peninsula 101 and 280 much better. don't be shy 101 looks good out of the city. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza and again sun kind of at a tricky angle. i can tell it's a ten minute delay here. >> mostly sunny. patches of fog around. breeze s picking up for some. there is som imus about 25-35 miles an hour. mt. dyeable about -- diablo about 35. northwest santa rosa. again port chicago i think mayor island. vallejo around 15-20. sausalito and tiburon i've seen similar gusts.

half-moon bay airport 32. 50s on the temps. high pressure is building out here. as it does, that is driving an area of low pressure right up off of seattle and d.c. straight down on top of us. for this time of year i would say wow. it's going to give us a big change in our weather as we head toward friday for those of you heading out to the mountains. possibility of snow showers. two to four inches of snow. mostly cloudy. possible showers. this will be friday. cooler breezy to windy. we will start toe bound on saturday. slowly sunday and monday look okay. a little warmer for some. the breeze is taking the edge off for some. 60s and 70s. a couple upper 50s and very low 80s. temperatures 60s and 70s and 80s. they will start to drop tomorrow big time and we will continue to see that going into friday. a lot of upper 70s. temperatures near seasonal averages to slightly below.

good morning, to you. welcome back. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we are following for you. at an hour from now volunteers from morgan hill will begin a new search for sierra lamar. organizers say this search is critical after monday nights arrest in the case. the suspect 21-year-old antolin torres is accused of kidnapping and killing the teenager. >> morgan stanley is facing allegations on how it handled facebook stock. they are examining whether the bank only told some of its clients that they had cut revenue for facebook. new poll shows mitt romney close closing the gap between president obama.
