obama speaking to supporters at a late night rally in redwood city. good evening, i'm julie haener. >> i'm frank somerville. it's a whirlwind visit to raise money for his reelection. president obama speaking at the on public event of his trip to the bay area. live in redwood city where the president took the stage in just the last 20 minutes. >> reporter: the president is expected to raise about $4 million in his short time here in the bay area. he took the stage about 20 minutes ago. the president talked to a very enthusiastic crowd in redwood city and talked about the importance of the american dream. >> that if you're willing to work hard you should be able to find a good job. you should be able to own a home and maybe start a

business. strike out with a new idea. send your kids to a good school. give them a chance to do even better than you, no matter who you are. no matter where you come from, no matter what you look like. no matter who you love. >> reporter: every president attracts supporters and opponent, and it was no different here in redwood city here tonight. there were those on the left. >> the whole political spectrum has shifted so far to the right, he's somewhere to the left of dwight eisenhower for sure. >> reporter: and the right. >> what president obama seems to be supporting is not what we desire for ourselves and our children. >> reporter: some of those who paid to see the president in person have strong feelings about the election. >> osama bin laden is dead and general motors is alive. we need four more years.

>> reporter: others simply like mr. obama and his opening act. >> i want to feel the energy of the coming election. also, i like the band. >> reporter: he's referring to ben harper who performed before the president spoke tonight. it cost $250 million at a minimum to get in to the fox theater to hear the president. from here, mr. obama goes to san jose for another fundraiser. the price to get into that one? $3,500, and it's sold out. more details now, air force one touched down about 6:19 at moffett field. it was several minutes before president obama left the plane, he was greeted by the mayors of sunnyvale and mountain view. hanger one was pointed out, and she let the president know in her opinion it needs to be

preserved. >> the president headed off to atharton. people lined the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of the president's entourage. >> i feel he needs to improve his image, because he's too much in the hands of the gangsters of wall street. >> the fundraiser was filled with executives from very postable companies, such as google, pandora, and aol. we have learned the president discussed educational reform, and his healthcare act, but said he needs another term to accomplish what he set out to do. >> fundraising season is in full swing for the president and the presumptive republican nominee, mitt romney. the president has raised $514 million to far for his

reelection bid. as for mitt romney and the republican party, they have raised $363 million so far. and the majority of its donations are $2,500, which is the individual limit to a campaign, or a candidate's campaign committee. one republican consultant says the president comes to california to raise money, but holds few policy events here. >> it's to raise money, then he splits. why does he could it? the state is not competitive, he can get away with it. >> the president is set to attend a round table in san jose. that was moved for logistical reasons. the president is meeting with members of the asian pacific islander community. tickets for the event cost up to $35,000. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage. we'll be following the president tomorrow. at 10:45 we'll check back with

ken wayne as that event wraps up. we'll also hear from mitt romney who addressed supporters today on how he would overhaul education. fire crews were able to stop a fire from advancing. here's where it burned off highway 128 near chalk hill road. firefighters say tonight's gusty winds presented a real challenge. the fire was contained to 10 acres. it was the third fire today in sonoma county. in nevada, investigators say it looks like a wildfire burning 50 miles southeast of tahoe may have been caused about a smoulderring illegal burn. the fire burned two homes in 17 outbuildings. initially firefighters thought 17 homes had been destroyed, but scaled back on the damage.

the fire has burned about 7,000 acres. firefighters think the fire started when a resident failed to put out a burn on sunday, which smoulderred before reigniting. now to our continuing coverage for the search for sierra lamar. some 150 volunteers headed out to look for clues. they say they are not giving up, even though a suspect has now been arrested, and charged with sierra's death. that 21-year-old arrested is due to make his first court appearance tomorrow. antolin garcia-torres is facing one count of murder, and one count of kidnapping. for prosecutors, this case is anything but a slam dump. >> reporter: the suspect remains here at the main jail in san jose tonight, we're told he's in protective custody. kept away from the general jail population. tomorrow afternoon he's scheduled to be walked over to the hall of justice for a 1:30

arraignment for the kidnapping and murder of sierra lamar. the 21-year-old won't be seen like this when he was arrested monday night. there is an underground tunnel linking the main jail. sierra's body has yet to be found, and there is no murder weapon. yet the district attorney's office says it has enough evidence to go to trial. >> good teffs attorneys want to get this too trial -- defense attorneys want to get this to trial quickly. >> reporter: if a sierra's body isn't found, and he is acquitted. >> they cannot retry him if they find the body in a year or so. and there's evidence that he did it, it's game over. >> reporter: sources close to the investigation say the suspect told them early on, he often went fishing around morgan hill. garcia-torres's mother says in the day after her

disappearance, her son went fishing. >> reporter: about 180 volunteers searched today for the missing teen. sierra's mother says they're not giving up. >> we still want her back and we're never going to give up. >> reporter: we're told that cameras will be allowed in the courtroom for tomorrow's arraignment, and for the first time, we may tally here from antolin garcia-torres. live in san jose, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu, channel 2 news. there are new details tonight about garcia-torres and his arrest record. >> reporter: they shared photos of antonin. >> it's hard to see him in a

cage, locked up. we're thinking ice innocent. >> reporter: since their brother was arrested, they and their children have been taunted. >> that's your uncle on tv? you know, like he's a murderer, this and that. >> reporter: the sisters say they are aware of their brother's past criminal record, but stand by him. he was arrested in may of 2009. >> he got in the way of the officers trying to arrest a wanted felon suspect. >> reporter: court documents show he was arrested for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. the two later got married. he was arrested for battery when he punched his sister's boyfriend during an argument. and now police are linking him to one of three attacks on women in a safeway parking lot. >> it feels surreal, but i know him. growing up with him, and the person that i see on tv is a

totally different person than what i grew up with. >> garcia-torres lives in this rv park with his mother and daughter. we're told his mother has visited him in jail. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage. we will be in court tomorrow when garcia-torres makes his first appearance before a judge. hewlett-packard announced it is cutting 27,000 jobs in an effort to save billions of dollars. on wall street, investors braced the cost cutting share. they were up a little more than 9%. hp also released quarterly earnings, which beatanalyst expectations. those cuts are expected to save the company about $3.5 billion. the move comes as hp is trying

to recover from some major mistakes. >> they've tried to wiggle their way into a lot of these new niches like the tablets and iphones. they just can't compete with apple. >> the palo alto based company hasn't said what will be affected. in eight minutes, facebook's first positive day on the nasdaq, and the claim investors are making now in a new lawsuit. a new video is sparking outrage in san francisco. it chronicles violence in the mission. ktvu talked with area merchants tonight who say they didn't do enough to stop it. >> reporter: we're on valencia at 14th street. these windows were broken during the riot. now they say they're still

vulnerable. vandalizing businesses under the cover of darkness, and in disguise. a group posted this 11 minute video of the riot on youtube. the owner of this store front, property management system told his protesters broke five windows and carved an a for anarchists into a sixth window. >> this window was just replaced today. >> reporter: she would like to see those responsible brought to justice, but as far as she knows, one man was arrested, but was later released. >> i wish we could use that video to arrest people to stop them from doing that in the future. but it's frustrating. >> reporter: a few doors down, we showed the video to this store manager at newarks. a clothing store. >> it's upsetting, but it's also, i don't really understand why. >> reporter: she questioned why protesters targeted small businesses, and why police failed to stop the vandalism. >> it's just crazy to me that

it started at 9 police station, and was able to make it all the way down here. >> reporter: police officials say they have seen the video, but would not comment on specifics. in a written statement, the department said this video could yield information for the investigation. >> if the same occurrence happened again, i would expect the same results. >> reporter: merchants describe the experience as draining and time-consuming. the group that posted the video on youtube does not claim responsibility. if you went outside today, boy you know it was really windy today. check out the flags flying flat out in the north bay. also, the white caps that dot the bodega bay. we have had significant winds for three days now. san francisco international

she has the voice, but could she pull off an "american idol" first? we watched tonight's finale with a group of fans who say jessica sanchez brought their community a sense of pride. >> more trouble for facebook. the accusations tonight that concealing key information has left a lot of investors paying the price. >> and at 10:30, how safe is the meat we eat? disturbing evidence of illness in our meat supply.

phillip, phillip. >> he is the new "american idol." the 21-year-old from georgia won the trophy and a contract. they did not reveal the break down of the vote. idol's break down is a california girl of filipino dissent. fans of jessica sanchez call her an inspiration. >> reporter: they certainly do. i have to tell you, the last 90 seconds of tonight's finale completely grueling for the people who gathered here tonight. they were literally on the edge of their seats. and when the announcement was made, there was complete disappointment here. they had bonded with jessica

sanchez, because like her, they were of filipino dissent. >> the winner of "american idol" is phillip phillips. >> he's still young, and she has to move on. there's so many things and so much ahead for her. >> reporter: these dispointed fans haven't missed an episode. applauding her perfect pitch and powerful vocals. >> people are just in awe of how she's able to reach those high notes more than any other filipino singer. >> reporter: he says jessica's talent, and her filipino heritage endured fans to the teen. not only here in america. but all over the world, especially in the philippines where her rise to idol fame has

been covered on television. >> on the front page of the newspaper in the philippines. >> reporter: and in print. >> it's the most unifying experience for the filipino community. people are able to see in her success, the potential for their own success. if she can do it, they can do it. >> she put us in the map of music, right? and they're very proud of her. >> reporter: he everyone here agrees that sanchez has an extremely bright musical career. while she was unable to become the first filipino "american idol," she is still their idol. facebook's troubled ipo is generating a lot of headlines. today, it's generated a pair of class action lawsuits as well. facebook stock closed at $32 a share. up $1 from yesterday.

shares are still down nearly 16% since facebook's debut last friday. today, investors sued facebook, along with lead underwriter morgan stanley and other wall street banks. the suits claim facebook and the banks concealed key information from certain investors, costing those investors billions of dollars. >> they increased the size of the offering. they increased the price of the offering. at the same time, apparently, they were getting wind that the results of the company, the financial results were a little weaker than they anticipated. >> the suit filed in san mateo county that large institutional investors got word of the weaker forecast, and dumped shares early. leaving small investors to pay the price. facebook says the lawsuits are without merit. morgan stanley declined to comment. it was a mixed day on wall street. a late rally left the dow with only a 6 point drop. the nasdaq was up a little more

consumers, it's no big deal. >> honestly, i try to ignore the fact there's antibiotics in the meat. >> reporter: for others, a private. 80% of its beef and pork and all of its chicken is labeled antibiotic free. that consumers demanded. >> i don't want the antibiotics in the meat i eat. i don't want the resistance as bacteria. >> reporter: we're in berkely, they're very health conscious. very food savey. >> they don't even put up signs anymore. >> reporter: 100% of our meat is free of antibiotics. >> consumers willing to pay extra. >> worth it to me. >> reporter: farmers routinely used antibiotics to enhance growth. last month, a new federal policy took aim at that, but our investigation revealed the new policy is flawed. >> supporters say it finally

ends decades of unnecessary and potentially dangerous overuse of antibiotics in animals. farmers say it may actually raise prices. critics say it doesn't go far enough. >> it would allow many of the same users that are currently in existence to continue under a different name. >> reporter: they sued fda. the lawsuit triggered this new policy. but we've learned its voluntary, and get this, allows antibiotics, if farmers just say they're for disease prevention. >> low levels of using antibiotics for indefinite periods of time. this is exactly the thing that can lead to antibiotics resistance. >> reporter: at least 2/3 contaminated with bacteria. our analysis revealed about 3/4

of those resistant to antibiotics. including to the drug which was banned in poultry years ago. >> we believe antibiotics for chickens which they are for our kids and pets, for treating sick birds. >> we do put the antibiotics into the flock to treat it. that is done in very minute amount of times. we don't believe there's been any link to the poultry medications that we use, and what's resistance in humans. >> reporter: i've discovered multiple studies for human resistance to antibiotics from beef and poultry. that some animals, which never got antibiotics still had drug resistant antibacteria. it appeared to stay perhaps years in the soil, in pens and

become a reality, but on wheels, instead of rails. some of that money could go to late night bus service on weekends, after bart trains shut down. the buses would run from san francisco to several stations in the east bay, starting in september. bart's also proposing hiring 56 workers. the agency will be taking public comments at its meeting tomorrow morning in oakland. getting around the bay area this coming memorial day weekend could be a challenge. let's start with the dumbarton bridge. it will be closed for the entire weekend through 5:00 tuesday morning. caltrans crews will be doing retrofitting on the bridge. drivers will have to use other bridges. in san francisco, first street will be closed between mission and howard streets.

happening now. president obama has just wrapped up his speech in redwood city. these pictures are from inside the fox theater where supporters paid at least $250 a piece to attend tonight's campaign fundraiser. ken wayne is covering the president's visit and joins us live outside the theater to tell us more about what the president had to say. >> reporter: the president left the fox theater about a half hour ago, it was a sold out event with 1300 people inside. a few people are still lingering out in front of the theater tonight. the president talked about moving forward. forward of course is his new

campaign slogan. he talked about restoring the american dream, and he mentioned his political opponent, mitt romney by name several time tonight, saying romney represents old policies. >> he's saying, my 25 years in the private sector gives me a special understanding of how our economy works. if that's so, why is he peddling the same bad ideas that brought our economy to collapse. most of the business people i know, if something doesn't work, they do something different. he must either think there will be a different result, or he's hoping you don't remember the last time we tried it his way. >> reporter: president obama is now on his way to san jose. he has one more event tomorrow morning, where he's meeting with asian americans. that too is sold out at about $35,000 a ticket. that event is tomorrow morning. i talked to the mayor of

redwood city briefly. after this event, she said she still had people calling her office, right up until the last minute to get inside the fox theater. she said she couldn't help them out, it was sold out. >> at ktvu.com, we're posting more clips of the president's address tonight. just look at the video player on the home page. >> mitt romney talked about his plans to overhaul the education system if elected president. he spoke at a meeting of latino business owners. romney said too many students are stuck in failing schools. >> so as president i'm going to give the parents of every low income and special needs student the chance to choose where their child goes to school. >> romney said it will be up to the states to make sure parents have enough choices of public or charter schools.

the candidate also attacked teachers unions, saying they don't find for students and stand in the way of improving education. at one point a woman interrupted romney and said latino voters won't support him. she was escorted out of the room. the daughter of cuba's president is in the bay area today. in cuba, she's known for her vocal support of gay rights. this afternoon, she visited san francisco general hospital as part of a symposium on transgenter health. her visit has come under fire from some congressional republicans. they say the obama administration should not have granted a visa to a high level representative of the castro rei jet stream. ktvu has learn -- castro

rei jet stream. the u.s. coast guard says it plans to lift a ban in time for friday's spinnicker cup race. five were killed when a monster wave struck their boat and swept them overboard. a safety zone for boats during the golden gate bridge fireworks celebration this sunday night. boats will be kept out of that area from 8:30 p.m. until 10:15 p.m. on sunday night. it's needed to accommodate the set up, and then transportation of the firework barges. scheduled for 9:30. it was a windy day. it's been a windy past few days. the winds are still out there. blowing at stinson beach. let's take a look at some of the live buoy readings.

it's windy up there. one of the windiest spots in the state. gusting to 36 miles per hour. the golden gate bridge right now, winds are gusting to 22. the winds have really been the story. as we mentioned earlier, wind gusts to 50 miles an hour at the san francisco airport. winds could top out at 40 tomorrow. more of the same. the real wind, right along the coast. right along the beaches, that's where the winds are the strongest. overnight lows are cool tonight. that's just because the winds are going to die down and it's going to get cold. high pressure sets up. that's good. it sets up for at least another couple of days. sunny and windy tomorrow. we've got a system coming in here on friday, that looks like it could deliver a few showers, a few sprinkles. the computer model bears this out. friday is going to be the coolest day of the week for sure, with temperatures just in the 60s. at 7:00 tomorrow, a little bit

of a puffy cloud. friday afternoon, just down the east side of the bay area counties, we're going to see a chance of rain. you might get a thunderstorm, especially as you go up towards the lake tahoe area, then it's kind of out of here. anytime this time of year you get that much cold air this far south, and you get a forecast of potential rain, you could almost see anything. a thunder shower. but it will be widely scattered. the main impact we all notice, it's just cooler. no more 70s on that day. is there is a good chance for a sprinkle somewhere in the bay area or the 9 bay area counties as we head into your bay area friday. mid-70s, not that warm. a little cooler than today. today we had upper 70s, even low 80s. 73 in gilroy. 73 morgan hill. along the coast, you have the 50s. fog is not an issue. the wind has been howling out there. the five-day forecast with your bay area weekend. you've got raindrops on friday.

a two-alarm fire destroyed two houses early this morning on bethel island. it started just after 3:00 near stone road and bethel island road. when firefighters arrived, they found the two homes engulfed in flames. no one was hurt, but the damage was so extensive, it may be several days before a cause is determined.

the search is underway tonight for a gunman who shot and wounded three women a half block from a tenderloin playground. the shooting happened around 1:00 this afternoon. police say the shooter may have been targeting one of the women he reportedly used to date. firefighters say none of the women's injuries appear to be life-threatening. emeryville police said today that a 61-year-old man in a wheelchair who fell off the pier last night has now died. that accident happened around 6:00 last night, the woman jumped into the water to try to save the man, but unfortunately couldn't reach him. firefighters were able to get him out of the water, but he ended up dying at the hospital. the coroner told ktvu, the man has been islanded burk they -- has been identified, but they haven't been able to locate his

family yet. among the solutions being considered, if the measure fails, leave four police officer jobs vacant, negotiate furloughs and layoffs with the city employee unions, and repair city vehicles less often. antioch city council members have decided now is not the time to change a street name. there was a proposal to change l street to marina parkway. it would have cost the already cash strapped city nearly $40,000. mostly for changing street signs. the head of the secret service told u.s. senators today the prostitution scandal involving agents in colombia was a one time affair. >> i'm deeply disappointed, and i apologize for the misconduct of these employees and the distraction that it has caused. >> mark sullivan says action has been taken against the 12 agents who were all in colombia to prepare for president obama's visit. several senators questioned whether what happened in

colombia was really an isolated incident. some say they've heard of other incidents of misconduct and sexual harassment of the secret service. in egypt, voters waited in long lains to cast their ballots for a new president in the first free presidential elections there in 60 years. there are 13 candidates and no clear leaders, since polls are un reliable. a runoff election of the top two vote getters is expected in mid-june. in pakistan, the doctor who helped the u.s. track down osama bin laden was convicted today of treason. he was sentenced to 33 years in prison. he ran a vaccination program for the cia and collected dna evidence that verified bin laden was at that compound in abottabad. in costa rica, authorities
