we have big news to an area -- to a bay area landmark. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm claudine wong. tori campbell has the day off. and happening right now, president obama is in san jose this morning. the president has one more fund- raiser scheduled before leaving the -- before leaving the bay area. alex savidge is outside of the president's hotel with the key group of voters the president is going to be meeting with. >> reporter: well, good morning. at 8:30, the president will be holding a business forum with asian-american supporters. it will be happening here at the fairmont hotel. you can see police officers are parked and there's security.

i went inside a short time ago. later this morning, though, wealthy donors including silicon valley executives will get inside after they pay $35,000 each to attend this event. the president arrived in the bay area last night. he first attended a private fund-raiser at a home in atherton. then he moved to the fox theater in redwood city. that's where he addressed. not long after he began to speak, he went after mitt romney criticizing him as businessman. >> he's saying my 25 years in the private sector gives me a special understanding of how our economy works. well, if that's true, why is he pushing the same ideas about our economy on the brink of collapse? >> reporter: through just his tour of the bay area, his fund- raising visit, mr. obama expected to net about $4

million. some of them say mr. obama more concerned with wealthy voters. one final fund-raiser will happen later this morning in downtown san jose meeting with a group of asian business supporters. president obama courting asian- americans in pacific island is expected to be a key group, voting in record numbers this november. after mr. obama leaves the fairmont hotel, he will be heading to moffett field where he will take on -- take off on air force one, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. and at ktvu.com we posted more clips of the president's address last night. just look for the video player. minutes before president obama's motorcade headed down el camino real, an apparent drunken driver crashed right along the motor kate rod. witnesses say the driver -- motorcade route. witnesses say the driver was being chased by police, the car

david chu. first of all, this is a change and a big boost for one of the -- for one of the major icons. >> absolutely. san francisco, our coit tower is one of the most iconic, i think, symbols of our city. it's one of my favorite defendant nations. it's a place where over -- destinations. it's a place where over 200 folks visit a year and coit tower represents the history of our city and the murals which were done during the new deal represents, the -- new deal which represents the city. >> reporter: these are necessary repairs for this icon. >> absolutely. in addition to that we are to renovate the bathrooms and make this facility more accessible to disabled vehicles and touch up the paint that's

deteriorated over the years. recently we did a report that showcased the need to perform these improves. fortunately, i had asked our record park department, our budget share to really figure out if we could find any money to do this. fortunately, we have been able to do that. >> it we -- we're talking about in excess of $1.5 million. we were joking a moment ago with my photographer that looking in the couch cushions, you managed to come up with in excess of $1 million to complete the renovations necessary here. >> a number of years ago, we had 2,000 -- 2004 revenue bonds and had projected the cost to do other improvements. we're actually a little bit more than what they came out to be. so we are able to use the cost savings. >> great news for coit tower and great news for people to -- for people who want to come

here. thank you for joining us. we'll check back in with you throughout the morning. and you can see the view inside coit tower. news again that the repairs will be taking place that they have found the necessary funds to work on the roof, the iconic murals you are looking at now among other necessary changes. we'll follow up on the story and have more reports for you. for now we're live in san francisco in coit tower, christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, two carjacking suspects in custody after a high-speed chase in san francisco. this one started at 1:40 where the police chased two men and a white van at washington and battery streets in san francisco. the chase then went over the bay bridge into oakland. that's when the chp and oakland police took over. it ended at maritime street and berna road. one suspect was caught running

away. the other was caught in the bushes. he suffered an apparent seizure and went to the hospital. both men are in their 20s and facing carjacking and robbery charges. police in stockton are searching for two men who injured a small dog with an explosive device. police say the men put the device on a dachshund and it exploded. police near the explosion found the injured dog. they took it to a pet hospital. it's expected to survive. police are hoping someone will help track the men down. it could be last year for team sports. students are fighting the cuts saying they don't just play for fun. they play for their future. >> i'm playing for my future. i'm trying to go to college and get a scholarship. >> reporter: the school district actually voted in

february to cut sports but parents and students didn't find out about it until yesterday. parents plan to bring their concerns to the district today. hey, sal, can you help the folks on 280? >> i can. >> i know you can. >> i can help the folks everywhere. northbound 280, getting up right into the valley in san jose. you can see the traffic is -- is doing pretty well. we might start to see a little bit of a pattern today. it's the thursday before the big memorial day weekend. some people are trying to stretch this out may be leaving this afternoon. if you are anything like my family was, you will try to leave, i don't know, about 2:00, sounds like a good time, right? well, other people think about that, too. so just remember that. or you will leave tomorrow morning at 3:00 a.m. that sounds right, doesn't it? let's take a look at concord to walnut creek. highway 4, slow in bay point. 680, 24 looks okay to oakland.

look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's backed up for about a five- minute to ten-minute delay. here's steve. mostly cloudy. sunny to start. there's fog. there is a lot out there. it will be increasing over the next 4 hours as our system inches closer. you can start to see off the oregon coast right there. that's what's heading into san francisco right around the sacramento valley. some updated information will be in in about 30 minutes. that's been the trend. they are very consistent. three being our forecast models. west at 20. west-southwest snow, napa airport was down to 44. now 48. we had low 40s. the nights are very short. i think we'll have lower 40s as we get towards saturday morning or sunday. today sunny but breezy. all eyes will be focused on the north. that will give us a mostly cloudy day.

terrorism. now, secretary of state, hillary clinton, says instead of hacking into those websites. the u.s. will confront extremists in open forums. there's also new information about the proposed movie about the u.s. raid that killed osama bin laden. the government watchdog group has released defense department and cia records that detail conversations with the people behind "the hurt locker." a jailed pakistani doctor who helped the u.s. find osama bin laden is now in bad health. the doctor was sentenced to 33 years behind bars for tree son. now, he told the -- treason. now, he told the cia that bin laden was hiding out in a pakistan compound. the cia says that doctor will be examined again today. ee being kept away from other prisoners for his safety. the uss miami is in dry

dock at a naval shipyard in maine. a fire broke out in the living quarters and command center section. six people were hurt including a firefighter who sufficiented heat exhaustion. no missiles were on board when the fire started. two men soldiers want the -- are prohibited from joining special military units. two female army reservists have filed suit claims the -- claiming the policies violate their constitutional rights. while the pentagon declined to comment about the suit, officials say they are committed to expanding the roles of women in the armed forces. 7:16. well, facebook's troubled initial public offering is under new scrutiny in washington. alison burns reports, congress

and federal regular raters are investigating. alison? >> reporter: there is more fallout had morning here on capitol hill. two congressional committees now say they are examining facebook's ipo, congressional staffers seem to be in the initial gathering page. morgan stanley gave information to favored clients about facebook's financial information. richard bloomenthal said this morning that congress needs to -- needs to make sure the ipo process is more transparent and works force everyone, not just insiders. >> there may be a need to change the law so that the playing field really is fair and balanced and everybody gets the same information at the same time. >> reporter: several lawsuits were filed yesterday against facebook and the banks involved. the companies insist they did noththing illegal. reporting live from washington, d.c., aim -- alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news.

7:17. there's more possible fallout. there is a report that facebook is in talks with the new york stock exchange to have its stock lifted there -- listed there. facebook started to trade on the nasdaq last friday, with complaints about it every -- ever since. european union leaders meeting at a summit in belgium say they are preparing for the possibility that greece may lead the eurozone. the european leaders safe they will stand by greece as long as greece stands by its commitments. they say no decisions will be made until the next round of elections in greece on june 17th. if the new government that comes to power in grease won't agree to follow through with the austerity measures. that would set the stage for greece to leave the eurozone. a group calling itself annika

l.a. posted this video of a riot. the vandals wore hooded sweatshirts to cover their identities. the video is infuriating business owners who accuse police not doing enough to stop the riot. >> this was the sixth window affected. >> she's still recovering? >> yes. >> police have seen the video but would not comment on specifics. in a written statements the department says this video could potentially yield information. the group is not claiming responsibility for the vandalism. new details about an assault that happened at san francisco's beta breakers race. police say a 31-year-old man was wearing a troll like wig when he was attacked after the race was over. this happened about 5:00 on sunday evening in the sharon

b.a.r.t.'s board of directors meets in oakland. they want ideas how to spend a $30 million budget surplus. some of that money could go to

late-night bus service on weekends. if approved, the buses would run from san francisco to several east bay stations starting in september. b.a.r.t. is proposing hiring 56 workers. time now, 7:22. let's see what's happening on the roads. sal, how do we look? >> like a normal thursday morning and then, you know, it's gonna be a little bit different today. let's go out and start with highway 4. now, highway 4 is slow coming from the first willow pass to the second. you will see some slow traffic here. you can see hout it's bunching up. it's also a little bit slow in pleasant hill and a little bit slow on 24 on the way westbound too oakland. moving along to the toll plaza, we have kind of a big packup. we had an earlier crash on the bridge in the lanes. caltrans and chp do a good job. they get up there and move it to the right-hand side. it did cause a little bit of slowing. it's about a 15 to 20-minute delay before you make it on the bridge. we showed you contra costa east. let's show you western contra

the suspect in the sierra lamar case is due to be in court. he's due to be in court at 1:30 this afternoon. lorraine blanco is joining us live with the major challenges facing prosecutors. >> reporter: well, with no murder weapon and no body, the case against garcia-torres will be a tough one for prosecutors. the 21-year-old suspect faces one count of kidnapping and one count of murder in the sierra lamar case. police arrested the suspect monday night. we won't see him today. he will be taken through an underground tunnel that connects to the courthouse. even dna evidence, the case will be a challenge, we're told. >> keep in mind, that's circumstantial evidence because

arrested. the occupy demonstrators had gone to the church after taking part in a rally, protesting the may 6th fatal police shooting of 18-year-old alan blueford. a police search continues for a man trying to lure a teenaged girl into his van in san francisco. it hatched tuesday morning while a girl was waiting for a bus in the bayview district. we were in the area in the morning. police say the man in the orange van butted up to the girl. when she said no, the suspect reportedly tried to grab her. but she got pay way. that man described as latino between 27 and 30 years opened. he has dark syn skin with a thin build and long black hair.

a person is in custody for a 33-year-old murder case. 6-year-old etan pea uts vanished on his way to school. his disappearance gained navel attention. he was one of the first missing persons to appear on milk car tons. they have a man in custody who implicated himself in the case. "the new york post" identifies him as pedro hernandez and that he lured the boy, killed him, stuffed his remains in plastic bags. he was arrested in new jersey yesterday. more high school students are enrolling in online math and science classes.

california public schools may be forced to shorten their school year. the governor says he would allow schools to cut up to three weeks over a two-year period. the san francisco school superintendent carlos garcia says his school district cut four days this year. >> to put all of the economic crisis on our children, it's appalling. what are we all just sleeping watching this occur. this is happening. he also warns the governor's tax plan is not a fix-all. even if it passes, he says his district will have to cut $83 million. 43% of likely voters disapprove of the job he's doing. that's according to a new poll by the public policy institute of california. in april's the governor's rating was at 47%. 56% of the vo -- 56% of voters

say they will vote yes. the rest are undecided. 2 inches could make all of the difference for businesses at an airport just outside of the airport. one of the runways at the tracy municipal airport is 2 inches shy of 4,000 feet. the other is two feet longer than that. a runway must be 4,000 feet or longer for some jets to legally land and take off. that means fewer people use the airport and support the businesses there. the runways were longer until a recent repaving job that fell just short of that magic number.

a project to revamp some golden gate park soccer fields will be the focus of a planning commission hearing in san francisco today. now, under the proposed plan, grass at the beach chalet fields would be replaced with turf. the project calls for 60 new lights and seating for spectators. supporters say the changes could cut down on maintenance and replace the time. it's going to be a challenge to get around the bay area this holiday weekend. first the bum -- dash dumbarton bridge is going to be -- first, the dumbarton bridge is going to be shut down. this will last until tuesday.

there are going to be delays on the golden gate bridge sunday evening for the 75th birthday celebration. before the fireworks show, the fireworks will be closed and then the road will be shut down at 9:00 a.m. it is expected to be reopened the 10:15 that night -- reopened at 0:15 -- 10:15. make sure that you know that these things are happening. we'll remind you a lot. let's go out and take a look at the commute on northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. we'll see some slow traffic in the valley, northbound 101 is also slow in pockets from blossom hill. just pockets all way up to sunnyvale. looking at 237 -- i'm southerly

a high school band performed the end-of--the-year -- end-of-the-year ceremony. but almost didn't happen. someone stole the equipment. the truck turned up about 0 miles away. most of the equipment is -- 30 miles away. but the truck is still missing. chief michael meehan is under fire for ordering ten police officers to go out and look for his teenaged sons stolen cell phone while some of those officers were on overtime. the police chief now tells the contra costa times that his son did not get preferren shall treatment -- preferential treatment. the meehan's earlier controversy has to do with sending a police officer to a

reportary house back in march in the middle of the night hoping to get that reporter to save his -- to change his story. in january of last year, george zimmerman told city officials he went on a city ride along with the police and criticized the officers as being lazy. but then he sent an e-mail to the police chief saying he had a new perspective after becoming part of the neighborhood watch. he claims he shot trayvon martin in self-defense after the 17-year-old attacked him. fire crews out there were able

to keep the flames from advancing. at least ten acres were burned. and the winds are picking up in arizona making for some pretty dangerous conditions in the firefighters out there. they are battling the gladiator fire. it is now 26% contained. but those strong winds could make matters worse. the fire started 11 days ago. so far it's burned almost 16,000 acres. it also forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes and smaller -- in smaller mountain communities. there is a recall to tell you about as some dried mushrooms sold at kos toe -- costco -- tell you about for some dried mushrooms sold at costco. they may have been contaminated. the sell-by-date is april 16th, 2013. those mushrooms are often used

in cooking asian food. there is a new report out saying the $1 cigarette tax support is fading. in light of the news, prop 29 supporters started using a new campaign ad, meant to be sarcastic. one of the ad says i support big tobacco because they killed my wife and that's one less mouth to feed. the city of los angeles is on course to become the largest american city to ban plastic bags. the l.a. city council approved that ban yesterday. large stores will have six months to phase out the bags. the band will not go into effect until an environmental impact report is completed. that is expected to happen before the end of this year.

on the commute? >> yes. northbound 101 slows at 880 for your drive in sunnyvale. 280 is slow, pretty much north of the downtown exit, all the way up to the lawrence expressway and then it gets better by the time you get to cupertino. i was checking with the chp. we don't have a lot of crashes in the south bay which is good. but we do have some slow traffic. moving to the peninsula, southbound 101 traffic looks pretty good as you drive from san mateo to redwood city. 280 is always a safe bet. across the bay, 880 southward. let's move to some live pictures. how the traffic here looks pretty good. you won't be see he -- seeing any as traffic today. they are off today. the yankees are in. there are a lot of people going there. we had an earlier crash on the upper deck of the bay

camino real, an apparent drunk driver crashed. witnesses say the driver was being chased by police. he was headed south on el camino, and when he got to the intersection, the car hit the divide, and jumped the sidewalk and crashed in front of the pacific inn. police detained that driver and then moments later, the president's motorcade passed by. house budget committee director paul ryan is known as a rising star in the republican party. he's here in the bay area after giving a speech at the reagan presidential library on simi valley on tuesday. the ryan fund-raiser was scheduled at the gap headquarters. but it was changed to another secret location. >> two carjacking suspects are in custody after a high speed chase from san francisco to

oakland. it started at 1:40 this morning when officers pursued two men in a white van at washington and battery streets in san francisco. the chase then crossed the bay bridge into oakland and that's when the highway patrol and oakland police took okay -- took over. one suspect was caught trying to run away while the other suspect was caught hiding in the bushes. he suffered an apparent seizure and was taken to the hospital. both men are said to be in their 0s. the city of vallejo will pay for $4 million to setal lawsuit. it was -- according to the paper, court orders show officers -- officers tased the man inside the home after he refused arrest. the police were called by his girlfriend and the city did not admit any wrongdoing. only on 2, restoring a san francisco landmark, the coit tower. the city has just come up with about a million dollars for it.
