concerned here. >> reporter: look at this home. it was remodeled and that is part of the story, a couple, this is their home but burglars struck and they set the home on fire. >> reporter: the front guard, the house. you have to look close to see signs of the fire. black soot on the front door. saturday night one person or more burglarized this house and then committed orson -- arson. >> reporter: he is the only neighbor that would talk on camera. >> a person wouldn't be concerned i think would be something wrong. >> reporter: 5 homes in the neighborhood have been burglarized since april. >> in the five, two of the homes have been set on fire. >> reporter: police say this home was broken into and set on

fire in the middle of the day. a burglary turned arson is unusual and concerning to police. >> from a safety standpoint, for anybody who was home during the crimes or neighbors whose homes could also become involved. >> reporter: no one has been hurt but the hard work fixing up the house was wasted. >> it is a shame, a person trying to get it in shape and then all at once it is gone. >> reporter: there are no suspect descriptions. police say there is a $2,500 award. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. a man accused in the disappearance of sierra lamar has been charged with murder and kidnapping. antolin garcia-torres appeared in court today in san jose. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live with the challenges still facing prosecutors. >> reporter: the district

attorney says he assigned one of his most experienced prosecutors to the case. it appears the murder charge hinges on dna connecting antolin garcia-torres to sierra lamar. >> reporter: antolin garcia- torres first's court appearance, he did not say a word. and they asked for more time before he enters a plea that he kidnapped and murdered sierra lamar. >> made me sick to my stomach. i am angry. >> reporter: outside court supporters and friends of sierra lamar's family said they are still determined to find her. >> we are not going to give up. >> reporter: experts say finding a body is critical to getting a conviction. >> we don't have a body or a weapon and there is no murder

had a female passenger was killed but the driver of the car and the driver of the tractor-trailer only had minor injuries. woman from redwood city pleaded not guilty to charges she torched his ex-boyfriend's bed while he slept. prosecutors say her ex- boyfriend awoke to flames. he suffered minor burns. strong winds battering the bay area today and causing problems in san francisco. the great highway is closed because of so much blowing sands. it will stay closed till the winds slow down. the north bound lanes are shut down and the south bound lanes are closed. in the sierra the national weather service has red flag warning in effect with wind
