these individuals are responsible for shootings and most of the violence occurring in the city of oakland. and today, they are off the streets. opd and federal agents teamed up to bring down suspected drug dealers and other criminals and this partnership is one of our top stories. good afternoon, everyone. i'm heather holmes in for tori campbell. we'll get to that major announcement in oakland. but first we have developing news. it's happening right now in san

jose. authorities are at a pond in south san jose. that's where a man's body has been found. robert handa following this developing story for us. he joins us live with what he just learned from police. robert? >> reporter: well, heather, san jose police homicide detectives are now on the scene here where a body was recovered a little more than an hour ago near almadan lake in san jose. here's the dive team. they pulled out a male body at 10:44 a.m., about a half-hour after they discovered the body, off blossom road, near where many people live. >> it's scary because we don't have this around in our neighborhood as far as bodies found. but the waterways here are just kind of -- it's beautiful, but, of course, people that are up to no good are gonna use the waterways, you would think. >> reporter: police say the

search began yesterday evening when some people called to report their friend missing in this area. this is property of the santa clara water district. and drivers -- divers are still in the water. san jose police say investigators have confirmed the bodzy a male but may not know the cause of death until the coroner's office conducts its examination. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. now to oakland and the results of a recent crime crackdown in that city. dozens of arrests were made and the details they were just announced. new at noon, alex savidge was at the news conference and says o.p.d. had then. >> reporter: well, the o.p.d. teamed up with the feds. investigators say they dealt in drugs and weapons. as one prosecutor put it today, these are who carried around

guns like many of us carry around cell phones. right now, those guns have been seized. >> we hope we've accomplished and sent a strong message for those who choose to engage in violent crime. we will find you and prosecute you. >> this was a three-month long. >> reporter: along with the defendants picked up by undercover officers, there were also 92 firearms taken off the streets. agents seized several kilos of meth and marijuana as well. this operation targeted known violent offenders. many armed grews -- groups that robbed stash houses. the chief of police howard jordan says getting all of those guns off the streets goes a long way toward improving public safety.

>> they were very signature because these were violent people. we're gonna continue to target the ones that are left so we can remove them off the streets. >> reporter: the chief says this local federal partnership known as operation gideon 3 has already resulted in a 40% drop in crimes in may. oakland will continue to get this kind of help from the feds. as the mayor and chief of police put it, they hope to bring some relief to many neighbors here. back to you. >> major arrests there. thank you, alex. danville police are warning about a phone scan but a surfacing in that city, scan -- scam but a surfacing in that city, in one case, one person claimed to be a son. in another case, a grandson.

police say check with other relatives if you get a call like this and call police who can confirm if that person really is in jail. a man accused of three sexual assaults in san francisco's mission district pleaded not guilty to the charges this morning. 32-year-old frederick dozier junior was arrested in january. prosecutors say surveillance video helped identify dozier. they say he's responsible for three sexual assaults. he's being held without bail and his next court appearance has been scheduled for july. late this morning a state lawmaker threw a wrench into the pg&e plan. allie rasmus is live with more. >> reporter: behind us is the headquarters for the p.u.c. in san francisco. they are the agency that fine pg&e for what happened with the san bruno pipeline disaster.

the agency has not fined the utility yet. but if and when they do, they want the money to go toward rebilling the old pipelines. pg&e expects to pay anywhere from $2 million to $25 million. under california law, the money from those fines usually go into the state's general fund. but assemblyman hill filed a bill that would require the money from pg&e fines to repave the gas like systems in northern california. >> to me it's aren't the rate systems, the people within is the -- the people within the service area -- we're ones who have been the victims. >> we support the concept. we see this as an opportunity to improve pipeline safety. >> all of the fines. >> reporter: now, assemblyman hill says if pg&e is able to use the fine money to improve

chateau. tickets run as high as $50,000 each. tomorrow's fund-raiser is chaired by meg whitman who was also an employee of romney's at bain capital. facebook's stock is down down 20% since the ipo debuted less than two weeks ago. today the stock is down another 9% t was down more than $3 a share -- 9%. it was down more than $3 a share. that's the first time it's fallen below $38. tonight the menlo city park is set to vote on plans to allow facebook to expand. the social networking giant moved into the old sun microsystems campus on women low broad -- willow road. right now they are only allowed to have 2200 employees.

a second powerful and deadly earthquake today struck northern italy, where thousands

apartments. police say he jumped out and was last seen wearing jeans and a red shirt. it may be difficult for others to watch. a vallejo says it's proof her daughter was bullied in school. and she's using this to stop bullying. one of the kids videotaped it and it shows her being kicked and -- kicked an punched by a girl during a fight at hogan middle school. the mother says the school is not doing enough to stop the violence and bullying. >> not only did the bully tape the incident, they put it on youtube. you've already done this, we're gonna show this. >> the mother shared with us some photographs after the attack and they show a bruised and stolen eye as well as places in her daughter's -- places in her daughter's hair

some other economic news, not so good. take a look. >> the dow up more than 100 points right now. that bad economic news, american's confidence in the economy apparently fell in may. the conference board says the consumer confidence index now stands at 64.9. that's down from 68.7 in april. researchers say slow hiring and that big stock market drop as well as the global economy are among consumer's biggest -- consumers' biggest concerns. next month, 70,000 people will receive their final unemployment checks sooner than expected. federal extensions of benefits had run 99 weeks. but in a budget-cutting measure, the number of weeks they were eligible was cut as the state saw decreases in their numbers. here in california, the maximum number for claims filed is 79 weeks. so far this year, 500,000 people have had unemployment

insurance cut off early. the manpower survey shows one third of all employers globally are having trouble filling jobs because there are not enough people to do the work. that includes nurses, teachers, engineers, translators and accountantings. traffic -- accountants. traffic recognize say it could take you longer to -- engineers say it could take you longer to drive on the southbound side where this metering light is. this the southbound side starting tomorrow afternoon. experts say it will speed up traffic by 6% even though it could take longer to get on the freeway. coming up at 5:00, as we told you a few minutes ago, at the top of the newscast, the san francisco ethics commission fakes up the case of suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. we expect to learn whether he will keep his job or lose it.
