across when they came to the back parking lot of a high school. then a second happened over to the left there. against the wall of the library where the paint is pretty much melted off the stucco. after -- melted off the stucco. crews raced to the scene. they found the control panel at the front which pointed them in the direction of the library and in the back parking lot the dumpster on fire and 40 feet away the blaze that started in a pile of wood against the library. >> that item burned up and the intense heat caused paint to change colors. >> the cause is under investigation by the arson investigators and she is sifting through the material as we go along. >> reporter: it looks suspiciousat this point? >> at this point it's called a suspicious fire. >> reporter: crews have the fires contained within 15 minutes but it took nearly 4 dozen firefighters an hour to get it under control. there is some damage but it's on the outside of the building and no one was hurt.

that's good news. and since school is out and there's no summer school students won't be affected. tara >> in other overnight news police are investigating a stabbing in the tenderloin district. officers were called to ella street after 1. police say at ktvu a victim was cut but they don't know if the weapon used in the attack was a knife. the victim was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. two shootings in oakland last night left three people injured including two juveniles. the first happened on 63rd at loll around 9. and friends of one of the victims drove him to the hospital. the 15-year-old was shot in the leg and they don't believe was the intended target. a second rim reportedly in his -- victim reportedly in his 20s was rushed by am -- by am lieu lance to the hospital after being shot in the tom being a.

so far no -- stomach. so far no word of an arrest. another you. >> i will -- juvenile was shot and injured on 93rd avenue at b street around 9:45 last night. an ambulance rushed the victim to the hospital. we don't know his condition and police say that there are no suspects at this time. time 7:03a petaluma mother accused of stealing from her son's school. santa rosa press democratreports nicole nicholas is accused of going through classrooms and stealing the purses of teachers. nicholas was arrested wednesday at her home on suspicion of using stolen credit cards to buy several thousand dollars worth of items at different stores. police say stolen items from the school were found at her car. budgets cuts may force san francisco city college to make major changes. the chronicle reports the school may have to close or combine some of the 12 campuses.

trustees voted for an independent evaluation. city college facials a $14 million budget deficit trying to avoid layoffs and canceling classes. but at the same time, they are trying to keep their full accreditation. the school has about 90,000 full and part-time students. it's 7:04. berkeley has a law that bans people from lying on sidewalks. now voters can decide whether to take it a step further. we are in berkeley to find out about the new proposal. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. starting about right now, at 7 a.m., it is illegal to lie down on a city sidewalk in berkeley. mayor wants to make it illegal to sit down. the mayor wrote an ordinance passed by city council prohibit people from lying on the sidewalks from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. when enforced people sit up. the potential law would closethe loophole make it illegal to sit on the sidewalks

in commercial areas. mayor plans to bring up the measure on june 12th. one woman says it's an assault on civil rights. >> i think it's wrong and unfair. and it's exactly what they did in san francisco. it's clearly an attack against street people homeless people to impose a 50 dollar ticket on someone for sitting on the sidewalk is ridiculous. >> reporter: so far we have not found anyone who supports the proposed law. the mayor says it would make the streets more presentable and enjoyable for visitors. if approve it would cost $50. hive in berkeley lorraine blanko ktvu. police in santa clarea are investigating a sexual assault. a woman told police she was assaulted on park avenue and poplar street around 3 yesterday morning. police only have a vague description of the suspect. they are asking anyone with information to give them a call. time 7:06.

vacaville police investigating a house explosion that may possibly have been caused by an illegal drug making lab. the police have guns out and drawn as they went to the home on juniper near stinson after getting reports of dangerous dogs on the property. the police say they discovered two men inside the house. their arms were burned in that explosion. police say they smelled chemicals in the air. they say the men may have been trying to make hash oil. 7:07. and let's check in with sal busy morning in the news to see how things are moving on the roads. >> reporter: moderate morning and we have what couple slow downs but we have not had a lot of major problems and noticeably lighter on some commutes. let's go outside and show outbay bridge toll plaza. there's little delay in some of the lanes but not like what we are used to. most days it's backed up back there to the 880 but today it's good and barring crashes it should stay this way. sometimes later in the morning

that 150,000 jobs were added but it's way less. 69,000 jobs were added in may. the unemployment rate now ticks up to 8.2%. 1,000 government jobs were cut. there were a big losses in construction. most of the hiring was in health care and transportation. republican presidential candidate mitt romney issued a statement saying the weak report is devastating news for the american worker and american families. house republican leaders wrapped up a news conference pointing the finger at president obama. >> these job numbers are pathetic. and you know, the american people really deserve better and i think on a right leadership we can do better. reporter: president obama left for minneapolis about 40 minutes ago and going to be touring a honeywell factory today. and urging congress to pass new legislation to help veterans get jobs. we will have more on reaction from the white house during my next update in an hour.

fines if the police department does not take immediate action. the judge is overseeing the mandate of reforms that stem from an oakland police department scandal nearly 10 years ago. there have been three police shootings in oakland this year and one case the suspect was killed. starting this weekend, fairfield police get extra help fighting crime. a grant is allowing the city to add 4 police officers to deal with urgent needs. they will be des naitd as a special operations team to free up other officers to investigate a variety of serious crimes. time 7:19. a man in seattle is called a hero now for trying to stop a gunman who killed five people inside a cafe. police say 40-year-old ian shot 6 people on tuesday and killed 5 before take his life. investigators say 56-year-old lawrence adams picked up some of the bar stools and threw them at him even when he was pointing the gun at him.

crashing his car. michael sanchez junior was found comatose off a freeway off-ramp earlier this month. although he is still in the hospital, and cannot talk, his sister tells the mercury news he is more alert now. sanchez was able to communicate by blinking to yes and no questions. well mother in concord is angry her son's school didn't notify her he was choked in class by other students he e sent a text to his mother saying was choked and threatened by three students last friday during a p.e. class. the school says bullying is not tolerated and the school official apologized for not notifying the boy's mother sooner. police in concord are now investigating. reservoirs will be searched this coming monday for signs of sierra lamar. the dive team will search the reservoir where the man accused of killing her reportedly went fishing around the time she went missing. last friday search of the area

developers willing to take on some of the financial risk of building new student housing. for the first time in the school's history, cal is reviewing proposals for developers for the next student housing project. this is according to the san francisco business times. the school could contract with developers to build and fund buildings. ucsf has used the fee developer model for the 200 million dollar neuroscience building in mission bay. 7:37 this is a final day for state law makers to approve a bill restricting the use of cameras to catch drivers who run red lights. the state senate passed the proposal that would require cities to not consider how much money they could get from fines when deciding if they will install the cameras. it would require them to post warning signs within 200 feet of the intersection that has the cameras. the state assembly is supposed to take up the bill at the final lawmaking session today.

state lawmakers had no say but they will be getting less money before the end of the year. a state compensation panel approved a 5% across the board pay cut for all state elect official including the governor who will earn $165,000 a year. that's down about 9,000 dollars. for state legislators base pay drops to 90,000 dollars almost 5,000 less than they earn and they are set to take effect on december 3rd. time 7:38a controversial piece of political art goes on display today at the san francisco museum of modern art. take a look. it's a bust of former san francisco mayor george moss connie who was assassinated along with supervisor harvey milk. it was created for the opening of the center but removed. some people objected to writing on the pedestal about the assassination. this artwork was created by the

another area over there by the library. you can see where the coloration is a little bit different from the rest of the building. just after 2:30 this morning, crews raised to the -- raced to the scene when the fires triggered an alarm at the school many they found the control panel at the front of the campus pointing them towards the back of the school and that's where they found the dumpster on fire and another blaze which started in a woodpile against the side of the library. >> they arrived to the front of the building, noticed the alarm and went to the alarm panel and saw the alarm was coming from the library area. as they investigated further, and come to the rear of the building which took a little time they noticed they had two firing in the bark -- fires in the back. >> reporter: they had it contained within 15 minutes. there is some damage but it's to the outside of the building. no one was hurt and since school is out and there's no summer school it won't affect students. that's the good news. there is surveillance video that detectives are going to be

welcome back. 8:28. suspend san francisco sheriff is facing new action in that misconduct case against him one day after a controversial video showing his wife in tears was released. claudine wong is in san francisco to tell us what to expect next claudine. >> reporter: well, the commission is charged with figuring out whether or not the suspended sheriff mirkarimi will get his job. june will be a busy month starting today with the deadline for the mayor of san francisco to turn in what the commission calls in a bill of particulars regarding the charges of official misconduct against the sheriff. this week they took steps to

outline how it will go down. both will ask the witnesses to make declarations about the case. next week both sides will turn the declarations in and the week after that, both sides can submit objections as for subpoenas and wet gel did -- we will get an idea who will testify. it's not a trial so the rules are different. >> it's not quite as clear as law. there have been plenty of politicians in san francisco history that have committed crimes. some have been charged and some have been convicted. some have not been charged for their crimes. but yet they remained in office. >> reporter: the commission has met a couple times on this issue. already refused to keep the video you are look at private. attorneys for the mayor and his wife wanted this video kept out of the public eye but they lost that fight and yesterday it was released showing her talking about a bruise she says ross

doesn't take immediate action. judge is overseeing the mandated reforms that stem from an oakland police department scandal almost 10 yearsing ago. there have been three police shootings in ukeland -- oakland this year and one case the suspect was killed. beginning this weekend, police in fairfield will get some extra crime fighting help. a grant will allow the city to hire 4 police officers to deal with urgent needs. he will be designated as a special operations team freeing up other officers to investigate a variety of serious crimes. it's 8:32. san jose police made dozens of arrests in an undercover prostitution sting. 63 officers took part in operation bee sting. 32 arrests were made. police say female officers went undercover to arrest johns at three different hotels. another operation focused on arresting prostitutes. a judge ordered two oakland motels to shut down for one year. oakland city attorney says the

economy inn on east 12th street and the national lodge on international boulevard have been hubs for prostitution. neighbors and area businesss are cheering the decision to close the motels. but an attorney for the motel owners says he will appeal. >> i told her clearly that they have not had a single act of prostitution since late last year after the judge gave them certain rules to follow. >> and it was not until we got a prelimb nare injunction they began to pay attention but because as we explained to the court, we need to shut them down to have them have a change of heart and mind. >> the judge ruling states the motels must close by july 31st. each motel must pay a total of $45,000 in fines and the city's legal and police expenses related to the case. time is 8:33. the testimony resumes today in the brian stow beating case. a -- brian -- bryan stow

midnight on old river road in hollydale. the chp says the bicyclist didn't have a light on his bike and he was riding against traffic. he was in his early 30s. the driver is cooperating and has not been arrested. time is 8:35. and an altered photograph of a slain vallejo police officer may have cost a stay lightee his job. according to the times harold,steve johansson was fired after he forward an offensive photo on his work computer. the photo shows trayvon martin aface photo shopped onto a photo of officer capoot and e- mailed to him by a coworker. johansson says he forwarded that e-mail to get advice on how torespond. today more than a dozen media groups will be asking a judge in florida not to seal the records in the george zimmerman case. zimmerman is accused ofkilling

people hurt in separate shootings in oakland. first shooting happened on 63rd street about 9 last night. and the oakland tribune is reporting a 15-year-old from berkeley and a 19-year-old from oakland were hurt. the other shooting happened about 40 minutes later on 93rd street. reportedly injuring a 16-year- old from oakland. authorities are telling the tribune all three are expected to recover. and an ordinance is aimed at street people with bans sit on sidewalks in downtown berkeley. they are breaking the law that would be a fine of $50. the mayor wants to put the issue on the november ballot. and there's an arson investigation happening now at a high school in san jose. firefighters rushed to ever green high school after two suspicious fires hours ago this morning. ktvu tara has been out there and you are back with the latest. tara. >> reporter: yeah, if you look inside the dumpster that investigators say someone intentionally set on fire you

will see some burned math books. was it a prank or act of revenge in that's something they will have to figure out. after 2:30 this morning. crews raced to the scene when fires triggered an alarm at the school. firefighters found the control panel at front of the campus revealing a fire at the back of the school near the library. there they found a dumpster on fire and another blaze 40 feet away which started in a woodpile against the side of the library. >> there were surveillance cameras in the area. and so the fire caused investigator will review the tapes to get clues. >> reporter: crews had the fires contained within 15 minutes but it took nearly 4 dozen firefighters more than an hour to get it under control. there is some damage but it's only on the outside of the building and no one was hurt. since cool is out and there are no summer school classes student wouldn't be affected many live from san jose, tara moriarity. a concord mother is angry her son's school didn't notify

garcia-torres made a court appearance. prosecutors charged him with one count of murder with a special circumstance of kidnapping instead of two counts of murder and kidnapping. they seem confident they can get a murder conviction. garcia-torres didn't enterer's plea. his attorney was given 6 more weeks to prepare the case. 8:49. tomorrow san francisco firefighters will mark the first anniversary of the tragic deaths of two colleagues killed in the line of duty. lieutenant vincent perez and firefighter paramedic anthony valero died battling a house fire. they were trapped by a sudden flare-up. tomorrow's ceremony includes a moment of silence and a memorial garden and plaque at their fire station. a roadside memorial thathonors a novato teen killed in a drunk driving crash mysteriously disappeared. the classmates of isaac have been placing crosses and candles at the scene of the crash on novato boulevard for

the past two years. he was killed while riding in car with a classmate who was drunk. this was back in may of 2010. the last week all traces of the memorial were gone. the police, park rangers and public works crews and all say they didn't remove it. it's 10 minutes before 9. he will veto police want yourhelp finding a gunman suspect of robbing a business. officers released the photo of the suspect. the man walked into a business on san pablo avenue with a gun and demanded money. no one was hurt during the robbery. police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. u.c. berkely is looking for developers to take on the financial risk of building new student housing. for the first time in school history cal is reviewing proposals for developers for the next student housing project according to the san francisco business times. the school could contract with

developers to build and fund buildings. ucsf used the fee developer model for the 200 million dollar neuroscience building in mission bay. 8:51. this is the final day for state lawmakers to approve a bill restricting the use of the cameras to catch drivers who run red lights. the state senate passed the proposal that would require cities not to consider how much money they could get from fines when they decide if they are going to install the cameras. it would require them to post warning signs within 200 feet of an intersection with the cameras. the state assembly is supposed to take up a bill at the final lawmaking session today. state lawmakers had no say but they are going to be paid less money before the end of the year. a state compensation panel approved a 5% across the board pay cut for all state elected officials. including the gomplegor who will make $165,000 a year -- governor who will make $160,000
