new information about a police shooting that resulted in a teenager being killed in south san francisco. that is one of our top stories today. good afternoon, everyone. i'm mike mibach in for tori campbell. the president of the united states is in the bay area. mr. obama landed at san francisco international about 25 minutes ago. this afternoon, he will make his way into san francisco for

two soldout fund-raisers. eric rasmussen is live at sfo with more on the president's quick visit. eric? >> reporter: hey, mike, it sure will be quick. air force one will have about four hours her on the tarmac at sfo before it makes the president onto los angeles later this afternoon and there are people we can show you who came out to see the president, some invited guests, supporters of his who lined up to see him today. while he's here in the bay area, he's expected to raise as much as another $5 million we're hearing for his reelection campaign. just about 15, 0 minutes ago, we watched the president step off air force one. here's some of the video we shot this morning. it's a familiar scene. this is his second visit to the bay area in two weeks. just like last time, this is strictly a fund-raising mission for the president as he came off the steps down onto the tarmac today. you may be able to see him there greeting lieutenant- governor gavin newsom and san

francisco mayor, ed lee. a small found table is his first stop at one market plaza -- round table is his first stop at one market plaza and they are paying $3500 per person. after that he will attend a luncheon. tickets for that event, $5,000. political experts say that money will be spent out of state with the president expected to easily win california in november, they say there's no incentive for him to do any real campaigning here. >> he will be 0 ut here. most of us -- he will be out here. most of us won't see him. there won't be big events. >> reporter: today the president is expected to encounter some protesters in the financial district, not far from where occupy san francisco demonstrators have been set up. you can also expect some street closures of course, possible traffic issues on 101 as the president makes his way to and from the airport. of course, just about ten minutes ago, we saw the president's motorcade lead him out of here, out of the airport

as he heads to san francisco. sew you may see some backup if you are heading out on the streets to the city. after that, again, as we mentioned, the president will be coming right back here this afternoon. he will get on air force one again, head down los angeles for another fund-raising event with the lbgt council tonight. this is strictly a fund-raising mission. we have crews out, gathering information about what the president is doing here today. we'll have much more on his very short visit here at 5:00 and 6:00. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you for the report. president obama could face a new challenge from a state he won four years ago. the state of wisconsin. last night, governor scott walker became the first governor to survive a recall election. coming up in 12 minutes, why mitt romney says these results could be good news for him come november. president obama was the only nail on the california ballots on the primary in california. he received 1.5 million votes. on the republican side it was

an easily victory for romney with 100% of the precincts reporting, he received 79.6% of the votes. ron paul, 10.2%. romney also won in montana, new jersey, new mexico and south dakota. a new patel is brewing offer -- battle is brewing over the pension reform measure. a big victory with 70% voting yesterday. but today city employee unions announced they are filing lawsuits against the measure arguing it violates employees' vested rights against their pensions. lorraine blanco is live with the story. lorraine? >> reporter: well, voters overwhelmingly supported measure b as you said. at a news conference here at downtown superior court in san jose, legal council for several public employee unions said it is unlawful and vowed to fight it with multiple lawsuits. the san jose police officers association and the san jose firefighters say the measure

makes unlawful changes to healthcare, disability insurance. workers have to pay 16% of their retirement benefits and new hires would get less generous benefits. >> the mayor of the city has four months. in addition to that, literally, hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not a million dollars, from funds both inside and outside of this city by various business interests was spent in an election that drew less of the third of the electorate to vote. >> reporter: this is video of supporters gathering last night. supporters say pensions for san jose city workers are too generous and too expensive for the city. the unions told told us -- told us today you can expect more lawsuits next week. live in san jose, lorraine

blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you for that report. well, tobacco companies are celebrating, prop 29, came's dollar-a--pack-cigarette tax looks to be in defeat. at this time, the proposition is losing 51-49%. tara moriarty is live in san francisco with the latest on this story. >> reporter: it's still too early to call. 65,000 votes still need to be counted but they will need 56% yes votes in order to get 29 to pass. >> prop 29 cuts smoking and keeps the money here in california. >> reporter: now, we spoke to a ucsf professor and he blames the -- if you read the initiative --

[no audio] >> reporter: some newspapers, including the "l.a. times" came out against 29 saying the revenue generated should go to the state which now faces a $16 billion deficit. all of these factors, experts say, played into voters' decision making. >> $50 million repeating a lie over and over and over and over again confuses people. there would have been a total game changer. right now in california we're down to about 12% smoking, two- thirds of those people are light smokers. and if 29 passed, we would see smoking go down to 8%. people becoming even lighter smokers. >> reporter: california did not raise the cigarette taxes since 2000 if the measure passes. california would still only havele -- have the 16th highest tax rate in the nation. it could be days or weeks before a winner is declared. coming up on the news at 5:00, learn why some people it was the state of our economy that

south this afternoon where the police just wrapped up a press conference a few minutes ago. john? >> reporter: mike, police wrapped up the press conference about 20 minutes ago and they left a lot of unanswered questions. but any did release new information including confirming the boy's name is derrick gains. they also did say he pulled a gun on the officer, although they did not say whether he pointed it at the officer. it hatched before 9:00 last night at an arco station near mcdonald's where he had been hanging out with friends before the shooting. he left with the friend on foot. a police officer approached them because they say he was acting suspiciously and that's when he ran. his aunt told ktvu that he's the kind of boy that would run if he saw the police. the officer gave chase and shortly after, the boy, achording to police -- according to the police, pulled the gun and that's when the police opened fire, killing the boy. police would not be specific about why the officer made the

initial stop. >> the officer felt that the two suspects were acting in a suspicious manner and failed -- and they felt that the officer needed to make subject with the subjects. >> this is the hangup where i would pick them up at on king drive. this is would -- this is where they would be at. >> reporter: now, there is this small memorial growing at the site where the boy was shot. police say he's on leave and the san mateo district attorney's office is now leading the investigation. live in south san francisco, i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, john. oakland police say felony charges are expected to be filed against tomas arona. he's accused of shooting at an alameda county sheriff's deputy who tried to pull him over on monday night. police say he raced away and took three people hostage inside a home on high street near 880 after a seven-hour

sandoff, he surrendered and was arrested. no one was hurt. a new search for sierra lamar is now underway in the south bay. this is video from the search on saturday. volunteers check in every wednesday and saturday morning at burnest school in morgan hill. they will spend the day searching for any sign of sierra. the 15-year-old disappeared on march 15th on her way to school. family members hope she will be found away. but authorities have charged the 21-year-old suspect with her kidnapping and murder. a bomb has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping after allegedly grabbing a 3-year-old in napa. police say the 49-year-old woman took the child yesterday afternoon at a salvation army in napa and began walking toward the door. the child's mother and other witnesses fought to take the child back. the woman who police say is a transient was eventually arrested. police say the child was not hurt. wisconsin's governor becomes the first state leader to survive a recall election

the stakes just got higher for president obama in wisconsin after democrats failed to recall the state's republican governor. ktvu's alison burns explains why the election could have national implications. >> reporter: after wisconsin's republican governor, scott walker, fought off a recall last night, presidential candidate mitt romney issued a statement saying that victory would echo beyond wisconsin's border. walker finished 9 points ahead of tom barrett to become the first governor ever to survive a recall election. this morning, the head of the republican governors association said on cnn the vote boosts romney's chances in the democratic-leaning states. >> i do think it helps to put wisconsin in play, given the fact it's about somebody

getting results on debt, budget and jobs. that's what walker did. that's what romney is talking about. >> reporter: supporters were so up yet, one of them even slapped him in the face. she said she was upset that he conceded to early. republicans are already touting the win in fund-raising e-mails going out today. reporting from washington, alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. a city of stockton is facing the possibility of bankruptcy by the end of the month. the filing will happen if officials are unable to broker a deal with the city's creditors. yesterday, the city manager was granted permission to seek chapter 9 bankruptcy in three weeks if no deal is made. this vote comes as the city threes to restructure hundreds of millions of dollars worst of debt. if no deal is reached, stockton would become the city's first city to file for bankruptcy. three suicide bombers blew

themselves up on a market in afghanistan in a coordinated attack. 22 people died and at least 50 others were injured in the triple bombing in kandahar this morning. the taliban claimed responsibility. the taliban also said it was responsible for a helicopter crash that killed two americans today in eastern afghanistan. a senior u.s. defense official says it does not look like the enemy activity caused that crash. a jury was collected today in the child molestation trial of jerry sandusky and a new allegation has emerged against him. >> this is video of sandusky arriving at the pennsylvania courthouse. prosecutors now say they have love letters he wrote to an alleged victim. victim number 4 is expected to read the letters in court when the trial begins on monday. he will be the prosecution's first witness and testify that sandusky gave him gifts, including a set of golf clubs. a high school student in -- high school students in brentwood suspended over a senior prank will get to take their finals but they will not

get to participate in graduation ceremonies. parents accompanied 12 heritage high school seniors into two courtrooms yesterday. they fought to have the suspensions lifted but a judge ruled against them. >> he's gonna hold up the grades of the kids that are my clients. >> makes me sad because i've gone all this way and i -- looking forward to wearing my cap and gown and now i can't. so it makes me really sad. >> seniors were suspended for vandalism. the superintendent said he will allow the students to take finals today and tomorrow. astronomers hope the latest celestial ehaven't will attract more kids to science. big crowds watched the caltrans it's to venus life. that's what they call it when you can see vee just pass the earth and the sun. the sun had set by the time the

check reporting 60 degrees. forecast headlines for today, more sunshine out there. it will be warmer. tomorrow, a few high clouds move into the bay area but we'll still classify it as mild to warm. this weekend a big weekend change for temperatures are going up for both saturday and into sunday. high pressure is the key factor right now. with that the storm track being pushed up to the north. as we head into late thursday and also into friday, some of this energy moves in in the form of a few high clouds and also some cooler temperatures but no major changes. for today, more sunshine, temperatures up a good 5 to 10 degrees from yesterday's highs and wind speeds do crank up as we shed you around 10 to -- showed you around 10 to 20 miles an hour. here's the forecast model -- a lot of clear skies this afternoon into the evening hours. we'll take this into thursday. you can see a few high clouds moving in. that's the result of the partly sunny forecast for tomorrow and then into friday an increased onshore breeds an still some patchy fog that will lead to the cooldown then temperatures spring back up just in time for

learned the names of the other finalists. donald trump fired back this morning saying that charge is false and plans to sue her. organizers of the pageant said she was upset over the decision to let a transgender contestant to participant. while the 49ers are moving out of san francisco there doesn't seem to be any hard feels between the city and the team. the board of supervisors unanimously approved a measure allowing the 9ers to break their lease at candlestick park one year early. they plan to play at the new stadium for the 2014 city. they will pay $9 in addition to the money they would have received in the -- if the team stayed for the last year. coming up tonight at 5:00, crews change their focus in the search for missing south bay teenager-- missing teenager sierra lamarr. and we'll have a wrapup of the president's visit today. thank you for watching the noon
