we begin with lloyd lacuesta and the freeway closure that's needed to accommodate pg & e's repairs. >> reporter: there's been a change of plans, they were planning to close the freeway at 9:00 but they pushed that back because they said pg & e needs more time to repair. what you see in the distance is pg & e crews preparing to do repair work. that's because pg & e crews are going to be running power lines across all lanes of the freeway. >> we're going to be literally taking the two wires, the new ones across the freeway and

zinching them up into place. >> motorist, if they do not want to be caught in the closure, stay away from the area. >> reporter: the driver suffered a medical emergency which caused her to lose control of her automobile. again in a state highway 580 will be closed, all lanes will be closed in both directions beginning at 11:00 tonight. lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. when that car struck the power pole the down lines struck a fire. >> my mother was in the house, so you know they did get my mother out. so we just hope our home is safe. >> reporter: it wasn't a big fire just 2 acres, or especially hard to fight just

over an hour. but it got everybody's attention just two weeks into fire season. and it moved fast. >> we saw it and looked again and it was literally just going up the hillside. >> reporter: these two women were right behind the elderly driver who plowed into the power poles. they stopped to help dodging downed power lines. >> there were some that were two feet tall, we had to duck to miss them. >> reporter: an open bible in the car seat. >> she was trying to get out. so i kneeled down and took her purse from her. this woman had to literally step out of a wire to get out of her car. >> reporter: about 100 firefighters swarmed the hill, taking no chances with houses houses nestled along a ridge top. police with bull horns evacuated dozens of households, allow to return later to homes

with no power but no fire danger as well. >> our neighbor plant these trees about 20 years ago and they just went into flames. >> reporter: a road below the fire and a road above did serve as fire break. but still this fire rushed up the hill along this eucalyptus. a small fire put out that flaired up. in oakland, debra villalon, ktvu news. we have a developing story in alameda county right now where firefighters have made quick work of a small grass fire. it was burning along interstate 680 between senol and fremont. one of our traffic cameras caught these pictures of the northbound lane of 680 stopped as fire crews got into place. right now drivers are still

facing delays in that area. >> and chief meteorologist bill martin joining us now, he's in the weather center with a red flag posting. >> we start out with today's fire condition. look at the humidity 44%. that's why firefighters got it out in an hour. but look at what's happening this weekend. note the humidity, 10%. look at the wind gust up to 45 miles per hour. kind of a big deal so red flag warning goes into effect saturday and it's going to definitely be an increase in fire danger in eastern parts of the bay area. so big deal with the weather. we'll talk more about this as i come back in just a bit. we'll go right into your bay area weekend. in 30 minutes the wildfire burning in southern california that's also closed in

interstate. how quickly calfire says it can respond to a wildfire any where in the state. and we'll be watching the situation in oakland and plans to close 580 in an hour from now. mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the killing of oscar grant. mehserle has already served his two year sentence, the appeals court said mistaking his gun for a taser amounted to criminal negligence. mehserle's attorney says he plans to appeal now to the state supreme court. in nine minutes, two men ordered to stand trial today in the case of injured giant's fan bryan stow. the taped conversation sited in the judge's ruling. a young man suspected of shooting two people in a vallejo park has been found in los angeles. gregory bethany is in san

francisco tonight. he is accused of the shooting in crest ranch park. police issued a warrant wednesday and they tracked bethany from phoenix to los angeles. police also searched two vallejo homes and recovered a rifle that they say is likely the murder weapon. san ramon police announced the arrest of a second suspect in at a jewelry store. according to investigators when one of the would be robbers brandished a weapon the store owner shot and killed them. a fourth suspect is still at large. new at 10:00, fresh evidence of a recurring problem in antioch where squatters have been taking over foreclosed homes. this time ktvu's eric rasmussen got a call for help from the former owners of the house even though they don't even live there anymore. >> reporter: those former owners found out they are still

liable for what's happening. we've relocated tonight as a precaution. but earlier we got a chance to question the people accused of bringing some problems in a neighborhood less than a mile from here. >> you guys live here? >> yes, we do. >> reporter: are you squatting in this house. >> no, can you get the cram a off me. >> reporter: neighbors say this woman and several others have been squatting at this house for most of the year despite the story she gave us. >> so i just want to fine out your side of the story. >> i got a lease. >> reporter: can i see it. >> that's none of your busy -- business who are you? >> i'm a reporter with channel 2. >> you need to leave please. >> we're going to do everything we can to get them out of that house. >> reporter: formers owners left the house after losing it to foreclosure. they only found out about the

squatters after we contacted them. the property is still in the cutler's name. now neighbors say it's become a magnet for crime. >> i was told one guy had needles on him and the other had a weapon on them. >> why isn't this their problem? >> there should be, there's nobody that holds them accountable though. >> reporter: instead it's the cutler's who have confronted the unwelcomed house guests and given them five days to leave the home that was part of their american dream. >> our former neighbors are being tortured this was not our intent. >> reporter: the cutlers are ready to file papers to evict the squatters if they don't leave on their own. authorities tell us squatting has become an especially serious problem in this part of contra costa county. we're live here in antioch, eric rasmussen, ktvu news. the stock market's have had their best weeks so far this year after a truly miserable month of may. the dow gained 93 points rising

for a fourth day in a row. nasdaq was up 27. positive reports played a part in the increase. facebook ipo may have lost -- cnbc reports that ubs did not receive confirmation it had bought a million shares from clients and posted multiple orders. for its part facebook shares finished up 79-cents at 27.10. that's still 3% below its initial ipo price. and back here in just 10

they say they filed time cards for other officers. the city attorney has declined to comment because he hasn't seen the lawsuit yet. new information now on a nearly hour long chase last night through contra costa county. police today identified the driver of a stolen truck as 25- year-old christopher andrews of castro valley. the chase spent sparking flying after the truck ran over the police spike strips. it all started in pittsburg. a los angeles judge has ruled the two men accused of beating giant fan bryan stow will stand trial and if convicted they could face years in prison. ktvu's christien kafton was in the courtroom today where an audio tape suggested that the suspects have already considered what could possibly happen to them. >> i'm ordering that both defendants be held to answer to

the los angeles superior court. >> reporter: louis sanchez sat motionless when the judge sited a taped jailhouse conversation between the two men at one point of the tape sanchez apologizes for getting his friend into trouble. >> man, i'm sorry marv. dude, we're [ bleep ] pro, regardless. >> defense attorneys argued that tape could refer to another fight not necessarily bryan stow. >> it's not specific enough and never does he say i did anything to mr. stow. >> reporter: meanwhile sanchez attorney argued prosecutors never defentively identified the two men as the men who attacked bryan stow. >> it is clear that there was no identification. >> reporter: prosecutors argued that witnesses placed norwood and sanchez at the scene and

said there was pattern of aggressive behavior in and outside the ballpark. >> both defendants should be required to answer on the charges against bryan stow. and like wise mr. sanchez should be held to answer on the other misdemeanor battery charge. >> reporter: sanchez will face a charge on the attack of bryan stow and charges inside and outside the stadium. he's facing 11 years in prison. norwood is facing nine years for the attack on stow. both could get 10 years in federal prison if convicted. both are due back in court in two weeks for the arraignment. and more details now bryan stow's family responded to today's hearing online. thanking authorities for their work in investigating the case. a new blog post reads, we put our faith and trust into everyone involved we know it's important to them as well to see justice prevail at the end

of all of this. ktvu today talked with one of stow's coworkers about today's ruling. >> very heartened by it the fact that they initially caught these guys and positively identified and they feel they have enough evidence to go on with the trial. we all take a lot of comfort in that. >> his former coworker went to say stow had a lot of friends at amr. and he always talked about the giants. ramos has been convicted of three counts of first degree murder. the victims were anthony bolognia and two sons. ramos believed they were rival gang members. he is facing life in prison without the possibility of parol. and it's windy out there right now. we go north of concord and out

mansion that the car taker says security has been increased. in nevado, rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. water service has now been restored to a san francisco neighborhood near fisherman's wharf after a water main ruptured today. water flooding out of a water main disrupted services between beach and main. services were disrupted including the radisson hotel where guests were without water. water was restored about 1:00 in the afternoon. workers across the city walked out of their jobs. employees with the communication workers of america staged a rally. some say they recently received a memo from management threatening lay offs unless

high school graduation ceremonies are being held tonight across the bay area. jana katsuyama is live now in martinez to explain how one community is helping kids party in a safe and sober way, jana. >> reporter: that's right they are sending their kids to las vegas or at least the multi purpose building at their school that has been transformed with bright lights. the mirage complete with the smoke as well as music, dj and casino tables for them to enjoy a little bit of gambling i guess for raffle prizes. it's all a night of fun to help keep the students safe and off the streets. >> reporter: in the setting sun the graduates took their final steps tonight on the ohambra

high school football field. marching toward their futures as family and friends watched and cheered and held back a few tears. >> we're so proud but hard to let go on graduation night. there's so much for the graduates and we wish them all the best, they've had the world in front of them. >> a lot of these kids it's the last time they see each over. because the kids go to college, get married do different things they all split up. >> reporter: city leaders, police and community members are sponsoring a party to celebrate and to make sure these graduates are safe. grads can dance, eat, play video games, gamble, and even have a mock marriage all for free. parents raised $50,000 in donation. >> it's really an example of the community coming together to do great things for kids. the idea came as having a safe place for them to spend graduation then. >> by then they are exhausted they don't have enough energy

at this hour firefighters are battling a brush fire fort of los angeles. it's burning in hilly terrain. i5 the key artery in and out of los angeles was shut down for hours because the smoke created such poor visibility the traffic is moving again in both directions. however two lanes remain closed in the northbound direction. they are expected to reopen

though by 1:00 this morning. no injuries have been r- rted and no structures are threatened and as of right now that fire is 35% contained -- have been reported and no structures are threatened. firefighters are getting read did for an active fire season. there are 22 air tankers spread across the state and fire officials say they can respond to any location in california in 13 minutes or less. and they say that will definitely come in handy. >> i feel in our 38 years, we've had our fair share of fires. >> tanker crews say they're capable of slowing the fire down so that fire crews on the ground can put out the fire. the u.n. says they could smell the stench of death.

nearly 80 people were killed. there was evidence of a brutal attack and fires that were used to cover the crime. in china the driver of a bus found himself at the bottom of a sink hole. the driver was hospitalized with injurys to his face. he was the only person on the bus. heavy rains in the area may have created that sink hole. in japan the prime minister said it is necessary to restart two nuclear reactors. japan shut down all of its nuclear plants after the tsunami damaged fukushima. the country depends heavily on nuclear energy. father's day is a week from sunday but not every day is able to spend time with his family. in san quentin, a special

in san jose the city clerk says there's really no excuse for it he simply made a mistake. why that mistake may keep four libraries from opening for at least the next two years. >> reporter: four recently built libraries across san jose including this one are ready to open but if not due to budget cuts. save san jose libraries decided to collect signatures for an

degrees. that will putt us into the 90s. forecast then for tonight. i don't think fog will be happening tonight. i think you wake up in the morning and it'll be very nice at the coast and everywhere else. gusty winds as we're seeing out there right now. sunny and warmer as we go into the bay area weekend. the extended forecast is going to get warm. it's going to feel like summer around here. lot of kids out of school for summer -- a lot of the kids out for school for summer. that warms the air and sends it offshore. that will start off tomorrow but sunday is the day you're going to really notice the heat. inland bay valleys you're going to see plenty of 90s. this pattern sets up a clearing situation. so it's going to be nice coast side. the microclimates for saturday not as warm sunday but still nice. 75degrees out toward the berkeley area. you're going to go mid- and upper 70s. and you get into lafayette.
