. today's warm weather combined with the dry conditions help feed a grass fire in the south bay. a happy home coming for a bay area soldier back from afghanistan. and a pilot lands dangerously close to golfers in contra costa county. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news. good evening everyone and thanks for joining us on this special edition of ktvu channel 2 news. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm john sasaki in for ken wayne. we begin this evening with a busy afternoon for san josi firefighters who handled a

grass fire quickly spread along the southbound lanes of highway 87. more than 50 firefighters responded to that blaze. crews stationed some engineers at the top of a nearby hill to protect homes, but none were threatened in the end. >> this is fuels here. the fire event was relatively fast. crews had a hard time to get in front of it to stop the fire. we were able to get it at several breaks, that led to a natural break here and able to contain the fire. >> firefighters tell us that this same area burned last summer after someone threw a lit significant fret a passing car. in oakland power was restores in an area of the hills where a car crash sparked a fire. utility crews had to replace two power lines that were knocked down when an elderly woman rammed into a power poll

awesome. >> it's really indescribable, besides just the relief i'm feeling. what they say about the families, you know? they go through it with the soldiers. he served his country and he was proud and i am proud of him. >> reporter: he says he took seven men to afghanistan and brought seven home, one of many things to be proud of. live in san jose, cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. a shuttered east bay army base could soon be the source of thousands of jobs. oakland homicide detectives are investigating the shooting late this afternoon that left a motorcyclist dead. police were called to the corner of 63rd and albion avenue this afternoon. officers say the motorcyclist was shot at least once in the chest. they have not released the victim's name, but did say he was an 1-year-old 18 -year-old man.

in antioch a graduation party turned violent early this morning when someone opened fire leaving one man dead and another injured. the party was at a home near westth and i streets. police say someone began to shoot at 2:45 this morning. when police arrived they found two men with gunshot wounds. one of them died at scene of the authorities have not released the victims' names and asking anyone with information to give antioch police a call. san rafael police are questioning a young couple after a tense standoff this morning. they got a call from a woman who said her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend were at a motel and that the daughter was being held against her will. three dozen officers and hotchage negotiators responded to the village inn on length avenue and evacuated the east side of the hotel. police say they heard a gunshot and used flash devices to get inside the room. no one was hurt. golfers playing in concord this morning were shocked to see a plane coming in for a

landing just feet from the course. the contra costa sheriff's office says the pilot of that small plane appeared to overshoot the runway, but landed safely on a grassy patch just adjacent to the runway. no one was issued. witnesses say the plane came to rest right next to the putting green, which was packed with golfers waiting to tee off on this beautiful day. the national transportation safety board will now investigate the incident. today was graduation day, but dozens of seniors were not allowed to attend. 51 seniors were band from the banned for a prank. they were punished for vandalizing the high school by running around with paint on their feet and tieing a lamb to a post. we will have your weekend forecast when we come right back.

. it was a gorgeous day in the bay area and it's going to get even warmer, mark tamayo, what is it looking like? >> temperatures starting to warm up and that trend will continue. as we head into the second half of the weekend with the warm- up, the big concern was fire danger. you can see why, already drying out with the hills there and as a result the red-flag warning posted in 6:00 for the delta region. until sunday evening. sunday 6:00 p.m. and red-flag warning for the north bay hills and east bay hills. we have some extremely warm temperaturesle tomorrow will be warmer than today. gusty winds approaching 40-45 miles per hour for the hilltops and also low humidities could be coming down to right around 10% for tomorrow. temperatures tomorrow, about the same as today. actually a little bit warmer in a few spots. the warmest locations on track

. almost 200 people gathered in oakland to lobby for local hiring when the old oakland army base is redeveloped. oakland residents packed the friendship christian center in west oakland. almost 400 million dollars in city, state and federal money has been allocated towards redeveloping the 330 acre lot near the foot of bay bridge. city officials plan to vote on the issue on tuesday. joe fonzi joins us now of the giants are hot. >> they are on a roll. last night was first time that the giants and rangers met since the world series and they had to reid mind the rangers how they felt a year and a half
