. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. fighting flames in the south bay on a day of dry and windy weather and fire conditions will be worse tomorrow. good evening, i'm john sasaki in for ken wayne. >> hello again everyone i'm heather holmes. >> our weather is creating ideal conditions for the spread of fire and a red-flag warning is in effect for the north bay and east bay hills and in the south bay today, crews had their hands full for a time, battling a brush fire that

burned perilously close to home. ktvu's debora villalon in san josi with how today's windows made that fire tricky. >> reporter: heather, it was here along highway 7, this is called light flashy fuel and it does burn in a flash. flames whipped up really fast. this video comes from a resident across the freeway, who started shooting even as engines arrived. startled by how big the flames grew. >> they were at least 20' at one point. and they actually got really close to the firemen themselves. >> crews had a hard time getting in front of it to stop the fire. >> reporter: a hard time because of 20 miles per hour wind gusts. the fire jumped a walking trailheading towards home homes at the top. even with more engines, 50 firefighters and water drops from a helicopter, final acres were blackened between the exit and capital expressway. >> at one time we had several homes in danger and we got fire crews in front of those homes

and we were able to put the fire out. >> it has happened before, so we're not surprised. >> reporter: residents say the same hillside burned last summer. that time lit by a cigarette tossed from a car. this time, cause unknown. fire is enough of a hazard that the homeowners' association put in sprinklers to keep the hill from drying out, but they were capped today and of no help to firefighters either. the george family got stuck in traffic, backed up on 87 and saw the fire engines and realized it was happening again, right next to their home. >> the first time it was pretty scary, because it was a little more widespread than this. but now i think -- and we're hoping because of the road here it won't really come to the houses. >> reporter: no evacuations, but the nearest residents were warned to shelter in place with engines positioned for protection. the south bay has seen a busy start to fire season with this

grass fire and another at the landfill in milpitas also today. we're live in san josi, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on that red-flag warning with video shows very dry and brown grass on mount diablo. the national weather service expects that guidant high temperatures and low humidity is leading to a red-flag warning until 11:00 tomorrow morning. >> the fire was first reported around 7:30 offer boeing drive in hamilton field community. firefighters say the fire never threatened homes. firefighter in other western states have been battling their own fires. the high park fire was spotted in northern colorado. the fire has quickly burned burning an estimated 3,000 acres. fire crews had to trek through ruff terrain to reach flames and people living in dozens of

homes have been told to evacuate. in new mexico's lincoln national forest, a wildfire as forced the evacuation of hundreds. so far at least 20 structures have been left, but it's unclear if they are homes or cabins or outbuildings. firefighters say a lightning strike on monday sparked that fire. in oakland power is now restored in an area where a car crash sparked a brush fire. it is a story we brought to you live throughout the day yesterday. utility crews had to replace two power lines knocked down when an elderly woman struck a power pole with her car yesterday afternoon. sections of interstate 580 were shut down from 11:00 p.m. to just after midnight. those downs power lines set offer a three-alarm, two-acre brush fire. news copter 2 was lie overhead as the flames moved uphill towards homes. police actually evacuated dozens of houses in a nearby

development. about 100 firefighters were called to battle that blaze. no homes were damaged. in firefighters spent the night on the scene, watching for hotspots that could trigger a flare-up. coming up a little bit later at 10:40, cuisinart meteorologist mark tamayo has more on the red-flag warning and how hot it may reach tomorrow. >> a small graduate party in antioch left a man dead. police say gunfire erupted this morning as a small group was leaving. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live in antioch with the selfless act his friends say was doing just before he was shot. >> reporter: at the scene of antioch's most recent shooting there are now balloons, pictures and messages for the man friends call tino. the 21-year-old was shot. >> we were trying to get a response from him and trying to get him to breathe. >> reporter: these women, who did not want

to be identified say a small celebration for recent high school graduates was breaking up outside of their house when two men tried to rob those leaving. that is when they say their friend valentino stepped in. >> he said just put your gun away and we saw the gun and we turned around and ran back to the house and we heart gunpoints. >> reporter: friends say valentino died at the scene. >> i felt his heart slowing down. >> reporter: a second person was shot, but not seriously injured:while police are not ready to discuss other details of the case, these friends of the victims believe someone will come forward with information to track down the people responsible for taking a young man's life. >>you just killed an innocent person, someone everyone loves, i believe in karma, period. >> reporter: eric tells us tonight neighbors say the area has become a

hotspot for shootings and gangs. however, the victim's friend insist he was not inpy probable of his own. tonight three union city teenagers are behind bars involved in a fate shooting out of a karaoke bar. a man was gunned down early yesterday. today police revealed they arrested three men, two 18 years old and a 19-year-old, driving away from the scene. officers say the killing appears to be gang-related. it is san josi's 18th homicide of the year. a tense standoff led to the evacuation of a san rafael motel. police say they received a call from a woman who said her 21- year-old daughter claimed her 23-year-old boyfriend had a gun and would not let her leave their motel room. three dozen officers responded to the villa inn on lincoln avenue. they use a flash-bang device to get inside the room. no one was hurt and so far no arrests a pilot of a small

plane landed feet from the golf course. the contra costa sheriff's office said the pilot appeared to overshoot the run waand glide in on a past of the grass adjacent to the runway. no one was injured. witnesses say that the plane came to rest at the putting green, which was packed with golfers ready to tee off. the national transportation safety board will investigate theincident. witnesses say a plane rolled and turned right before descending into a sharp novdive. another report with the cause of crash is due out. a 29-year-old soldier from the south bay is spending his first night had a very long time at home in his own bed. ktvu's cara liu was at mineta san josi airport as dozens

first reported to you one week ago that sandoval sexually assaulted a woman. he says his focus now is on baseball. another search today in the south bay for missing 15-year- old sierra lamar. volunteers gathered this morning in morgan hill. the teen vanished on her way to school on march 16th. 21-year-old antolin garcia- torres has been arrested and charged with her murder. despite the charges the family is holding out hope she will be found alive. police in san francisco are investigator' shooting that left a man critically wounded. authorities say the gunfire erupted last night. the victim was taken to san francisco general hospital in critical condition. police have not released his name and have not made any arrests. in oakland, police say a young man riding a motorcycle was shot and killed this

afternoon. it happened at about 4:30 near 63rd and albion street. police say the victim is an 18- year-old man. investigators say alcohol does not appear timber a football in to be a factor in a fatal crash. highway patrol says the driver was heading south when veered off the highway and crashed into a tree. it took firefighters about 20 minutes to reach him using the jaws of life. the man's name has not been released. authorities in fresno county say a former indian army officer wanted in a 1996 killing in his native country opened fire on his family before killing himself. the fresno sheriff's office says 47-year-old avatar singh called them this morning to say he had killed four people. when they arrived at the his home, they found singh, his wife and two children, aged 3

. well, as advertised the bay area has warmed up today and that trend continues into sunday. biggest concern with those gusty winds developing right now and also the low humidity, fire danger. as a result a i want to remind you the red-flag barning posted until 11:00 tomorrow morning. take a look at the maps right now. we can show you some of the current numbers. look at those. we're in the 60s and 70s. fairfield right now 75 degrees. that is evidence of that northerly breeze developing, mountain view currently checking in 66 degrees. satellite and radar, all the cloud cover heading it to our north and we have mostly clear skies up and down the california coastline with increasing northerly breeze. that wind will continue to be on the increase tonight into tomorrow morning and we'll have winds gusting to right around
