. a big response and an investigation after a house fire in the east bay, that is the top story. we begin with a large investigation effort underway at the scene of a house fire in livermore. the fire started just after 11:00 last night near shed land

and arabian roads. >> >> reporter: they are sifting through the rubble of what was once the garage and we can get an overhead view to figure out the patterns to see if this fire was deliberately set. it broke out just after 11:00 last night on pal mean know road. here is a shot of the neighbor that lives behind the home. the fire roared through the garage and tore through the rest of the garage. >> we came out and the fire truck came and it was engulfed. it was huge and yellow, and lit up the whole sky and you can hear huge popping noises and the water heater exploded. >> the mother is now at the

hospital and everyone else got out unharmed. the father's legal alcohol level was at normal limit. sources tell us they don't believe it was arson but because the father has not been forthcoming with information crews are making sure they comb through every shred of evidence and this house is a complete loss and neighbors are rallying together to help the family with clothing and other things they will need to get them through. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >> thank you, tara. a house fire in martinez is call suspicious. firefighters rushed to this home on 8th street because of an attic fire. it took almost an hour to get the flames under control. the house was vacant and nobody was injured. they have had a problem with squatters and they believe they may have started the the contra

board warns after major budget cuts were approved. the areas were oakly and some unincorporated areas. they include byron, marsh creek and morgan territory. the cuts come after they rejected a partial tax measure some people say asked for too much. >> so you went for the double or nothing thing and now you lost and now we are all going to pay for it. >> the cost covered three fire stations and a half of the staff is being let go. there are no official flag alerts today but people are still being warned about the fire danger. the dry brown hills are a constant reminder to be careful and in fact the areas normally available for activity are closed because of fire danger. for example there is no public access at a place known for its

trails picnic areas and other playgrounds. that is not the only area off limits. they revoked fire permits for national sea shore in that same area, mt. vision road is also closed because of fire danger and open fires are banned because of the recreation areas. they will have more later in this newscast. and coming up in about ten minutes, farm animals are being used to help prevent fires. they are used goats as an effort to reduce fire danger and find out why one agency will be paying close attention to this project. a dangerous discovery forced the evacuation of the san francisco north beach

neighborhood. they found suspicious activity which all began about 4:00 yesterday when a woman who appeared to be mentally unstable told police she had fired a gun inside her home. officers went and made the disturbing discovery after going inside. >> we found a few semiautomatic weapons answer a sword and some suspicious devices. it was undetermined of what it was but they wanted to err on the side of caution so they used the bomb squad to investigate it. the woman was taken to the hospital for psychiatric investigation. and they are debating in berkeley. allie rasmus joins us live to explain why this issue is causing so much debate. allie? >> reporter: well it is an issue that is being discussed right here at the berkeley city club. the berkeley chamber of

commerce, we will hear from tom bates and some of the opponents have now gathered in front of the building and there is a small group which are getting readied to protest this idea. they are getting ready and they will make their voices heard. mayor bates wants to ban sitting on sidewalks between 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and we have some video of what that will look like. they will consider whether or not to move forward with putting that issue on and the idea is having people sit and camp in front of stores and it is generally bad for business. but critics in front of the business refused. >> am i causing somebody to lose money? no. >> people are shop, shop, shopping. >> but you would not put up

this vote? >> no, i would not because it is harassing the kids. >> reporter: now we contacted mayor bates and here is what he said earlier this month about the need for this no sit ordinance. >> we have lots of places to sit and that's one of the places, we have established all kinds of activities for people to sit, they don't have to sit on the sidewalk. >> reporter: mayor bates and others have pointed out they have one of the highest budgets for homeless resources and other services but at least three have come out against this proposal and they will try to stop it from moving forward. just a little while ago i got a call from one of the mayor bates workers and they say they are having a conference about it at 3:00 this afternoon. >> thank you allie rasmus. >> reporter: allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 morning news. the bart extension will run

through that area and lanes will be closed near cornish lane. also there will be closures on lancaster and the working will last ten days. they are looking to go for a major tunnel project to link chinatown with cal train. there was some confusion as to when the working was expected to begin. they are expecting to begin working next week. it will be near harrison and bryant and it's a subway project that will take six years to finish. they are investigating a crash that caused problems where a car -- two cars ran into each other. several lanes were blocked for more than an hour. nobody was seriously injured

but the backup stretched through hayward and people are talking about the terrible backup after 10:00 a.m. we are learning more about suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. when he first came under investigation he was asked to surrender his guns. investigators say he had three different weapons registered to him however sheriff ross mirkarimi insisted he only had two and they were quote buried deep inside the house. all three guns are being held by san francisco police. in the meantime eliana lopez is calling for mayor ed lee to be questioned over this video. in the tape she carefully shows a neighbor and explained what happened after they had an argument. her attorney has filed an official complaint saying the

video has caused her psychological damage and has now gone viral and is available for everyone to see. that reported odor caused a jet line to come back to the bay area. ahead, what is being said at this hour. and rosemary will tell us what is getting much cooler and they hope to see some of the biggest stars of the gulf.

. a southwest flight was forced to return after a flight attendant reported a strange snell. they return -- smell. they returned to the gate and ten minutes into the flight the flight attendant told the captain that the odor made her feel lightheaded. >> the department is now investigating and they have not yet identified the source of the reported odor. >> the flight attendant was taken to the hospital to be checked out. nobody else smelled the odor.

all 189 passengers were put on another flight to burbank. and the trial continues and it is day two of the trial for jerry sandusky and an 1-year- old witness -- 18-year-old witness tearfully testified he stayed at jerry sandusky's house more than 100 times at a boy. he foundelled and performed oral sex on a number of occasions. he faces 52 criminal counts on 10 boys and denies the allegations. today is the first time on the job and the board voted unanimously to to appoint another person to take over the seat of lockyer. she was not able to care for her young son and serve her constituents while recovering from addiction. and republican challenger mitt romney is facing an event

in orlando florida. he appeared at a town hall meeting with small business owners. next on the schedule, a private fundraiser at a country club and president barack obama will be there for another funds raiser. and president barack obama has a very busy fundraising schedule and tonight the president will be in philadelphia for three more events. both president barack obama and mitt romney are in a fierce battle to stock pile cash now to add time in the fall heading to the november elections. and the federal election commission has decided donations can be made by cell phone text messages. they sent them to a campaign which adds a charge on to the donors cell phone bill. it was used after the earthquake in haiti and text

donations are given each month. it is the hole the size of a basketball and now authorities are trying to determine if it came from an airplane. the homeowner was at home with her young son when they heard a loud boom and the house shook. neighbors were playing basketball outside when it happened. >> we heard the impact and we heard tiles fall to the ground. >> i can't believe ice could make a big hole like that. >> yeah. >> the federal aviation administration were checking to see what planes were in the area at the time. they say the ice was white, not blue which indicates it did not come from an airplanes laboratory. today they will propose a one time exception to the couldn't minutian couldn't -- condominium conversion law. they will pay $20,000 to skip

the conversion lottery. they say that could raise as much as $25 million for the city's opposing fund. it will lead to a loss of rental units. and the heights library has new painting. the original mural was painted in the 1980s but is badly worn. the new mural is expected to be finished in august. right now 150 goats have been placed in walnut creek as part of fire prevention efforts. they may be visible to motorists on interstate 880. 120 sheet will also be -- sheep will also be placed in the area. using animals has been a popular fire prevention effort for years but there is something special about this

with a northwesterly breeze. areas are right around oakland and livermore and a sea breeze will be wrapping up once again and again our cooling trend will continue. in some areas it was hotter at 3:00 than it was at 4:00 because that on shore breeze started to kick in later in the day. 88 in santa rosa and northwesterly in santa rosa. 69 san francisco and oakland. 86 in fairfield and livermore so already quite toasty for the inland areas and look at the satellite radar. the system that moved over north of us helped to bring that on shore breeze which is passing through helping to break down little by little and again, the marine layer is continuing to pool in. today we will notice cooling and then tomorrow, the bigger change will come especially far

there were no vandalism there was no vandalism but some people threw bottles at police officers and some began hitting and kicking, police did try to break up the crowd, one man was hurt and four people were arrested. they just announced a major change that will impact the customers and hospitals are preparing for a labor problem. we will hear details just ahead.

. u.s. stocks are higher and we are covering some of their losses after a federal reserve official stimulated the economy. crude oil has recovered from an 8 month low and taking a look at the dow jones industrial average, 819, nasdaq up 21 and s&p 500 is up 10. jp chase knew about the costs and it cost them dearly. some bank directors had discussions with the chief investment office in curbing london's activities but losing foreign exchange is believed to have come from the foreign office. they were hurt when those
