>> a huge early morning fire in
7:01 am
oakland has created commuter chaos and shut down all service between east bay and san francisco. a live team coverage ahead on mornings on two. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on two. >> good morning to you. i'm dave clark. >> it's thursday, june 14th. we begin with developing news throwing the morning commute into a huge mess. a building fire next to the west oakland station has shut down bart service between oakland and san francisco has its forced thousands commuters to look for other options to get to work. we have live team coverage. we follow the traffic impact. claudine is talking with commuters. first, we are live at the command center. what are they telling you about how long this could last? >> unfortunately, we are in
7:02 am
sort of a holding pattern right now because pg and he has to turn off the main gas line in order for them to get inside. they are tying the fire department amy crews to cool it down in order for them to turn off the gas. we are sort of at a standstill. if you look behind me, you see the water dripping, some hotspots still burning. above me the bart tracks that are melted from the fire and are now shut down. >> this is video you will only see taken by the first unit to respond to the scene on seventh and mandela parkway. it's right near the west oakland bart station. flames shot 150 feet into the air. the fire spread out over two blocks. it raged for a half-hour before crews were able to get a handle
7:03 am
on it. it destroyed a five-story senior center under construction, some cars, street signs, and the bart track. >> there are two main issues. one is the electrical situation. that's a bit complicated, because there are very high voltage lines that we need to make sure our safe to re-energize, and the other is there is to that have been damaged or the fire that are in danger of falling on the tracks. a third agency needs to come and remove those polls. >> this is an overhead view of the scene where hotspots are still visible. no one hurt in the fire but 62 firefighters had to tackle this massive fire turned again, if you need to use bart this morning, there'll be no trains running between oakland and san francisco for hours. the agency is recommending commuters use transit or ferry service because they are scrambling to get a bus shuttle in place. we want to throw a number on
7:04 am
the screen. 510-238-4031. that's the number for fire investigation. they are trying to figure out if this is a case of arson and anyone who noticed any people in the area of seventh street and mandela parkway around 2:00 this morning to give them a call. i live in oakland right now. we had over two c with the roadways are looking like. i can imagine it's a headache. >> it sure is. this morning's commute is really terrible at the bay bridge where a lot of people are just taking their car into san francisco. you can see from the news chopper that this backup extends for a good long time. this is almost as if there has been a major crash on the bridge, but really what it is is people who've heard about the bart system, and they are getting into their cars. that's what a lot of people have had to do. some of those middle lanes for fast track are asking just as the outside lanes, but they're still a big back up that stretches way beyond the macarthur maze and into san francisco. on the bridge, it actually is not all that bad. a little bit of crowding, but the
7:05 am
backup getting to the bridge is very slow. i want to check out the other side. san francisco northbound 101 traffic looks good. so far, there's heavy traffic on the san mateo bridge, but unfortunately getting there on 880 is very slow. and i also want to mention there's a crash on 37 and 29 that has low traffic on 37 in the eastbound direction right there. i want to move the maps all the way down to the south bay just to check on the south bay here. we are off to a decent start. so the south may not having as much wear and tear on it because of this bart situation. it is 7:05. let's go to an alternate route. that is a bust to san francisco. claudine long is in downtown oakland with some long lines. >> absolutely. this bus is actually headed to san francisco, but when it pulled up to this line of people waiting, there were already quite a few people on board which makes it very
7:06 am
difficult for any of these folks to get on board. how long have you been standing here quick. >> 45 minutes. >> i just knew. >> what time are you normally in the 7:00. >> 7:00. >> i'm at work at a quarter to 7 :00. >> what time did you get to the bart station quick. >> 6:05. >> i heard it on the radio. they said to get off on macarthur or 19 to get a bus. this is the second bus we will not get on and it's been how long. >> 45 minutes to an hour. >> you are in better shape. i want to take you all the way down and around this corner, because people are starting to get a little frustrated. an hour and only two buses. take a look at that line. that stretches all the way down broadway. it just keeps on going. i see another bus actually headed in our direction. the third bus, so maybe these buses are getting a little bit better to let because we've been waiting
7:07 am
a long time. the supervisor out here was asked how long until the buses start coming regularly, and she says she just doesn't know. they are trying to work the buses in and around the area to get these folks into the city. keep in mind, these buses hold about 50, maybe 60 people if you are lucky. when you talk about a line like this, we are thinking maybe 10, 15 buses of people that you have to get out of here. it looks like this bus that we are looking at, the other one was full, but this looks like it's empty which will be a big relief for the folks here. we talk about the open, those people that are maybe a little extra traffic. there are some people appear that we just pass we didn't get to talk to. this one is empty, right-click. >> yes! >> and you are going to the open. it came from davis. >> we left at 4:45 a.m. >> you've got your passes, you just need to get there. >> yeah. >> i'm going to get out of your
7:08 am
way. again, this is only the third bus we've seen this morning since these problems started. these folks want to get on this bus. they want to get into the city. it looks like they'll have more seats on this bus, but seats already taken. i asked that supervisor where else people are getting on, they are getting on the 12th. it is going to be a very, very, very long commute this morning. live in oakland, claudine wong. >> certainly it will be. great job. we will check back for updates throughout the morning. we will return to the fire scene for a live update. also, we will check traffic because there may be other impacts on other parts of the road as people try to find other ways to get across the bay. we will also be checking on how transit is helping commuters this morning. we will have the latest on our website. you can also get more information that will be sent to your mobile device at ktvu.com. >> time is 7:08.

7:19 am
from bart. they say that partial service will be restored by this afternoon, and they are hoping for full service by 5:00 tonight. that just came across from a bart spokesman to us, so they are working as fast as they can. meanwhile, the bart service is not working between san francisco and the east they and the other way around. let's go to macarthur maze. traffic is very slow at the bay bridge this morning, because of this. you will see that traffic is very, very slow all the way to the bay bridge toll plaza. also this morning, the san mateo bridge -- the san mateo little bit busier than normal getting across the peninsula. not all that bad, but you will see more people on it. likewise for the dunbar bridge. >> fog is burning off sooner and cool to mild to warm to hot depending on your location. if you don't have seabreeze, it will be hot. the big news will be on saturday when the wind turns north northeast. of rapid warm-up into the

7:21 am
7:22 am
7:23 am
>> 7:22. continuing coverage on the developing news. an early morning fire at a construction site has turned into a commuter nightmare right now. this was at a senior center under construction closed in the west oakland bart station. so right now bart service is shut down across the bay. it's important to mention that bart is still running in the east bay and in the west they. you just cannot travel between oakland and san francisco. that's causing a lot of problems. claudine wong is live at the 19th part station where a lot of people are waiting to be shuttled into san francisco. waiting a long time. >> they are. these buses are coming in a regular fashion. some of them, and are full. i want to give you a look at
7:24 am
the situation here. that's the front of the line. i want you to look at where this line goes, because the look on peoples faces when they see the end of this line is unbelievable. take a look as it goes all the way down the block, as far as our eyes can see. that line keeps growing as people head over here trying to get a bus into san francisco. i want to talk to this gentleman. you are not actually even in- line. when you walked up your, what did you think? >> i'm trying to get to work in the city and i'm actually in line. >> where is your place? >> i'm all the way at the end. >> you were taking pictures. >> so my boss will believe me. it's pretty epic areas; do you think it's going to take? >> i'm going home. >> at least you can do that. good luck to you. all of the rest of these folks are trying to be patient as they wait to see if they are going to make it. i can tell you, we been here
7:25 am
before 6:30 and we have seen six -- seemed three buses come. a lot of these buses that have been coming have them full. i talked to the supervisor out here. she said they buses are coming from other locations, picking up people here, trying to squeeze as many people in if they can't, but obviously it's very difficult. the folks waiting here will just have to keep on waiting until they get enough buses to bring them in. the good news is, some of these people live in talking to are worried about getting in and worried about getting home. it looks like they may be able to get home if bart does restore service like they were going to buy this evening, but that does remain to be seen. the line just continues to grow. literally, people keep coming across the street and getting in line. how long it will take is just impossible to say because we've been watching and waiting. two buses in our last report and we
7:26 am
haven't seen a bus students. so buses will be through here trying to get people to their destinations. it's not happening quickly. people getting a little frustrated out here. >> like i said, the line is epic. >> is unbelievable. it keeps growing and growing. >> it might be good just to call it a day. thank you. continuing coverage of the story throughout mornings on 2. coming up, a witness in the fire zone where this all started. what he saw and heard. >> time now is 7:26. sal, u.n. news chopper 2 are going to try to help them as much as possible. >> i even tried to go to the east a fairy website, and their site has crashed that i think a lot of people had that inclination. i go to the space fairy online and it's just not letting me bring it up. i tried on several computers, so i think they are probably having

7:32 am
you see that firefighters are clearly how -- are clearly aware how close this was to the west tracks and the bart station. flame shooting high into the air. estimates of 150 feet into the air from firefighters and a ton of thick black smoke. a senior apartment conference was under construction here. the 120 unit project was in the framing stages. investigators are looking to see a farce and is to blame. meanwhile, witnesses tell us the explosions they heard thunder like gunshots. >> around 2:20 this morning, i was asleep and i heard a big explosion. i looked out my front door and didn't see nothing, but by the time i got back to the van, i started hearing all arms and got back up again and saw flames shooting straight in the air. >> again, no service -- bart service -- from oakland to san francisco. bart is hoping to get everything up and running by this evening, but there's no service right now because this fire caused damage
