been restored. here is the fire that started the problems this morning. these are pictures from the first responders. we have live team coverage from every angle, the repairs and the number of ways people are trying trying to get home tonight. ktvu's tom vacar sin west oakland -- is in west oakland. tom? >> reporter: look up here. the thing that is interesting, this was impressive for speed and lucky for its circumstances. >> reporter: there is only one reasons the repairs could proceed thought engineers determined the heat didn't compromise the over pass. it was a few feet away from where the blaze raged. heat can compromise such structures. >> the oakland fire department got the fire out quickly enough. it did not create damage to the

rails on which the train runs. we did suffer electrical damage. the repairs were done with speed. a small army of engineers, technicians and maintenance workers worked to replace the insulators to ensure it wouldn't short out. badly burned cabling necessary to control the train system was replacedplaced and rewired. the computer controls and censors may not be fully up and running, forcing trains to go slower. >> what the goal is to get the service up and running safely. that doesn't mean we replace everything that was damaged, we want to make sure the communication is safe. >> reporter: those the track is open more work will take place

over night when bart closes for the night. reporting live, consumer editor tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. >> from tom to ktvu's david stevenson that powell street bart stationen san francisco where commuters are getting on trains to get home. >> reporter: full service with bart has been back in effect for 2 hours now. travel here has been moving smoothly. word went out this afternoon that service to the east bay was back in effect. here you see the first trains that started transporting. anxiety prompts customers to make big changes. >> this morning when i was watching the 4:00 news we heard about the bart situation and we had to leave the house at 8:00

because we didn't know about the traffic situation. >> hour-1/2 -- hour and a half late to work today. >> late for our friend's graduation. >> reporter: bart says to expect delays through the evening. many commuters indicated they would be making emergency plans to get home tonight if service wasn't restored. but at this hour traffic appears to be moving smoothly. reporting live, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> from david to ktvu's rob roth at the transbay terminal where -- how are things? how have things changed? >> reporter: things are going smoothly at the transbay terminal. you barely see commuters trying

to board buses. this is where people board buses to take them to the east bay but there are not lines of people right now. they weren't sure if bart would be up and running so they added 20 additional buses. the move appears to have paid off. earlier today was more chaotic. buses were slower in coming, people had longer waits and passengers were used to bart and the buses were not sure where to go. >> the bus will be here in a second. >> take this bus. >> should have more buses out here. you know, on the route. >> reporter: finally the buses started coming and they have been coming every since. this is a live picture of the transbay terminal. we haven't seen effects from the giants game or from olympic

club. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. >> now let's check in with janine de la vega at the ferry building in san francisco. one of the alternatives commuters are choosing tonight. >> reporter: things are running smoothly here that san francisco ferry terminal. these are people waiting. there is about 70 to 100 people waiting to go from san francisco to oakland and harbor bay. now that bart is running traffic has dropped here. this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. lines started building with commuters who wanted to avoid the crowds. they are running three boats. by 5:15 the crowds started shrinking here. >> not too bad. lucky that we have ferry terminals to get in and out of san francisco. another way of transportation.

you know, instead of battling the traffic on the bay bridge. >> reporter: they will continue operating additional ferries from san francisco to harbor bay till 7:30 p.m. tonight and san francisco to oakland till 8:30 p.m. tonight. and again, ferries are coming here every 35 minutes. lines have been moving well here. reporting live from san francisco, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and from the ferries to the road conditions. sal castaneda has been in the traffic center since 4:30 a.m. this morning. >> reporter: they have to get their cars back from san francisco across the bay. 101 hasn't gotten better. usually on a normal commute day by now we are seeing improvement but today there are too many cars in san francisco.

let's look at the next picture, that would be 880 south. that looks normal. and you want to get out of san francisco to the east bay, considering using 100 -- consider using 101 south bound to the san mateo bridge. not that bad heading eastbound. now back to the desk. >> the dig question remains, what started the fire that through a wrench into the commute. ktvu's christien kafton is live. >> reporter: we have been working to determine the cause of the fire all day, that incloouds trying to -- includes trying to find out the inspection records. the last time the building was inspected was june 12, two days ago. at this point there is no word on whether or not the building passed or failed. again the latest information is

that this building was inspected two days ago. investigators believe the fire started at the far end of the building this morning and that is where their investigation is centered. and we have been hearing rumors that a security guard may have had an altercation with a group of people. police responded to our inquiries about that in an e- mail. it read: based on information provided at this time it does not appear an assault appeared this morning at that location. what it does not address is whether there was a verbal altercation here between the guard and the group of individuals. we have seen a lot of bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives on the scene here and seen investigators from oakland fire department on scene working to determine the cause of the fire. >> is is a joint -- it is a

twitter or facebook. we have a closer look at the repair job that bart engineers have been working on all day. this is video of west oakland. 400 feet was damaged. the two rails are what trains sits up. that is where the fire damaged insulators. they be been working to repair those because they provide electrical currents. they house 1,000 votes of electricity. full service has been restored. 52 trains are running. that is normal exot -- capacity for bart. good news for the commute. assessment of oakland's handling of occupy protesters. ktvu's rita williams has more
