welcome to mornings on 2. i'm john sasaki in for mike mibach. >> it's going to be a hot day. let's check in for your forecast. we're looking at triple digits. >> some areas going to reach 100 degrees, even slightly above. the hottest day so far this year for many of us. we do have high fire danger out there for lake county, including napa and sonoma. for lake county it will last all day. the winds are gusting to 40 miles per hour. at the peaks this morning, and the humidity is low. at this hour our numbers are 5 to 10 degrees warmer than where we sat yesterday at this time. we'll take a look at your current conditions coming up. >> we begin this morning with a quadruple shooting in oakland. a few hours ago, someone opened fire. all the victims may have come from the same family.

>> that's true, family and friends have been gathering out here all morning while police try to figure out what happened. you can see they're conducting interviews as we speak out here. the street is closed off on 28th avenue while police wait for the coroner to arrive. the men were drinking and hanging out when someone opened fire. three of the victims were transferred to highland hospital. one man died on scene. it happened before 4 a.m. on 28th and east 18th street. someone drove up and another person got out of the car, walked up, and started shooting. she tells us her 4 family members are not involved in any criminal activity. >> i'm positive it's not gang members. >> oakland police tells us two of the victims are in stable condition this morning. one

victim is undergoing emergency surgery. the sergeant says it's too early to point to a motive. he says investigators will be out here most of the day. >> for the second time in three days, a big building under construction in the bay area has gone up in flames. alllie rasmus joins us live from san francisco to show us this project was a complete loss. >> that's right, john. the building that burn ed was part of a san francisco housing project under construction. it was four stories high before this early morning fire. now you can see the back of the building is burnt down completely to the foundation, and the scaffolding is the only thing still standing. the fire started at 4:00 this morning. no one was actually living in this building. no one is displaced. investigators are trying to figure out how this fire started and they needed some help from the city's water department in getting the resources to put this fire out. because this is

a newer construction site, it doesn't have a lot of its own fire hydrants. the water department had to turn off some of the valves in area and help the firefighters get enough water to put the fire out. residents were the first to call 911 when they saw the smoke and flames. >> i could see it in the sky, called 911 right away. i knew it was a construction site. those go really well. once they ges going they take off. it's all wood framing at this point. >> this is the glow in the sky residents reported seeing. the flames were visible from across the city at 4:00 this morning. this is a view from one of our highway cameras on 101. back out here live, the fire chief says firefighters will remain out here to keep an eye on hot spots. i asked him about the increase for fire danger because of the warm weather today. he said because the fire site is so close to the bay, there's still a lot of moisture in the air at

this part of the city so they're not too worried about the fire flaring up but they'll keep an eye on it anyway. >> this fire broke out at the north park apartments at cadillac way in burlingame. the first call came after 11:00 last night. they asked for additional crews. the fire started on the top floor and gutted two apartments. 25 other units sustained water or smoke damage. no one was injured. 50 people have been displaced. >> if f -- firefighters are still watching the area closely. it started in a dry grass area yesterday afternoon around 3:00 between 680 in alameda county. here's the view from news chopper 2. crews from cal fire surround the 300-acre fire. a truck hit a phone line and they believe that caused nearby power

lines to ignite the dry grass. people at a nearby tree nursery say they watched it happen. >> it went off just like that. everything went dead in the office. >> it's going to be warm over the weekend. still going to be dry. we're expecting windy conditions. very important to be careful with fire. >> crews have stayed out all night as a precaution. no homes were threatened. >> one of the san francisco firefighters killed in a house fire last year will be honored today. vince perez. the school is hold ing an event today to raise money for a scholarship made in perez's name. donations can be made to the firefighter's union local 798. >> oakland's lake view elementary school is one of five oakland schools being closed because of budget cuts. the 300 students will be sent to other

campuses next year. most of the 14 teachers are also being sent elsewhere. some are choosing to retire early. >> i was really disillusioned with the district and all that's gone on this year. we've fought very hard to keep the schools open to no avail. >> yesterday around noon, parents had a rally in support of lake view, then the demonstration quickly became a sit-in. they set up tents and camping equipment. they say they're prepared to stay on the site indefinitely. there's also a protest today to mark the completion of a controversial project at a vallejo park. it's being staged by the same activists who camped out at the glen cove water park last year. they're protesting the project because there's an ancient burial ground. protesters are upset about trees that were taken out. >> new this morning, the president is urging congress to

know so far. >> john, police have 28th avenue blocked off right now while they conduct interviews and they try to figure out what happened. you can see the coroner is on scene right now. we talked with family members out here. they tell us it's tough. one of their loved ones is dead and three other relatives are in the hospital. those three men were transferred to the highland hospital. the shooting happened just before 4 a.m. near 28th avenue and east 16th street. the men were drinking and hanging out when someone opened fire. a family member says someone drove up and another person got out of the car, walked up, and started shooting. she tells us her family was not involved in any gangs. she thinks a verbal fight led to the violence. >> i think they were asking for something, or i don't know. >> police tell us two of the victims are in stable condition. one victim is undergoing

emergency surgery. the sergeant says it's too early to point to a motive. he says the investigators will be out here for much of the day. >> a san francisco housing project construction site burned to the ground early this morning and the flames could be seen across the city. allie rasmus joins us live from hunter's point to show us what happened. >> in the last 15 points or so we've seen construction workers show up at the site to assess the damage. you can see them wearing their orange vests off in the distance there. the building that burnt down was one of two buildings under construction for a housing project here in san francisco. the building we're talking about is just to our left. you can see the wood game is still standing in the front of the building. in the back it's burnt down to the foundation. all that's left in the back is the scaffolding there. the fire started at 4:00 this morning. no one was hurt and no one was living in the building. investigators are trying to find

out how the fire started and the for firefighters out here, they did need help to get water to the site. the city's water department had to help the fire department get water to put out this fire. >> that size of the fire requires a large volume of water. it's a difficult challenge. we had to have the fire department come out and give us a hand. >> the fire could be seen from miles away. this was the view from one of our highway cameras on 101. there were residents in the area who called to report the smoke and flames and described it as a glow in the sky. the battalion chief says the fire department will be out here to keep an eye on any hot spots. i asked them if the warm weather today was a factor and increasing the fact that those hot spots could flare up again. he said because this construction site is so close to the bay and there's a lot of moisture in the air, they're not too worried about the fire flaring back up again but

they'll keep an eye on it throughout the day. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> marijuana, guns , and cash. those were some of the items seized during an oakland raid yesterday. a gps device from a stolen item led them there. one person was arrested. police are still investigating and looking for more suspects. >> the california pizza kitchen in walnut creek could reopen tonight after a recent outbreak of the noro virus. 20 people contracted the virus after a graduation party on june 7th. one of the employees making salads that day was sick and spread it to customers and workers. >> there was a lack of personal hygiene from one of the workers, not any handwashing. there is a recommendation you have bleach to clean with the rags and they had none of that. >> every service will be sanitized and steam cleaned. the employees are being

victims were men. one died. two are in stable condition and one in emergency surgery. the victims all belong to one family. >> i'm possible they're not gang members because they're really old. i'm pretty sure they're not gang members. >> the relative believes some type of argument led to the shooting. >> a large fire destroyed a housing project under construction. the fire broke out at about 4:00 in hunter's point in san francisco. the only thing still standing is the scaffolding. all the metal frames provided plenty of fuel. >> once they get going, they take off because there's nothing to stop them. it's all wood framing at this point. >> this is the second time in three days a big building under construction has burned down in

the area. the last one in oakland on thursday damaged the electrical system leading to a half-day shutdown of the transit. >> a fire broke out at the north park apartments at caroline avenue. firefighters asked for additional crews. the fire started on the top floor and gutted two apartments. no one was injured. as many as 50 people have been displaced. >> a wild fire is fully contained this morning. firefighters scrambled to contain the fire in alameda county. there's a view from news chopper 2 of the area. cal fire surrounded the fire. a truck hit a phone line and that might have caused power lines to spark and ignite the dry

calabers avenue. >> a group of parents are camping out at oakland's lake view elementary school. it's one of 5 oakland schools being closed because of budget cuts. students will be sent to other schools. most of the 14 teachers will also be sent elsewhere. some are choosing to retire early because they're frustrated with the situation. >> i was really disillusioned with the district and all that has gone on this year. we fought very hard to try to keep the schools open to no avail. >> yesterday around noon a group of parents held a rally in support of lake view elementary. that demonstration quickly became a sit-in as they set up tents and camping equipment. they stay they'll stay indefinitely until the district takes their feelings in to consideration. there's also a protest today to mark the completion of a controversial project out of vallejo park. they will protest

superior court judge paul seeman was arraigned yesterday on 12 felony counts. he's accused of stealing from his berkeley neighbor after obtaining power of attorney. he's expected to enter a plea july 3rd. >> thomas kinkade's girlfriend claims he left his mansion and money to her. a judge disagreed and a probate hearing is set for july 2nd. kinkade died at his home in april. religious leaders want to turn an old army base in oakland in to a job center for prison inmates. >> when you tie someone's hands and don't allow them to do something legal, then you kind of force them back in to something that's undignified, whether it's pan handling or selling dope. >> the muslim clergy and leaders organized the rally and

home yesterday and what they see. >> dozens of people are forced out of their homes after a fire in burlingame.

>> dozens of people on the peninsula are forced out of their homes after an apartment building caught fire. >> dozens of firefighters roned to the -- responded to the scene in burlingame last night. >> this is the third apartment fire in the san mateo county area in the past 10 days.

they're concerned about finding enough hotel space to put up the displaced residents. this caught fire after 11:00 last night. this is the north park apartment complex building. it appears to have started on the third floor where you can see visible damage around the windows up there. since last night, the red cross has been out here. they've set up a staging area of sorts in the front office. they have a hot line they're referring people to who may have been affected by the fire. they tell me there are 60 residents displaced by the fire. let's show you video from last night when firefighters were here. investigators don't know what sparked the fire but it appears to have started on the third floor. two units were completely engulfed in flames, and again there is smoke and water damage in the rest of the building. that's why there are 60 people displaced. the red cross says they're a bit concerned.

this is the third apartment fire they've had to deal with in the last 10 days. the red cross spokesperson told me they're concerned they're running out of hotel space to put up the displaced residents. because burlingame is close to the freeway, because of the u.s. open, and graduations this weekend, there isn't a lot of vacancy in the area. they say if there's another apartment fire they may need to consider opening a shelter. a lot of the residents displaced have renter's insurance so that covered the cost for them to find other places to stay. so they're not too worried about finding other places for people affected by this fire, but red cross warning that if there is another apartment fire in the next 24 to 48 hours they may need to open up a shelter. allie rasmus, ktvu eyewitness news. >> a stolen gps device led officers to a home yesterday.

one person was arrested and another was questioned overnight. police are investigating and looking for more suspects. >> health officials hope a gas leak will fully dissipate by later today. yesterday a tank ruptured in rodeo. the gas isn't harmful in low doses but it does put off a rotten egg smell which can cause nausea and headaches. >> i closed the window right away. >> they say the nearby city got 300 calls from concerned residents who also noticed the smell there. people with respiratory problems are being advised to stay indoors for now. the company says it regrets any problems the leak may have had for people in the area. >> california pizza kitchen in walnut creek is being heavily

sanitized after a recent outbreak of the noro virus. the health department confirmed at least 20 people contracted the virus on june 7th. they say one of the employees making salads that day was sick and spread it to workers. >> there was a lack of hygiene, not any handwashing and there's a requirement you have a good sanitizer like bleach to clean the rags and they had none of that. >> the restaurant could reopen tonight but only after every surface is steam cleaned. the employees are being retrained on how to handle food. there will be more surprise inspections at that location. >> the $92 billion spending plan is still a work in process. the legislature quickly passed 7 budget bills last night, but there's no agreement with the governor. lawmakers sent the main budget bill to the governor to avoid losing pay and expense

money. >> this plan is yet another smoke in mirrors, gimmick-filled imbalanced fraud. >> going to ask the controller and treasurer also of california to take a look at the budget at any time before the governor would get ahold of it and see if it's truly balanced. >> democrats say there are about a dozen adjoining bills they hope to pass next week. here's a quick look at the budget. it includes cuts to courts and various state departments. republicans and democrats could not agree on welfare cuts such as the welfare to work program. >> the wreckage of a fishing boat that sank almost a year ago has been found. last year over the 4th of july weekend, they were on a boat during a storm

and the ship sank. they spent 16 hours swimming to shore. >> a regular fisherman came over and picked me up. i think he was an american. they were down in this area and they picked me up. i can't begin to tell you how happy i was to see this boat come. >> this week they learned a deep sea diver had found the wreckage of the ship. they believe the bodies of their 7 friends are still inside because the crew abandoned ship and never woke them up. the body of a 17-year-old boy has been recovered from clear lake. on thursday the boy was swimming with friends near lake shore drive when they say he suddenly disappeared. his body was found yesterday by a dive team. he was developmentally disabled and suffered from epilepsy. >> the oakland police department is looking for whoever stole a fixture at children's fairyland. the ugly duckling statue was stolen from

there is major backup on interstate 80 in emeryville, eastbound. here's a look at the backup. it's due to a croosh near powell street. a vehicle hit the center divider and overturned. lanes are currently blocked and a tow truck is on its way. chp says the crash caused minor injuries. in overnight news, a large fire destroyed a housing project under construction. the fire broke out around 4:00 at a housing project that was being built at hunters point in san francisco. the only thing left standing after that fire was out is pretty much the scaffolding. all the wood framing for the construction project provided plenty of fuel for the flames, which lit up the sky overnight with an orange glow. >> that size of a fire requires a large volume of water, so it's a very difficult challenge. we had to have the water department come out and give us a hand and shut down mains to provide more pressure. >> this is the second time in three days a building under construction has burned down in the area. the last one in oakland on thursday damaged bart's electrical system leading to the

half-day shutdown of the transbay tube. an apartment building on the peninsula caught fire late last night, leaving many without a home. allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: this is the third apartment fire in 10 days. it happened in san mateo county. the red cross says it's putting a little strain on their resources, especially when it comes to finding alternate housing for those displaced by the fires. the fire happened at the northpark apartment building, just after 11:00 last night. it started in the third story building. you can see a lot of damage is still visible. there was black soot completely around the balcony and the window. one of the residents who lives in this complex showed us video he took of these flames. this is it pouring out of the third story apartment building. you can see chunks of debris on fire falling from the window. fortunately, no one was hurt in this fire, but the building does have a lot of damage. 60 residents have been displaced by this fire, because of not only the fire itself, but the

smoke and water damage and putting it out. the man who captured this video came running out of his building after he heard neighbors calling for help. >> lot of people screaming and yelling and i go down there and i start to see the fire growing really intense, really fast. >> reporter: the red cross in san mateo county says they are concerned they are running out of motel rooms to put some of those displaced residents. again, this is the third apartment fire in the last 10 days in this county. 15 displaced residents in this apartment building spent the night in the clubhouse. the others did have renters insurance, we're told, so they found their own places to stay. that is alleviating some of the concern for now. but the red cross spokeswoman we talked to says if there is another apartment fire in the next couple of days, they may have to open up a shelter, because a lot of the motels, because of the u.s. open, graduations, all types of events happening this weekend, lot of those motels that they usually use are booked. allie rasmus, ktvu, channel 2news.

oakland police tell us they will spend the day at the scene of a quadruple shooting. it happened in the area of 28th avenue and east 16th in the city's fruitvale neighborhood. all four victims were men, all from the same family. one person died, two others in stable condition, another in emergency surgery. a relative believe some type of argument led to the shooting. officers say it's still too early to know the motive. this morning, a group of protesters are waking up at oakland's lakeview elementary school. lakeview is one of five oakland schools being closed because of budget cuts. the school's 300 students will be sent to other schools in the fall. most of the 14 teachers are also being sent elsewhere, but some are choosing to retire early out of frustration with the situation. >> i was really disillusioned with the district and all that has gone on this year. we fought very hard to try to keep the schools open, to no avail. >> yesterday around noon, the group of parents held a rally in support of lakeview elementary.

the demonstration quickly became a sit-in, as they set up tents and camping equipment. they say they are prepared to stay there indefinitely. san francisco is the epicenter of the golf world this weekend. thousands of people are flocking to the olympic club for the u.s. open. and lorain blanco joins us now live, just minutes before round 3 begins. >> reporter: well, this is just a gorgeous day for golf out here in san francisco. this is day 3. just a few minutes, some of the best golfers in the world will tee off for the u.s. open. we are live at west more high school, looking down on the olympic club. this is where employees and media park to get shuttled over to the event. of course one of the biggest draws is, of course, tiger woods, who is in a three-way tie for the lead. the championship golfers, all 1 under par, the rest of the field is over par. many pros call this a difficult course and a brutal test of golf. fans tell us it's an amazing event at a top notch venue. now, if you're going to the u.s.

open today, no parking is allowed. if you're driving, you can park for free at candlestick park. a free shuttle will then take you over to the olympic club. now, if you want to take bart there, go to the coleman station. a free bus will take you to the event from there. you can also take muni by using the number 18 bus. back out here live, tiger tees off at 3:05 this afternoon, when the biggest crowds are of course expected. according to the u.s. golf association, this event brings in 140 to $170 million to the bay area economy. we'll have more for you on that, coming up later in the hour. for now, reporting live in daly city, lorain blanco, channel 2news. we are under red flag fire warning for high fire danger. calfire is still at the scene of a wildfire in sonoma. the fire broke out about 3:00 yesterday afternoon, between i-680 and the sunol regional wilderness in alameda county. news chopper 2 was there. a pg&e worker said a truck hit a

phone line on calaveras road and believe that caused nearby power lines to arc and ignite the grass. people at a nearby tree nursery say they watched it happened. >> it happened just like that. i was working on the computer and everything went dead. >> it's going to be warm over the weekend, still dry. we're still expecting some windy conditions, very important to be careful with fire. >> that fire did not threaten any homes. an event will be held today to honor the memory of one of the san francisco firefighters killed while fighting a house fire last year. lieutenant vincent perez was a graduate of san francisco's archbishop reardon high school. the school will hold an event today to raise money for a scholarship fund in perez' name. tickets are sold out, but donations in lieutenant perez' honor can be made to firefighters local 798. a former fremont resident is getting $21 million in punitive damages in a church abuse settlement. the 26-year-old was molested when she was a young girl. she says elders at the kingdom

about moving this country forward, and i hope members of congress will join me. >> in his weekly address, president obama said congress must pass his entire jobs bill. he says it will create more than a million additional jobs with state tax grants to hire firefighters, teachers and police officers. he says this economic recovery is a make or break moment for the middle class. a group of protesters spent the past few days at president obama's campaign office in downtown oakland. they were demanding that he expand that executive order to stop deportations of all young illegal immigrants. some of the protesters say they are undocumented students themselves who have lived in the u.s. since they were children. their sit-in began thursday. they left early this morning. it was part of a nationwide effort to disrupt campaign offices. president obama's executive order will benefit nearly a million undocumented students. >> this is a temporary stop gap measure that let's us focus our resources wisely, while giving a degree of relief and hope to

tour this morning through the key battle ground state of pennsylvania. two hours ago, he visited a casting and machine company. romney is targeting small conservative cities and towns in pennsylvania. the five-day, six-state bus tour is intended to challenge the president in states where he's strong. one of the men who kidnapped a bus load of california bus children will soon walk free. the california department of corrections says it will release shown felt this month. he spent more than 35 years in prison, for burying the children alive in a truck in livermore. he and three men had planned to demand a $5 million ransom for their release. the victims eventually escaped. john lubers received 50 years to life in a shooting death. in february last year, luber's disagreed with the principal over the school's choice for a new night janitor.

after an argument, lubers went home, returned with a gun and shot lakara. he died later at the hospital. a judge accused of stealing more than a million dollars from an elderly woman is free on $525,000 bail. court judge was -- accused from stealing from his berkeley neighbor after assuming power of attorney. he is expected to enter a plea on july 3rd. a sacramento pastor has died after being infected with flesh-eating bacteria. she died on tuesday after a six-month battle with the illness. the rare disease is typically contracted through a minor cut and then the tissue-killing toxins spread through the body. san francisco general hospital is putting out a photo of one of its patients in the hopes someone can identify her. hospital officials say this woman, known as jane doe, is an older asian woman, and does not appear to be homeless. she suffered traumatic brain injuries and broken bones after

being hit by a car. >> we're doing everything we can to save her life, but we don't know what she would want and we would hope that a family member could help and guide us that way. >> the woman was struck crossing van nest avenue about 11:30 last thursday night. police did arrest the driver for dui. jane doe is believed to be in her seventhys. she has gray hair and brown eyes. oakland police say the ugly duckling statue was stolen from the play house at fairyland. you can see the empty space there. the staff at fairyland is hoping to find the blue bird you see on the left, but they really tell us they just want that statue back, want to find the thief, but want the bird back. facebook stock closed with a gain for the week. it climbed 6.1% to close at 30.01 yesterday. the stock's opening price, if you remember, was $38. meantime, facebook's chief technology officer has announced

he'll leave the company, because he's going to go work on a startup. facebook is blaming nasdaq for its disastrous initial public offering. technical glitches delayed trading when facebook went public on may 18th n investors filed more than 40 lawsuits since. the glitches contributed to the sharp drop in its stock price, according to facebook. a controversial new bridge will be built between canada and the u.s., stretching from detroit to windsor, canada. more than $350 million worth of goods travel through the area every day. there is a bridge already there. most drivers use the ambassador bridge, but it's a privately-owned span built in 1929. the billionaire owner has been fighting the new project. the new bridge will be built, but the canadian government is now covering the entire cost. the new bridge should be finished in five years. a seventh generation tight rope walker is now the first person to make it across niagara falls. check it out! this was last night, as nik wallenda made that slow walk

across that tight rope, roughly the size of his wrist. it took 30 minutes for him to walk 1800 feet from the u.s. to canada. now, during that walk, wallenda was tethered to a rope. that was the first time he's ever agreed to do that, but that was at the insistence of his sponsors, because no one wanted to see him fall. wallenda says the wind and mist from the falls were the biggest challenges of the night and says it took a lot of concentration, training and prayers. well, a hayward company is being credited for helping him cross safely, those falls. his family monitored the wind speed, the temperature, and other variables with a vantage pro 2 wireless weather station, and that is manufactured in hayward by davis instruments. wallenda's father ben communicated any critical information to his son throughout the walk. the company says it's honored wallenda's family chose to use its product. time now, 9:22. marijn county man is starting the world's toughest bike race

. dozens of people on the peninsula are forced out of their homes overnight when their apartment fire caught fire. >> we do have new amateur video of the late night apartment fire in burlingame. it's a fire that has forced dozens of tenants to look for a temporary place to stay. ktvu's allie rasmus is live at the northpark apartments in burlingame. >> reporter: well, this is the third apartment fire in san mateo county in the last 10 days. the red cross says it is putting a little bit of a strain on their resources, especially when it comes to finding alternate housing for the people forced out of their homes.

a total of 660 people were displaced from the fire last night, northpark apartment complex in burlingame. the fire appears to have started on the third floor, right where you see the damage still very visible. windows and balcony people is burnt out and there's soot around it. one of the residents here showed us this video he took of the flames last night. you can see the flames pouring out of that third story apartment. you can actually see chunks of debris on fire falling from the window. no one was hurt in this fire. but the building did sustain a lot of damage. again, 60 people have now been forced out of their homes because of the fire, smoke and water damage. the man who captured this video says he came out running and called 911 when he heard his neighbors calling for help. >> heard a lot of people screaming and yelling. i go down there and start to see the fire go really intense really fast. >> reporter: the san mateo county red cross says they are running short on motel rooms for people displaced by fires. this is the third fire in the county in the last 10 days. some of the motels the red cross

usually works with in this area are already booked. >> the u.s. open, graduations, different conferences, somebody said something about an apple conference, but frankly in this county, we do have trouble finding hotel and motel rooms a lot of the time. i think we just have a pretty high occupancy rate. >> reporter: now, of the 60 people displaced, 15 of them spent the night in the clubhouse of this apartment complex. and inside that clubhouse right now, there are red cross workers, working with the property management company, trying to find alternate housing for them. the other people displaced, the 45 others, were able to find other places to stay. so the red cross says they are not concerned about running out of motel rooms for the people affected by this fire, but their concern is, if there is another fire in the next 24 to 48 hours, they will probably have to open up a shelter. live in burlingame, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. traffic is starting to move again along interstate 80 in the east bay.

want to give you a live look at the situation now. you can see there's the eastbound direction and it's still a little slow. about 20 minutes ago, the chp did clear the scene at powell street in emeryville. around 8:15 this morning, there was a big mess. a vehicle hit the center divider and overturned. the crash blocked three lanes, causing a large backup earlier this morning. even though it's been cleared now, it does take a while to get things back to normal out there. so it will still be a little slow out there going through the area. we just got word of another crash on the westbound direction in that same area. not sure if someone was trying to look over and see what the problem was, but that is a very minor accident and they cleared that up quickly. let's talk about interstate 680 now, because all lanes are back open. but there was a fatal crash early there this morning, happening just after 3:00 this morning in milpitas. a gray bmw was stopped for an unknown reason when it was hit by another car. at least one person inside the bmw died. so far, no word on any other

injuries or fatalities. marijuana, guns and cash, items seized during a large police raid in north oakland. a stolen gps device led police to the home yesterday. one person was arrested and questioned overnight. police are still investigating and looking for more suspects. the california pizza kitchen in walnut creek could reopen tonight after a recent outbreak of the norovirus. the health department confirmed yesterday that at least 20 people contracted the virus after a graduation party on june 7th. it says one of the employees who was making salads that day was sick and spread it to customers and other workers. >> there was a lack of good personal hygiene from the workers, not any hand washing. we wanted -- there's also a requirement that you have a good sanitizer, like bleach, to clean with the rags. they had none of that. >> before the restaurant can reopen, every surface is going to have to be sanitized and steam cleaned. the employees are also being retrained on how to properly handle food. the company says there will also

be more surprise health inspections at that location. contra costa county health officials hope a gas will fully dissipate by later today. yesterday, a tank leaked yesterday. while it's not harmful in low doses it, puts off a raw egg smell and can cause nausea and headaches. >> smelled, hurt the eyes. so i closed the window right away. >> the herald says that nearby city got 300 calls from concerned residents who also noticed the smell. people with respiratory problems are still being advised to stay indoors. conoco phillips says an investigation could take weeks and regrets any problems the leak may have caused. state lawmakers have sent a budget to governor brown, even though it's possible he'll veto it. the $92 billion spending plan is still a work in progress. although the legislature quickly passed seven budget bills all in order to beat a midnight

deadline last night, there's no agreement with the governor. lawmakers sent the main budget bill to the governor by the deadline to avoid a cut in pay. >> going to have the controller and treasurer of california also take a look at the budget at any time before the governor would get a hold of it with signature and see does it truly balance. >> there is clearly uncertainty with the budget proposal. democrats say there are about a dozen adjoining bills which they hope to pass next week. here's a quick look at the budget, including cuts to courts and various state departments. the sacramento bee says it relies on revenue from greenhouse gas charges, barring from special state funds and money from a settlement for past mortgage abuses. republicans and democrats could not agree on welfare cuts, such as the welfare to work program. two men who survived the sinking of their fishing boat are remembering their friends they lost almost a year ago. last year, over the fourth of july weekend, the two men were

on the eric, a 115-foot vessel in the sea of cortez. during a storm, the ship sank and seven men remain missing. hanson and garcia made it off the boat and spent 16 hours trying to swim to shore. >> just regular fishermen came over and picked me up. i think he was an american. but they were down here in this area, came down and picked me up and i mean, i can't believe -- begin to tell you how happy i was to see this boat come. >> this week, they learned a deep sea diver had found the wreckage of the ship. they say they believe the bodies of their seven friends are still inside, because the crew abandoned ship and never woke them up. the next step is for the families to decide whether to try to salvage that ship. the city of alameda is putting together a master plan for parks. it calls for a new sports field, performance art center, and more open space. there's also a lot of support for urban gardens. the former alameda beltline property could become a park. another park could be slated for alameda point. the city council will consider the plan tuesday at 7:00. day three of the u.s. open is under way and tiger hits the

a colorado wildfire that has burned for a week has damaged or destroyed at least 112 homes. one person was killed in the 52,000-acre high park fire when a cabin burned. 3000 people have been evacuated and about a thousand have been allowed to return. the fire is 20% contained and firefighters do not expect to reach 100% containment for weeks. a fire believed to have started inside a napa restaurant destroyed six businesses and a large commercial building. news chopper 2 shows you what's left of the strip mall at jefferson street and pueblo avenue. the fire marshal told the napa valley register that firefighters noticed smoke at garcia's restaurant early yesterday morning and then saw a fire in the stove in the restaurant's kitchen. building inspectors say the shopping center is likely a total loss. right now, egyptians are voting on who they want to replace ousted president hosni mubarak. the polls open this morning and voting is expected to last two days. pollers are choosing between mubarak's ex prime minister and

islamic candidate from the muslim brotherhood. however, many are choosing not to vote, saying there can be no winner between a member of mubarak's former cabinet and a man who might push his religion onto the people. results of the election are expected in about a week. today, activists in san francisco are protesting what they call repressing in egypt. they will hold a vigil and rally at noon at the federal building, demanding nancy pelosi and president obama end all military aide to that country. the man chosen to be saudi arabia's next king has died. king abdullah says crown prince nayef died this morning and will be buried tomorrow. state tv reported he died in a hospital in geneva, where he had been treated for an unknown health problem. he was in his late 70s. nayef became the heir to king abdullah late last year. jerry sandusky won a major ruling in his trial. a judge will allow expert testimony on a psychiatric

disorder. the defense will insist the letters do not necessarily mean sandusky molested the boys, but saying the notes satisfied the needs caused by his disorder. sandusky must make himself available for prosecutors so they can prepare rebuttal. the prosecution is expected to wrap up its case on monday. on june 17th, 1972, five men working for president nixon's reelection campaign were arrested for trying to break into democratic party headquarters. reporters bob woodward and carl bernstein used leaked information from fbi associate director mark felt, a source they called deep throat, in articles about the ensuing scandal which helped lead to president nixon's resignation. for the first time ever, the pentagon is recognizing june as gay pride month. defense secretary leon panetta released a video message, thanking gay men and women in the military for their service. this comes nine months after the repeal of don't ask/don't tell took effect.

law. justices are also considering several other issues, including arizona's immigration crackdown, television broadcast indecency enforce minute and a federal law making it a crime lying about military honors. an arizona woman is trying to save her father's life. nikki stringer's father recently had his second heart attack and needs surgery. he doesn't have health insurance, so she is holding a yards sale, including items such as furniture and clothes donated by family members and some donated by complete strangers. >> these people have never even met my father before, so there really are genuinely nice people out there. >> she says this is just one of the events she's holding to help save her father. she says her father has three children, one grandchild and so much to live for. japan plans to fire up its nuclear reactors for the first time since last year's earthquake and tsunami. this morning, the government gave final approval to bring those reactors back online.
