welcome to mornings on two i'm john sasaki in for mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. a little cooler than yesterday? >> yeah. not as hot. we are talking about concord that hit 103 yesterday, 93 today. plenty warm along the coast and bay. we will begin to roll back those numbers. san francisco hit 86 yesterday. 70 degrees expected for today. if you are heading to the u.s. open, bring a light jacket you just may need it. we'll talk about your current conditions coming up. we begin with a tragic loss in san mateo county. a family is in mourning for the death of a three-year-old girl that drowned. alex savidge is live there with more on what happened. >> reporter: good morning. yes, this girl's family grieving after the three-year- old wondered away from her apartment in the complex and drowned in this lagoon. this morning you can see here a

memorial has been set up here. it was last night when neighbors gathered to hold a candle light vigil. the girl's family called 911 to report her missing just after 4:00 in the afternoon. san mateo police came here and launched a search. we are told it was a neighbor that found the girl floating unresponsive in this lagoon that is ajay isn't -- adjacent to the apartment complex. they did cpr but they could not revive this little girl. neighbors say they feel awful. >> three-year-old kid they are gone in a minute. you can't blame the parents for that. oh my god. the rest of their life will be hell. >> reporter: we did talk last night with the girl's father off camera. ktvu crew did. he did not want to speak on camera about what happened. only saying his daughter had a beautiful smile. the san mateo county coroners

office won't be larging an investigation -- won't be launching an investigation. a funeral is being planned for a 13-year-old petaluma boy that died while trying to help push a stranded truck off of highway 101. trevor smith was on his way to a birthday party when a truck carrying some of the party guests ran out of gas. he got out to help push the truck when he fell and was run over. authorities have not decided whether to file any criminal charges in the case. oakland police are searching for the driver responsible for a fatal hit and run crash. it happened at 10:00 last night near international boulevard. officers responding to the scene after getting reports of a fight. when they got there they found the body in the street. witnesses told them the driver hit the victim and nearby white suv and took off. they are inspecting that suv and crash site for clues about the suspects vehicle. no suspect information has been released. two women were hurt in a

freak accident in eastern contra corsica county. they were on the back of the boat when a hydrocoil broke apart and struck them. both women were rushed to the hospital with head injuries. the harbor master says with a lot of people on and off the water everyone must pay close attention. >> be aware of your surroundings. slow down especially when you see a skier or wake border in the water. just pay attention. >> the contra costa county sheriffs office is investigating the accident. if you didn't enjoy sweltering temperatures as high as 106 degrees yesterday you are in luck, there there is a cooling trend beginning. kids kept cool at the downtown playground. officials at water world said they saw three times the number of visitors than on an average day. >> kids are out of school and

toughest test. ktvu allie rasmus joins us live from san francisco with more on what is ahead. good morning, allie. >> reporter: just to tell you where we are. we are just down the main entrance of the olympic club where thousands will make their way through this portal to watch the final day of the u.s. open. all the people you see coming down the hill, they have just come from shuttles that have taken them from candle stick park all the way over here. the olympic club there is not a lot of parking in this area. skyline boulevard is closed off to traffic. if people want to get here they are starting at candle stick park. they go through and get their tickets scanned and walk through this main entrance. we started the morning just like all these other people you see here. we started at candle stick park, we hopped on the shuttle and talked to people here because it's fathers day. we talked to a father and son team that was from missouri.

collapsed on top of them. my understanding there is a number of people on that stage unfortunately four people were hurt. the remainder of the people when they heard the stage coming down ran from the area. >> the show was canceled after that accident. according to the bands website the 40,000 tickets were sold out. investigators are trying to determine what caused that collapse. it has been almost a year since a stage collapse killed seven people at sugar land concert. air show nearly ended in disaster. >> oh my gosh. >> viewers were shocked when that happened. that is a stunt plane that crashed at the legacy air show in eastern idaho. the pilot was doing a series of rolls when his eagle stunt plane lost power. the pilot aimed for an empty field when he went down and

amazingly he landed safely. only suffering a broken ankle but otherwise okay. there will be a new course at this years reno air races after last years deadly crash. 11 people were killed and 70 others hurt when a vintage plane crashed. the new course will be about 150 further away from spectators. the changes will also help smooth out difficult turns for pilots. this years show starts on september 16th. four climbers are presumed dead after an avalanche on the highest mountain in north america. a 69-year-old survived after tumbling 60 feet into ay vas. the other climbers fell into the snow and have not been seen since. snowfall and wind are slowing search efforts. >> we are getting a look at the damage left behind in mexico by hurricane koa lat that. a 13-year-old girl and seven-

year-old sister were killed when their home was crushed. additional crews have arrived to fight the wild fires that destroyed more homes in colorado history. more than 1600 firefighters are fighting around the clock. 15 miles west of fort collins. that fire is estimated to be 45% contained. lightning started the fire more than a week ago and it is already burned 55,000 acres. >> the number that our preliminary assessment came up with is 181 homes destroyed by this fire. my understanding this makes it the most destructive wild fire in colorado. >> the fire was quiet overnight but crews are under a red flag warning today. they are expecting wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour along the ridge tops there and temperatures are going to be in

the 90s. rick santorum is weighing in on president obama's new immigration policy. >> you are seeing a pattern where the president said i will pick and choose what lay law -- what laws i'm going to enforce. what laws i'm going to stand up in court and fight for. >> he says it's wrong for the president to stand up for immigration and ignore issues such as the defensive marriage act. and he criticized mitt romney response. resaid romney should have take an better stance but doesn't want to anger latino voters. both are schedule to appear at a political conference held by the national association of latino elected officials. romney is scheduled to speak on thursday. the president on friday. latinos are the fastest growing is voters in america. new green regulations are causing controversy. even before they take effect. california recently approved some of the toughest standards for new homes in the nation.

a three-year-old child drowns after wondering away from her home. this morning authorities are calling it a tragic accident. welcome back to mornings on 2 i'm john sasaki. >> and i'm claudine wong. a memorial sits at the lagoon where this young child drowned. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is live rob the scene with what we -- is live on the scene with what we know what happened. >> reporter: this all just happened in matter of minutes. the three-year-old girl wondered away from her apartment and found floating unresponsive in this nearby lagoon that is just a few feet away. neighbors this morning have set up a small memorial here at the edge of the water. last night people that live in

this complex came together and held a candle light vigil. many stunned by this drowning. the girls family called 911 shortly after 4:00 yesterday morning to report her missing. san mateo police moved in and launched a search and a short time later we were told it was a neighbor that found the girl floating in the lagoon. police and paramedics did cpr but they were not allowed to revive the little girl. they remember seeing the girl playing here in the complex. >> terrible. devastating. they were always you know they were always the two girls were always together. >> reporter: the san mateo county coroners office will investigate this drowning. police tell us this does appear to be simply an accident. a ktvu crew did talk with the girls father off camera last night. he didn't want to talk specifically about what happened. he simply told us his daughter in his words had the most beautiful smile he would ever

see. we are live this morning in san mateo alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police are investigating the death of a long-time east bay artist who was found stabbed to death in his home. officers discovered the body of 67-year-old michael thorn bradley inside a duplex on morgan street. there is no information on any suspects. oakland police are offering a $10,000 reward in the case. we have more details about a shooting in oakland we first told you about yesterday right here on mornings on 2. according to the oakland tribune all four people shot are laborers. they were continuing a celebration that began with a relatives graduation party earlier that day. the four men were shot around 4:00 yesterday morning near 28th avenue and east 16th street. one man was pronounced dead at the scene. his brother and two cousins were wounded but are expected to survive. despite situations like that shooting, most bay area cities are reporting a drop in

violent crime. 13 of the areas 15 biggest cities recorded fewer murders, robbery, assaults, and rapes. criminal justice experiments say the economy could be if bringing together a stronger community. ivory madison submitted evidence on friday that show key differences from what mirkarimi and his wife say happened during their december 31st argument. one of the sticking points is whether mirkarimi tried to interfere with the investigation. a conduct hearing could cost mirkarimi his job. a group of native americans protisted the open -- protested the opening of the park yesterday. saying the new parking lot sits

listens to what they have to say. we are hearing more about the discovery of the erik. ship wrecked boat found at the bottom of the sea. less than 24 hours after the sinking he rented boats and equipment and convinced the ships captain a survivor to help him. last week sonar images reveal searches of a ship and they confirmed it was the erik. families must decide whether to send more money to dive into the wreck and recover the bodies. >> a scholarship will be set up to -- perez graduated from rear don high school in san francisco. yesterday the school held a fundraiser for a scholarship in his name. firefighters donated $25,000 to that scholarship fund. perez's younger brother said

the scholarship is more about than just perez. >> it's about the men and women in the uniform being in the military or in the fire department. it's about the sacrifices they make every day. >> the fire that killed lieutenant perez also claimed the life of firefighter and paramedic anthony valerio. southern california wild fire is expected to grow today as hot conditions continue to fuel flames. fire began yesterday afternoon south of interstate 10 in bo mont. 30 acres had burned by the time firefighters arrived. that spread to 2,000-acres in four hours. the wind will drop to 10 miles an hour today but temperatures will still be in the 90s. so far it's only 10% contained. fire in eldorado county came dangerously close to homes. several people in the area had to leave their homes because the fair spread so quick all. it burned ten acres before fire firefighters got it under control.

forecast coming up. the olympic club is tough. ktvu allie rasmus joining us now live from the entrance gates with the crowds already arriving. allie. >> reporter: as rosemary said it's cooler today but the weather here is still beautiful. not a clue in the sky. people are dressed in their short leaves and shorts. now that it's later on this morning things are getting a little more crowded. people are getting their passes and badges scanned and making their way through the main entrance here to watch the final day of the u.s. open. the first group to tee off starts at 9:20. today of course is fathers day. thousands of people are expected to show up and watch this event. all the people you see coming down the hill in the distance. they have just come off shuttle buses. that's because the volunteers and spectators they all started the day 11 miles away from here at candle stick park.

police. this drowning appears to be a tragic accident. you can see a small memorial set up here where this three- year-old girl was found floating unresponsive. she wondered away from her nearby apartment. last night people came here to this spot to hold a candle light vigil. many stunned by this drowning. the girl called 911 to report her missing from her apartment. san mateo police moved in and launched a search and a short time later we're told it was a neighbor that found the little girl floating in the lagoon right next to the apartment complex. police and paramedics did cpr but they were not able to revive this little girl. neighbors we talked with say they can't imagine the pain this family is dealing with. >> you have to keep your eye on them 24/7. you can't just have your kids out there and you know not have them supervised at all times.

>> reporter: the san mateo county coroners office will be doing the investigation into this drowning. one of the ktvu crews did talk off camera with the girl's father. he didn't want to talk specifically about what happened. how his daughter ended up in the water but said his daughter had a beautiful smile. we are live this morning in san mateo. a funeral is being planned for a 13-year-old petaluma boy that died while trying to help push a stranded truck off highway 101. trevor smith was on the way to the birthday party with several people on friday when a truck carrying the party guests ran out of gas. trevor got out to help push the truck when he fell and was run over. oakland police are searching for the driver responsible for a fatal hit and run crash. it happened around 10:00 last night near international boulevard. officers responded to the scene after getting reports of a fight. when they got there they found the body in the street. witnesses told police the driver hit the victim and a

yesterday breaking down today. one person is dead after a stage collapsed an hour before a radio head concert. it happened yesterday afternoon in toronto. crew members were setting up the stage when it suddenly fell on top of them. the collapse left several trapped in the rubble. >> they were setting up when the top portion of the stage collapsed on top of them. my understanding there were a number of people on that stage. unfortunately four people were hurt. the remainder of the people when they heard the stage coming down ran from the area. >> the show was canceled after that accident. according to the bands website the concerts 40,000 tickets were sold out. it has been a year since a similar stake collapse killed seven people at a sugar land concert. heavy winds knocked down the stage. it happened just before the country music group took the stage. an air show nearly ended in

about an hour ago we learned that one man drowned yesterday after a fishing boat capsized in the delta five miles west of stockton. a second man was found clinging to the boat. a third man is still missing. that friend says all flee men are from oakland. police have recovered one body from the water. they say the men were not wearing life jackets. the man who is still missing is presumed dead. police are expected to resuit search this morning. a peninsula neighborhood? shock. a 3-year-old girl drowned in lagoon not far from her home on day street in san mateo. alx savage tells us thousand happened and how neighbors are coming to the family's aid. >> this drowning happened in a matter of minutes. the 3-year-old girl wandered away tw her apartment in this complex. a shore time later she was found unresponse nift lagoon a few feet away. there is a small memorial that sits here at the edge of the water. it was last night when neighbors came to this very

spot, they held a candlelight vigil, many stunned boy this drowning. the girl's family called nine one qun just after 4:00 p.m. yesterday to roar their daughter was missing from their apartment. san mateo police moved in and launched a search and it wasn't long after that that we're told a neighbor found this girl floating unresponsive in the lagoon that's just adjacent to the apartment complex. police and paramedic did cpr but could not revive the girl. we talked with neighbor who says she doesn't understand how this could happen. shep the girl's parents always kept a close eye on her. >> it's just devastating. i feel for the family. like i said, they're amake parents. they're always with their children. i run into them almost every morning walking their children to the school bus. i've never seen the kids by themselves. >> the san mateo county coroner eaves will do an investigation

into this drowning. i did speak or touch base with the san mateo police department. their investigators telling me that at this point the drowning appears to be a tragic accident. back to you. we're following breaking news out of the southern california where 47-year-old rodney king has been found dead. according to tmz effort found early this morning by his fiancee at the bottom of their pool. tmz says he was pronounced dead just after 6:00 a.m. a drowning investigation is being conducted by police. he became fame us in 1991 when he was videotaped being beaten by l.a.p.d. officers. all of the officers involved were acquitted of criminal charges sparking citywide riots. a funeral is being planned for a 13-year-old boy who died trying to push a a stranded truck off highway 101. trevor smith was on his way to a birthday party friday when a truck carrying some of the pear guests ran out of gas. he got out to help push the

truck. he fell and was run over. oakland police are severing for the drive responsible for a fatal hit and run crash about 10:00 p.m. last night at 61st avenue and east lawn street near international boulevard. police responded to the scene after getting reports of a fight. when they got there, they found the body in the street. witnesses told them the driver hit the victim and a nearby white suv before taking off. you can see the suv there. they are expecting it and the crash site for clues about the suspect's vehicle. two women were hurt after a freak accident in the water in eastern contra costa county. on the back of a boat in the discovery bay harbor yesterday when a hydrofoil broke apart and struck them. both women were rushed to the hospital. >> be aware of your surroundings. slow down. especially when you see a skier or a wake border in the water.

a yule cruel drown there's a san mateo lagoon argument neighbor speaks out about this family tragedy. welcome back. >> i'm claudine wong. a memorial now sits at the lagoon where this young child drowned. the accident happened yesterday around 4:15 at a lagoon near the apartment complex on the 1500 block of day street. alex savage is live on the scene with what we know about what happened. >> reporter: one neighbor i talked with a short time ago told me this girl's parents always kept a close eye on their kids.

that's why they find this hard to understand. yesterday she wandered away from her a was found floating in this nearby lagoon. there is a small memorial sitting here at the edge of the water. last night neighbors came to this very spot and held a candlelight vigil, many shocked boy this drowning. it happened in a matter of minutes yesterday afternoon just after 4:00. the girl's family called up 9-1- 1 to report that their daughter was missing. san mateo police police department moved in and began to search this area. a shore time later we're told it was a neighbor who found the girl floating unresponsive in this lagoon just adjacent to the apartment complex where she lives. police and paramedic performed cpr but could not revive the girl. she was pronounced dead at the scene. we talked with a neighbor who lives nearby the family and says she saw the girl's dad shortly after the drowning. >> he was just heartbroken. he did not seem like he really wanted to talk and i didn't

want to pressure. i expressed my sympathies and kind of went home. i'm sure they're just devastated. >> reporter: the san mateo county coroner's office will be doing a a full investigation into the girl's death. so far she has not been identified. i did touch base with the san mateo police department. they tell me at this point the drowning appears to be a tragic accident. the girl's father, one of our crews did catch up with him last night. he was far too distraught to talk on camera about what happened. back to you. oakland police are investigating the death of a longtime east bay artist found stabbed to death in his home. police discovered the body of michael bradley inside a duplex on market street. a neighbor called police after he had not seen bradley for a a few days. oakland police are offering a $10,000 reward in the case. we have more details about a shooting in oakland we told

you about yesterday all four people shot are labors who immigrated from guatemala. the four men were shot around 4:00 yesterday morning near 28th avenue and east 16th street. one man was of pronounced dead at the scene. his brother and two cousins were wounded but are expected to survive. despite situations like that shooting, most bay area cities are reporting a drop in violent crimes. 13 of the area's 15 biggest cities recorded fewer murders, robberies, assaults and rapes last year than in 2010. this is according to new numbers from the f.b.i. there are differing accounts of what exactly happened on new year's eve in the ross mirkirimi case. his neighbor submitted evidence fried day that shows key differences from what ross mirkirimi and his wife say

the olympic club for the u.s. open. when they come in, this is what they see. the usga has built a popup city here at the olympic club. they've got enormous tents they've set up just for this event. people are checking their bags over here and often the distance of that enormous tent, that's growrs selling merchandise. when the grads come through, you can see them pass through this pal union. they head up the stairs off in the distance over there to make their way over to the course to get a good spot to view some of the action today. we're standing on a two-story tall platform that the usga built on top of the olympic club course just for this event. can you see the old sand trap under that platform. off to the left, you can see the main entrance to the course where people are -- big crowds coming through. they're getting their passes scanned and getting ready to start their day here. the first group of golfers teed off about 20 minutes ago. the main golfers, the top players, they don't get started until later on this afternoon. we have been here since 6:00

welcome back. tomorrow san francisco kicks off the city's gay pride week with the traditional raising of the rainbow flag. seem city officials including mayor ed lee and pride pro raid participants will raise the flag from the balcony of the mayor's city hall office. this was last year's ceremony. this year's festivities are next weekend culminating with the parade sunday.
