this afternoon. it started in napa and burned dangerously close to homes near the silv era do trail. they got the call just before two this afternoon. officials say as many as 30 homes were treatenned for a time. 75 firefighters along with an area tack helicopter brought this fire under control in about an hour. in alameda, firefighters were out for a second day of controlled burns at camp parks. army officials say everything went as planned. the burns meant to reduce fire hazards in the training areas. it's also designed to help stop tension fires moving to nearby neighborhoods. >> bill martin was here and there was a lot of fire news but the weather didn't play much of a role. >> probably the controlled burn in alameda. that's why they do them. you have higher humids and temperatures like on saturday. today was a mild day but under scores the time of year it is.

it's with the wet in the winter and dry in the summer. as we go out to the live reports out toward the pittsburgh area gusts of wind to 18 miles an hour out of the west. this direction is helpful to firefighters and i suspect that is why a lot of the fires went out or were put out squabbingly because of the wind and humidity. that's not going to be the case all year. when i come back we will go to the five-day and when it'll start to warm up and what you can expect in the next few days. >> it was a close call today for three people on board a boat near antioch when the boat's engine exploded. the owner of the 30-foot boat says he was taking two possible buyers out for a test ride on the river when the engine burst into flames. the owner grabbed three life jackets. >> it's just a boat. what cares. you know, i'm happy. >> reporter: all three people are expected to be just fine.

investigators say the owner will be responsible for recovering the boat. we have more video of the fire as that boat sank into the river. bart police say they have caught a very busy thief. a man accused of specializing in stealing bikes. new, ken pritchett live where bart said they are taking action to try to target the this frequent crime. >> reporter: bart police say they caught a 47-year-old man down below here in the 24 street bart station in the act of steal a bike. they say that arrest then lead to a stash of stolen bikes, it's just one arrest but is part of the bigger problem when you look at the numbers. bart said a station agent sawt. a man walked up to a bike and took his pick of wheels, then tried to get away on a trainu. we consider him to be a busy bart thief because of the fact he had five and had a criminal history. >> reporter: five, five bikes

were found at his home, all thought to be stolen. >> actually bart considers this a very serious issue. >> reporter: many riders who park their bikes also take theft very seriously just look at the cables and chains, snaking through the bikes and racks. >> bikes get stolen and . >> reporter: bart keeps track of how many are reported stolen. berkeley's ashby has 24 stolen this year. 16th street was second with 22, followed by pleasant hill, east dublin with fremont and civic tying for 5th. those numbers out pace last year whenna 507 were reported stolen from bart stations. bart started a task force this year to tackingl the problem but said the public fleds to secure their bike. this. >> well my bike is a pretty cheap. nobody wants it because it looks so bad.

>> reporter: police say with the new force they are using a number of tactics or new tactics including the tags, something you would see on the hotel door knob. it has tips on how to secure your bike and they put them on unsecured bikes. they say they are using undercover sting operations too. ken pritchett. >> the investigation into the west oakland fire that crippled the bart last week is growing. agents were seen at the burn site. we are told that fire experts will be joining them tomorrow to try to help figure out what caused the fire. the heat damage insulation that set down service and forced people to wait for hours for buses for face massive traffic jams. . >> a man accused of molesting

develop mentally disabled children is being held on no bail tonight. robert honda is live in san jose where the case is race raising questions about the safety of children. >> reporter: we got a hostile reception from parents and workers here at the facility. we were trying to get information and answers on how the man managed to work here even after he was accused of molesting children. the da said he molested an 18- year-old mentally disabled child. he worked for a similar agency in loss gatos. the prosecutor said he molested two young girls at that facility. he was arrested but never charged for one of them. >> he was extremely well liked which is in keeping the normal

person who is molesting children that they are likable. that's how they get access to victims, that's how they maintain the relationship. >> reporter: so far both actions refused to talk about bailey siting the court case. most workers refused to discuss him but one person who worked him defended him and said she doesn't believe the accusers. >> in group homes kids always make allegations, this is not the first time and won't be the last they will be allegations. >> reporter: the case is like the sandusky case. the coach facing assault allegations. >> the similarities is you have multiple victims, do not know each other who have come forward and told a story and how would they cooperate their storeys in. >> reporter: bailey returns to court june 26th to give a plea on the counts against him. he could be sentenced to life. live in san jose, robert honda.

. a man faces charges of theft accused of bilking hundreds of thousands of dollars from pearl jam. ricky charles goodrich who was the executive with the management company transferred more than $300,000 from company accounts to his own account between 2006 and 2010. >> the former soup superintendent of a school district plead fought gley to stealing money from the district. they say he used more than $100,000 to remodel his home. he is also facing felony

charges of taking money in 2007. the two will be heard tonight. >> right now a suspended sever sheriff sin side the first day of his ethics hearing which will determine if he can keep his job. rob roth is live at city hall with the two people everybody wants to hear from. >> reporter: he just came down and i can tell you it's packed. the hearing started about an hour ago and it's still going on. the sheriff got applause. they hope the hearings will convince them he shouldn't be removed from office. much of the hearing so far has been about witnesses and what evidence to allow in including statements by the neighbor. he said he is prepared to testify this evening but we are told its doubtful he or the mayor will be called today.

he spoke to reporters earlier. >> i can be still the kind of sheriff that it is people of san francisco voted me into being that i'm democraticly elected,. >> reporter: the mayor is spearheading the effort to have him removed. he plead guilty to falsely imprisoning his wife in a case stemming a domestic violence incident. the mayor said he is also prepared to testify. >> as part of our presentation we have law enforcement professionals who will speak to how this degrades the office of the sheriff and so what we will present that at the proper time. >> reporter: this is the first of three hearings scheduled over the next two weeks to see if there is sufficient grounds to remove him from office. reporting live in san francisco, rob roth. >> leaders in san jose are set to provide more housing to the

homeless. the city council approved the lease of two properties to the nonprofit downtown streets team. that group plans to use the properties to house 15 homeless residents. officials say they will be picked based on their participation. the proposition 29 cigarette tax is still to close to call two weeks after the california primary. the secretary of state said the nos are ahead by just over 17, 500 votes. about 400,000 still need to be counted. it would add a one dollar tax to be used for cancer research. >> health officials have confirmed the first human case of west nile in california this year. they say a 70-year-old in kern county is recovering the mosquito born disease. health experts say people over the age of 50 are more likely to be kick they say there are a lot of places for mosquito to hatch. >> with the recession we have seen a lot of neglected

are going to see less of a good situation for fog to formt. will be harder because of this low coming in. in some way itself will make it cooler, but it'll take it easier on us on the fog. we will see how that goes. as you move through the climate tomorrow, paloal to 79, 80, into the valley you have good air quality in san jose, fremont which is nice for this time of year. fire danger, it's summer so it's always high but not extreme. as you hop over out toward the grade you get the low 90's. out toward livermore. those are the hot spots, that's just like today. as we go into tomorrow, almost a copy. as we go into the rest of the week low pressure center parks off shore. the winds come on shore. little bit of a southwesterly breeze and that make itself cooler thursday significantly. kind of levels off on friday with more cloud cover and in the weekend it'll change. this all is like a low fire danger environment for us.

. police officers in pleasant hill took time out today to support the special olympics, they took part in a three mile torch run. after 30 years this is the police chief's last special olympics run with his department before he retires. >> work with the athletes is satisfying, unconditional love is more than money can buy. >> looks young to be retiring. 3500 will take part. the run started last friday in fresno county and ends this coming friday at the opening ceremonies at davis. >> congratulations to them.
