good morning. thank you for joining us on this wednesday morning june 20th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. steve is here talking about summertime. >> this afternoon. it will feel like it. last sat was pretty summer like. it will be that hot. temperatures are already upper 50 or near 60s for lows. it won't take long to get in the 90s for some. 70s and 80s closer to the bay. here is sal. >> southbound 101 that traffic looks pretty good heading down to the central san rafael area. also the traffic is moving along pretty well on interstate 880. let's go back to the desk. in overnight news firefighters had to move in quickly to put out a fire at a paint store. it happened just about two hours ago at kelly moore paint on 42nd street. firefighters put it out within 15 minutes. a fire investigator will try to figure out what caused the fire

and at the back of the store and head through the ceiling. >> they were able to gain interior access and put the fire out. found the fire in the roof. >> firefighters isolated the fire before it could get bigger and ignite the paint. it caused last weeks traffic nightmare in the bay area. federal investigators are hoping to find out what caused that big fire. claudine wong is joining us. she's at the billing that is right at -- building that is right at the heart of investigation. >> reporter: we do expect a team of fire specialists to be here later this morning. really in a couple hours to take a closer look at the building. you can see the fire scene still barricaded off. there is a security guard keeping an eye on things. making sure no one goes in and out of here. no one allowed near it. our crew did see atf agents out here yesterday taking a closer

look at the site. the big question has been the safety of this fire scene. it has been almost a week since the fire destroyed what was supposed to be a senior housing complex. that fire started just before 2:30 in the morning last thursday. frames burned so hot and so high they damaged the train tracks. stopping all traffic in and out of the city and triggering that traffic nightmare throughout the bay area. you can see a bart train just passed us through here. the big question is what started this fire and we hope to learn that again from federal investigators that are bringing their toe experts. william lynch was arrested

for beating the reverend in october 2010. he was beaten to within an inch of his life at his retirement home. linch claims he molested him and his younger brother. new information about the person hit and killed last night by an amtrak train in union city. it happened about 6:00 on the train tracks. amtrak says a woman in her 40s was trespassing when she was hit by a train going from sacramento to san jose. none of the 190 train passengers were hurt. passengers were transferred to buses and continued on to their destination. today is a knick day of a sit in. the district wants to close lake view and four other

schools because of budget issue. but other protestors say they will stay and teach summer school classes to the kids. oakland city council approves the deal to redevelop the cities old army base. the $1 billion proposal could bring thousands of jobs to the city. lorraine blanco is at the base this morning with the last minute negotiations that may have saved the deal. lorraine. >> reporter: pam, council members voted 7-0 to approve this new deal but not before dozens of members of the community stepped far to chime in on what they want to see here. after hours of discussion last night. council members approved a billion dollar program. many organizers got a lot of what they wanted. prologent will bill the

warehouses and agreed to hire oakland residence for half of their staff. they also agreed to refrain from asking job applicants if they have been convicted of a crime. many residence think these negotiations with thousands of new jobs propsed could be see to controlling violence in oakland. >> right now -- not just for oakland but for the region. >> somebody is at work and they are not in the streets then everything will change for the better and parents will feel better if thaw can have job. by moving war the city made a deline. contraction will start on the

last too long. it will be back in a big way starting tomorrow. sunny and warm for many. hot inland as temperatures warm up. santa rosa split the difference between downtown and the airport. concord 85-91. and san jose from 81 yesterday we'll go 85 today. probably a little warmer out to reid hill. tomorrow we start to bring temperatures down and it looks unseasonally cool as we head to the weekend. far cry from last weekend. 90s for some. 80s for many. just a little component of a sea breeze. not that much. it will not matter today. 50s and 60s santa rosa down to 60. high pressure today is going to win out. two systems merging together tomorrow. one low there and another one dropping down there will open that door to that sea breeze. it will really crank up.

>> she was so angry at the time that she felt she had to express her frustration at being groped by this tsa agent. >> price claims the tsa agent picked her because of a past history of the two women. tsa says the initial pat down was conducted correctly and that they followed procedures. 6:13. new this morning a gunman in france that took four people hostage inside of a bank he is just released one of the hostages. this gunman claims sheas connected to al qaeda. the hostages include the bank's director and three other people. negotiations with this gunman continue. tensions have been very high since march. that's when another gunman that claimed to be connected to al qaeda killed three jewish school children, a rabbi and

paratrooper. hosni mubarak is in a coma after having a stroke in prison. he was declared dead when he arrived at this military hospital. now egyptian officials say the 84-year-old former president is in a coma but that his heart and other vital organs are functioning. he was sentenced to life in prison two weeks ago for the killings of demonstrators during last years uprising. the clock is ticking for eric holder to hand over documents to a house committee. or the committee will hold him in contempt of congress temperature alison. >> reporter: the house oversight commit see is set to meet in 45 minutes. as of right now it looks like the contempt vote is on. eric holder met with house leaders to try to resolve the yearlong standoff but no one left satisfied. republicans say they want more

documents. immediately relating to the fast and furious gun scandal. this morning the top democrat on the committee said republicans are just trying to embarrass the obama administration. >> i just think contempt is going far too far and very unreasonable. we have never held an attorney general that is the congress of the united states never hill attorney general in contempt. >> house speaker john boehner has not said whether he would bring the contempt vote to the floor. he said yesterday he's focused on jobs. we'll have live coverage from the hearing during my next update in about an hour. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. the california highway patrol is investigating a violent attack on interstate five in los angeles. the attack was caught on tape. we want to warn you it's graphic. a bystander apparently shot it with a camera phone after noticing a group of men arguing

outside their cars. the chp said they received several reports of an attack that day but no one was there when they arrived on the scene. 6:16. police searching for two men that attacked a woman near santa clara university. it happened early monday morning near campus. the woman says two latino men in their mid 20s approached her. one was heavy set, the other had a more slender bill. police say the men grabbed at her arm and backpack. she was able to get away and run to safety. if you have any information contact santa clara police. defense lawyers will decide this morning if they will call the former football coach to the witness stand. here's new video of zap dusky a- - sandusky arriving at the courthouse a few moments ago. his wife testified yesterday. she said she remembered most of

her accusers and defended her husband. saying he never acted inappropriately with the children at their home or on the road. deliberations will probably start in the afternoon. cal fire is demanding that pg&e pay the cost of fighting a big wild fire in sonoma county almost two years ago. investigators say a pg&e power line with a history of snapping started the fire in september of 2010. cal fire says pg&e should pay the estimated $400,000 that it costs to fight that fire. one volunteer firefighters. two divers that were stranded in the waters along the sonoma coast they are cold and fired but otherwise they are okay. they were arrested yes evening in south point state park. one person was pulled out of the water by a life guard while

good morning. bay bridge toll plaza getting a little crowded here. you can see cars stacking up. it's nothing too bad yes. but there is a crowd. >> time now 6:25. a 23-year-old woman fighting for her life after a car she was riding in crashed into that pool. this happened late sun night inest condo toe. that is in north san diego county. the driver was going up to 90

miles an hour in a residential area. he lost control, crashed through a fence, and landed into that backyard pool. now the driver was able to climb out but the woman passenger was trapped in that car and was under water for ten minutes before being rescued. preservationists are vowing to keep up the fight to save a marin county home. the planning commission unanimously approved a plan to tear down the house. the 5500 square foot home was built back in 1951 by prominent bay area architect. it was sole for $5 million last year and the new owners applied for a demolition permit to rebuild on its the property. >> they need to be saved or we will lose them for our generation and future generations. >> is this a remarkable piece

right now security guards remain posted. everyone waiting for this team that was called in by the atf. we saw them here yesterday taking a look at the scene but the safety of this scene has been a big issue. all you have to do is look at how hot and how big this fire got to understand why. you are looking at video from last thursday's fire that started at 2:15 in the morning and damaged the train tracks near the west oakland bart station causing that traffic meltdown for the rest of the morning and the rest of the day. things got back to normal the next day for bart. but this investigation has been ongoing with the safety of the scene and question about what started that fire is still out there. that's what brings us here today. again as we wait for this team of specialists that is supposed to arrive at 9:00 this morning we don't know who exactly is in this team. we do know that they are expected here and they have come from across the country to

his head. witnesses report seeing a car parked in the area for three days. the man that died was 27 years old but they have not yet released his name or determine how he died. there is a new effort to ban cars from a very busy san francisco street. ktvu paul chambers is in the city to tell us about this effort to speed up traffic on market street. >> reporter: good morning, dave. speeding up traffic by eliminating the cars. market street pretty empty in this area. and this is exactly what the plan would do. it would eliminate all together or reduce the number of private motorists on market street between franklin and stewart. they presented the plan to the mta. reestablishing parts of market street as a premier cultural and economic is civic center of the bay area. and it may make it more bike and pedestrian phrenly.

train track. federal agents still don't know what caused the fire which halted bart service for almost 12 hours last thursday. >> we just found out this mornings fire at a kelly moore paint store in oakland caused between $50-60,000 damage. flames broke out at the back of the store and shot through the roof. investigator will determine how that fire started. >> and this is day six of a protest at oakland's lake view elementary school. the school district wants to close the school to save money. but angry parents are camping out at the school and planning to teach summer school even though school police have tole them they have to leave. >> it has been more than step years since the military moved out of the oakland army base along the waterfront. this morning the city is a step closer to a billion dollar proposal to redevelop the area. ktvu lorraine blanco is at the base to talk about the number of jobs that the deal promises to bring to oakland.

lorraine. >> reporter: pam the redevelopment here at the old oakland army base is expected to create 2,000 construction jobs and another 2,000 permanent jobs here. and that is a major reason for the resounding 7-0 vote. now after hours of discussion, council members approved the billion dollar proposal around 11:00 p.m. last night. more than 100 community members passed the chamber -- packed the amber for the vote. ? they agreed to require businesses of 40 or more lows to hire oakland residence for half of their staff. they also agree to refrain from asking job applicants if they have been convicted of a crime before. one of the council members told us late last night that the city spent more than 24 hours at the bargaining table with developers right before the

vote. >> i personally was not ready to walk because i think more than 75% of the jobs were already going to be everything we wanted. we were talking about a smaller number of jobs. and we really need this. >> the council must approve a second reading of the proposed plan next week. by moving forward the city just made the deadline to keep a key grant worth $.25 million of funding. we are following developing news from afghanistan. the pentagon says as many as three u.s. troops may have been killed in a suicide bombing in the eastern part of the country. details still coming in at this point. but early reports indicate that a car packed with explosives rammed into some vehicles in an international convoy. as many as 15 afghans were killed that attack. a u.s. military investigation is remming that seven u.s. troops face administrative

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. here's the headline. will the market get from the fed. the federal reserve meets today. live look at the dow down 17 points right now. time now 6:56. oakland mayor jean quan could literally have to pay the price if the city misses court imposed delines. the judge demanding city leaders stick to his detailed schedule in carrying out reforms in the police department. and he's warning he may fine the city for any missed deadlines. he may even order mayor jean quan to personally pay up.

meantime san francisco mayor e lee has a new plan to fight crime in the cities bay view district. it's a response to a string of recent shootings including this one liassic on cameron way. the plan includes a new summer jobs program and community activities like a midnight basketball league. the mayor also wants to add extra police officers in that area. more than two weeks after the june 5th elections a measure that would at a $1 tax to the pack of cigarettes is still too close to call. prop 29 is trailing by 17,500 votes. 400,000 is votes still need to be count. san diego county avocado growers are having a hard time finding people to work their farms. a lot of migrant workers are taking breaks this year and going to work in their home countries. it will not have a huge impact on prices because of high demand and strong competition.
