time, as we start things off with a bang. >> oh! authorities say renovation work for the america's cup sailing race may have sparked this fire. it tore through an historic building on the san francisco pier causing the facade to collapse. >> a section of the embarcadero in san francisco remains closed at this hour. firefighters are still on the scene of that four-alarm fire at pier 39. amber lee tells us about a muni

line favored by tourists is still shut down. ken, have you late word about the condition of the historic building. >> reporter: the fire chief says it is possible the historic building at pier 29 may have to be torn down. the first call came at 1:50 this afternoon. the fire quickly crew to four alarms. >> the firefighters did a great job. we applied a lot of resources to this fire, with the goal of not having it spread. >> reporter: firefighters had to pull back as parts of the building collapsed. here's another angle shot by viewer brian hasserman on his cell phone. >> he did a very good job in assessing the vulnerability of the structure and established what we called a collapse zone to make sure there was no one in front the building. sure enough, parts of it did

give away. >> reporter: fire officials say welders were working inside the building, but it's not clear if that's what sparked the fire. the pier was being renovated to house america's cup offices for next year's race. >> the america's cup will be happening here in 2013 as the america's cup village. there should be no impact from this, other than an unsightly facade. >> reporter: it was built back in 1915 and renne vaded in the 70s. it's one of the last so-called finger piers. >> there's are historic piers and historic buildings. it was actually a beautiful structure, and this is very, very sad. >> reporter: tenge nears are expected to go through the damaged building tomorrow to see if it can be saved. >> it's very vulnerable. the heavy water pressure, and it's an age old structure. it's likely, if it doesn't collapse on its own, it would have to come down. >> reporter: firefighters here

went into the meeting at 9:30 tonight to discuss what they're going to do next. they just finished that meeting as that report was going out. i just spoke with the battalion chief. he tells me that the fire department is pulling out. they're starting to gather their gear, and they will leave this area along the embarcadero, and turn it back to the port of san francisco. there will be some cleanup here in this area. very soon, we're hoping that the embarcadero will reopen. live in san francisco, ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> more details now. the america's cup event authority released a statement they don't anticipate today's fire will have any impact, and still plan to move on with the construction of the america's cup village. it's been eight hours since this fire started, and things are still not back to normal tonight along the san francisco waterfront. amber lee is live along the embarcadero near the foot of

chestnut, where pier 29 is located. she tells us about the impact on traffic and muni. >> reporter: julie, we're standing on the track of muni's f line. we're right in front of the fire damaged building. the f line is not running here. we're told the embarcadero will remain closed between bay and broadway until midnight. officers are orchestrating traffic moves in the midst of the chaos caused by the fire. this is what the embarcadero looked at like at 8:00 tonight. unaware that a fire had broken out at a building on pier 29. >> wow. i guess i will get off the embarcadero as quickly as i can. >> reporter: getting off the embarcadero was a challenge. the detours caused delays for commuters during the evening rush hour. >> i'm going home to petaluma right now. i've got a little ways to go.

this traffic is horrible. >> reporter: to fight the fire, crews ran water hoses. services in both directions were shut down. muni tells us, the f line serves 20,000 riders each day, inconveniencing many tourists who ride this route. >> i said we'll just start walking. >> reporter: as night started to fall, neighbors sidestep the inconvenience as they walked their dogs. these visitors managed to get around on a pedi cab. >> this was a great place. >> did it hurt business? >> we were the last one to move out of pier 29. >> reporter: back here live, we're giving you an up close look at the building. you can see firefighter crews are still here cleaning up.

that is the latest, rainstorming along the waterfront, ktvu, channel 2 news. today's fire brought back memories. may of 1984, a five-alarm fire. the wood was all dry and ready to burn. police many piers are treated with creosote as a preservative, which only adds fuel to the fire. >> we received a number of pictures from today's pier 29 fire from viewers. this first one was sent by matthew thompson. you can see a lot of smoke from the fire. this is also where police closed off the embarcadero, forcing cars to turn onto side streets. this shows firefighters in action, pouring water onto the front of pier 29. you can also see where pieces, big pieces of the facade there on the pier fell during the

fire. if you ever have pictures of breaking news, we'd sure like to see them. it's really easy to send them to us. email them to photos@ktvu.com or post them on our facebook page. a berkely home was hit by gunfire and bullet casings dotted the streets this evening, after a shooting that injured one man. the incident happened just before 5:00 tonight. police say they received many calls about the shooting. when they arrived on the scene, they could not find anyone injured. however, a man did show up at a nearby hospital with a non-life- threatening shooting. the family of a berkely man filed a claim against the city, alleging that a delayed police response is partly to blame for his death. he was killed back in february. he had called police to report an intruder on his property. in the claim, his family said

an officer would be coming soon. however, berkely police did not respond immediately, because it was not seen as an emergency. about 17 minutes after the first call, his wife called 911 to say her husband was being attacked. the claim filed today is a precursor to a lawsuit. the defense rested today in a sexual abuse case against jerry sandusky without calling the former penn state assistant football coach to the witness stand. he is facing 51 counts of child sex abuse. eight men testified that he molested them when they were boys. others testified that they stayed at sandusky's house, and nothing inappropriate happened. the judge says he plans to sequester the jury during deliberations. if conviblghted, sandusky could spend the rest of his life in prison. here in the bay area, a high profile trial began today in san jose. a man is accused of beating up

a priest. he allegedly did it, because the priest molested him as a child. >> reporter: will lynch looks somber as he arrived at the courthouse this morning. but despite the demeanor, this trial is what he wanted. the 44-year-old is accused of beating up a priest at a priest retirement home in may of 2010. a priest that lynch claims viciously raped him, and his younger brother on a camping trip in 1975. in court, clips were shown from an interview, in which lynch described the attack. getting aroused, whatever. then his eyes changed to hate. like anger, hate. >> we're glad for will to get his story out. >> reporter: today the prosecutor put him on the stand. lindner testified lynch showed

up, pretending to deliver a document, then began pummeling lindner. lindner then denied he had ever molested the two boys. >> he has so little self- awareness and shame, that he sits there and perjers himself. >> the message is that pedophile priests should be put in jail like the rest of the pedophiles. >> reporter: he believes lindner is committing perjury, and is prepared to cross examination him. ktvu, channel 2 news. tonight, at 10:30, we talk to two victims of abuse who are closy watching the lynch case and the sandusky trial. some say the trials opened, will open old wounds, but also, they have a sense of justice. nearly two dozen federal

agents today, descended on the scene that shut down bart. agents from the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms are using their expertise to determine what started that fire. among those searching for clues, chemical engineers, explosive experts, and a 5-year- old labrador retriever trained to sniff out accelerants. >> this is a whodunit. now, it's not quite as fancy of a whodunit when you figure out that it was an accident that did it. but it's really cool when you figure out, it's a whodunit, and it's a crime, now we got to figure out who did it. >> the atf says it's also bringing in a crane, so investigators can take apart the wreckage piece by piece. a grass fire was quickly put under control. the fire started next to highway 101 on the coyote creek golf course. cal fire tells us about 15

acres were burned. cries were concerned about high power lines in the area. but cal fire says in the end, there was no damage. tonight, we're learning that the fire at the base of mount diablo ended up causing about $750,000 in damage. the flames destroyed a 100-year- old cabin and several acres of brushland. authorities say no one was living in the cabin, tonight there is still no word on what started that fire. one of the hawaiian islands is sold. the bay area island. >> it's a big enough crime that a task force has been launched in contra costa county. >> back here in just tone minutes, a major cool down coming your way. as much as 20 degrees in some cities. i'll show you which ones. >> 10,000, 14,000, $20,000 in loans with little or no documentation. what else taxpayers were told about an alleged embezzlement

when his felony embezzlement case returns to court here in redwood city. parents, teachers, and other taxpayers attended tonight's school board meeting to find out how superintendent timothy hanretty could allegedly steal thousands from the district. >> i think this has come as a shock to a lot of people, because he is a nice guy. but you can't arc with the data. >> reporter: the data according to the district attorney's office shows he spent $100,000 earmarked to put solar panels on two campuses to instead make improvements to his own home. >> i'm disturbed that nobody was watching the store. that henretty had this job that he was not overseen by anyone. >> reporter: he is also facing

felony counts stemming from his previous job with woodside elementary district. >> we were all just standing there, going really? >> reporter: they planned to put safeguards in place, but it may be too late. the district faces a $1.1 million budget deficit. >> they're going to increase class sizes, decrease teachers, move teachers around. >> reporter: yesterday, hanretty pleaded not guilty to the charges. a san francisco couple accused of killing a man who they claimed turned their 17- year-old daughter into a prostitute appeared in court today, accused of his murder. 22-year-old calvin snead was shot to death. friends and family of the couple showed up at the hall of justice today to support them. prosecutors claim the couple also traveled to los angeles

county eight days before the murder, and shot and wounded snead. the district attorney says he can understand why the parents are so angry, but says this was a planned killing. >> a father and a mother here became the judge, the jury, and the executioner. the problem is, you know, that vigilante murder is still murder. >> defense attorneys said the two did not enter pleas today, because they're awaiting more information from the prosecution. the alameda county board of supervisors today accepted the resignation of david muhammad. a female deputy accused him of sexual harassment and assault. a third party found the claim to be unsubstantiated. vallejo's police chief announced today he is retiring. he served as the city's top cop for 17 years.

he says it's time to pursue other endeavors, such as practicing law part time in pleasant hill. his last day on the job will be july 1. it is official. californians will have two competing tax hike initiatives when they go to the polls this november. governor brown's would increase income taxes on californians who earn more than $250,000 a year. the other measure would raise the state income tax on all, but the poorest earners on a sliding scale. both initiatives are trying to close the budget debt. ktvu's mike mibach tells us, they're not going after the thieves, they're going after the recyclers who are buying the stolen metal. >> reporter: business up and

running as usual at pleasant paper recycling in concord today. a place home to a lot of copper, and yesterday, it was raided by a contra costa task force. they were searched by law enforcement officers. >> yeah. >> go get them. >> go get them. >> reporter: today, the contra costa da office says the 6th month sting found the recyclers were buying metal no questions asked. items conphi scadded included copper wire, and ramps. >> the goal of this operation is to cut off the profit centers for the thieves, and force the junk dealers and recyclers to comply with state law. >> reporter: a spokeswoman told me today, pg and e has lost more than $5 million in copper during a six year stretch. >> our role is really to just identify our material that has

been stolen from us when it comes to these copper theft task forces. >> it's extremely dangerous. attempting to stealing live wire, has resulted in serious injury. >> reporter: the gm of pleasant paper recycling told us off camera, his company has nothing to hide, and follows state laws. the d.a. says data seized during the raid will take weeks to analyze. he says the recyclers could face fines and penalties if charged. mayor lee is promising to go after those who vandalized parks to the extent of the law. so far this year, the rec ration park department says it has spent $150,000 on cleanup. here's some of the specific things mayor lee plans to do. hire nine park patrol officers. have police enforce property

who is accused of hitting a pedestrian and killing him appeared in court today, and pleaded not guilty. 36-year-old chris lucarie was accused of running red lights and stop signs and speeding down a hill and striking a 71- year-old in a crosswalk at market and castro. prosecutors blamed what they call his need for speed. >> it wasn't just simply one violation of vehicle code. there were multiple violations of vehicle code. showing a complete disregard for anybody else but himself. >> his attorney released a statement saying he looks forward to the day when he can express his deepest condolences. a new law that charges a thief for single use bags went into effect today in sunnyvale. a 10% charge for single use

plastic bags. the new ordinance takes effect at grocery, liquor, and drugstores. summer has arrived, the solstice was at 4:09 this afternoon. fittingly on this first day of summer, the alameda county fair opened for its 100th year. it is expecting record breaking attendance and a few lucky folks can attend for free. >> reporter: entering the fair grounds is like stepping into a time machine, where a century old tradition meets modern time. crowds turned out for the opening of the alameda county fair. in sweltering heat, people lined up to fly through the air, and take a splash in the carnival rides. new attractions, mixed with more traditional fair, such as pony rides. >> now, kids who you know western part of that generation to see the farming, they're able to come out and see, you

file sexual abuse cases are bringing back old memories for victims. victims say the trials are both painful and inspiring. patty. >> reporter: well victims of abuse meet here in walnut creek. these trials are giving them something different. catharsis and the courage to speak out. this private support group has a new member tonight. high profile cases, like the jerry sandusky case. >> i got four today that were triggered by the will lidge trial in santa clara. >> reporter: lidge is facing charges for beating the priest who raped him. many consider him a hero. >> to be willing to come

forward and say something. it's a very personal violation. >> reporter: tim says he was 13 when a priest raped him. that priest died before he was able to confront him. >> 30 years after the fact. >> reporter: seeing accused abusers like jerry sandusky in court provides many victims a sense of vicarious justice. >> every time a perpetrator is held accountable, you feel good about it. >> in one sense, it's a relief that you got to that point. >> reporter: but says the catharsis provided by a trial is limited. because the pain never dies. they hope these high profile trials will continue to encourage victims to speak up and their share their stories. we have some new information tonight about the body found yesterday in the

oakland estuary. police say he had a history of mental problems. the body was found underwater with weights tied to his head. authorities said they also found literature about preparing for death. the republican controlled house vs. president obama and attorney general eric holder. as shelby lynn reports, this comes as president obama used a power that he's never used before. >> a house committee has voted along party lines to hold eric holder in content of congress for failure to turn over subpoenaed documents related to the fast and furious sting operation. president obama had asserted his presidential privilege. allowing the justice department to withhold the information. as the result of the program, more than 1,000 weapons were lost in mexico and may have ended up in the hands of drug

cartels. >> our purpose has never been to hold the attorney general in contempt. our purpose has been to get the information the committee needs to complete its work. that it's not only entitled to do, but obligated to do. >> reporter: in a statement, he said the justice department has already provided thousands of documents. he says the committee chairman, darrell ica has taken unnecessary action intended to invoke an argument between congress and the executive branch. now some committee members are interested in what's in those documents. >> why would the president claim executive privilege unless he felt there was something that should not be known to this committee and possibly to the public. >> reporter: the full house is expected to consider the recommendation for holding the

attorney general in contempt next week. shelby lynn reporting. the union for american airlines pilots today rejected the company's latest contract offer. this clears the way for a judge this friday. layoffs are expected. american airlines filed for bankruptcy protection last november. starbucks wants to expand, and be known for more than just its coffee. customers will be able to blend their own tea. a lackluster day for the stock markets today even after action by the fed, the dow lost 12 points. the nasdaq rose just a fraction. the fed said it would keep long term interest rates low. it also saided the economy wasn't growing as fast as it had forecast earlier. nearly 100 folks gathered to mark the summer solstice

with a bonfire. the group celebrated with storytelling and songs. the summer solstice is the longest day of the year. for pagans, this is a day to celebrate the power of the sun. the man who created the rainbow flag is raising money for gay causes with special reproductions of his flag. he signed and numbered them. he created the first rainbow flag in 1978 in san francisco, for the gay freedom day parade. every year, he does some sort of reproduction to mark the anniversary. in nine minutes, sf pride takes over this weekend, but some people are upset over who is sponsoring the event. why those protesters are forming what they're calling occu-pride. a freeway beating caught on camera. what the apparent victim says about this video posted to youtube. >> and i'm back here in just ten minutes. we're talking about a major

firefighters along the north coast made quick work of a grass fire in mendocino today. crews said the flames broke out

shortly after 11:00 today. no damage was reported, and the cause of the fire is still being looked into. the highway patrol is asking for the public's help to try too find out just what happened after a video surfaced, apparently showing a man beaten on a freeway in a los angeles. the video was recorded on june 12. the television channel kabc says it has located the man who had been beaten. but he says he doesn't remember much of what happened. a reminder that you can get ktvu news to go on your cell phone now. download the ktvu app, click the live icon and watch all of our newscasts live. police in antioch need help locating a 32-year-old man accused of kidnapping two

brothers. police say ehrman montiel kidnapped them yesterday. he is believed to be driving a 2000 gray nissan maxima, with california license 6hlp460, or washington play, afz0446. the injured man was treated for his injuries. in news of the world tonight, in afghanistan, a suicide bomb attack killed three american soldiers and 16 afghans. it's the third attack on americans in three days. militants also stormed a nato base in one, and attacked a checkpoint in another. in greece, there is finally a new government. the new prime minister took the oath of office today. the fourth man in that offense in just the past eight months. his conservative party will

lead a three party coalition. he supports keeping international bailouts, but he wants to renegotiate some of the terms. greece is facing some very tough austerity measures. in england, there is word one of adel's songs may have healing powers. a 7-year-old girl has suffered a brain hemorrhage and was in a coma. doctors feared the worst, but when her mother sang an adel song to her, the girl woke up. now she is learning to walk again and regaining some of her speech. it is a pinnacle of pride. why this year's pride parade will be accompanied with protesters.

francisco, and organizers are getting ready for the pinnacle event, sunday's parade. how this year's theme incorporates a message against corporate greed. >> reporter: work crews today were still building the last of the fleet of floats the public will see. some are frustrated the event has so many corporate sponsors, including wells-fargo and bank of america. >> the foreclosure epidemic is happening here in san francisco as well as everyone else, to have banks that have involved with that, sponsors pride, it's obvious they're trying to buy goodwill in the community. >> reporter: he has joined other gay activists, some from occupy san francisco, who have joined a group called occu- pride. they are planning a protest during the parade. >> we're going to do an action to remind folks, we're a movement, not a market.

organizers say it's the largest transgender march worldwide. and the dike march happens saturday night at deloris park. a new survey has growned lexus the best when it comes to quality. a survey of 2012 model vehicles, lexus is toyota's luxury brand. this is the second year in a row, it has taken top honors. it was followed by two other luxury car makers, jaguar and porsche tied for second place. cadillac came in third, followed by honda and acura. after a two year hiatus, there is word a popular 4th of july show will be back. >> it's our heritage. i think it's money well spent. >> budget problems forced the

city of antioch to cancel its event for the past two summers. fundraising is still going on, organizers say any extra money will go toward a fireworks show for next year. it's starting to cool off out there right now. still pretty warm in the central valley. you can see 78 in stockton right now. why do i point that out? tomorrow's highs in our inland valleys are going to be right about where stockton is now. temperatures tomorrow are going to come down big time. these are the highs today. some cities 15 to 20 degrees cooler. as we head into thursday. of course, this makes for much better air quality. drops the fire danger way down, and it forces you and everybody else who gets going around the bay area, to maybe take a sweatshirt with them, or a jacket. it's going to be cool in the mornings, cool in the evenings. it's not going to be cold, just not going to be mid-90s.

there's going to be mid-70s tomorrow. this weekend, it will be the same. a cool pattern stays in tact through the weekend. major cooling tomorrow. 20degrees is a major drop. some winds will start to gust as well. up to fairfield and vacaville. if it was winter, it would be raining, and raining, and raining. but it's not winter. there's not a lot of moisture with this. there will be rain north. i mean fort bragg. for us, it's just below average temperatures, and gusty winds. that's tomorrow. then the cool air stays, it sticks around. so it's going to be kind of like a spring week, coming up here. maybe the mid-spring, late spring. tomorrow morning as that low gets close, the fog pushes well inland. today will be the warmest day of the week. look at the cooling influences in the valley. you can almost see that moist, cool air splitting the 90s. the 80s and 90s, and just leaving us with 60s, 70s, and 50s right along the coast.

that really is great news, if you're a firefighter, you can take a little break. good for air quality too. temperatures don't just trend down tomorrow, but trend down on friday, and they're going to stay cool through the bay area weekend. classic cool weather pattern that will bring temperatures down tomorrow, most noticeably. after that, they sort of level off, and you'll see that in the five-day forecast. 76 in fairfield tomorrow. it's not cold. it's just not as warm as it was today. mid-60s. inle santa clara valley, good air quality, mid-70s. along the coast, plenty of fog and clouds. this pattern will give you more sunshine than typical. the five-day forecast with the weekend in view, different kind of weather. look at those top numbers. those are all 70s, and mid-70s. >> clouds too. >> it would be interesting. but way down in the fire danger, much better air quality.
