story. tara moriarty is right near the uc campers, what neighbors saw and heard. roots neighbors described a tense moment when a young man in this green victorrian ran out screaming his girlfriend was trapped inside the house. he and some neighbors tried to save her but it was too late. flames broke out and witnesses say flames were hooting out of the back of the house where at least eight people were staying last night. neighbors woke up to the smell of smoke and the sounds of screaming. he and the young woman tried to save the woman but the smoke was too thick and they had to run out of the house. >> it is so sad because you know everybody has somebody who cares about them and you know

you can't help the tragedy, it looked like they covered her up on the stretcher. firefighters tried cpr but it was too late, she died at the scene. >> i encourage everyone, to check everything and an early detection of fire is what saves lives. the victims' boyfriend was taken to the hospital for smoke inn lallation. so crews. >> thorough to make sure there were no fires lurking in the wall. two people inside the house at the time are talking to the red cross and it looks like they have a place to stay. meantime, they are trying to

inside this house, a green victorrian has now been roped off and investigators are trying to figure out what caused this fire. seven people made it out, one woman was trapped inside. her boyfriend ran out of the house when flames broke out and was screaming for help. his next door neighbor ran in but couldn't save her. >> it was incredibly smokey, i was concerned about getting out myself. there was no way any of us could have gotten in there. >> reporter: a few minutes later officers arrived and started rescue operations. >> when you come across a house with heavy fire or smoke knowing people are in the building something kicks in, you go into over drive, we work quickly and arable to just search to find people.

that is what our job does. >> reporter: now crews tried to resuscitate the victim, but it was too late. they were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. all the victims do appear to be in their 20s . as we said, we are trying to figure out how this all started. it appears in speaking to the victims they didn't hear anything going off but more things should be completed. firefighters in santa clara responded to a house fire near the campbell border. now the two people living inside the home did make it out safely. it took firefighters 30 minutes to put out that fire. today with engineers and up expecters, they will go back to

so a big cooling trends out to the delta. not only windy at times but it will last well into the weekend, weekend temperatures wit southwest already and we can say goodbye, much cooler today as temperatures, and the stronger one will start to set up shop. it is tough to break 100-degree temperatures but today with that southwest, up in the north bay some low ever 0s. you can see that system carving itself out and that will increase low clouds and fog, give us some drizzle into today

with contempt of congress. holder can still prevent that vote from happening if he turns over at least some of the documents about the fast and furious gun tracking operation. back here at home, a woman died early this morning right near the uc berkeley campus. we are told her boyfriend and another person was hurt in that fire. from the windows they saw an orange glow and here a woman screaming. the top aid admitted the violent crime epidemic stretches well beyond 100 blocks. the key statistic that was used to sell the anticrime program was grossly inflated. a neighbor took heroic action in responding to an early morning fire in vallejo.

claudine wong has been there this morning and joins us from the scene, claudine wong? >> reporter: they are lucky to be alive this morning, you can see the damage to this court in vallejo, some of the residents will board up as much as they can but really the entire roof is gone. we want to show you some new pictures of the fire and this was taken by the first officers on the scene. the police officers were the first to call this in when they spotted it two miles away. they were not sure where it was but they spotted it and called it in and they said when they got here, the people were already trying to get out of the home but they went in and continued to get everyone out. >> the roof was hot, it was on fire. you can see flames were coming

from the vents inside. >> moments after the couple and their daughter made it out, that roof did collapse, by the time they got out, 100% of it is now gone. one of the reasons a rescuer is on the way is because a neighbor also spotted the fire. flames were so big, i just went into like -- i don't know how to describe it, auto pilot, i just started banging on the doors, i didn't stop, i didn't think to stop, i just wanted to wake them up and get them out. >> again, they were able to get out safely but the home is destroyed and all the photo

were heavily damaged. if we can come back out here live to the scene i want to take a look at the home next door and upwards. >> reporter: if you look at the two windows at the top of the house, the heat was so hot it shattered the windows and that was actually close and it was just sustained everybody -- sustained and at this point one of the challenges for the firefighters is that the roof collapsed and the fire collapsed the basement. the cause is still under investigation, ktvu channel 2 morning news, claudine wong. it is affected by a huge
