"mornings on 2" starts now. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's thursday, june 21st. we begin with a heartbreaking story from berkeley. firefighters are trying to determine what sparked a fatal house fire near the uc campus. the sights and sounds coming from that house terrified neighbors. tara is live with more. >> reporter: good morning. some of the questions that investigators are gonna be asking the person who owns this house is were the smoke detectors working? they have to be on every floor? you can see this a three-story home. were the batteries changed on a regular basis.

by law, owner must keep them updated, changing out the alarms every ten years. if the owner fails to do that, they could be held accountable. it was a very chaotic scene around here at 2:30. one woman was trapped inside the home off lorena street. her boyfriend ran out of the house when flames broke out and was screaming for help. his next door neighbor ran in but could not help her. >> we were screaming -- we heard screaming and then everybody had to get out. it was too smoky. >> just knowing somebody was up there that you couldn't help was the hardest thing. >> reporter: firefighters tried to resuscitate the woman but

she died at the scene. the chief says tragedies like this can be avoided if you have a working smoke alarm to wake you up and the victims that we spoke to who are all tenants tell us that they do not remember any alarm going off. firefighters are coleing through the rubble to see if they can figure out what triggered this fire. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. a home smoke detector appears to have been a lifesaver in alamo. this is video will -- you will see only on 2. the smoke detector went off immediately and that may have saved the life of the couple who lived there. >> i looked up at the alarm and

we're following developing news from vallejo right now. crews are investigating an early-morning house fire. claudine wong joins us live from the scene at round hill court. we understand a neighbor took heroic action in a very dangerous situation. >> reporter: yes. all she was thinking about was getting the couple and their daughter out of their home, a couple she's known since she was a child. take a look. this is 132 round hill. you can see the damage is significant. firefighters are still out there keeping an eye on the situation. residents are planning to board 24 up. everyone got out safely i want you to take a look at the fire when it was at its height. we got these from the first responding police officers on the scene who actually saw
