a tragic accident in the south bay after a vehicle goes out of control. that's the top story. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. we're following breaking news out of mountain view. a pedestrian has been struck and killed by a car. it happened just before 9:30 this morning california street in front of the maplewood

apartment complex. newschopper2 was over the scene a half-hour ago. you can see a gray sedan crashed into the side of the road. there are reports the victim was waiting at a bus stop when the car lost control and struck the pedestrian. a ktvu reporter is heading to the scene right now. we hope to bring you more information a little later in this newscast. and there's breaking news out of morgan hill where a gas leak has forced the evacuation of a preschool. it happened at west main avenue near del monte avenue. pg&e says a construction crew accidentally struck a natural gas line. it happened in front of the big redhouse learning center. this is a live look at the scene. you can see some construction workers and what looks like a ditch, possibly some construction work going on in the area. children from the preschool are waiting inside a nearby bank

until they can have their parents pick them up. claudine wong is live to explain exactly what the atf will be doing at the site of the b.a.r.t. fire. >> reporter: take a look behind me. you can see what they are trying to do is get rid of some of that scaffolding mangled on the corner of the building. this will be the scene at least for the next few days but there is an end in sight. the atf says this could be wrapped up by the end of the week and we may get some answers. the heavy equipment moved in as crews start to clear away the mangled mess that was the building's scaffolding. >> some of it is collapsed in. some of it is collapsed out. >> reporter: the atf says this is like a puzzle, one of the most complex it tackles. >> we're gonna take it apart. and we're gonna put it back

together. >> reporter: this morning crews began working from the least damaged area to the most damaged. if yesterday was about surveying and mapping, today, tomorrow and the next day will be about heavy lifting and once investigators get past the mess, they will start sifting through what's mex. the investigation is expect to wrap up by sunday and monday and the atf says it's possible we could have some answers. >> the straight answer is we could have an answer. the reason i tell you that way is because there's three determinations in the fire community -- one is arson, the other accidental and the third -- and the thin one is undetermined and sometimes we -- and the third one is undetermine and sometimes we run into that where we can't find out what happened. >> reporter: back here live, we all know how close these b.a.r.t. tracks one near the building. they wanted to move the crane in but they could only do it a

certain distance from the tracks. so they are trying to maneuver that. they think they have the logistics ficked out and the heavy lifting gets underway. and they are hope to being close to wrapping up with an answer. >> all right. thank you, claudine. investigators believe they know where a fire started at san francisco's pier 29. the fire began at:00 at the foot of chestnut street and did $2.4 million in damage. investigators focused on an electrical box where they believe where the fire started. they are looking for the cause now. they are -- no one was injured but the firefight halted traffic until early this morning. a two-alarm fire left a young woman dead near the uc berkeley campus.

the fire started around 2:30 on lorena street near shadock avenue. the young woman died in spite of desperate attempts to thank her. >> reporter: frantic moments for this woman at this victorian home street. >> i ran downstairs as fast as i could. >> reporter: the fire broke out at 2:30 this morning. >> the girl's name was meredith. we were screaming for her to come down and everybody had to get out. it was too smoky. >> reporter: and one man was trying to save his girlfriend trapped inside the planes. bob, who lives next door, ran to help. >> yeah, i don't want to glorify what i did. all i did was go in there and come out. there was no way any of us could have gotten in there. >> reporter: when firefighters arrived, they were able to get the woman out. they threed to resuscitate her but she i high died at the

scene. >> i felt the worse coming out of the house, just snowing that somebody was out there. >> reporter: foyer officials will be focusing their investigation on the back of the home where they believe the fire started and where the most damage seems to be. they are also looking closely at the smoke detectors to make sure they were working. none of the tenants appeared to be in their 20s. >> having a fire in the middle of the night, people are not used to waking up. i encouraged everybody. >> reporter: landlords are required to deep smoke detectors on all floors working, change the batteries regularly and replace alarms with new one -- with new ones. >> reporter: he told us that the home was properly equipped with detecters and an alarm system.

now investigators will have to figure out what went wrong. in berkeley, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a vallejo family narrowly escaped what firefighters say could have been a deadly fire this morning. coming up in about seven minutes, how they were rescued by a neighbor determined to get them out of the burning house. there are new questions about oakland mayor jean quan's signature crime-fighting tab that focuses on the city's most dangerous 100 blocks. paul chambers joins us live with a new analysis of the plan and the numbers don't add up. paul? >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. the mayor's 100 block initiative was started with controversy and it's still receiving scrutiny. >> reporter: this map shows mayor quan's 100 block plan. in october, she said 90% of the homicides and shootings occur.

eight months later, it's now being reported that the top aide says those figures were wrong and a little more than half of the homicide and 42% of the shootings happened beyond those -- >> i don't know. i said publicly then you will be responsible for -- you take the credit or the blame. >> reporter: stats from opd show crime is up 20% with 54 homicides. councilmember de la fuente -- >> she just did this on her hone. she never consulted -- her own. she never consulted anyone. >> reporter: last week, they said ha tonally 20% of oakland's homicides and shootings took place in the city's most violent blocks. >> if you are gonna do it, do it in the right way. >> the worse part is you trying

accused of beating up the priest who he says molested him 30 years ago. robert honda was at the courthouse. >> reporter: will lynch came to the courthouse expecting to hear more testimony from father jerold lindner. he faces charges for molestation. lynch for years has claimed that he and his younger brother were raped and sexually assaulted by lindner during a camping trip in 1985. lynch is being accused of perjury when he said he never molested the boys and lindner has gotten a hour to address that. it turns out a -- a lawyer to address that. it turns out a witness confronted the priest as he was being brought to the room. >> the only direct quote i could give you is, deb said

a home smoke detector appears to have been a lifesaver in a fire in alamo. the couple safely escaped. there's still no word on how the fire started. a vallejo family was awakened by their neighbor this morning and rescued from their burning home. flames were spotted just after 3:00 this morning a at the house on -- morning at the house on roundhill court. another neighbor took these pictures of the fire. the first neighbor called 911. but before firefighters arrived, she said she went into autopilot to get the neighbors

right now we want to to go back to our top story. breaking news in mountain view. a ped has been struck by a car. sal's on the scene and has this report. sal -- a pedestrian has been struck by a car. sal's on the scene and has this report. >> reporter: good morning. i want to bring in the spokesperson for the police department. can you tell us what happened? >> reporter: a vehicle hit a ped. it was determined the ped was -- hit a pedestrian. it was determined the pedestrian was deceased. the car ended up halfway down the block. pretty violent collision. we'll still working at what rate of speed it occurred.
