around to head south and pick up passengers. investigators honed in on one part of the pier 29 building as the possible source of the fire in san francisco yesterday afternoon. ktvu's david stevenson is live there now with the impact that continues tonight on that neighborhood. david? >> reporter: look behind me, you can see the crew, they are cutting away the charred portions of pier 29. the structure was red tagged this morning but we got a look inside before it was closed off. >> reporter: damage to san francisco's pier 29 is $2.3 million. officials vowed to restore it. >> we are working with the city to ensure that we restore the part as much as possible. >> reporter: wednesday's fire burned through the front part of the building, tearing holes

in the roof. >> you can see. >> reporter: we went inside today and learnedvers believe the -- learned investigators believe the fire began in this corner. >> that is under investigation. there were workers in the building yesterday earlier in the day. >> reporter: flames raced from the floor to the roof, charring the timbers. 3508s of water lined the loor -- pools of water lined the floor. they are running on generator power. >> there are processors here. we had to work hard to get the electrical restored. >> reporter: most of the damage was at the front of the building making this portion of the embarcardero off limits. >> sidewalk area is closed off as of now. we hope to reopen by this weekend. >> reporter: officials insist the fire won't effect america's

the priest who was beaten took the stand. look under the news tab. the former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky sexual abuse case, his son accused jerry sandusky of abusing him. matt sandusky is now 33 years old. his attorneys say they went to authorities with the allegations. matt sandusky was adopted through the 62nd -- through the second mile foundation. we have learned the name of the man who was killed at a bus stop today. 50-year-old william wear died this morning after being hit by a car on california street. witnesses say the car jumped the curve at a bus stop and slammed into wear and it appeared the driver was

speeding. things are back to normal tonight after a gas leak prompted evacuations. a third party contractor working in the area ruptured a gas line at 9:00 a.m. this morning on west main avenue. several homes and a preschool were evacuated. the line was capped and evacuations were lifted by 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. new information on a story we have been following. the arrest warrant for chien- ming -- christopher. there were details and disturbing information from people who witnessed witnessed the accident in march. one of the witnesses described the crash as bone crushing. with such a severe blow people yelled. he is charged with

the president announced last week that could effect 800,000 illegal immigrants. now charities of the east bay will hold information sessions at its richmond office. they are planned for 1:00 thursday afternoon. officials say they are hearing from voters concerned about election mail they received. some got voter registration cards with their names and addresses already filled in. a spokeswoman said they are legal and common as long as the name and address is correct. reliability and affordability used to be the concern for car buyers. now help is taking the front seat as consumers search for the best car. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar has the new trend in complaints. >> reporter: high technology in

a neighbor is being credited with saving asley family from their burning home. these are images. authorities say the home on round hill court caught fire after 2:30 a.m. this morning. a woman returning home from work saw the flames and started pound thong door. no one ended up being hurt. the cause is under investigation. a woman was killed in a berkeley house fire this morning despite attempts to save her. it was reported at 2:30 a.m. this morning. the neighbor tried to get into the house to help but was pushed back by smoke.

from lawsuits. lawmakers and groups were notified the governor is dropping the legislation. it would have limited the circumstances in which a judge could block construction of the project to the serious cases. republicans lost their bid to get a pension reform measure on the november ballot. it failed during a 24-13 vote on the floor of the senate. they say it would be taken up during the session but say a budget deal has to be completed first. unemployment claims fell last week but not by much. weekly applications dipped by 2,000 to 387,000. that is down from 389,000 the week before. employers added 73,000 jobs a month in april and may. the job numbers were part of the reason today was the worst day on wall street in three
