light. now let's go back to pam. a fire in oakland led to an illegal grow operation and the discovery of hundreds of marijuana plants. ktvu tara moriarty is on lacy avenue this morning with how that fire started. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. you can see all of the cop cars lined up alodge the street and a lot of officers are inside of this house which you can't see very well because it's dark. there is no electricity right now. we are waiting for officers to come out. authorities went in around 3:00 after getting their search warrant. within two hours we are told they should be coming out here with marijuana plants. just a few minutes ago we noticed officers hauling out large fans and lamps. how they stumbled upon this grow operation last night around up 30 firefighters respond to acauline the 7,000 block of lacy avenue. an electrical box had caught fire and authorities say the suspects had rigged their electricity to illegally root power from a nearby power pole. the fire department notified

police that found 300 pot plants inside. we are tole police have made no arrests and the fire caused minimal damage. we will stay on top of this and see if neighbors had any idea a grow operation was next to them. and hopefully this morning we will be checking with oakland police to see who is responsible for this marijuana grow operation. we are live in oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco'sth thicks committee has released some of sheriff ross mirkarimi's text messages. he exchanged the messages with his wife on a domestic violence charge back in january. most involve how he should publicly respond to the new years eve argument with his wife that resulted in an official misconduct investigation. now in one message mirkarimi says quote, i think we need to organize our side. and he calls the case a political witch hunt. the two men ordered to stand trial in the beating of

giants fan bryan stow are due back in the los angeles courtroom. both men are scheduled to be formerly charged in the vicious beating outside dodgers stadium last year. happening right now a car crash causing a power outage in santa rosa. a car slammed into a utility pole just after 11:30 last night near the intersection of mendocino college avenues. it knocked out power to 979 pg&e customers. power should be restored by 7:30 this morning. 4:33 is the time right now. home burglars are becoming a growing problem in the city of brentwood. they are mostly happening in the deer ridge and shadow lake neighborhoods. police say there have been 92 burglars just this year. most breaks in taking place during the day when the people are at work.

both have active neighborhood watch programs and there are extra police patrolling the area. in oakland new safety measures around the airport are paying off. recent stafftistings show an increase in rental car break ins but a few weeks ago police posted an electronic sign nearby warning drivers to keep their valuables out of sight. >> if you have any items in your car place them in the trunk out of you or take them with you. you don't want to have the criminal come along and have a quick and easy target. >> police say they have seen a decrease in car break ins in the last month and they are working with rental car companies, local businesses, and airport to educate guests about staying safe in oakland. it has been one week since a group of protestors started a sit-in. they will stay lake view elementary until the district changes its mind. lake view was one of five schools closed because of budget issues.

police have told the protestors they are breaking the law and should leave. 18-year-old man is dead after crashing his motorcycle into a car in san jose. that happened just before 8:30 last night. police say the man was turning and hit a car. he died at the hospital. his female passenger has nonlife threatening injuries. the driver of the car was not hurt and police say she is cooperating with investigators. the jerry sandusky child abuse trial is in the hands of jurors. coming up before they continue deliberations this morning, the testimony they want to hear again. plus the new abuse allegations brought on by a member of sandusky's own family. in election 2012 today president obama reaching out to latino voters. the same group republican presidential candidate mitt

insurgents stormed a lake side hotel near kabul. army channel commanders say they were armed with machine guns, rocket propeller grenades, and explosives. most of the people killed were civilians. it did end when the final attacker was killed early this morning. one of the kidnappers is a free man after spending more than 30 years in prison. 57-year-old richard shone fell -- schonenfeld. the three kidnapped a bus full of children and then buried them bus and all at a lover mother quarry. their bus driver escaped and led the children to safety.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's 4:51. you are looking at quite a scene. dozens of children were sent to a hospital in indianapolis after chemicals made them sick. 71 people. county health officials are not sure if chemicals spilled into the pool but the park will remain closed until the investigation is complete. . back here in the bay area this weekend crews hope to reopen the sidewalk area at pier 29 in san francisco. a ktvu news crew went inside the billing. heavily damaged by wednesday's fire. it tore holes in the roof and collapsed part of the front of the building. investigators looked for the cause oftener. they are checking on construction in the building a few hours before that fire started. >> we are working with the city

with a 20 miles an hour wind. this system will continue to keep the fog going. it sweeps through and should break things up. low clouds, fog. windy, sunny later on. highs today really cool. 50s on the coast. even around the bay. 60s mainly inland or very, very low 70s. looks like about the same saturday. a little bit better on sunday and gradual improvement not a lot but early next week. pamela. murder charges were filed against a 19-year-old woman accused of hitting and killing a man with her car. the man was hit outside a party on 61st avenue on saturday night. police say the woman got into her car after some sort of altercation and hit 33-year-old lewis vie laskey of oakland. she was arrested a few hours later and has been in jail ever since. prosecutors in santa clara county are looking into possible charges in a deadly crash in mountain view. that happened yesterday morning

not far from elle camino ryal. a man was hit and killed when a car jumped a curb near a bus stop. >> police have identified the man killed as 50-year-old william of mountain view. the 21-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and taken to the hospital. investigators say drugs and alcohol did not factor into that crash. two people escaped injury after a car crashed into their home. the side of the home is significantly damaged. the driver lost control and crashed into it about 8:00 last night. it also caused a mess inside the house. taking out a kitchen sink and water pipe. pg&e also shut off a gas line as a precaution.
