a small fire in oakland leads to a big discovery of a marijuana grow operation. tara moriarty is near a home on lacy avenue to tell us how electricity may be to blame for everything that has been happening. what is going on? >> reporter: you never realize that the electricity bill for this house was $2,000 a month. that is not eastbound counting the electricity they stole from a nearby power pole. that is $4,000 a month. so a total of $6,000 a month if they use at this house you see. that is really how police discovered the grow operation which they are boarding upright now. this house was sourcing so much power it sparked a fire in the electrical box outside around 7:30 last night. when firefighters responded to the home on the 7,000 block of lacy avenue and notified police. suspects had rigged wires to illegally rig wire to a nearby power pole. they found 3,000 pot plants inside. police have highway no arrests
6:03 am
so far the fire did cause minimal damage. officers spent hours dismantling the grow operation. hand cutting the plants, bagging them for evidence. it doesn't look like a lot of marijuana but that is because they compress it into the bag. they say it's a pretty large operation for the house which had an intricate wiring operation. they are loading the marijuana plants into one of the cars right here and all of the fans and lamps and eventually all of the marijuana will go into an incinerator. meanwhile investigators will have to figure out who is responsible for growing the marijuana. you can hear behind me they are boarding up so nobody breaks into the home. we do know there are dogs in the back of the home that officers have encountered. those have been kept in a secure place. live in oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco east ethic
