volunteers started to arrive. the symbol is the pink triangle. if we pan off to the left. you can see the outline of it here on twin peaks. this morning, dozens of volunteers, you can see them already here, they're unpacking a lot of their equipment, there is 175 pink tarps, that they're going to nail down to fill in this one acre triangle outline. you can see the volunteers out here, unloading and unpacking stuff. they do this every year. for the start of sf pride weekend. they have been doing this for 17 years. here is what it looks likes once the pink triangle is completely done. on a clear day like today, the symbol can be seen from as far as 20 miles away. and now, here to explain the significance of the pink triangle, and why this has become a tradition for pride weekend, carnie, you're the founder and organizer of the group, and what is it? >> it was used to label and shame the gay prisoners and a series of triangles for the undesirable, yellow for jews and brown for gypsies and pink

for the gays, and black for anti-socials and the pink triangle was worn on the jacket of the prisoners. >> why is it important to kind of remind people of that? you think it was used as a symbol of hate and discrimination, why is it important to remind people of it. >> there is still hate and discrimination. in san francisco, where of course we're a very tolerant city but in other parts of the world such as iran, iraq, afghanistan, malawi and uganda, they have a great deal of trouble. in fact they hang gays in public squares in iran and there was legislation to kill gays in uganda, which fortunately did not pass. so we're trying to remember the hatred of the past and trying to remind people what happens when one legislates hatred and one legislates an entire class of people away from society. >> thank, pat carnie, the founder and organizer of the 17- year tradition. the volunteers will be out here all morning putting this together. there are hundreds of people expected to turn out to start nailing down 175 different pink

tarps that will fill in the outline of this one acre pink triangle display atop of twin peaks. live in san francisco, alley rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> pride weekend kicked off last night and this year's theme, global equality. last night, the 9th am transgender march was held from delores park to civic center. and it was dedicated to 37-year- old brandy martell, a transgender woman, who police say was shot and killed in oakland two months ago. >> although we're very sad, we also want to come together and show the world that we mean business. we're united. and we love one another. and we're not going to stand for this anymore. >> the first march was held to honor a transgender teenager killed in newark, back in 2002. and organizers say it is upsetting that these types of hate crimes are happening 10 years later. many people at last night's march say they hope tolerance will spread outside of san francisco. to the rest of the bay area. bride events will continue tonight with the -- pride events will continue tonight with the 20th annual dike march

to celebrate the lesbian community. crowds gather in the mission district and the program starts at 5:00 and the actual march to the heart of the castro district, that starts at 6:00. the big event of the weekend is the pride parade. and that's tomorrow, at 10:30. and it is going to start at market and beel, and end at market and 8th streets. we have complete pride coverage on our web site. just look for the hot topic section at ktvu .com. overnight news, a man was shot and killed in the city of richmond. it happened around 12:30 this morning near 37th street and nevin avenue. these are exclusive pictures of the shooting scene. ktvu photographer was riding with police on a separate assignment, when the shooting call came in. and witnesses say they heard a series of gunshots. and then phoned 911. one neighbor rushed outside. tending to the victim. and checking his pulse. >> it is frustrating.

he was shot in the head. >> witnesses told police, two gunmen went into a nearby house, police surrounded that home, and eventually went in, but no one was found inside. and san francisco, a man was killed after a double shooting near candlestick park. police believe two men were shot at the intersection of selena avenue and bay shore boulevard 11:30 last night and one man died and one other in serious condition. no word what led up to the shooting. officers say no one is in custody. guilty. on 45 counts. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky was led away in handcuffs from a pennsylvania courthouse after a jury convicted him of sexual abuse last night. coming up at 7:15, why the legal battle in this high profile case is far from over. a woman in san francisco suffered a serious head injury mugged on a city street.

she fell struggling with two men trying to snatch her purse at boss worth and brompleton avenue. the 28-year-old fractured her skull on the pavement. doctors call it a life- threatening head injury. the men ran off. san francisco police are investigating two possible sexual assaults in the mission district that may be related. the most recent incident reportedly happened at 19th and cap street, early monday morning. it was detailed in a local news blog, but police say a report was never filed with the department. the other assault occurred on june 15. about five blocks away. and investigators say both incidents involved two men who approached the victim from behind. and police have increased patrols in the area. as a result of these assaults. a marine killed in afghanistan is going to be honored today with a permanent memorial in danville. the memorial is for a fallen lance corporal joshua toxycoral. more than 20 marines who served with him have come in from out of state for today's dedication. and his family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.

>> it means everything to us. these guys were with him and they're his brothers. >> the memorial will feature a ron statue of the classic battlefield cross. that dedication will begin at 10:00 a.m. outside danville's memorial building. it is expected to draw as many as 4,000 people. well, one of the latest service members to die in afghanistan was from the central vally. sergeant jose rodriguez was killed on tuesday, 22 years old from the town of racine in merced county. rodriguez died from enemy fire in the kandahar province and stationed at joint base lewis mcchord in washington state. and in just about an hour, the search will resume for the missing teenager sierra lamar. it is being organized by the class kids foundation. mike honda is scheduled to visit the search center. and volunteer, 18 and over, can check in at burnette elementary school in morgan hill between 8:00 this morning and 1:00 in the afternoon.

and today, protesting parents from lakeview elementary school are holding a march and rally in oakland. for nine days, the group has been camping out to protest the closure of lakeview and four other schools. today they will join community members from oakland in a march across the city. to raise support for their cause. and they are demanding a stop to all school closures or the resignation of superintendent tony smith. today's rally begins at noon at frank ogawa plaza. officially summer. certainly a noticeably cooler day outside. rose mary is watching the change in weather. will it warm back up? >> we will warm eventually. >> 5-10 degrees below average for today. a better day than yesterday. we're waking up with partly cloudy skies. and mostly clear. even along the coastline, we've got some sunshine out there. and giving you a live look there. at the bay bridge, you can see way off in the distance, and a few of those low clouds hanging near the coastline. but we are looking at blue skies over most of the area. and we will continue with partly cloudy to mostly sunny

good morning to you. a live look there at the oakland estuary. oakland, 53 degrees with a light breeze. unseasonably cool for the afternoon. rodney king's fiance will not be attending his funeral services next saturday. according to tmz, king's family has not contacted her since the day after rodney died and does not plan to. and the family says his fiance cynthia kelly has not made any arrangements for rodney and won't be invited to his funeral. they are also skeptical about her story surrounding king's death. and the family says king was a

great swimmer. and don't believe he could have drowned. a jury has found former football coach jerry sandusky guilty of sexual abuse. this morning, he is behind bars and it appears likely he will spend the rest of his life there. reporter marrian rafferty has more on what is next in his case. >> reporter: a late night verdict in the trial of jerry sandusky. the former assistant football coach, found guilty of molesting 10 boys over a 15- year period. the 68-year-old escorted from court in curves. all but certain to spend the rest of his life behind bars. >> guilty? >> yes. >> yes, guilty? [ cheering ] >> a sometimes rowdy press conference, following the conviction, the pennsylvania attorney general met with cheers as she praised police and prosecutors. >> a serial child predator who committed horrific acts upon his victims causing lifelong and life-changing consequences for all of them has been held accountable for his crimes.

child abuse. marian rafferty, fox news. >> in northern california, a boy scout leader is under investigation, for allegedly sexually assaulting two scouts. the county sheriff investigators have arrested dustin headrick on thursday and the 20-year-old forced himself on a 13 and 16-year-old boy, at wilderness camp in beaute meadows. and he is an eagle scout. and an assistant scout master for a boy scout troop in reading. he is being held on $465,000 bail. and efforts are continuing this morning to recover the body of a park ranger who fell to his life on washington state's mount ranier. 34-year-old nick hall died thursday while trying to rescue four injured climbers near the summit of the 14,000-foot mountain. and 40 mile-an-hour winds, hall was attaching a climber to a rescue helicopter. when he plummeted more than 3,000 feet. and his father says the family will dedicate themselves to mountain rescue in nick's

honor. >> a loved mean, and if there is any means possible, we will try to promote rescue. >> the national park service will investigate the death, meanwhile the four stranded climbers have been removed safely from the mountain. new this morning, president obama renews his call for congress to pass bills for more jobs. better roads. and lower college loans. >> we're eight days away from nearly 7 1/2 million students seeing their loan rates double because congress has not acted to stop it. >> in the weekly address, president obama says washington is bogged down by inaction. lawmakers have until july 1 before the interest rates of many college loans double. the president also wants congress to approve a transportation bill he says would create jobs and repair the nation's crumbling roads and bridges. >> congress may actually be listening. sources in washington say democrats and republicans are close to deals on both

transportation and college loans. both are expected next week, on a major transportation bill, or an extension of current programs, and congress also hopes to keep the current 3.4 interest rate, on subsidized stafford loans for another year. however, the main sticking point remains how to pay for the measure's $6 billion price tag. from silicon valley to wall street, there is concern over the health of google co-founder larry page. the mountain view company says page lost his voice and was forced to skip the company's annual meeting thursday and will miss two other important events in the next few weeks. but in an e-mail to employees, the 39-year-old page wrote quote there is nothing seriously wrong with me. page said he would continue to run google as chief executive. "the wall street journal" reports analysts worry google could receive as much criticism as apple did for failing to disclose the extent of steve jobs' poor health. redwood city wants to be

reimbursed for helping the city of san carlos start up its fire department. redwood city loaned some of its firefighters to san carlos which has had trouble with staffing. now, the palo alto daily news reports redwood city wants san car lose to pay it back. san carlos city council could approve a $400,000 payment on monday. san jose is changing its strategy following three fires at homens and canvas this month. an estimated two acres were burned by center and tully road yesterday morning. there are 60 homeless encampments with up to 900 people. there is a lot of material in the encampments that can catch fire. >> they have floors and walls built up and shelves and mattresses and beds. pretty much whatever you can put in your house, they can do it. very creative. >> and the city regularly clears out those items to try to prevent the homeless from returning. and the city officials are also working with the nonprofit ehc life builders to reach out to

the homeless and to try to discourage them from setting up campsites. a disappointing response to a fire in san francisco. it has firefighters and pg&e looking to improve communications. earlier this month, a private contractor punctured a gas line. and pg&e was criticized for taking two hours to shut off that gas. and fire officials say pg&e has since laid out several improvements to dispatch response and mapping. fairfield police are warning people about some fake flyers being left on car windshields. and the flyers claim that the car's owner owes a $287 fine for violating a certain city code. and they claim to be from officer eddie fellson. but police say there is no such person within the department. and the flyers are printed on yellow paper. and they can be deceiving because they have the city's logo in the upper left corner. and anyone with any information on the flyers is asked to contact police. well, general motors is recalling almost half a million of its chevy cruise vehicles. the company says some of the models run the risk of fire in

ripped off their hit gold on the ceiling and they have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against home depot for lonely boys. san francisco's longest running free outdoor music festival kicks off tomorrow. this is the 75th year of the festival. and thousands are expected at tomorrow's free concert. which begins at 2:00 at 19th avenue and slow boulevard. performing are the glide ensemble. the family stone. and grammy winner anita baker. tomorrow marks the start of free sunday concerts through august 26. a parade is being held today to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the almeda county fair. the fair started on wednesday. and it is open tuesday through sunday. and until july 8. and today's centennial parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the high school in pleasanton. more than 10,000 people are expected to line the streets. some areas will be closed to traffic. organizers say along with the parade, the 100th anniversary celebration will include fireworks and a collection of

here are 175 pink tarps. and a little later on this monk, monk -- morning, all of the volunteers here, they will go out and nail down all of the pink tarps to fill in the outline of this one acre display. the pink triangle is an acre wide. and this is what it looks like from a distance. this is the view from our camera on highway 101. on a lear day. the triangle can -- clear day, the triangle can be seen from as far away as 20 miles. the organizer of the foundation and this event explains the significance behind it. >> the pink triangle was used by the nazis in concentration camps. a lot of people forgot about that. they think that the pink triangle is an abstract symbol. we're trying to remind people of the origins of the pink triangle and now used as a symbol of pride. >> and more than 100 volunteers have signed up to install the pink triangle this morning. and it usually takes them about an hour to an hour and a half to complete the work. once they're done, a little later this morning, at 10:30, they will hold a ceremony to remember the tragic history of

gay marriage and emphasize the good it can do. blangenhorn says people must learn to accept people and their choices even if involves compromise. the u.s. supreme court is still deciding whether it will argue california's same-sex marriage ban. supporters of proposition 29, the proposed state tax on tobacco, has conceded defeat. although there are still about 100,000 uncounted ballots across the state, the associated press declared the race over. calling the 30,000 vote margin too great to overcome. and the measure would have added a dollar tax to every pack of cigarettes. and prop 29 supporters partially blame their loss on aggressive ad campaigns by tobacco companies. >> big tobacco spent over $50 million, telling lies, that the money was going to go out of state. and the money was going to stay here for state of the art cancer research. in california. >> that is already my taxes used for this. so i am glad it goes down this way.

>> low voter turnout might have also contributed to the defeat. and anti-smoking groups are already considering another initiative. a high number of injuries is hurting oakland's police patrols. the oakland tribune reports 90 officers are on medical leave, and that's one out of every seven officers in the department that is already under staffed. and opd doesn't know why so many are hurt. a new plan for monitoring and reducing injuries is expected to be released on tuesday. and oakland police are investigating two deaths. they say one is a homicide and the other is being called a suspicious death. and a man's body was found in a drainage ditch around 10:30 yesterday morning just north of the coliseum. 1:30 yesterday morning a woman's body was found in the oakland hills on an on-ramp to highway 13. police describe that victim as a young african-american woman, we are told she suffered a gunshot wound. so far, she has not been identified. then, later in the morning, an amtrak conductor on a train that runs near the coliseum spotted a man's body in a canal. the detectives say the body was partially in the water and

police are still waiting for a cause of death. authorities in sunnyvale plan to press charges against the man who was shot and wounded by a highway patrol officer. the incident started with a chase on highway 101 thursday morning. and a 34-year-old suspect finally came to a stop on alters a avenue in sunnyvale. and the suspect got out of his car and that's when an officer opened fire. the man is now facing charges of violently resisting an officer. evasion. and violation of probation. >> and a los angeles based police watchdog group is now investigating the fatal police shooting of a fellow officer. in january, santa maria police went to arrest 29-year-old officer alberto rube yas jr. he was wanted for sexual assault against a 17-year-old girl. police say when they arrived, he gan to fight them and drew his weapon and fired. another officer shot him twice and he died at the scene. the two men charged with

beating brian stow are set to go back to court. dressed in blue jail uniforms, marvin norwood and louie sanchez pleaded not guilty. a trial could begin as soon as august. and there is already a shakeup on the defense team. a private attorney representing sanchez is leaving. he only agreed to handle the case through the pretrial phase. a critical ruling is expected on monday in the trial of a south bay man charged with beating up a priest who allegedly molested him years ago. a judge will consider a defense motion for a mistrial. the attorneys for the defendant say the prosecutors subpoenaed the jury when she allowed the priest father gerald lidner to allegedly lie on the witness stand. lidner testified he did not sexual assault lynch during a 1975 camping trip. >> then she questioned him. and sure enough, he lied about a very material fact. and in this specific instance whether or not he had molested will lynch. >> the district attorney's office calls the motion

frivolous says the prosecution had announced in opening statements the witness may not tell the truth. some mountain view residents are concerned that a man convicted of an infamous crime is now living in their community. and 57-year-old richard allen showenfeld spent more than three decades in prison for his role in the 1976 chin chilla school bus kidnapping. the mayor's office, says he had moved in wis mother mary. a ktvu reporter knocked on her door last night and says showenfeld was not. there i and his brother james and fred woods kidnapped 26 students and a buses driver and demanded a a million dollars ransom and eventually caught after their victims escaped from a livermore quarry. >> definitely very scary. and unnerving. it makes me very nervous. >> showenfeld must wear a gps ankle mob tore at all times. james showenfeld and woods are still in prison. they have parole hearings later this year.

the hyde park fire jumped a river and burned more homes. the wildfire has burned more than 69,000 acres and fire containment dropped from 60% to 45%. lois livinggood got the call to leave yesterday. >> we saw fire burning right up to the houses below us. >> many of the evacuees have had their cars packed with belongings for days just in case they have to leave. the fire west of fort collins has now destroyed at least 191 homes. and it is also blamed for one woman's death. a fire at an airport tech center in atlantic city, new jersey, caused flight delays across the country. the federal aviation administration says yesterday's fire took out the traffic flow system. that meant airlines cannot track their flights as quickly as usual. the faa had to use a backup system. and hundreds of flights were canceled. and expect more weather delays at sfo today. the airport expects an average delay of 50 minutes for incoming flights. because of low clouds. look out for intense thunderstorms on the east

morning in san francisco with more on the work being done and why this triangle is such an important symbol. allie? >> reporter: volunteers started this work about an hour ago and they have already completed a lot of the work here. this is the pink triangle that is in the process of being installed on the side of twin peaks in san francisco. this installation happens every year the saturday morning of sf pride weekend. dozens of volunteers this morning already unpacked 175 pink tarps, and they are folding them together, overlaying them, then nailing them down to complete this disprai. the pink triangle is an acre-wide display and one volunteer has even come from new zealand to be a part of this morning's event. >> did you come from new zealand just for pride weekend? >> basically. with the amount of lesbians, we don't have this many back home. >> so a sense of camaraderie?

>> definitely, yes. >> reporter: now, on a clear day, the triangle can be seen from as far as 20 miles away. this is a 17-year tradition. the offeringer and found of the tradition explained the significance behind the pink triangle. >> the pink triangle was used by the nazis in concentration camps and a lot of people forgot about that. they think the pink triangle is an ab tract symbol. we're trying to remind people of the tragic origins of the pink triangle and that it's now used as a symbol of pride. >> reporter: this is what it will look like completely done. this is video from last year's display. more than a hundred volunteers are out here. as we showed you, they did this work very quickly, usually takes them about an hour, hour and a half to finish the work. once done, at 10:30 this morning, they will have a ceremony to remember the tragic history of the pink triangle and they will have san francisco leaders, mayor ed lee and house minority leader nancy pelosi. volunteers are out, some even brought their dogs to keep them

wound and his girlfriend was just basically crying, he was shot in the head. >> witnesses told police two gunmen went into a nearby house. police surrounded that house, eventually went in, but no one was found inside. one man is dead after a double shooting near candlestick park. police believe two men were shot at salinas avenue and bayshore boulevard around 11:30 last night. the two men somehow got to san francisco general hospital. police say one man died, the other is in serious condition. there is no word on what led up to that shooting and no one is in custody. guilty on 45 counts. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky was led away in handcuffs from a pennsylvania courthouse, after a jury convicted him of sexual abuse last night. coming up at 8:15, why the legal battle in this high profile case is still far from over. a san francisco woman suffered a serious head injury during a robbery. she fell while struggling with two men trying to steal her

purse thursday night. this all happened near the glenn park bart station at bosworth street. the 28-year-old fractured her skull on the pavement and doctors are calling it a life-threatening head injury. the men ran off. san francisco police are investigating two possible sexual assaults in the mission district that may be related. the most resident reportedly happened at 19th and cap streets early monday morning. it was detailed in a local news blog, but police say a report was never filed with the department. another assault occurred at june 15th, about five blocks away. investigators say both of those incidents involved two men who approached the victims from behind. police have increased patrols in that area as a result of those assaults. a marine killed in afghanistan will be honored today, with a permanent memorial in danville. the memorial is for fallen lance corporal joshua corral. more than 20 marines who served with him have come in from out of state for today's dedication ceremony. his family is overwhelmed by the

in this commercial. the group says the pizza chain ripped off their hit, "gold on the ceiling." the band also filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against home depot, who they say copied their hit "lonely boy." fairfield police are warning people about fake flyers being left on car wind shields. the flyers claim that the car's owner owes a $287 fine for violating a certain city code. they claim to be from officer eddie fellson, but police say there is no such officer at the department. the flyers are printed on yellow paper and they can be deceiving because they have the city's logo on the upper left corner. well, general motors is recalling almost a half million chevy cruz cars. some of the models run the risk of fires in the engine compartment, according to the company. the fires can start when oil leaks or is spilled onto a hot plastic shield right below the engine. the recall involves 475,000 cars made between september 2010 and may of this year.

it's the fifth recall for the cruz since it was introduced two years ago. san jose is changing its strategy following three fires at homeless encampments this month. the latest fire burned around 2 acres by coyote creek near actually and center roads yesterday morning. city officials say there are 60 homeless encampments with up to 900 people and many use fire to cook or stay warm. they also say there is plenty material in those encampments to catch fire. >> they have floors and walls bullet up, shelves, mattresses, beds. pretty much whatever you put in your house, they are very creative. >> city officials are performing creek cleanups and trying to prevent the homeless from setting up those camps, but many come back anyway. they are also working with the nonprofit ehc life builders to reach out to the homeless and to try to discourage encampments. a disappointing response to a fire in san francisco has firefighters and pg&e looking to improve communication. earlier this month, a private

it is a symbol that can be seen miles away. allie rasmus is here with more. >> reporter: well, you couldn't ask for better weather to do this. volunteers installing the pink triangle are just about done with their work. i'll step out of the way so we can show you. they finished nailing the last of the stakes into the tarps, to put these tarps down and fill out this one-acre display. now there's people enjoying their work, assessing it, sitting down, taking a break, looking at what they have accomplished this morning. now, we were here when volunteers started at 7:00 a.m. they began with an assembly line of sorts, unpacking, unloading, hauling out box of tarps all the way downhill. this is a 17-year tradition here in san francisco. the pink triangle installation always happens the saturday of sf pride weekend. the organizer and founder of this event explains the significance of the pink triangle. he says it was used bit nazis to identify gays in concentration camps and he said it's important to remember the history of the

involves compromise. the u.s. supreme court is still deciding whether it will hear arguments on california's same-sex marriage ban. oakland police are investigating two deaths. they say one is a homicide and the other is being called a suspicious death. a man's body was found in a drainage ditch around 10:30 yesterday morning, just north of the coliseum. then at 1:30 yesterday morning, a woman's body was found in the oakland hills at an onramp to highway 13. police describe that victim as a young african american woman. we're told she suffered a gunshot wound. so far, she hasn't been identified. later that morning, an amtrak conductor on a train that runs near the coliseum spotted that man's body in a canal. detectives say the body was partially in the water and police are still waiting for the coroner to give them a cause of death. a high number of injuries is hurting oakland's police patrols. the oakland tribune reports 90 officers are on medical leave. that's one out of every seven officers in a department that's

already understaffed. opd does not know why so many are hurt. a new plan for monitoring and reducing injuries is expected to be released on tuesday. authorities in sunnyvale plan to press charges against a man who was shot and wounded by a highway patrol officer. the incident started with a chase on highway 101 thursday morning. the 34-year-old suspect finally came to a stop in sunnyvale. investigators say the suspect got out of his car and that's when the officer opened fire. the man is now facing charges of violently resisting an officer, evasion, and violation of probation. next month, the two men accused of attacking bryan stow are scheduled to return to a los angeles courtroom for a pretrial hearing. dressed in blue jail uniforms yesterday, suspects marvin norwood and louis sanchez pleaded not guilty to assault and battery charges. a trial could begin as soon as august. there is already a shakeup on the defense team. a private attorney representing sanchez is leaving. he only agreed to handle the case through the pretrial phase.

a critical ruling is expected on monday in a trial of a south bay man charged with beating up a priest who allegedly molested him years ago. a judge is going to consider a defense motion for a mistrial. attorneys for the defendant will lynch say prosecutors shouldn't have allowed the priest to testify because they say he knew he would lie. he testified he did not sexually assault lynch during a 1975 camping trip. >> then she questioned him and sure enough, he lied about a very material fact, in this specific instance whether or not he had molested will lynch. >> the district attorney's office calls the motion frivolous, saying the prosecution had announced in opening statements that the witness may not tell the truth. authorities have filed their own motion to the mistrial request, saying it's a novel theory, unsupported by case law, statutes, or common sense. mountain view police say they are committed to the safety of residents, after a famous parolee has moved into the city.

57-year-old richard allen schoenfeld spent more than three decades in prison for his role in the 1976 schoolbus kidnapping. the mayor's office says he has moved in with his mother, mary. ktvu reporter knocked on her door last night and she said that schoenfeld was not there. he, his brother james, and fred woods kidnapped 26 students and a bus driver, demanding a $5 million ransom. they were eventually caught after their victims escaped from a livermore quarry. >> definitely very scary and unnerving. makes me very nervous. >> schoenfeld must wear a gps ankle monitor at all times. james schoenfeld and woods are still in prison. they have parole hearings later this year. supporters of proposition 29, the proposed state tax on tobacco, have conceded defeat. although there are still about 100,000 uncounted ballots across the state, the associated press declared the race over, calling

off of a trail off northgate road near mount diablo state park. firefighters say he fell off his bike and into a ravine 20 feet below. he was wearing a helmet, but he was injured so badly in the fall that he is now in critical condition at a hospital in walnut creek. morgan hill police have arrested a woman for a hit and run that left a 22-year-old man critically injured. 28-year-old sandra arisa of morgan hill has been arrested and charged with felony hit and run. police say her volkswagon beetle has damage consistent with hitting a pedestrian. friends of the victim, joshua valdez, have been staging events to raise money for his medical care. so far, they have a total of close to $2000. a san francisco couple is due back in court monday, after pleading not guilty to charges

in overnight news, a search is under way for the gunman who shot and killed a man in front of his family in richmond. it happened around 12:30 this morning, near 37th street and nevin avenue. these are exclusive pictures of the crime scene, taken just minutes after the first emergency call came in. witnesses say they heard a series of gunshots and then called 911. one neighbor rushed outside to try to help the victim and check his pulse. >> just applied pressure to the wound and then his girlfriend was just basically crying that he was shot in the head. >> witnesses told police a couple of gunmen went into a nearby house and police surrounded that home and then stormed in, but found nothing. in san francisco, a man was killed after a double shooting near candlestick park. police believe two men were shot at the intersection of salinas avenue and bayshore boulevard around 11:30 last night. police say one man died and the other is in serious condition. there is no word yet on what led

up to the shooting. officers say at this time, no one is in custody. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky has been found guilty on 45 counts of sexually assaulting children. reporter david lee miller is live in bellefonte, pennsylvania, where jurors deliberated for more than 20 hours before reaching their verdict. >> reporter: that's right, claudine. this morning in bellefonte, which is the county seat, there is a feeling of relief that at last this part of the ordeal is now over. when the verdict was announced there, were actually cheers here at the courthouse. they have already released the booking photo of jerry sandusky. when he left the courthouse yesterday, he was in handcuffs, did not say anything to reporters as he was led away by sheriffs deputies. for the most part, he was unemotional. his family, though, were visibly shaken by the verdict.

the prosecutors shared a sigh of relief. and also a sense of accomplishment after the verdict was rendered. the attorney general for the state of pennsylvania spoke here on the steps of the courthouse. she was flanked by the lead prosecutor on one side, the head of the state police on the other. and she asked the question, who was going to believe just a bunch of kids? well, she answered her own question, saying here in centre county, we believe what the kids had to say. alternatively, the defense here had maintained that the accusers were essentially fabricating stories in order to file profitable civil lawsuits. that was the core of the defense case. at the end of the day, it did not work. the defense saying they are now going to appeal. the main reason for appeal, as best we can tell at this point, they did not have adequate time to prepare defense. they had repeatedly asked for continuance in the trial and it was rejected. so the trial itself is over.

during a robbery. she fell while struggling with two men trying to steal her purse thursday night. this was near the glenn park bart station at bosworth street. the 28-year-old fractured her skull on the pavement. doctors call it a life-threatening head injury. the man ran off and has not been caught. san francisco police are investigating two possible sexual assaults in the mission district that may be related. the most resident reportedly happened at 19th and cap streets early monday morning. it was detailed in a local news blog, but police say a report was never filed with the department. the other assault apparently occurred on june 15th, about five blocks away. investigators say both incidents involve two men who approached the victims from behind. police have increased patrols in the area as a result of these assaults. well, right now, san jose congressman mike honda is visiting the sierra lamar search center. about an hour ago, volunteers set out to continue the search for the missing teenager. this morning's search is being

they say the 20-year-old forced himself on a 13-year-old and a 16-year-old boy at a wilderness camp in meadows. headrick is an assistant scout master for the boy scout troop in redding, now being held on $465,000 bail. a mother from texas has been arrested for allegedly trying to sell her baby through a classified ad. the ad priced the 4-month-old at $4000. police say a woman from florida wanted to buy the baby. she was supposed to fly to dallas today, meet the mother, and then take the baby back to florida, but she backed out and called police. the fbi is now investigating. efforts are continuing this morning to recover the body of a park ranger who fell to his death on washington state's mount rainier. 34-year-old nick hall died thursday while trying to rescue four injured climbers near the summitt of the 14,000-foot mountain. in 40 mile-an-hour winds, hall was attached to a rescue

allie rasmus is live in san francisco with the meaning of the symbol and the volunteer effort it took to put it all together. allie? >> reporter: it can be seen from as far away as 20 miles away on a clear day. and this is definitely one of those clear days. volunteers couldn't ask for better weather to put this all together. you can see the pink triangle is in place, a fairly large display, about an acre wide. i'm standing halfway down the hill and you can see the tarps extend all the way down this slope on twin peaks. volunteers, there are about a hundred of them, spent the morning, took about an hour and a half to piece together a patch work of pink tarps, kind of nailed them all in place. they started their work at 7:30 -- excuse me, 7:00 with an assembly line, working together to haul boxes up and down the hill. the pink triangle is installed the saturday morning of sf pride weekend and atracks people from around the world and the bay area. one volunteer brought her

10:30 yesterday morning near the coliseum. at 11:30 yesterday morning, a woman's body was found in the oakland hills on an onramp to highway 13. police describe that victim as a young african american woman. we're told she did suffer a gunshot wound, but so far, we don't have any identification. later that morning, an amtrak conductor on a train that runs near the coliseum spotted the man's body in a canal. detectives said the body was partially in the water and police are still waiting to hear from the coroner about the cause of death. they are, however, already investigating this as suspicious. a high number of injuries is hurting oakland's police patrols. the oakland tribune reports 90 officers are on medical leave. that's one out of every seven officers in a department that's understaffed to begin with. opd does not know why so many are hurt. a new plan for monitoring and reducing injuries is expected to be released on tuesday. authorities in sunnyvale plan to press charges against the man who was shot and wounded by a highway patrol officer.

that incident started with a chase on highway 101 thursday morning. the 34-year-old suspect finally came to a stop in sunnyvale. investigators say the suspect then got out of his car and that is when an officer opened fire. the man is facing charges now for violently resisting an officer, evasion, and violation of probation. the two men charged with beating bryan stow are scheduled to return to court next month for a pretrial hearing. dressed in blue jail uniforms yesterday, suspects marvin norwood and louis sanchez pleaded not guilty to assault and battery charges. a trial could begin as soon as august. there's already a shakeup on the defense team. a private attorney representing sanchez is leaving. he only agreed to handle the case through the pretrial phase. a critical ruling is expected monday in the trial of a south bay man charged with beating up a priest who allegedly molested him years ago. a judge is going to consider a defense motion for a mistrial. attorneys for the defendant will lynch say prosecutors should not have allowed the priest, father

9:45. we have exclusive pictures of a shooting scene in richmond where a man was killed in front of his family. it happened near 37th street and nevin avenue around 12:30 a.m. richmond police are searching for the gunman. a memorial will be dedicated to a fallen marine from danville this morning. lance corporal joshua corral was killed in afghanistan last november. he'll be memorialized with a bronze statue outside danville's memorial building. dedication begins in just about 15 minutes. and one of the most important symbols of pride weekend is now in place. work on the pink triangle began at san francisco's twin peaks this morning. a large volunteer effort worked to place the symbol of pride for the gay and lesbian community on that hill. and we are learning new details this morning about that apparent murder-suicide at a luxury hotel in beverly hills. police are now calling the two victims elderly, but they are not releasing any other details. investigators found the man and the woman dead of gunshot wounds

inside a room at the beverly hilton last night. the daytime emmy awards are being held at that hotel later today. this is also the same hotel where whitney houston died back in february. a san francisco couple is due back in court monday, after pleading not guilty to charges that they killed a man who was allegedly their daughter's pimp. barry gillton and his girlfriend are accused of fatally shooting calvin sneed on june 4th in the bayview district. sneed was an alleged los angeles gang member who the couple believed had turned their 17-year-old daughter into a prostitute. but their attorneys say evidence shows plenty of other people apparently wanted sneed dead. the couple remains in jail in lieu of $2 million bail. the u.s. is urging americans to consider leaving parts of kenya. the u.s. embassy in nairobi warns of an 'emment terrorist attack in a coastal city. the obama administration has pulled out all government personnel from the area. the warning does not specify the

on thursday. investigators say a bullet from a target shooter's gun hit a rock and sparked the flames. this is the 20th target shooting-related fire in utah just this year. and a new round of evacuations was ordered in larimer county, colorado. the high park fire jumped a river and burned more homes. the wildfire has burned more than 69,000 acres. fire containment dropped from 60% to 45%. lois livinggood got the call to evacuate yesterday. >> we saw fire burning right up to the houses below us. >> many of these evacuees have had their cars packed with belongings for days, just in case they had to leave. the fire west of fort collins has now destroyed at least 191 homes. it's also blamed for one woman's death. a fire at an airport tech center in atlantic city, new jersey caused flight delays across the country. the federal aviation administration say yesterday's fire took out its traffic flow systems and that meant airlines

could not track their flights as quickly as usual. the faa had to use a backup system and hundreds of flights had to be canceled. the father of one of the students who bullied a bus monitor to tears is apologizing for his son's behavior. since this video of the students taunting karen klein went viral, outrage towards those involved is growing. two of the students have since written apology letters. the father of one of the bullies says they are still deciding on an appropriate punishment. >> he's in the house. he can't go anywhere anyway, due to the death threats and the harassment. i mean, we're waiting for this whole thing to cool down before we can proceed on, you know, those types of things. >> and since the video was posted, an online fund has been set up to send klein on vacation. and more than $600,000 has been raised. klein says she is not pressing charges, but will let the school district decide on a punishment. an arrest warrant has been issued for a man charged with vandalizing a picasso painting

. a human tower has climbed right into the new york skyline. >> the group built a tower that stood eight levels tall, breaking the world record as the first eight-level tower, which takes roughly 5 to 7 minutes to build and collapse and requires a lot of concentration, strength, and balance. well, today marks the 40th anniversary of title ix. president richard nixon signed the equal protection act into law on this day back in 1972. although title ix is best known for providing female opportunities in sports, it also bans sex discrimination in all programs in schools.
