the scene of a deadly police shooting in antioch. witnesses report hearing a hail of bullets. claudine wong is in antioch where police are trying to piece together what happened. >> reporter: let me show you the scene here just between country hill drive and vinewood. you can see police still out here. they have it will up this area as they continue to gather evidence in what happened in this deadly officer involved shooting yesterday. this all happened around 4:00 yesterday night here in antioch. a witness told ktvu a man shot at police after officers approached a home and officers returned fire. police really aren't releasing very much information at this point. we are told we'll get more information in the next few hours. police also tell us they will be on the scene for another couple hours. here's what a neighbor told us she heard. >> i just heard two shots and

then i heard a shell of shots. probably about i don't know probably about 15-20 shots. >> reporter: now family members were on scene after this shooting and identified the man killed as denny gomez a popular barber in the area. neighbors also said they never saw any problems with him. he was a good guy. a family member told us anything that would have happened would have been very much out of character. we are still trying to figure out what led up to this officer involved shooting. what led up to the hail of gunfire that neighbors have describe for us. again this is a live look at the scene this morning as they continue to gather evidence. we have seen them focused on the house and directly across the street we pan over to this tree area where they seem to be gathering information over there. we will try to talk to police officers out here. see if they have any information they can release to

us. of course we will keep you updated. live in antioch claudine wong. later this morning suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi fights for his life to save his job. san francisco's deputy city attorney peter keith wasted no time in grilling mirkarimi last night. he admitted he bruised his wife's arm during a quarrel last new years eve. >> you were arrested and in fact committed a criminal offense. >> i pled to an offense. that is correct. >> are you disputing you committed a criminal act. >> he defended himself. he returns to the witness stand at 9:00 a.m.. mayor lee is also expected to

testify. 45 second video of elle yen la lopez will bed a missable -- admissible. defendant will lynch is scheduled to take the stand. he will accuse jerald of raping him and his brother. lynch will have the opportunity to talk about the alleged abuse in open court. investigation is urn way into the cause of a house fire in san jose. the fire was reported just before 8:30 in an empty victorian home. the first fire crews on the scene reported smoke coming out of every single window. nearby homes were evacuated. is is >> we were wondering if someone was in the house. because you feel for people. the house. you don't want it to be your

house. especially my friends that are two houses away from you. it was scary. >> no one was inside the house. the cause is still under investigation. fire officials say they do not believe it was suspicious. time now 4:33. san jose firefighters will be going door to door to get information about two fire there is. tuesday afternoon the fire damaged two buildings. both fires were set in recycling bins. the first one near oak grove high school. a $500 reward is being offered in the case. the wild fire in colorado springs is one of the most destructive fires in colorado history. the fire itself is no longer the only problem. what has become a huge concern for people that are evacuated from their homes. ten-year-old richmond boy is expected to survive after being shot. the gunman is still on the loose. that shooting happened near the

corner of 15th and maine yesterday afternoon. the boy was walking with his mother and friends. the shooter that was riding a bicycle opened fire at a car but missed and the stray bullet hit the bullet. >> they threw himselfs to the floor. when the boy got up he noticed on the right side of his back was burning. >> investigators found the suspects bicycle but has not made an arrest. they are also looking for the intended target that was driving a black ford fusion. the cars rear window was shot out and investigators hope the driver can help them identify the shooter. four people are injured. one of them critically following a shooting. that happened just after 2:00 yesterday afternoon outside the mountain valley shopping center. police say a 19-year-old man and 20-year-old man were the

intended target. but 39-year-old woman was caught in the gunfire. today federal lawmakers are expected to vote to keep interest rates on college student loans from doubling. house and senate leaders have tentatively agree on a one-year expense of the 3.4% interest rate. if approved it will effect nearly 7.5 million students that are likely to get new loans. rolled into that bill is an extension of gas diesel taxes as well. almost all the california state parks will remain open. at least for now. governor brown planned to shut down 70 state parks because of budget shortage. the state has made deals or close to finalizing some deals to keep most of the parks open. here in the bay area the benicia state recreational area -- recreational area is the

good morning. low clouds increasing as that weak front to the north begins to move in. temperatures coming down. 50s and 70s and isolated 80s. a soldier in fort bragg is accused of shooting and killing an officer. the suspected gunman killed the gun on himself but survived and was arrested. a third soldier in the area was slightly injured in the incident. a army officials are trying to figure out a motive for that shooting. republicans saute are not giving up their fight against president obama's health care reform law. house speaker john boehner has scheduled a vote next week to repeal the law.

mitt romney says the only sure way to -- the latest poll shows a majority of americans don't support the health care law as a whole although they do like many of the individual provisions. such as no more denials for preexisting conditions or dropping coverage when people get sick. we asked people in the bay area about their reaction. >> the prices keep going up. there is something that has to be done. >> i think i probably have a lot of people that don't have insurance. it might open up new exchange. i don't know how the coast will go in terms of people that already have insurance. >> hospital administrators say health care reform should take pressure off emergency rooms. and they say as more people get health insurance, medical groups will need to hire more doctors. under the new health care law employers with two t- with 2-49

will be in colorado to look at the damage coated by those devastating wild fires. president obama declared a disaster in the state. at least one death is being blamed on the fire burning near colorado springs that has destroyed 346 homes and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate. the arrest of two people has many of the evacuees concerned about luting. a couple quasarsed for suspicion of break into a house that was in an evacuation zone. the couple also had meth on them when they were arrested. investigators are trying to figure out if any other homes were targeted. in vallejo at least ten people are living in temporary housing after a fire destroyed two homes. it started yesterday afternoon in the area not far from the six flag amusement park. take a look at the pictures. this was taken on a cell phone. it may have started in or near a van that was parked between

the two homes. everyone was able to make it out okay but the family say they lost everything. >> breaks my heart. because like i said my parents my dad is bedridden. he's over 85 and my mom is 80 plus years old. when my mom screamed for help, my heart dropped. >> one firefighter suffered heat exhaustion but no one else was hurt. 4:49. investigators confirm a huge fire near an oakland bart station was deliberately set. that fire on june 14th burned down a housing complex that was on construction. they now know where and how it started. the fire caused $25 million in damage and led to a 12 hour part shut down. at & t is promising to have phone and internet back up and

running. 40,000 people lost service yesterday. at & t says a car crashed into a pole and utility crews cut the fiberoptic line. the outage means people can't call 9 1ez. it's also effecting cell phones, internet and land lines. the company that makes blackberry is cutting 5,000 jobs. research in motion says it will delay rolling out the blackberry 10 operating system. it will release the new system after the holiday shopping season wraps up. they also posted weaker than usual tablet and phone sales. the reason san francisco is being called the deadliest place in california when it comes to traffic safety. >> and the extortion plot revealed against the head coach of the goalen state warriors.

san francisco is leading california in several deadly statistics. according to state office of traffic safety san francisco county ranks number one among california's 58 counties for pedestrians killed or injure the by cars. the city is also topped for bicyclist deaths and injuries. speed related deaths and injuries, nighttime deaths and

jackson said he was a victim. adams had explicit photos of jackson and wanted $100,000 of photos to keep it quiet. the san francisco 49ers in santa clara county will go to court tuesday in the battle of $40 million. last week the county decided to take that money and use it instead to improve the schools. 49ers want a judge to order that money be frozen until it's decided who gets the funding. the competition is tight at the gymnastics olympic trials in san jose. the top three men have less than two points separating them after the first day of competition in the all around. the women start their events this afternoon. usa gymnastics is using this event to choose the five men and women that will represent the united states at the 2012
