bay area cities provide and it's all illegal. >> each year our dispatch centers and call lines become flooded with reports of fireworks and explosions. >> reporter: in 2010 alone, there was an estimate of 15,000 reported fires that were started by illegal fireworks. >> reporter: emergency respond e rs are trying to prevent fires and injuries from illegal fireworks. officers were able to buy illegal fireworks then confiscated more from the cars of two suspects. >> some of the stuff we're seeing is commercial grade type fireworks, mortars, launchers with the dry season we've had you can imagine a rocket goes flying into an older structure, a dry brush area and it has the potential to be catastrophic. >> this will also be the first 4th of july holiday that police use shot spotter technology that's mobile in police vehicles. >> the shots fired technology

monitors gunfire in realtime and immediately within seconds provide that information to officers in the field for enforcement. >> reporter: police tell us that translates to a faster response. >> opd is planning on at least four extra squads out on july 4th to respond to illegal fireworks and celebratory gunfire. six fire stations in fire stations are accepting illegal fireworks no questions asked. cara liu. fire crews in san francisco rushed to a small grass fire in the city's bay view neighborhood. we told first told you about the fire during breaking news this afternoon. the fire broke out at charter oak avenue and silver avenue. the fire threatened several near by homes but in the end the only damage reported was a burned fence. a person is recovering after injuries they suffered at a three alarm fire at an apartment in san francisco.

we received this video of the fire from the roof of the apartment building. firefighters say one person was hospitalized but is expected to survive. the fire is believed to have started by an electrical problem on of that building. fire investigators today canvassed a san jose neighborhood. officials say those fires were intentionally set. residents told us this week someone took one of their recycling bins and set it on fire right outside of one of her children's windows. >> i'm scared, who doesn't to be scared of your own safety and your children? >> reporter: authorities are offering a $1,000 reward for information on the arsons. three people were killed in a collision in davis. about 10:30 this morning a rental truck was traveling eastbound on 80 near the richard boulevard onramp. investigators say the truck collided with an suv before

leaving the freeway and hitting a tree. the accident caused a major traffic back up tieing up eastbound traffic for 7 miles all the way into dixon. in just the last hour here, testimony concluded in the ethics hearing for suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. david stevenson joins us with the final arguments we've just heard. >> reporter: the hearing wrapped up on the fourth floor here at city hall about 50 minutes ago. it brought the suspended sheriff face to face with the mayor who wants him gone for good. major ed lee was sworn this afternoon before the ethics commission. he testified why he believes mirkarimi should permanently lose his job after pleading guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment of his wife. >> i gave him an opportunity to come meet with me and talk to me, we did. had an opportunity to tell him what we're going to do and also give him some time to think about it. >> one day, right? >> yes. >> earlier in the afternoon,

mirkarimi wrapped up his second day of testimony on the stand he told commissioners he believes he can be an effective sheriff because he's now seen both sides of the justice system. >> in hindsight i absolutely wish that we were more on top of it in demonstrating the where with all to say when mayor newsom did when his scandal erupted. the commissioners are looking to have lopez, ross mirkarimi's wife appear before them on the 18th or 19th, left undecided whether the city will fly in lopez from venezuela. the alternative to have her testify via skype. she has already heard it -- already made it clear that she supports her husband and she wants him to keep his job.

place additional charges. 27-year-old victor murillo was last seen on piers 30-32 after the giant's-dodger game. a friend says he turned away for just a moment and when he looked back, murillo was gone. the coast guard searched for murillo but it was suspended this afternoon. apple's planned new headquarters in cuper to the t -- cupertino has been approved as a leadership project because it fit it is state's financial and environmental requirements. the project is scheduled to break ground sometime next year and be completed by the year 2015. a major wine comglomurate says it has acquired the pinot

noir. it has grown 35% in just three months. a new policy is set to begin on sunday for hiv care here in california. effective as of july 1st, hiv positive patients throughout the state will be eligible to transition to long term treatment and care programs. fishes say the shift was made possible by president obama's affordable care act and centers for medicare and medicaid services. a cancer support center in southern california will be closing its doors tomorrow. cancer support center opened two years ago. the founders had rised $250,000 but needed 500,000 to keep it running. the center says it has served more than 450 people affected by cancer. the man accused of beating a priest takes the stand. what william lynch said about his intentions the day he attacked a priest who he says

we have some new information tonight on the shooting of a 10-year-old boy who was out walking with his mother in richmond yesterday. richmond police are now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman. a police spokesperson said they decided on the reward based quote on the shocking nature of this crime. the 10-year-old boy was shot in the back and is said to be in critical but stable condition. we also have new information tonight about an officer involved shooting that happened in antioch yesterday that killed a man. family members now identified the suspect as 35-year-old danny gomez. he was killed yesterday afternoon in front of his home on lasiva way. police say a distraught gomez called police to say he was going to kill himself or a police officer. gomez fired a weapon but four

officers shot him. neighbors say gomez was not a violent person and say they are shocked by the shooting. william lynch was on the stand answering accusations that he beat up a priest who he says molested him when he was a boy. robert handa is in san jose tonight with the emotional answers that william lynch had to the questioning. >> reporter: will lynch finally had a chance to tell his story when he took the stand here at the hall of justice in san jose today. his account will be crucial, he turned out to be the only witness for the defense. today will lynch told his story to the jury, he is accused of attacking father joe lidner in 2010. lynch says he and her brother were raped by lidner. on the stand lynch quickly admitted he struck lidner after

seeing the same look in lidner's eye when the sexual abuse happened. >> he had a look of getting aroused, then his eyes turned to hate. >> reporter: lynch testified he didn't want to kill lidner adding if i wanted him dead he would be dead. he also described feeling a feeling of serenity after punching lidner. another victim of lidner confronted him. >> i was surprised to see him go by. i also wanted him to look at me, i said to him you need to look at me. and it was empowering for me to do that. >> reporter: lidner has invoked the 5th amendment and today the judge refused another defense request to ford lidner to testify, closing statements

and local levels. it would also let the governor cut the budget uni lateral. a lawsuit was filed today against one of the budget trailer bills signed by governor brown on wednesday. philanthropist lunger claims that the bill is illegal. the bill moves munger's tax plan to the bottom of the november ballot and the governor's proposed measure to the top. the national highway safety administration today asked toyota to recall roughly 154,0002010 lexus rx a 350 and 450 models. toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles around the

world in recent years. two c135 fire fighting aircrafts from california are heading to colorado to help on the fierce fight there. the two planes were called up from the channels national guard base in ventura. an air national guards spokesman said the planes will leave for colorado tonight or tomorrow morning. also today officials say a body was found last night amidst the debris in a burned down home and that marks the first fatality of the fire. so far 340 homes have been destroyed. and we've got fog out there and we've got some clearing in the last hour so the fog is starting to evaporate or move away from parts of the coastline along stinson beach. you can see those areas being chewed out. we've also got some wind out at the golden gate bridge. those gusts are about 23 miles per hour right now. it was cooler today. as it has been, that's been the trend. a cooler pattern over the last several days. temperatures today kind of bottomed out. today one of the cooler days, tomorrow will be right there as

well. temperature. -- temperature will start to come out of this 83 in antioch. when you look at these numbers, rough look five, 6-degrees warmer. so temperatures a little below average certainly. cooler and moisture. a couple of fires in the bay area, more than a couple and then put out rapidly. they did not grow and make it to our segment of the newscast because of this weather pattern. and this weather pattern we're going to see over the weekend is going to continue over the weekend. you're going to hit 70 degrees as you hit the livermore valley. it's going to be very mild. eastern liver mother valley, eastern contra costa county. north eastern sonoma counties you will find those low 80s. but everybody else we're going to be in the 70s. this low pressure center is

closer to us. with it this close it's the main player and when it gets close it cools us off. you know that. this is getting close enough tonight that it's actually going to trigger drizzle right along the coast. the great highway you're going to get drizzle on highway 1. spotty drizzle look for it early in the morning. cool and mild as you go through the bay area saturday. sunday will be slightly warmer because the front won't be as close. tomorrow morning, you're driving out to go golf or take the kids to baseball or whatever you are doing you have cloud cover just like this morning. it burns off slowly and temperatures warm, but look. greens and yellows, 60s and 70s. maybe a few 80s, but 60s and 70s for the most part. 80 in brentwood. really good air quality, the five day forecast, there it is. and i'm smiling a little bit because you can watch the national news, the rest of the count trip has big issues with heat, fire and lots of problems
