mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. rosemary has a quick look at your forecast. it was a foggy morning yesterday but it was a nice day at the end of it. can we expect the same for the first day of july? >> near repeat. good morning, to you. waking up with the clouds, coastal drizzle once again. we will be slightly warmer for the afternoon. temperatures will continue to trend upward as we head into the big fourth of july holiday. i'll have those numbers coming up. three contra costa fire stations will close today. leaving more than a dozen firefighters without a job. the stations scheduled to close are bethel island and brentwood. allie rasmus is in brentwood. >> reporter: it is expected to increase fire response times according to the east contra costa fire chief. he say in an interview last month ten years ago the response time was 6.5 minutes

now it could go up to as much as 14 minutes. this is fire station 52 -- 54 excuse me. near the old downtown area. this is one of the three fire stations that will shut down. you can see in the back here they've got the firefighters that are stationed here have got their trucks and cars here. they are packed up. they are getting ready to shut this station down. officially it will close at 8:00 this morning. again it's one of three fire stations that will be closed down. now here to talk to us a little bit more about it is captain craig with the east contra costa county fire district. fire station 54. this is a sad day for you guys. >> this is a very sad day for us. i'm shutting down a station i spend a lot of time in. i'm losing fellow firefighters that i have lived with for years. ran incidents with.

calls with. and today they are no longer in play here. >> reporter: there were three firefighters that already based here that lost their jobs. >> yes. >> reporter: how will this effect the service you provide? >> still yet to be seen. it will be difficult for us that are still working here to do what we want to do and assist with the resources that we have left behind. >> and this is partly because of the parcel tax that voters failed to pass last month that would have increased some of the funding? >> correct. . it goes back a little farther. home values dropping, revenue not coming in because our is budget is based off property tax. ? because of the failure of measure s revenue is not coming in we will have to lay off people. >> reporter: now this station

and the two others the others are night sand and bethel island. they will be shutting down at #- - at 8:00 this morning. if they get another call in the next 50-55 minutes they will go out and respond to it but after that, that's the end. tomorrow a ribbon cutting ceremony will reopen fire station 25 in vallejo. the station has been closed for two years because of city budget cuts. thanks to federal grants that allowed the hiring and training of more fire stations the station must be open to accommodating them. three people in martinez are being helped by the red cross after a fire in their home. it started around 11:00 last night. firefighters first thought there was someone inside that home but later discovered the person was able to get out. however the victim later had an

asthma attack and had to be taken to the hospital. no one was hurt but the fire moved quickly. >> when we first arrived, we had fire from the back corner of the building flames about 10- 15 feet in the air. as crews went interior, it got even worse. as we ventilated the roof you could see flames about 15-20 feet more in the air. san francisco 49er aldon smith is recovering from a stab wound yesterday. it happened at a party at his house in the east san jose foothills. santa clara county sheriffs office reports two other people at the party were shot. so far no arrests have been made. csn bay area reports the 49er linebacker was trying to break up a fight when he was stabbed. he suffered minor injuries to his shoulder and abdomen. neighbors say they are not surprised about the party. >> it doesn't seem right.

we don't have these kinds of problems here. this is a private road. >> the 22-year-old smith signed a four year, $14 million with a $9 million signing bonus. the 49ers are aware of the incident and says he is resting comfortably. police say they arrested a 17-year-old boy accused of punching a teenage girl in the face. it happened after a fight broke out at the bay fair bart station. art 70 teen -- about 70 teenagers were in the station. one man is in the hospital after leading oakland police on a chase through city streets. around 1:00 a.m. police tried to pull over a stolen car instead of stopping

he sped off and crashed. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and will be arrested. an investigation is under way in a police shooting that left an armed robbery suspect dead in vallejo. the confrontation was record on someones cell phone. you can hear there police firing about 15 shots after ordering the suspect to surrender. the suspect robbed a gas station yesterday morning and took off in a stolen jeep grand cherokee. the suspect was found hiding in a backyard. >> ordered him to show his hands and surrender but he refused to do so. instead he pointed a weapon at the officers. >> no one else was hurt. according to protocol the two officers are on administrative leave. the grand cherokee was stolen

out of concord. at least 13 people are dead after violent storms sweep across the east coast. more than 70 miles an hour winds knocked down trees and power lines leaving millions of people out power. coming up at 7:15 we will go live to the washington, d.c. area. today people evacuated from the waldo fire will be able to return home to see what is left. the fire near colorado springs is 45% contain and one -- contained and one of the two most destructive fires in colorado history. more than 150 soldiers and airplanemen from the national guard have been brought in to help police staff roadblocks and patrol abandoned neighborhoods. the high park fire is fully contained. the containment came last night just after 6:00. in total the fire burned more than 87,000 acres and cost

about $38 million to fight. the i vassuation orders have been -- evacuation orders have been lifted and people may return home. >> this could be a foreshadow of what could happen in northern california. we are seeing a fire season that is starting earlier and expected to last longer. the warmer temperatures and a dry winter set the stage for intense and hard to control wild fires. usually in northern colorado it is september it is the month but now obviously it could be august and possibly now july we are into it. >> but starting july, actually nothing too hot, not too bad. rosemary giving us the great forecast. it looks like things will warm up this week? >> yeah we will see a warming trend as we head into fourth of july. slightly warmer than what we saw yesterday. this morning a lot like how we started. we have a blanket of low clouds over us. even areas that were sunny yesterday cloudy this morning.

shoplifter that hasn't spoken a were to authorities. the san francisco chronicle reports a therapist recognized the man as vincent saguid of san francisco. he was not carrying an id when he was arrested and not responded to questions. family members say he may suffer from mental illness. he is being held at the san mateo medical center. about five acres burned in a brush fire in san mateo. it broke out in a grassy area off of interstate 80 which is north of vallejo. the fire was in steep terrain and crews battled those flames from the ground and air. alameda county firefighter that died from a line of duty illness was laid to rest in livermore. 65-year-old hollis franks died after a brief battle with lung cancer. he had been with the fire department for four decades. he was also a military veteran and a purple heart recipient.

his colleagues say franks will be missed by his family, church, community, and country. there is a fundraiser today for victims of an apartment fire in san francisco back on may 6th the fire severely damaged a billing in the cities mission district. 37 apartments were damaged. many displaced residence have found different places to live. today's fundraiser is at 3:00. at least 13 people died and millions of others are without power after a series of violent storms on the east coast. a state of emergency has been declared in several states and reporter peter is live in bethesda, maryland with a look at the damage. peter. >> reporter: and claudine the state not too far from here virginia their governor bob mcdonald said we're in the middle of the largest nonhurricane power outage ever in his state.

which is real. they have a lot of weather there. that is really big. here in maryland a lot of traffic lights are out which is causing a lot of problems. some of the intersections are unruly. the power company said they restored power to 78% of their is customers. we have been here for six hours and we haven't seen anybody come here to look at this. look how crazy this is. all of these branches that fell down as the less cue squad drives on by are resting on these wires. many of which did not break. right around the corner one of the wires did snap off and it cleatly -- completely has isolated an entire section of homes or cars. the power company hasn't come over to tell them if the wire is live or not. they have been walking into

the national weather service is issuing warning for 14 states as another heat wave hits the southeast. those storms also left millions of people without power and officials are worried without air conditioning people are going to struggle to find other ways to stay cool. friday fight also brought a series of thunderstorms to indiana and now lightning may to be blame for destroying four homes. people in the city say a bolt of lightning hit the roof of a duplex and started a fire. those flames quickly spread to two more homes. leaving an entire block of charred remains. >> i wouldn't wish this on anybody. it will just take time to recover it all. >> the national lightning safety institute says one out

efforts until they get answers. five people are alive thanks to the quick actions to an off duty life guard. yesterday officials say two young boys were in the water near half-moon bay when they started struggling. one of the boys father and two others jumped in to help but they found themselves in trouble as well. the life guard that lives near the beach heard the cry for help and managed to pull all five people to safety. roanoke park man is charged with hitting a cyclist and driving off. near highway 128 on friday. police arrested the suspected driver arthur bend at his home yesterday. he is a member of new zealand pure black racing team. he is still in critical condition but according to the press democrat his friends say he is improving. a four-year-old boy is recovering after being hit by a car in oakland. this all happened yesterday afternoon at 105th avenue.

firefighters are ready to respond. firefighters turned off that light, locked up the building just after 8:00 this morning. firefighters took us inside as they closed up shop this morning. they folded the flag from the flag post out front. took down their name tags and packed up the last of their gear and belongings. the closures here are expected to increase fire response times in the fire district. the fire chief has said that it could take as long as 14 minutes for some of their crews to get to the outlying areas of the district. the nearest fire station from here is about 3 miles away. it may not seem like a significant distance, there is traffic in the downtown area during rush hour, it will take them a longer time to respond to emergencies. >> time is our our enemy. so closing out and eliminating fire engines and personnel, it's going to increase those times for us to respond.
