>> i am heather holmes. >> officials from san francisco bound for colorado to help provide aid to the peopleenthed by the wildfire there. this isioid -- people effected by the wildfire there. two people are dead as a result of the fire. 350 homes destroyed. 36,000 people forced from their homes. the fire burned 27 square miles. officials say it is 45% contained. ktvu's christien kafton is live where he stalked with the -- talked with the volunteers about their mission. we caught up with them here this afternoon. they said they could always use donations of goods and clothes but what they really need is cash. >> reporter: for weeks firefighters have been battling blazes in colorado. it stretched resources for

workers and today the salvation army called in reinforcement from the bay area. they made their way through san francisco international airport at noon. they have been supporting firefighters. she expects her skills will be put to use but she could wind up doing anything. >> there could be the opportunity that i am serving, providing food and water to the firefighters. we are as flexible as possible. >> reporter: she expects to help organize the relief efforts. >> i have expertise in the medical area, nations coming in and going out. >> reporter: won't say any kind of donation to hem -- both say any kind of donation is welcome. >> we can distribute money to the people in need to get new

underwear, basic things like that. if you want to help go to www.ktvu.com for ways to donate. both salvation army volunteers are headed out on a two week deployment. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> near fort collins residents are heading home after another fire. coming up, the damage cost from the high park fire. bart service is back to normal after delays earlier this afternoon caused by a man wandering on the tracks. officials say it was stopped around noon in san francisco and at the west oakland station. a person was walking on the tracks in oakland prompting officials to turn off the electricity. police say the man was smoking a controlled substance. he was arrested. service was stopped for an

hour. other trains were delayed 30 minutes. police chase this morning ended with a crash and the suspect in the hospital. witnesses say it started when officers tried to pull over a stolen car around 1:00 a.m. instead of stopping the driver sped off, up 73. that is when he lost -- that is when he lost control and crashed. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. authorities are trying to determine what sparked a apartment fire this morning. firefighters rushed to the buildings. squatters have been known to stay in the buildings. a spokesman says both buildings were involved when crews arrived. no one was injured. one person is recovering after escaping a house fire. the flames broke out at a home around 11:00 p.m. last night. firefighters thought there was someone inside the home but

discovered that person was able to get out. that victim had a asthma attack and had to be taken to the hospital. cause is under investigation. authorities are searching for an escaped prisoner. officials near tracy say he escaped this morning. he was serving a sentence for burglary. he was last seen wearing blue clothes with the words cdcr prisoner on the pants. anyone with information is asked to call police. we are learning details of pg&e's plan to keep customer's safe and present another disaster like the san bruno one. ktvu's janine de la vega looked at the report and joins us live. >> reporter: this neighborhood is still under repair. you can see there is a vacant

lot where homes once stood but there are signs of progress, new homes are under construction. >> reporter: they spent the afternoon hanging pictures and cabinets. they moved in three months ago. their home was rebuilt after the home was destroyed. pg&e just filed a report with the public utilities commission. they require them to provideuch dates on gas safety -- updates on their gat safety action. >> be the safest utility in the united states. >> reporter: they will be a training facility that puts employees through real life scenarios and hiring 1400 new people to support its folkish on safety merging gas centers by 2013. >> bringing them under one roof and creating one center will

him when reverend jerold linder said he leered at him like he did during the abuse. he faces up to four years in prison. a man convict offend killing a father and two sons was accused of murder two years before. an informment told the fbi he killed a rival gang member. no one was arrested for the killing. his attorney did not comment. he was sentenced to three life terms for the killings. a spokeswoman said it has been frustrating for the family to know he may have committed other crimes and had been the suggest of a federal investigation prior to the murders and yet he was left on the streets. it will take firefighters longer to respond to emergency.

ktvu's allie rasmus tells us, three stations shut down this morning and 15 firefighters lost their jobs after cuts to the fire budget. >> reporter: firefighters unloaded their gear from the truck. at 8:00 p.m. this morning, they shut down. >> i am losing friends and fellow firefighters that i have worked with and, yeah it is sad. >> reporter: one of the last things they did before they left is turn off that red service light. it is always kept on to let people know that firefighters are in the building and ready to respond. but it is lights out for this station. they were all on the chopping block after voters rejected a parcel tax. >> it is too bad and i think people will be sorry. >> they saved her life. >> reporter: it was the paramedics at station 54 who responded when she had a heart

attack. >> 2 minutes. >> reporter: he says the closures will increase response time. it could take crews up to 14 minutes. >> we will respond the best we can. we will prioritize the emergencies and -- that is the resources we have. >> reporter: one possibility in the future, 50 volunteer firefighters. >> somewhere between 9-10,000 volunteers. >> reporter: they will remain closed till there is money in the budget. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. now that the california ban is in place, they are trying to get similar bands in other states. they are suing for allowing sales of them anywhere in the country. if the same type of liver were

and more. >> on the video, what you see, one here at the printer and one here at the computer. >> reporter: but she says what the video shows is one loan man breaking thine property -- breaking tine -- breaking into the property. there have been four break ins. the first one the worst. they could have taken this computer but it was chained down. all of this at a place where they help kids stay off the streets for free. >> reporter: it appears they came and left last night through this fence, you wouldn't blame them for putting up raiser wire but that is not the environment they want to create for the kids. but they did install cameras

after the first break in. >> for the crooks i would say there are surveillance video all over the property. please stay off of our property. >> reporter: they hope this is the last video they have to share. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. friends and family of a missing man were back out looking for any signs of the missing resident. he was last seen on monday night at peer 32. his family was looking for him yesterday. they just left the giants- dodger game and was standing at the end of the peer. at least 20 states in the mid-west, southeast and northeast dealt with a series of deadly storms and heat. the severe weather has killed at least a dozen people and left hundreds of thousands

without power. >> reporter: big smiles. this was the scene sunday at a ice give away in virginia where many remained without power. after stormy weather field by a brutal heat wave. that brought men tee the store. -- many to the store. >> there is no ice anywhere. we went to 5 stores and there is no ice. >> reporter: they battered several states. several fatalities were reported, including a man who died here in virginia when his vehicle was hit by a tree. she shares her experience. >> the wind just suddenly hit. it was like -- it was intense. ran inside, put my stuff down, figuring out what i would do and i heard the tree. >> reporter: 800 plus temperature records have been

broken this weekend. it hits close to home for her. >> horrible. all our phones are dead and in case of an emergency we can't make a call. >> residents in colorado are heading back home now that fire crews contained the high park fire. that broke out three weeks ago and destroyed 259 homes. crews say the fire burned 87,000 acres and cost $38 million to fight. the high park was smaller and less destructive than the waldo canyon burning in colorado springs. the opening of what is known as the range management fire season. the fires are used to control unwanted vegetation from grazing land. they will decide which days burns will be allowed. it runs through the end of next

a vote in sacramento this week could keep california's high-speed rail project on track or cause more delays. the governor is pushing lawmakers to approve state bonds to build the first stretch. governor jerry brown says the state must move fast to capture federal grants. democrats support the project but say it face as tight vote.

two dead. in afghanistan a man dressed in a police officer's uniform shot and killed three foreign troops today. they didn't give any more information on the three killed or the circumstances of the shooting. 215 foreign troops have been killed this year. in mexico voters went to polls to pick a new president and congress. they ran mexico for 70 years. a rule that was tainted by corruption and fraud. the party was outed in 2000 but they gained popularity in recent years as the economy stalled. a new report shows more and more workers from mexico are heading back home. figures show more mexican immigrants are leaving the u.s.

recapping our top stories. the salvation army called in reinforcements from the bay area ato help with the wildfire in colorado. two salvation army workers flew to colorado this morning. they will relieve some of the aid workers there. they expect to be in colorado for two weeks. >> bart service returned to normal today. a man wandered on to the tracks near the west oakland station. officials turned off the

electricity and stopped service. the man was arrested and service resumed. >> pg&e filed a report with the public utilities commission detailing a new safety plan. they say part of the plan includes building a training facility that will put employees through real life scenarios and they will hire 1400 people to support its focus on safety and compliance. several public transit agency implemented fair hikes. single ride tickets $2. bart fares go up 5-15 cents. golden gate transit bus and ferry fairs are increasing by 5% and cal train the prices are going up 25-50 cents for paper tickets. and today you will be able to board money from the

local intern program. they will come from high schools. the program is intended for students studying science, engineering and math. they will be paired with facebook engineers as mentors. oakland's public school drop out rate fell. 27% of students dropped out before graduation day. that is down 5% from the year before. oakland's graduation rate rose 4%. still well below the state average of 76%. another hearing set for tomorrow when the fight over the estate of thomas kinkade. at issue are two pages of handwritten notes thomas kinkade's girlfriend said hep wanted her to have -- he wanted her to have that claim.
