information on an overnight tragedy. highway patrol is looking for a hit and run driver responsible for a fatal crash in sonoma county. it happened shortly after midnight on a rural roadway in petaluma and minutes ago ktvu alex savidge learned the victim was just 16 years old. alex. >> reporter: the chp officer i talked with in just the last half hour just confirmed to me the victim in this mornings accident was a 16-year-old boy from american canyon. his name not being released this morning. the young man was inside a pickup truck that slammed head on into another truck early this morning and now the chp looking for the second driver involved here that walked off after the accident. this happened just after midnight on a rural road. lake view road. just south of petaluma. downtown petaluma. a witness to the crash told us this morning that the driver that survived the accident actually walked up to the truck with the teenager inside to check on him. that person the young man the

teenager was unconscious and eventually died from his injuries. and our witness says the driver that survived this crash claims the victim was at fault to the accident. >> he came down and was looking in there and we were there for about three to five minutes. he said the guy just came across the guy in the truck the deceased said he came across the line the center line and hit him. >> reporter: despite what that driver told our witness at the scene, the chp is confirming to me this morning they do believe the man that fled the scene of the accident this morning is the driver that was at fault for this crash. they believe he's the one that swerved across this two lane highway and caused the crash. they only have a vague description on that driver the man they are looking for likely suffered injuries in the accident. he is driving a 69 white ford pickup truck that remained at the scene. he walked off after this deadly crash that we do understand

killed a teenager. live this morning in petaluma alex savidge. this morning police are investigating after a person was found shot to death in a car near the oakland hills. police found the shooting victim after 6:00 last night on sunkist drive in oakland. police say the victim had been shot at least once. officers have not relesioned any other information. sonoma county sheriffs department is investigating a possible hate crime in guerneville. 49-year-old man told deputies he was attacked around 11:30 last tuesday night after leaving a guy bar on third street. he says unknown individuals attacked him and at least one of them used antigay threats and slurs. the man suffered cuts and abrasions. anyone with information about this attack is asked to call the sonoma county sheriffs department. the man on trial charged with beating up a priest will return to court this morning. tara moriarty is in san jose where closing arguments in the william lynch trial get under way in a few hours.

tara. >> reporter: you know this two week trial was supposed to be about an elderly priest getting physically abused. it's taking on a completely different tone. it's about the man that wants to hue mailuate the priest. these closing arguments are set to begin at 9:00 this morning. once they are done the jury can begin deliberating. we watched 44-year-old william lynch walk into the court before he took the stand. he cried while testifying about his 2010 confrontation. lynch says when he walked into the retirement home he didn't plan to hit lindner but when he leered at him he had flash backs of the attack. he described in detail the molestation that took place on 1975 on a camping trip. he cities the priest violently sodomized him and forced the brothers to orally onulate open

-- onulate open're. the brothers refer revealed -- never revealed the abuse. the brothers did want win a $625,000 settlement from the church. now lindner while on the stand denied abusing lynch so the judge had his testimony thrown out. now lynch faces up to four years in prison if convicted. live from san jose i'm tara moriarty. a homeless man is in jail this morning accuse of deliberately setting a fire at a vacant fire building in concord. it started on claytonway and will low pass road. 32-year-old michael moss was taken into custody just steps away from the building he's accused of building. moss was just one of many squatters that was living in the foreclosed apartment. >> they all on drugs. they all kept going back over

there. this place is bad for them. they all be tweaking and there is a lot of stuff that goes on around here. >> investigators won't say why the arson suspect would burn himself out of his own temporary home. investigators in san jose say an unintended fire at a homeless camp set off a grass fire on communications hill and started shortly before 5:00 yesterday afternoon. firefighters managed to stop the wind whipped flames from spreading to several hill top homes. no one was hurt. a small earthquake rattled the city of millbrae last night. 2.5 magnitude quake had an epicenter about three miles west, southwest of the city. it hit just before 9:00. the earthquake was felt by a few people but so far no damages or injuries are reported. battle over president obama's health care reform is not over despite last weeks supreme court ruling that says it is constitutional. republicans still vowing to repeal it while the white house

says it's time to accept the ruling and move on. >> it's time to get over the debate and implement the law. what they don't want is to be taken back to the old debate. they want to get on be focusing our economic growth and creating jobs. >> the american people do not want to get on this path. they do not want the government telling them what kind of insurance policy they have to buy and how much they will pay for it. if you don't like it we'll tax you. >> house minority leader nancy pelosi calls repeal efforts a waste of time. saying it would never pass the democratly controlled senate. but the house has scheduled a mostly symbolic vote. the party that ruled mexico for most of the last century is now back in power. coming up at 6:15 what president elect enrique says he will do about the drug violence plaguing mexico. 6:07 is the time right now. let's check back in with sal. checking in on the bridge at this time? >> i am.

and you know i haven't seen a lot of slow traffic. it's not like i'm hoping for it but we are watching for it. let's take a look at it. there is a little bit of slowing temperature it's not major. they don't turn the metering lights on until 6:15. i have a feeling today's backup won't be that deep. a lot of people this week have been taking time off surrounding the fourth of july. certainly after the fourth i think we will see some time off. maybe even some before. this is a look now at the san mateo bridge. it looks pretty good. a little overcast weather to the other side. actually almost everywhere. the traffic is not effected. dumbarton bridge looks good as well. concord and walnut creek traffic looks good. 6:08 let's go to steve. >> thank you. very good morning. the big news continues to be in the middle of the country with blistering heat. nashville was 109. unbelievable. charlotte has had 104 for three

consecutive days. we are on the western edge of everything. the high has not built back into the west. we get the morning fog and low clouds. even though the water temps have gone way up. they have gone up about five to seven degrees. a lot of low clouds. very mild overnight fog. three to six degrees warmer for many. highs building in slightly. it will be a warming ten. there is no north, northeast wind. it just looks like a sea breeze. it has been coming down a little bit. west at sfo. 150s and 60s. san jose overcast and a balmy 63 degrees. even napa airport at 59. oakland 59. hayward at 60. when you are already sitting at 60 degrees it wouldn't take long to warm up. system to the north will kind of stay right there. high pressure system not showing signs of doing too much expect building in a little bit. as it does that means the

nationality of these troops killed yesterday. but it is the latest in a string of shootings of nato troops by afghan forces or infill traitors dressed in afghan uniforms. soldier at fort bragg in north carolina that shot and killed his commander and turned the gun on himself has died. the 27-year-old soldier from kansas was recently charged with stealing a tool kit and had been awaiting court- martial. a 27-year-old soldier from vacaville was also hurt in that shooting. grizzly discovery in montreal could be linked to the recent mismemberment case involving a canadian porn actor. a human head was found in a park. if it is a head it could belong to a chinese student they say was dismembered by luke magnata. he is accused of killing the student that was his lover and mailing the body parts to political parties and schools. the party that ruled mexico for most of the last century is taking back power.

ktvu alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom tracking the results of sunday's election. alison. >> reporter: he's a telogennic young governor and he may be the president of mexico. while his tough rival has not yet conceded 45-year-old enrique pena has claimed victory with about 38% of the vote. his institutional revolutionary party has been out of power for amid a decade but he is promising good government, better results on the crack town on drug cartels and more economic growth. some analysts in the united states are skeptical and say he has not offered enough specific plans for reform. there are also allegations today of vote tampering. i'll have more on that in my next update in about an hour. a plan to drill for oil in ohio cemeteries is causing a lot of controversy this

morning. three cemeteries in eastern ohio say they have received proposals to lease minimal rights for a fee and rights. supporters say drilling so deep under ground it does not disturb the cemetery. three east contra costa fire stations are closed. one in brentwood, knightsen, and bethel island shut down because of budget cuts. in a last ditch effort failed when voters rejected measure s. this was a parcel tax aimed at increasing revenue. because it failed the district was forced to cut $3 million from its budget. closing the stations and laying off 15 firefighters. the state department of forestry is planning to conduct a planned burn. the burn will take place in grant ranch county park about eight miles east of san jose. just so you know smoke will probably be visible in the san jose area and south santa clara

centimeters. experiments say many of the neighborhoods were built on landfill just a few feet over the hides tides. people in the mid atlantic are bracing for another round of severe weather. they are still cleaning up from deadly storms over the weekend that left moms without power. coming up at 6:35 we'll go live to maryland with how people are staying cool in the hot temperatures. peg e -- pg&e has a new plan to keep the pipelines safe. the company just filed a report that sets out guidelines now required by state law. they include building a new training facility. by 2014 pg&e also plans to hire 1400 new workers to support its effort on safety. >> creating one comprehensive distribution center will allow us to view our entire system in one place in realtime.

>> but people that live in the san bruno neighborhood area where a gas pipe explosion killed eight people say that plan sounds like what pg&e should have been doing all along. san jose police have identified a man found fatally stabbed in a parking lot on friday night. police say 41-year-old harry clark was town in that parking lot on winchester boulevard. police are still investigating but it does not appear to be gang related. olympic trial runoff is scheduled in oregon to determine who earns the last spot in the women's 100 meters for the london games. but it may not happen. there are reports that jenna is reconsidering her decision to take part in the runoff. she and allison officially died for third last week but she was originally named as the third place finisher before officials ruled it a tie.

petaluma. ktvu alex savidge has learned that victim was just 16 years old. alex. >> reporter: we have learned we have confirmed from the chp that the victim involved in this deadly hit and run crash that happened overnight a 16- year-old boy from american canyon. so far his name not being release. obviously his family still needs to be notified. the teenager was driving into a pickup truck when it slammed into outrock on a rural road here. the chp searching for the second driver involved who they say caused this crabby swerving into the on coming lane. and than after the accident the other driver walked off. the crash happened just after midnight right at lakeville road and lakeville road one. this man tells us the driver that survived the accident walked up to the other truck to check on that teenage driver that was unconscious inside. our witness describes what the hit and run driver did before leaving.

>> he came down and was looking in there and we were there for about three to five minutes and then when i turned around the other guy had already left. >> reporter: chp only has a vague description on the hit and run driver they are looking for. the man likely suffered seriously injuries in the accident. his pickup truck that he left behind at the scene is a 69 white ford pickup truck. the chp trying to figure out if alcohol may have played a role here. we do understand lakeville road back open at this point. again after a deadly hit and run accident that killed a 16- year-old boy this morning and search is on for the driver that cause that crash. we hope to learn more information about that suspect as the morning moves on. alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. the battle over thomas kinkade $66 million estate returns to court this morning. the painter died at his home on

april 6th after overdosing on alcohol and valium. kinkade's live in girlfriend has submitted handwritten notes that she says he wanted her to inherit his mansion and $10 million booking kid's estrange -- kinkade's estranged wife fights. fire at independence high school on education park drive started at 6:45 last night. firefighters say a side door on a theater building at the school was set on fire. it melted a plexus glass window and damaged fire on the outside -- and damage the siding on the outside of the house. fire was reported by neighbors that smelled smoke around 5:30 last night. no one was inside the house and no one was hurt. later this morning vallejo

fire station 25 will officially reopen. ktvu allie rasmus live at the station this morning where allie firefighters have already moved in. >> reporter: that is right they started moving in a week ago. some people that live in this neighborhood have noticed the fire service light was turned on a week ago. the red light at the top of the garage there it lets people in the area know this is an active fire station. this is fire station 25. and today firefighters will celebrate the official reopening of the station and something neighbors in the area were very happy to hear about. >> you feel a lot safer when they are here. because that way fire trucks have to come so far away. i think it's way over on the other side of vallejo. in july of 2010 they faced steep cuts and forced to close

three of its eight fiestas and station 25 was one of them. a year ago they found out they were getting a grant from fema. they used that money to open a fireback. and now some of the firefighters are ready to begin their work here at the new station 25. vallejo fire department will have the official reopening ceremony and they would like the community to join them. they will be holding that here at fire station 25 on 595 mini drive in vallejo. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 morning news. many forced to flee a raging wild fire are allowed to turn home to survey the damage. it was still a shock when they saw the char remaps of their up close. >> this was what was the garage. >> the fire is 45 contain.

but it has destroy almost 350 homes. sweltering heat and no power those are the conditions for many people this morning. reporter stacy ken is in montgomery county maryland with effort to restore the power. how is it going out there stacy? >> reporter: you know slowly. i think is probably the most honest answer i can give you, pam. there have been at the height of the storm across the country about 4 million people that were without power. the latest number i have been looking at was at 2 million. here in montgomery county the suburb of washington, d.c. and maryland, d.c., virginia. it has been an absolutely brutal weekend. we had close to a million out of power in just virginia alone. about 400,000 in maryland. we are getting crews from all over the country to come here.

and this of course as blistering heat continues not only here but across the country. some areas like the area i'm in now will be getting a cool down if you can call it that into the 90s. the temperatures will keep on rising and some parts of the country especially to the south they will remain in triple digits which of course is hard to work in and harder to bear if you are without hour and air conditioning -- power and air conditioning. >> i can't even imagine. behind you it looks pretty busy. a lot of people out and about in all of this. imagine of surprised. are any companies sort of letting people take a break and deal with this? >> reporter: you know it's funny when we got to this intersection this morning you are right this is a very busy intersection. it was actually dark and there are many, many power lights that are -- traffic lights that are dark. that is part a creating a terrible commute and a lot of confusion. this power just come on a couple hours ago. yes people are out and going to

work. some folks may want to because that is the only place they can find air conditioning. i can tell you a lot of people having insurance adjustors come to their homes for trees on roofs, cars, fences, you name it. it's really unbelievable. >> thank you for that update. stacy that is there in maryland where the power at least there has been restored. boy not for as she mentioned could be as many as two million people. >> if it's not winter storms it's spring storms. it's a perfect example why they pay what they do. >> there is a reason, yes. time now 6:38 on the clock. let's check in with sal and what do you see? >> we are looking at traffic that is not all that bad. although there is a little slowing out there. you can see the bay bridge toll plaza it looks good. for this time any way. there is a little bit of a backup. not that deep. just past 880. if it stays true to form we

and laid together in an open grade. opposition activists say syrian forces killed more than 40 people when they fired a moe tar bomb in a funeral procession. tara moriarty is live in san ho. tara. >> reporter: that is right. closing arguments set to begin at 9:00 this morning. what was interesting about the testimony from william lynch that happened on friday he had been through therapy and wanted to move past this alleged sex abuse. he decided the best way to do that was to confront the former priest. the 44-year-old said he had no plans to attack father lindner that day. but when he leered at him he had flash backs to the alleged abuse and struck him. if the defense rests closing arguments will start. once that happens the jury can deliberate. lynch took the stand friday and cried while testifying about his 2010 confrontation with
