. good morning everyone, a large fire burning several homes, one person is under arrest. a woman shot, her adult son beaten in a violent home invasion attack, what led to this crime. a 17 day sit in comes to an end why they had to shut down a protest happening at one of their elementary schools. and the beating of a south bay priest is now in the hands of a judge. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues.

good morning, let's go to steve paulson. >> we have low clouds and fog, temperatures are much cooler by about 5 to 7 degrees and still we will rebound with temperatures away from the coast, 60s and 70s, here is sal. and traffic is moving well on the san mateo bridge, that traffic looks good all the way to the high-rise. also the morning commute at the bay bridge toll plaza is beginning to become more crowded let's go back to the desk. we have a story we first told you about. one man has been arrested after neighbors spotted him running from a huge fire holding a gas can't -- gas can. they believe they may have found the same gas can. >> that's right. >> reporter: right in front of

this white van there is crime scene tape and in front of that is a black suv under it, a gas can and they believe the person holding that can may have started the fire. here is what the flames looked like out of shore boulevard right out of highway 101. you can see the smoke and orange glow from the freeway. this is a four-alarm fire and it took 120 firefighters to put it out. they also had to contend with it and that was a challenge. they had to breakout of a building where squatters had been and one person was treated at the scene from smoke inhalation. we saw a man run from the scene carrying that gas can. >> he said he didn't start the fire but up there the police grabbed him, handcuffed him and threw him in the back of the

patty wagon. >> reporter: now here is a look at the suspect. he is 61 years old and neighbors say he had been living there is a squatter. neighbors said they reported it to housing authorities and police and nothing had been done and they even tried kicking out the people themselves and this exact place went up in flames three years ago to the day and you can see it is a complete loss. there is damage to three other buildings and if we pan to the left, you can see they were staged by firefighters and red cross is on the scene trying to help families who are displaced . >> police are now looking for three gunmen wanted for a violent home invasion robbery

and alex an adult son his mother was shot. >> reporter: they barged their way inside and that 62-year-old woman was shot and underwent surgery late last night. as you can see this is roped off with crime scene investigation time and this happened just after 10:00 last night. all the people who live here were forced into the family room but at some point a fight broke out between a resident and a suspect and that's when the suspect opened fire and the woman was hit. they did not -- police did not give us an update on the woman's condition and the adult son was beaten and the three would be robbers, police have not put out a description of them and they have also not said if anything was stolen from the house. alex savage ktvu channel 2

morning news. it was a very intense scene, police took exclusive video off south king road and they were looking for a man wanted for a serious crime. the search lasted several hours but there was no sign of that wanted man. happening now, an early morning raid at lakeview's elementary school where parents and teachers have been staging a sit in. here with more on how they were told to clear out. >> reporter: they are shutting down 5 elementary -- elementary schools lakeview was set foreclosure and became a focal point and this would have been the 17th day of the protest but police moved in and broke it up. protesters have simply moved their tents and sleeping equipment outside of the steps and protesters are still upset

and they say their demands have not been met and they plan to continue their protest. now off to the left, you can see where the entrance is to the driveway, there is about three to four standing guard. they are milling around and there are about a dozen or so patrol cars. so far nobody we know has been arrested but police tell us there are still a few protesters inside the school and we are concerned those protesters could be arrested. oakland spokesperson explained why he believed this needed to end. >> really this is the culmination of a 17 day standoff where squatters have been? violation of the law. they had a chance to make a statement and we need to get on with the preparations for the school year which involves the use of this site.

>> reporter: now next year lakeview will be used as an administrative building and that's what protesters are upset about, they say their demands have not been met they want the school superintendent to resign or have a rally. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 morning news. and jury deliberations in the will lynch trial are expected to resume. will lynch is accused of felony assault and philly elder abuse after an attack on reverand jerold linder in may of 2010. will lynch said reverand jerold linder violently raped him in 1925. >> we hope the jury understands this was way overcharged and there was no great bodily injury and reverand jerold linder walked away with nothing but a cut. >> reporter: the jury could reduce the charges to

border. ktvu channel 2 morning news' allison burns has the announcement that could come with in a month from president barack obama. >> reporter: the associated press is reporting that president barack obama is considering cutting the number of nuclear u.s. warheads by a third. now back in march, the u.s. arizona the -- arsenal said they are inching to shrink the arsenal to 1,700 or 1100. the coalition of former world leaders has this map of all of the countries that have nuclear weapons and they are considering eliminating them all together saving the u.s. billions of dollars. one lawmaker said the idea of a dramatic reduction in the

number of nuclear weapons is a preposterous notion. reporting live allison burns ktvu channel 2 morning news. the parents of a former cal student are suing the university saying they are responsible for the sexual abuse that drove their son to suicide. they claim a doctor at university run healthcare facility repeatedly sexually abused their son. they say they are ultimately responsible since the university hired a doctor now accused of having sexual relations with several students and parents are seeking unspecified damages. the third largest bank agreed to pay half a billion dollars to settle an interest rate scandal. the departure comes a day before he is scheduled to testify before a british

parliamenttary commit if i. they want to know if they use it to set rates for bank loans and credit cards. jp morgan chase is under investigation for allegedly manipulating key bench mark rates. the beijing government plans to ban shark 15 soup at official bank quits. they say it could take up to three years to put the ban in place. celebrities including former nba star vowed not to eat shark 15 products. -- shark fin products. pg&e says an unground equipment failure knocked out power to 4300 customers and they are now working to restore

look good approaching the 880 split. and perhaps you are trying to catch a flight, 101 is a good time at this hour. let's go to steve. it looks like it will burn off, temperatures are much cooler than yesterday, and that's the big news weatherwise. we had a lot of low clouds and some areas are clear and we have temperatures in the upper 40s especially towards the north bay. there is still a component out to the big valley and upper 40s in santa rosa, mid-50s and 63, that is a big difference but we will still rebound and the system is to the north, a little dip might occur on thursday and it is just day-to- day changes. fog, sun, warmer there is sun out there coast and bay. upper 80s and a few near 90s

erhardt was lost. they are searching a tiny island where they believe she crashed into the pacific ocean. they are spending more than $2 million and they hope to confirm their theory. >> we will do the best job we can to find whatever there is to finds. we think the erhardt plane is there. erhardt's disappearance holds special interest and her attempt to fly around the world starts here at the oakland airport. we are looking for help to finds a livermore man missing for more than a week. todd cook, now he went missing from his home late last -- june 23rd or early the following morning. investigators do not believe or suspect foul play but they do say the family is concerned.

if you have any information you are asked to contact the sheriff's office. and for oakland fire stations, this means from now until next june, two fire companies will be out of service for three consecutive days. our company refers to the separate crews and brownouts will affect stations and in this case the station will close for three days. we want to make sure we don't have any serious impact within one area of the city or that we are closing stations up in our wild urban high fire season. they are aware these burn outs come ahead of the 4th of july holiday and they will have all of the available resources monitoring and all illegal firework activity. san jose will be 0 going to the london olympics but will not compete in the 100-meter

gas can is, underneath this black suv, you can see they are sort of staying and we don't know if that is gasoline or not but that's where two women said they saw a woman stash a gas can and police believe he may have started a fire. let's look at these flames, they shooted out of a home on bay shore boulevard right off of highway 101 at 3:00. it took 100 firefighters to put it out. crews had to contend with live wires for 45 minutes and that was quite a challenge. neighbors say waters -- squatters broke into a building where squatters have been living for years. >> i want to prevent this from happening again. i am devastated and shocked at the same time, i don't know how to feel. >> reporter: now here is a look at video where police led the suspect away in handcuffs. he is 61 years old and had been

living in the house as a squatter. neighbors said they had reported it to housing authority and police but nothing had been done. it was set on fire three years ago to the day. it is a complete loss but firefighters were able to save the two buildings on the end and red cross is helping those who have been displaced and one person was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene but everybody did get out safely. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. and in other overnight news, three people escaped from a fire where firefighters responded to this home on entry way. it looks like the fire started near a shed and quickly spread to a deck. they are working to determine what the cause of the fire was and right now it does not look to be suspicious. police have raided a sit in

at lakeview elementary school in oakland and allie rasmus is where teachers and protesters have been protesting for weeks. >> reporter: that's right, this has been going on for 17 days and the sit in, this has been going on, at lakeview elementary school. in the last few minutes we have seen them secure the building and remove the banners they have hung up on the fence. they moved in at 4:00 this morning and told the protesters, 20 or so of them they had to leave the property. now you can see some of the protesters have moved their tents and they are packing up and some of them have moved them out and now it looks like they are cleaning up in this area. we have learned two protesters were arrested just within the last half hour and these are people who had been inside the school. police found them and told them they had to leave so they were

detained. they were protesting the open school board's decision and the protesters in the last two weeks had daily workshops for anybody who wanted to come by and 20 people had been sleeping in tents staging the sit in at lakeview elementary in the past two weeks. >> we didn't want it to come to this situation but really there was no middle ground to come to with the protesters. they were looking for the resignation of a successful superintendent or that the five proposed schools slated foreclosure be reopened. >> other folks really need the money and they can find the money, only $2 million and instead of allocating the money they are closing down the schools. >> reporter: right now you are looking at the underpass right

near lakeview elementary, but for the most part, we have reopened the street and again 2 protesters were arrested. protesters are not did he having up a valley at 5:00 this afternoon. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 morning news. in just about five minutes nurses will walk off the job at sutter hospital at berkeley in oakland, eden medical center and mills peninsular facility in san mateo and burlingame. nurses say sutter has proposed eliminating sick leave and increasing healthcare payments. 3500 nurses are expected to strike. new video of an incredible heat related accident, an suv went airborne over driving a buckled road and the incident was caught on a cell phone. the suv went several feet in

time. michael harman swerved into oncoming traffic and swerved head-on and our ktvu channel 2 morning news was there when harman surrendered to authorities 10 hours after the deadly crash and he now faces vehicular man slaughter. he faces maximum charges, officers will be out looking for drivers who are speeding under the influence or not wearing a seat belt, the maximum enforcement period starts and continues through midnight tomorrow. 34 people were killed on california highways on the 4th of july holiday and officers are hoping that number is drastically reduced this time around. >> stay at home, sal you and i talk about this. stay at home, hang with the neighbors, yes, and not go anywhere, no driving. and traffic is doing well,

gas can. neighbors say it was the same home that went up in flames three years ago to the day. will lynch attacked a priest who allegedly molested him as a young boy. if convicted, will lynch could face up to four years in prison. some 35 nurses will walk off the job in sutter hospitals, alameda and san mateo hospitals will be affected by the one day strike, nurses are upset about the cuts to healthcare benefits and sick leave. three men were wanted for a violent home invasion robbery. alex savage tells us why two people in the home were hurt. >> reporter: the suspects confronted the woman who lives here outside of her place and then barged inside. the 62-year-old woman ended up shot and her son was beaten. investigators are still processing the crime scene.

. welcome back, taking a ride to the big bored, great knews from some of the car makers, chrysler up 20%, they also beat the street. we are following developing news right now from napa county, highway patrol is launching a helicopter to try and rescue a lot of an injured hiker. chp learned of the missing hiker just after midnight and the man is in the area with some tall trees and is unable to leave on his own. authorities have been in contact with him and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. and a hit-and-run crash, cyclist is expected in court today. author had been -- arthur had been drinking when he left the crash and he is michael from
