he was detained after major fire in san francisco. in the past hour something else happened. good afternoon. we head to oakland for breaking news a gravel spill that shutdown lanes of southbound interstate 880. chp says this still happened

about 10:20 this morning when a dump truck lost its load just north of broadway. still initially covered three lanes when news chopper 2 was overhead just after 11:00, the closure was down just 2 lanes. as you can see traffic is backed up for miles headed towards the area. big rigs are being allowed to use 580 until crews have the spilled cleaned up. san francisco investigators are calling to the scene of four alarm fire that's been ruled suspicious. it happened around 101 280 junction. new development including arresting that have just been made. >> reporter: police just arrested a woman less than an hour ago. she is being booked along with her boyfriend on arson charges in a downtown jail right now. this man said they ran for

their lives at 3:00 this morning. >> not going to make it better to start yelling. >> i understand. i understand. >> reporter: he's angry because he and other two other people witnessed this man running carrying a gas can. >> reporter: neighbors grilled the man about it. >> i took it out of the house. >> i need you guys to go somewhere else. >> reporter: police took the 61- year-old into custody. they say he had been plotting in an pay bonn donned home off highway 101. >> my girlfriend took the stairs. >> reporter: fire officials say the fire broke out on the bottom floor. the man says the fire started on the top floor where his girlfriend was.

>> there was the smell of gas in there. >> reporter: investigators seized the gas can stashed nearby the car. >> the initial report that we had somebody leaving the scene. >> reporter: she said she and others have asked police and housing authority to help kick out the squatters for the past 3 years. >> i mean, i'm devastated, shocked at the same time. i don't know how to feel. >> reporter: the same house was destroyed by fire 3 years ago to the day. officials believe that was due to fireworks. now 130 firefighters battled flames that destroyed more homes across the street. 10 people were forced out of their homes, including two children. again, the investigation continues here off mount well we'll have much more coming up on our news at 5:00.

ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, sarah. we first told you last night on ktvu at 5:00 fire investigators say the connection between squatters and fire is a growing problem. a man was arrested on sunday for allegedly starting this fire at an apartment building in concord. investigators say the building had been in foreclosures but squatters still moved in. county fire investigator said at least one fire is started by squatters every day in the bay area. he says the danger comes when the utilities are shut off and the people living there have to improvise. the cause of this house fire in danville is under investigation and it began shortly after midnight on century way. it appears the fire started there in a shed and quickly spread to the deck. all three people who were inside the house made it up safely. firefighters say right now the fire does not look suspicious. jury deliberations continue this noontime in the william lynch assault trial in san

jose. jurors heard closing arguments yesterday and deliberated for about half an hour. lynch was accused of felony assault and felony elder abuse in a 2010 attack. lynch says the presexually abused him and his brother when they were young boys in 1975. if convicted he could face up to 4-years in prison. a morning police raid forced 20 people off the grounds of an oakland elementary school. the parents and community activists had been camped at the school for protest for over 2 weeks. explains why the protest may not be over. >> reporter: they were kicked off the property this morning but the protesters have moved their signs and equipment out of the sidewalk in front of the school. they set up a tent and table of course across the street and they've been standing in the median here holding up signs. protesters are planning their next move after police ended their sit in this morning.

school district workers installed a new fence to block the driveway of the elementary school. it was the sight of 17 day protest that came to an end at 4:00 this morning when police moved this and told the 20 or so people camped out to leave. >> they were expecting an additional. we have a lot of plans and we've been using it in space in a positive way. it was disappointing. >> we wanted to come to a law enforcement situation. really, there was no middle ground where we could meet with the protesters. they were protesting resignation of a very successful school superintendent or that the five elementary schools propose for closure be re-opened. >> reporter: two protesters were arrested. the people involved protesting the unified school district to shutdown 5 elementary schools. >> we have twice as many schools as has been the average

california district our size. we have 17,000 fewer students than we had a decade ago. >> they're continuing the same policies. we had 17,000 more students 10 years ago before they started refunding the schools, closing it all. >> reporter: protesters set up camp on june 15, the last day of school year. they've been using this space until police told them to leave this morning. and school district workers also had no trespassing sign. they posted on the fence. the trick plans to convert this pool into an administrative building. meanwhile protesters say they plan big root, they're having a rally here at 5:00 this evening. live in oakland, ally, ktvu channel 2 news. caster valley school district blames state funding cuts. funding will be reduced by almost $1,500 per student next year. but the district superintendent tells the daily review that it

has enough money in reserves to avoid major cuts, at least for now. but he says governor brown's tax plan failed and the ballot box in november. the district could face an $8 million deficit next year. the west school district is considering placing another parcel tax measure before voters, just last month measure k was conceded but last night the school voted unanimously to measure support for a parcel tax measure on the november ballot. the school board will decide whether to move forward with the measure next month. the oakland police crime lab is under funded and understaffed that's according to alameda report released last week. at one point last year police acknowledged that there were nearly 1,000 unsolved sexual assaults of homicide. they found the city is taking

little action to address the backlog and staffing -- they recommend oakland consolidate the crime lab with almeda county. police across the south bay are looking for a wanted man. they're exclusive video of policeman hunt in east san jose late last night. officers are looking for a man wanted for a serious crime several miles north. investigators are not revealing the specifics of that crime, so far there's been no sign of the wanted man. police in union city are looking for 3 men wanted for violent home invasion. it happened shortly after 10:00 last night inside a home on hanford street. ktvu alex tells one of the intruders shot a woman during the hold up. >> this was blocked off by crime scene tape throughout the morning as investigators collected evidence inside. union city police say the 62- year-old woman who lives here was shot during a home invasion

last night. andrew jury with fireworks turned out to be gunshot. he watched a woman taken away by paramedics still conscious. >> they looked like they were rattled, shaken up. >> reporter: that woman underwent surgery late last night and commander ben told me she's in stable condition now at the hospital. he says the search for the armed intruder is a top priority. >> we're hoping that she'll make full recovery. we do want the community to know that we've put significant resources in this case. >> investigators say this all started when the 3 armed men confronted the home own outside her place and then barged inside with her. the entire family was eventually forced into one room. that's when police say one of the residents fought back and one of the intruders open fire hitting the woman. police say one of her adult sons was also beaten but he's expected to be okay. this violent attack now has neighbors like sale czar on edge. >> i was worried.

my wife and everybody was concerned, you know, just for the family. but i still don't understand how people houses shooting people. >> reporter: investigators are still trying to figure out why of all the houses in this neighborhood, this particular place was targeted last night. police commander tells me at this point the home invasion appears to be random. in union city alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. southwest airlines flight has landed safely after report of smoke on the plane. fire engines were on hand with the flight out of las vegas made an emergency landing. passengers and crew had noticed a smoky smell in the cabin. everyone got off the plane and no one husband hurt. so far they've seen no smoke. it's not a question of money, but there's been cuts in basic services. >> obvious strike again you'll hear more on the dispute for

nurses, x-ray technicians and respiratory technicians are walking picket lines today along several hospitals testimony one day strike is the fifth staged at the facilities by the california nurse's association since september. at issue is sick pay, staffing levels, and contributions. >> the cuts have done across the board, across all the hospitals that they have, that they own. i've real -- have made it impossible for nurses. >> in a written statement they said they're disappointed by the strike and promise to provide high quality care while the nurses are on the picket line. the one day strike effects summit campuses and berkeley

and oakland. and mills facilities and burling games. a lack of funding could shutdown plans for a new app for san francisco police. last week we told you about the mental phone app and police chief greg want to develop. it will allow officer r it is t file reports from the field. but the police department now says they don't have enough money in the budget to buy smartphones or similar devices that could run the app. it says if the app is developed officers will need to use their personal phones to take advantage of it. ceremony this morning in the south bay marks the completion of expressway improvement project. >> ready, set, go. county officials and contractors in symbollish traffic lighting ceremony. the project began last september. it adds lanes to both the north and southbound expressway between blossom mill road in

san jose. traffic officials say that should help keep vehicles moving through the intersection. >> help give us what we need so they'll be able to clear the traffic light in one cycle rather than going two cycles or sometimes we are hear waiting 3 cycles to get through the traffic light. >> congress approved funding for the project back in 2006. the runner up in mexico's presidential election still is not conceding. his protesters take to the street in mexico city. hundreds of students march denouncing sunday's vote as fraud. 99% of the votes counted, pleased with 38% of the votes to the 32%. they claim it was voter fraud where votes for other candidates were thrown out. tv icon andy griffin is being remembered today for his southern winston and charm.

kick in. you know this time of year, that means good-bye to the fog and warmer temperatures. we had westerly breeze for a while, now it's more northerly. north at fair field, north at west wind. so from west southwest or north- northwest. 60s and 70s but a lot of 70s. everyone is pretty close here. santa rosa was 49 now 77. temperatures getting close to 88. most locations are running warmer. if you're heading up to the seer a, it's chilly. maybe a little bit warmer after the 4th head towards thursday and friday. in case you're heading in that direction. sunshine and warm weather high pressure decided going to build slightly today and also tomorrow warming continues, scattered low clouds this morning can't stand much of a chance and western high built in and also today. we'll probably level off tomorrow keep it there. sunny and warmer weather.

coast is clear, breezy for some not too bad that wind is northerly. so we get temperatures warming up 92, so it's hot up there. 80s for some. wall to wall as we set clear. off to oakly and brent wood. 84 in wild creek. 72 downtown. 68 degrees san jose check in at 86. santa clara at -- santa cruise beautiful. 76 and closer palo alto. 68 in the city. that's 60s on the coast after some morning fog that's now gone. i think the fog -- looks like cool down thursday and friday, probably saturday, maybe a little bump up temps sunday nothing like the rest of the country. >> it will be clear for the fireworks tomorrow night. >> looks pretty good. >> no problem. >> thanks. the system in richmond oakland and some other bay area cities will be doing extra duty tomorrow on the 4th of july

we'll be monitoring both illegal fireworks and dangerous holiday gunfire. the high-tech system allows police to pinpoint the exact location of gunshots and it can also distinguish between gunshots and the sound of fireworks. police will be giving gunfire incidents top priority. they hope to crack down on italy fireworks. local animal shelters are offering this annual reminder to keep pets in doors during 4th 4th of july fireworks show. every year the humane society says it takes in dogs that have been traumatized by the noise and lights. shelter officials recommend closing the curtains or blind and turning up the radio to block out some of the sound. ahead we'll tell you if people are heading back to the auto showroom it's one of the top indicators of the nation's economic move.

stock markets closed early today ahead of the 4th of july holiday. sharp gains in prices and traders factored in increased expectations for central banks stimulus. the dow closed today up 72. the nasdaq was up 24. s&p up 8. u.s. markets will open on thursday. autotoy makers are releasing their june sales numbers today. report sales of 16% highest level since 2008. volkswagen sales just 35%.

forced sales winds up 7% increase in suv sales and japanese auto makers experience experienced a lowest jump in sales which wasn't surprising since toyota and honda had little inventory. honda is expected to report a 51% jump with toyota sales up 60%. we have an update to developing news from napa county. the chp has rescued a hiker. the hiker had been in stevenson state park since last night. he was in an area with tall trees, not able to leave on his own. the chp says the man injuries are not life threatening. 75 years ago yesterday amelia air heart and navigator disappeared someone over the pacific. the latest search for her plane is getting underway today. international search team and 15 tons of equipment will head for tiny island where they believe she spent her final days after the plane was washed
