>> firefighters responded to a grass fire this afternoon on. it was reported about 2:00 month, news chopper 2 2 these pictures at five. they were able to keep the fire to one acre. investigators are looking for what started an early morning fire outside a home in danville. broke out just after midnight in the backyard of a home on century way fortunates say it started near the j acuzzi. three people inside made it out safely without inarea. investigators say the cause of the fire doesn't appear to be suspicious. in our next half hour a fire does damage to a biling in san francisco. what we have learned about the investigation and the history of the building's owner. > >> new information on an after involved shooting. police identified that man as

17-year-old jarrod huey of vallejo. he robbed a convenience store at gun point and then drove away in a stolen jeep. officers chased him, the jeep crashed and police say he ran away. they found him in a backyard and they say he pointed a gun at them. officers then opened fire killing him. an investigation is underway. oakland police announced a multiagency crack down on a violent gang that put dozens in jail. the operation focused on the burn out family gang. oakland police and federal agents joined to bring down the organization. police say the gang was very violent. it's members accused of drug trafficking, firearms possession and credit card fraud. four of the 65 people arrested also face murder charges. officers say there will be more arrests. >> our end goal is sustainability and dismantling the enterprises. >> reporter: they said the burn

out gang operation was a joint effort at the oakland police, the united states drug enforcement. the secret agency and the da. >> a southwest plane landed safely today after the smell of smoke filled the cabin. it was coming las vegas and was miles out when the captain declared the emergenciy. the faa is working with southwest to try to find what caused that smell. >> in the wake of storms across the midwest utility crews struggling to restore power to millions of customers. the storm system affected more than four million homes and businesses in seven states and the district of columbia. many people in tyler county west virginia have been without power since friday. a heat waiver has settled in on the area. >> somebody called and said they were giving water away here. we came and got some here but

it's 104 degrees in the shade at house right now. >> the president has declared federal emergencies in ohio and west virginia. thousands of fire vacantes are returning home in colorado springs. the officials are calling the aldo canyon fire the worst in that state's history. at one point more than 3200 were forced out from the western edge of colorado springs. now that number is down to three thousand. of those more than 300 people lost their homes to a fire that is now burning more than a week. >> the death toll in the crash of an air national guard fire fighting plane has gone up. four are now confirmed dead. that plane and it's crew crashed in south dakota while fighting a fire. the national guard grounded all of its planes after the crash

trail of that animal this morning the forest service said there was a report of a sighting today about 20 miles north of the location, a woman and her dog came face take face with one. apparently they just looked at each other and then the lion ran away. fish and games said it's possible they are the same animal . ken pritchett. >> the aclu suing the school district claiming that a richmond school is in such bad shape it's failing to serve students. the aclu said the community day school has become run down and at times there is no heat or power. they cited rat and cat feces and fungus on the floor. the school is meant it to help at risk students get back on track but they said there is no math or science teacher. this week the school district board took a step toward putting another parcel

tax on the ballot. they say the board agreed to responsibility $30,000 on a survey. this after the failure of measure k on the june ballot which would have extended a 2008 tax measure,. >> the california court has suspended a sacramento judge's order requiring a juror to submit his facebook postings about a criminal trial. the justices said the juror does not have to allow facebook to turnover his postings about a 2010 trial involving a gang related beating. a judge wanted to see the postings to determine if the five people convicted got a fair trial. the los angeles county da decided not to charge the former commerce secretary in connection with a traffic accident that happened last month. this after two doctors said that brie son had suffer aid seizure before the accident.

. one of the stars of the raiders has died. number 83, ben davidson played 11 years coming to the raiders in 1964 after stinting the packers and the redskins. he played in the 67 super bowl. he was 6'8''. he was known for his play, his mean streak and of course his famous mustache. after he retired from football he enjoyed an acting career. he is survived by his wife and three daughters, he was 72. we also have sad news tonight about andy griffith.

he died this morning at his home in north carolina at the age of 86 president there is no official word on what caused his death we have more on the man who many news of many of us knew as sheriff taylor. >> reporter: you hear the whistle, you think of the name. andy griffith and may berry. >> >> there she is. now how does that look? >> reporter: born in north carolina 1926. after majoring in music at the university of north carolina taught high school, he received a tony for his role in no time for sergeant. in 1957 he made his debut in a face in the crowd. the story of a country boy turned superstar, turned monster. >> whiskey don't get us then women must.

after a private service with family and friends. the president and first lady expressed their sympathies today as well. the president said andy was loved by generations of fans and revered by entertainers who followed in his footsteps. >> the legal battle over a recycling bat the could go to the supreme court. on friday the court of appeals was used to block the plan to evict the city. now they are talking about appealing to the state court. the city has been trying to evict them since 2010 and issued a lease termination notice june of last year. the county grand jury is calling for more inspections of food trucks, the number of trucks has grown over the bay area. in san mateo some 50% from two years ago. the report calls for surprise inspections during working hours of all food trucks before next february and redoing the

county website to find a listing of those food truck that didn't pass inspection. >> the controversy over cell phone antennas is far from over. the city council okayed a plan to put a few on city property. at&t has a plan by the city to put in dozens of small ones on existing utility poles, something that's drawn resistance from people in those neighborhoods. in a letter to the city at&t said it'll likely go ahead with the plans to install the somalian antennas. crash avoidance systems may be doing their job. that's according to a new study released by the highway loss data institute. cars that automatically warn drivers of possible collisions in front of them had fewer accidents but this is interesting, the study found that cars with devices that warn drivers when they are drifting out of their lane can actually lead to accidents. >> concord police debut a new entry in tomorrow's parade.

here say sneak peek. meet the police swat team's new or mored vehicle donated by the federal government. its last -- it rifed in concord banged up and filled with sand. two police officers work to restore the armored car and added emergency equipment. officials say it'll help protect officers when they go after armed and violent suspects. no a critical new report about the job the oakland police crime lab is doing. according to a grand jury the lab is under funded and under staffed. it said the lab has been unable to process more than 3500 orders that could help solve homicides, sexual assault and other crimes in the city. the grand jury found that the city is taking little action to address the backlog of staffing needs. among the recommendations that oakland consaint luis date its crime lab with alameda. >> let's talk about our weather now. rosemary filling in.

. nurses are staging a one day strike at hospitals here in the bay area. it started at seven and involves 3500 nurses who belong to the california nurses association as well as several other techs. the two sides are at odds over health insurance and staffing. >> the cuts in patient care services, has gone across the board, across all the hospitals, the day that they own and have -- and really made it impossible for nurses to provide safe care. >> in a written statement sutter officials said they are disappointed by the strike and promised to provide high quality care while the nurses are onto picket line. for the first time americans will be able to find quickly and in the privacy if they have

the aids virus. today the fda approved the test. it's a mouth swab that can detect the presence of hiv in salivia. the fda has approved other home tests but those kits must be sent out to a lab for analysis. >> about 300,000 lamps are being recalled because they pose a fire danger. the lamps are imported from china and sold at many store across the country including toys r us, bed, bath and beyond and macy's. they feature rotating films with marine or safari themes. there have been 11 reports and three have caught fire. no injuries have been reported. netflix said it's seen a big jump in its streaming video business. the company said its customers viewed a landmark billion hours of online video last month, that's about 38 hours a month.

>> gas prices slightly lie era cross the country just before the 4th of july holiday. for a change they aren't higher here in the bay area. according to aaa the national average for a gallon of regular is $3.33. that's up less than half a cent from yesterday and it's the first increase in three weeks. here in the bay area, the prices are always higher than the national average but a gallon of regular is $3.90 and that's down a penny. eight cents lower than last week. in san jose and oakland the price of regular is $3.75. you can find the least expensive gas in the area where you live by going to our website, ktvu.com. click on the business tab and pick -- pick from the consumer drop down menu. >> so many people plan to see fireworks around the bay tomorrow. let's get to rosemary in for bill. >> fog is expected near the coastline.

. after moss of delays the city of stockton was just declared bankruptcy is hoping to reopen two public pools soon. the pools were supposed to open memorial day weekend but they are still shut down and in one case the water is turned green. the leaders say they are repairing a pump in one of them and should have both pools blue and ready to go in about a week. the ymca is set to operate them but said the economy has played a role in keeping them closed. >> it's a little sad to see a pool full of green water. we started about go weeks ago looking for $17,000. >> about an hour ago we talked

to the director who said that the ymca now has the money to run those pools. > the 49ers asked a judge for a temporary restraining order to freeze $30 million first earmarked for the stadium. the city wants to redirect the money. the 49ers argue it's legally their money because it was set aside by voters in 2010 to help build their stadium. the city of santa clara where the stadium is being built agrees. >> the 2022 olympics will not be in tahoe. the hoped to be considered for the winter olympics in 2022n is video from the last time they were held there in 1960. today the united states committee said it won't bid for the games but look at the possible bid for the 2026 games. >> coming up next on ktvu channel 2news at six.
