we have been following since 4:30 a.m. >> reporter: good afternoon. absolute traffic nightmare on the bay bridge this morning. a mess for commuters and the bridge just reopened before 10:00 a.m. this morning. here is what happened, a speeding vehicle crashed around 1:30 a.m. this morning. officers tried to help the two people in the car. >> they attempted to render aid, the vehicle tried to flee the scene, there was a shooting. the vehicle traveled more down had freeway, it became disabled. there is a ongoing investigation. they are conducting investigations into that. >> reporter: police say one officer fired at the suspect

and the suspect also fired at officers and then threw his gun over the bridge into the water. chp would not confirm but did say the coast guard was looking for the weapon. chp confirms both people in the car were taken to the hospital because of injuries from the crash and the man behind the wheel is going to face charges. meanwhile this investigation made a mess of the eastbound traffic for the morning. eastbound was shut down for some time. a mess for a brunch of folks woo -- for a bunch of folks who couldn't get out of the city. >> i am already late for work. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> of course, i got stuff to do. >> i have no choice. >> reporter: you are going to fight it out? >> yeah. i guess so.

>> reporter: there was a separate police chase out of oakland that also ended up on the bay bridge around the same time. that was a separate incident but again traffic is moving smoothly again on the bay bridge this afternoon. we are live in san francisco, cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. pg&e crews are working to fix a gas leak in san mutarot. -- san mateo. pg&e says a third party construction crew cut through the line. there is no word on when the work might be finished. police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who claimed the life of a bicyclist around 9:30 p.m. last night in east oakland. police say the driver hit the bicyclist who was then dragged more than 100 feet. >> there is no way that the person who hit the bicyclist

did not know they hit somebody. it was a hit and run. they left the scene. >> reporter: police are calling on witnesses to come forward with information about the case. they say the victim was an african american man in his 40s. no word on his identity. officers are looking for a late model vehicle, possibly silver sedan. oakland police are turning their attention to trouble on the water front. officers focused on sunken boats. coming up, you will hear from a man who has role in this issue and how they are connected to copper thefts. illegal fireworks made for a long busy night for fibcrews across the -- for fire crews across the bay area. news chopper 2 captured these images last night. people in a number of neighborhoods were setting off fireworks. police officers were on patrol

but that didn't stop them. firefighters also had two pumper trucks making the rounds. it was a busy night for police, 12 officers were on hand to patrol neighborhoods and they spent much of the night confiscating illegal fireworks. and firefighters say bottle rockets set off a grass fire. 3/4 of an acre burn. the flames briefly trapped a father and his sons. and firefighters caused a brush fire that burned dangerously close to homes. ktvu's lorraine blanco is live to explain how budget cuts to the fire department almost spelt disaster for the

neighborhood. >> reporter: good afternoon. more than 12 hours later and you can see there is still smoke and fire in this field you see behind me. firefighters are keeping an eye on it to make sure there are no flair ups. >> reporter: many neighbors saw this fire coming before the flames erupted. >> you shouldn't light any fireworks off in this kind of conditions. >> thank god for the neighbors doing what they could because it went to within a foot of our fences. the illegal fireworks were set off around 10:30 p.m. last night. >> i was out there and the flames getting circled by the flames. >> reporter: the fire charred his pants and shoes. >> it is very pathetic that we have people that will do this and run and hide in their house and it is more pathetic the

police department don't do anything about it. >> reporter: it is in the hands of fire who are investigating. a chef says losing stations and firefighters cuts down on response time. >> we have to rely on neighboring jurisdictions to put a fire out like this. a large grass fire tends to be labor intensive. >> reporter: look right now. this is video of firefighters putting out hot spots. they will be watching this area all day long. as for the investigation, so far there are no arrests and so citations for the illegal fireworks but as you can see, there is still smoke out here and flames. lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the coroner released the identity of a man whose butty was found yesterday in the

river. the body was discovered near the bridge. investigators say he was a transient. they pulled the body from the river around 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. no word on how he died. deputies are investigating. after a break for the holiday, jurors in the trial of a retired priest resumed deliberations this morning. william lynch faces assault charges. he testified he wanted reverend jerold linder to confess to raping him and his brother in 1975. william lynch told the jury he hit reverend jerold linder after experiencing a fear triggered by memories of the abuse. the next hearing of the ethic's commission of suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi could be over shadowed by a perjury

accusation against mayor ed lee. mayor ed lee testified that he had never spoken to any san francisco supervisor about suspending ross mirkarimi. but web ruwalker said -- deborah walker said she discussed the situation with mayor ed lee. the question is whether rost's attorneys -- whether ross mirkarimi's attorneys will pursue. getting california's high- speed rail approved. lawmakers will vote tomorrow. governor jerry brown's proposal includes $705 million that will luelectrify -- electrify california's high-speed rails. live in oakland where police are not just trying to clean up the streets, they are fighting crime on the water. how they are doing it coming

this fire broke out around 1:00 a.m. this morning in oakland. ktvu news crew arrived before the first firefighters. flames reached 20 feet in the air. we don't know if it was an accident or deliberately set. huge tree fell and damaged a car in oakland on east 20th street around 3:30 a.m. this morning. the branches snapped and landed on a parked car. the wind probably caused this. chain saws cut the tree limbs into smaller pieces. no one was hurt. we have breaking news right now. we are getting reports of a kayaker in distress. looks like a kayak, bright yellow there on the back of

that boat has been rescued. he was in distress and currently being brought to shore. this is in red woodcreek in redwood city. these are live pictures where a kayaker has been rescued and being brought back to shore. as we get more information we will bring it to you. a recount is underway in mexico following the presidential elections. officials called for the recount after they found inconsistencies in the results long with reports of fraud. the count shows enrique pena nieto leading with 38% of the vote. but the second place candidate is refusing to concede after getting 32%. he sites reports the party of his opponent bribed voters by giving them debt cards to a store.

obama's bus tour. this morning there is speculation mitt romney is considering choosing a woman for his running mate. his wife says i love that option. a man is in the hospital after falling from the roof of a school. police were called to the school after 12:30 a.m. this morning. officials say it was a 19-year- old man who fell. he was rushed to the hospital but at this point we don't know the extent of his injuries. he was with a group of friends and it was his friends who called for help. a florida lifeguard has been fired for coming to a man's rescue. he left his zone at the beach on monday to help a man who was struggling in the water. but the man was in a area that lifeguard are not paid to patrol. he was fired on the spot. >> if i have the ability to

help, i am going to help them. i am not going to worry about jurisdiction. >> a second lifeguard was fired when he said he would do the same thing. a third quit in solaidary and four others gave notice. company policy is to call 911 when someone is drowning outside of guarded zones. a search continues in nevada for a lion. a 67-year-old man was attacked while sleeping over the weekend. he is recovering from bites and scratches. officials are looking for a female mountain lion. they are using dogs and motion censor cameras to track the animal down.

. >> reporter: good afternoon. police say the waters haven't been cleaned for 50 years and now it is time to change that. >> reporter: oakland police are not just trying to clean up the streets. they are targeting the water ways. >> lot of vessels sunk. >> reporter: they e teaming up today tagging up to 30 sunken boats. >> creating a environmental hazard. >> reporter: some of the boats people sunk on purpose. >> lot of these folks are out there in the middle of the night getting on land and stealing copper or equipment. >> that is not your boat. >> reporter: officers are also targeting the riffraff. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ]

creek. it happened at the pumping station tuesday afternoon. the problem has been fixed but experts continue to test the creek water for contamination. they paid $1.5 million for dozens of sewage releases during the past three years. an investigation suggests the abuse of disabled parking is getting worse. they are supposed to check for abuses but enforcement has not been kept up. 2,000 placard are confiscated each year. the uss iowa is now officially a museum. a dedication ceremony was held yesterday in los angeles county. over 600 former uss iowa crew members were on hand. the battleship left the bay area on may 26. it opens on saturday. the mom is expected to a-- the
