strike one. here are the strikeouts. hughes got him three times. logan got him to end the sixth. now he's trying to pick up this sidearm slinger with the count one ball, one strike. chavez and ortiz talk it over. 2-1. if you think about 1, the only other time he faced the yankees this year was in april. he left up 9-1.

that was in a game the yankees scored seven in the seventh, seven in the eighth, and won 15-9. still hitless is saltalamacchia. that force-out ends the inning. but it's a four-run seventh on a day that has been certainly memorable for pedro ciriaco. a curtain call here at fenway and a big smile. red sox lead by five.

scoreless innings against oakland last night, then because he wasn't expected to pitch for another couple days, germano was brought up because of the opt-out clause in his contract. now clayton brought back by the red sox because of the double-header today, and each team extending their roster to 26 players. >> joe: they gave up mortensen to get matt holliday back in '09. he went to the rockies, went to oakland, and was traded to these red sox for marco scutaro this past january. he issues a leadoff walk. that won't make bobby valentine happy as -- >> tim: or felix doubront. >> joe: yeah. up by five, a leadoff walk here in the eighth with teixeira coming up.

alex porter of the red sox get the credit. theo says they always do a great job. >> joe: 1-1, down and in. meanwhile, ken, i know you found information on the red sox, if they want to add players or payroll going forward in 2012. >> tim: that's right, joe. i found out today they're about $10 million over the luxury tax threshold. that's not a good thing, because what it means is they'll get penalized 40% for every dollar over that they are. what it means come trade time, if they are buyers, is that essentially they're going to need teams to include money in deals. they'll include money, the other teams will, to get better players in return. so that hurts the red sox too if that's the way they go. >> joe: meanwhile it's 3-1 on nick swisher. this is getting a little uncomfortable for the red sox and their fans here in the eighth. here's a 3-1 from mortensen.
