in some bay area spots but how hot will we get? rosemary joining us now with an answer on that one. good morning. >> good morning to you. we actually are going to take a slight dip in many areas for today. we've got clouds out there, drizzle along the coastline, winds picking up into the afternoon and our highs again a tad cooler than what we felt yesterday. i'll break it down for you, show you those numbers coming up an investigation is underway into a deadly five vehicle chain reaction crash in san mateo. it shut down a section of highway 101 for hours. ktvu's lorraine blanco is there now. >> reporter: i got off the phone with the public information officer from the california highway patrol and he told me a male driver in his late 20s was transported with serious head injuries. he is suffering life- threatening injuries this morning. he says a back seat passenger, a 29-year-old male, died on scene here. now, the deadly crash happened just before 1:00 a.m.

on highway 101 southbound near east poplar avenue in san mateo. it triggered a 2.5 hour sigalert, four lanes blocked as the chp investigated this morning. according to officers on scene here, a pickup truck with no passenger inside was blocking the fast lane. a mazda heading southbound didn't see it and crashed right into it. somehow three other vehicles were involved in a chain reaction crash after that initial accident, but all those occupants walked away okay. chp is investigating but at this point drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash. all lanes reopened just before 4:00 a.m. back out here live, you can see traffic is moving smoothly behind me here on the 101 southbound, all lanes are reopened and the chp is investigating the crash. reporting live in san mateo, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. just a few minutes ago they reopened northbound 101 at a connector ramp. it happened 45 minutes ago on

the ramp from eastbound highway 12 to 101. california highway patrol says the spill was from a small mitsubishi car. firefighters cleaned up that spill and the car was towed away. an oakland man recovering after being shot while leaving a liquor store overnight. the shooting reported around 11:30 last night near 10th street. the victim was hit in the foot. he told police he was heading to his car when he was shot. he did manage to drive himself to the hospital and no arrests have been made. san francisco police looking for the gunman who shot a teenager. the 17-year-old victim was hit yesterday night while standing with a relative at the corner of san bruno avenue and sultan street. he was shot in the chest and his condition unknown at this time. police aren't sure whether the teen was the intended target. a suspicious suitcase that shut down part of a neighborhood in san jose turned out to be harmless. the suitcase was found near a bench in the plaza of a shopping center on lincoln avenue yesterday afternoon. police evacuated shops and blocked off the street to traffic while the bomb squad

took over. they found a typewriter inside that suitcase and determined there was nothing criminal going on. a plane had to be evacuated at the oakland airport because of an angry passenger. you can see the man being taken down the stairs yesterday on this cell phone video sent to us by a viewer. the man was apparently upset that his flight to las vegas was delayed by several hours. according to the airport, the man started arguing with staff and was asked to leave the plane. when he refused, alameda county sheriff deputies were called to remove him. a memorial service will be held this morning for the jockey who died at the alameda county fair. he was killed in a fall during a race on thursday. today's memorial will be held at 10:30 a.m. in front of a racing office at the fair in pleasnaton. a race will also be dedicated to herrera. this is the last day of the fair which is celebrating its 100th year. a warning is in effect for people heading to pleasure point near santa cruz after a great white shark attacked a

man in a kayak. it happened yesterday afternoon beyond a kelp bed where the man was fishing. the man didn't want to talk about the attack but the police showed us his kayak. >> just started to paddle and move the skip through the water when a shark came up and just grabbed the front end of it in its mouth and you can see the big huge head. >> shark expert shawn van summerman was on the beach and ran to help when that attack happened. he says judging from the bite marks and the tooth pulled from the kayak it was a white shark, probably longer than the 13- foot kayak. he says the large amount of wildlife in the bay this time of year probably drew that shark to shallow waters. there was a fatal shark attack more than 30 years ago in a beach in pacific grove 25 miles south of pleasure point. on december 19th, 1981, 25-year- old louis born was attacked by a great white. that shark was about 21 feet long. before that, there had been just four fatal shark attacks

along the pacific coast. none of the victims were surfers. sharks aren't the only danger in local waters. powerful waves may have drowned a man in marin county. according to the independent journal, searchers pulled the body of that man from the water yesterday afternoon. he may have been fishing. there is no word yet on his identity. police in petaluma arrested three men in connection with a burglary at a storage facility. 18 storage units were burglarized at public storage on bay wood drive. police arrested the first man yesterday behind a kmart store. the other two men arrested nearby at a homeless encampment. occupiers will attend a city council meeting tomorrow in hopes of reclaiming a disputed piece of land. 80 protesters and supporters of the group occupy the farm pulled weeds and picked crops at the uc berkeley own field known as gill track. the school and the city of albany cancelled a harvest yesterday when they learned

occupiers would be there. >> the presence of those of us, the community that planted the crops is necessary to keep tending to the crops because contrary to what the university said they are not taking care of them. >> there are some people that are using opportunities, every opportunity they can to make the points that they want to make. >> like the occupiers, albany city leaders and the school want an urban farm on the land but the sides disagree on how and who should run it. occupiers will donate the vegetables they picked yesterday to the group food, not bombs. the albany city council is examining a proposal for a whole foods store south of the gill tract area. the store and an assisted living complex would be built on uc owned property. tomorrow's council meeting is expected to be filled with residents so it's being moved to the albany community center on marin avenue for additional space. internet service could go out as soon as 9:00 tonight pacific time. the fbi is taking down temporary servers put up more than a year ago to stop an

online scam. unsuspecting computer users clicked on a key and infected their computers. high tech giants google and facebook took part in a campaign to alert people about the malware but an estimated 50 to 60,000 people are still vulnerable. now, at ktvu.com, there is a link to the fbi site that will show you if your computer is infected. just scroll down and look for the web link section which is on our home page. a sea of pink is making its way from court madera to san francisco this morning in the final stretch of theavon walk for cancer. more than 2200 walkers started their journey yesterday in san francisco and then camped out in pink tents overnight in courta madera. the route reverses direction today. they will cross back over the golden gate bridge and back into san francisco. the walkers should begin arriving at fort mason at about noon and the closing ceremony scheduled there at 3:00.

inmates at san quentin state prison are holding their own walk for the fight against breast cancer. it mirrors the avon walk. their goal is to raise $10,000 for the avon program. one inmate explained that cancer touches many of the men who are participating. >> it's a way for san ken ton to let -- san quentin to know about rehabilitation, they allow us to do that. it brings out the human side of us that we kind of lost a long time ago. >> the inmates also made artwork and jewelry which will be auctioned off to raise money for the women's cancer resource center in oakland. 7:09. and it's still cool outside but this warmup that we keep talking is coming. how soon will it get here, rosemary? >> we are looking at a pretty big spike in our temperatures, that will come midweek. yesterday warming up quite a bit, low 90s, a few mid-90s out

there and for today, back into the 80s, perhaps a few low 90s, but we are expecting to take just a slight little dip before we rebound as we get back into the workweek. giving you a live look outside our doors this morning, the clouds have rolled in. you can see over the oakland estuary. patchy dense fog reported over santa rosa with calm conditions, visibility down to about half mile. mist and drizzle along the coastline. in fairfield breeze up from yesterday, 21 miles per hour right now and that will help to bring in a little bit of cooler air to your area. 49 degrees in santa rosa right now, 54 in napa, widespread 50s getting outside your door, livermore, san jose, 55 in oakland, 53 degrees in san francisco. the gray will burn back once again, areas right around pacifica, ocean beach yesterday didn't see a whole lot of sunshine. may happen again for your afternoon today.

take a look here, we've got the cloud cover a little bit more extensive than how we started yesterday and then by about 2:00 or so, areas down half moon bay, santa cruz, partly cloudy, mostly sunny skies but it sticks right here along the coastline from about the golden gate down into pacifica, again maybe -- maybe tuscadero. as we get closer to sunset the low clouds back with us. your pacific satellite view, the circulation right here, this is going to break off a piece of energy that will be sliding over the pacific northwest over the next 24 hours or so and that is what is bringing back the onshore breeze, thickening up the marine layer this morning and bringing us a slight little cooldown. in a nutshell, low clouds and drizzle with us this morning, we will see the minor cooldown for the afternoon under mostly sunny skies and then a minor little heatwave will come our way looks like by tuesday, wednesday and perhaps lasting into thursday. afternoon highs for today, 84

good morning to you. we are waking up with a beefed- up marine layer around the bay area but the live look from bay point this morning, mostly sunny skies outside your door. a chinese acrobat survived a terrifying fall from a tight rope. he was trying to walk backwards, there he is walking across that 766-yard tight rope

over gorge in central china. his eyes were covered and no safety harnesses. he slipped and he fell. fortunately it was near the end and the drop wasn't that far at that point. and as you can see him walking out of there, he wasn't seriously injured. he was blaming his slipup on the wind. a plan to build a suicide barrier on the golden gate bridge now qualifies for federal funding. president obama signed a transportation bill that includes federal funding for a suicide prevention plan including safety rails and nets on bridges. the barrier costs an estimated $50 million and supporters have struggled to find funding. critics of the barriers say it would mar the beauty of the bridge but supporters say it would save dozens of lives every year. muni still working on its stroller policy. according to the "san francisco chronicle" new rolls will make -- rules will make it easier for parents to bring babe strollers onto buses. strollers don't have to be folded up anymore and parents can use wheelchair lifts to

board them. still not clear when the policy will be put into place. roadwork in vallejo will shut down parts of a busy interchange overnight. katrinacaltrans will shut down from -- in order to get on 37 from 80, you should keep driving to american canyon road, take the exit and turn around and get back on 80 westbound and jump on from there. house speaker john boehner returned to his home state to campaign for mitt romney. he greeted voters at romney's campaign headquarters outside of cleveland in the battleground of the state of ohio. the latest poll shows president obama has a nine-point lead over romney in ohio. 40% of those surveyed support obama. 38% support romney. the presumptive republican candidate will be in the hamptons for -- long island for a $5000 per person lunch.

tomorrow romney heads to colorado for a fundraiser at a home in aspen and going to visit dick cheney's home in jackson hole, wyoming on thursday. senator marco rubio will hold a fundraiser on friday. senator rubio was in north carolina yesterday signing copies of his book an american son at a bookstore. romney said his campaign is vetting senator rubio as a possible republican vice presidential candidate. president obama will be focusing on iowa, the president speaking at a community college in cedar rapids on tuesday morning. the visit will mark his fourth trip to iowa this year. the hawk eye state is an important swing state for the president's reelection effort. it is one of a handful of states expected to determine the outcome of the 2012 presidential election. this weekend massachusetts congressman barney frank married 42-year-old jim reddy. he is the first congress ma'am

to be in -- congressman to be in a same-sex marriage. nancy pelosi was on the guest list. the 72 frank is retiring at the end of his current term after 30 years in congress. two city council members in southern california filed restraining orders against each other following a romance that ended violately. mario hernandez and maribel de la torre in san francisco -- now they must stay 100 feet away from each other. in a few weeks, archeologists will begin carefully excavating 100 coffins buried on the grounds of valley medical in san jose. the hospital held a memorial service yesterday for the remains at the cemetery which was recently discovered during a construction project. in all about 1500 people were

insurgents killed two dozen people this weekend in southern afghanistan. the roadside bombs targeted both civilians and law enforcement. a bomb blew up killing five afghan policemen responding to a gun battle against insurgents at a checkpoint and two nato service members also died in separate attacks. their nationalities have not been released. secretary of state hillary clinton is lining up countries for financial aid in afghanistan. this morning she traveled to tokyo and received a $3 billion pledge. yestto kabul afghanistan to meat with hamid karzai. $16billion pledged worldwide to help develop the country. >> afghanistan is standing up for itself, of course it will need support and we are pledged to continue our support and to work with you to get more international support. >> nato troops are expected to leave afghanistan in 2014. that's when the afghan government will take over full

security responsibilities. russian president vladimir putin is demanding answers after a flood killed at least 50 people. he has now ordered an investigation to find out if people were given enough warning to get to safety. the floods damaged thousands of homes and blocked railways and roads and dozens of people still missing. tomorrow has been declared a day of mourning. secretary of state hillary clinton is warning the world that syria could collapse. speaking in japan, clinton says time is running out on hope for peace in that country. she says last month was the deadliest for the syrian people in the 16 month revolt against president bashar assad. peace plan for the country is failing. clinton says that acknowledgment should be a wake- up call for everyone. the first results of libya's parliamentary election are expected to come out tomorrow. exit polls suggest liberal alliance is fairing better than islamist parties. turnout was 60%. president obama calls the

election another milestone in libya's political transformation. 200 candidates will win seats to the assembly. they will then choose a government and leader to replace the moammar gadhafi regime. more thunderstorms and rain are forecasted for colorado as people prepare their homes for flash floods and mudslides. heavy rains began falling yesterday and people in larimer county were told they may have to evacuate. this will be the second time they have been told to leave their homes in just a matter of weeks. the first evacuation was from the high park fire which burned 87,000 acres and destroyed 259 houses. >> what can you say? it's mother nature. you either go to fire or flood. you can't control either one. >> yesterday portions of several roads had to be closed as mud and debris blocked those roadways. residents say the fire burned down all the trees and now there is nothing to slow down the mudslides. people are now filling sandbags and placing them around their

homes. officials say evacuation centers may be set up if the conditions get worse. let's talk about our weather here because we are in for a warmup, not quite yet today but coming this week, right? >> a little hard to sum it up. we heated up pretty good yesterday. we are going to warm up again today, not as hot and then as we get into tuesday, wednesday, some of the hottest weather we have felt since mid-june. look at what the numbers sit like outside your door this morning, a few upper 40s in parts of the north bay, we've got a few low 50s along the coast. the rest of us, low to mid- 50s, a few upper 50s outside your door. near livermore, 56 degrees. headed out to support the avon walkers, 54 degrees near san francisco, the golden gate out there with mostly cloudy skies. noontime numbers, upper 50s for the coast, 70s to low 80s for our valley locations. those 80s will be for the warmest spots and then for the afternoon, low 60s along the coastline, partly cloudy skies, partly to mostly cloudy near

highway 101 on the peninsula shut down for hours after a multivehicle accident overnight. good morning, everyone. and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. one person dead and another in the hospital after a major accident in the peninsula. ktvu's lorraine blanco is on 101 in san mateo with what the chp is saying about this chain reaction crash. lorraine. >> reporter: well, claudine, we are learning more information right now about the driver who

was transported to stanford hospital with serious head injuries. he's a palo alto man in his late 20s and people on scene told officers he's originally from argentina. the crash happened just before 1:00 a.m. on highway 101 southbound near east poplar avenue in san mateo. it triggered a 2.5 hour sigalert. four lanes were blocked as the chp investigated. according to officers here, a pickup truck with no passenger inside was blocking the fast lane. a mazda heading southbound did not see it and crashed right into it. the driver of that mazda was transported, a back seat passenger was killed. somehow three other vehicles were involved in a chain reaction but all those occupants walked away okay. chp is investigating but at this point drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash. now, all lanes are reopened here on the southbound 101. reporting live in san mateo, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. a memorial bike ride will be held this morning to honor a

retired sonoma state professor killed by a hit-and-run driver. steve norwick was hit one month ago today while riding his bicycle in penngrove. he died a month later. a 68-year-old man later arrested on felony charges. cyclists will gather at the spreckels performing art center in roanert park at 9:30 a.m. riser was convicted for years ago of murdering his wife nina and burying her body near their home in the oakland hills. the wrongful death lawsuit is on behalf of the couple's two children. attorneys say they filed the suit in the event that riser has hidden assets. in oakland, gunshot victims should recover from his injuries. police say the shot spotter system first alerted police of the drive by shooting on 73rd avenue near holly street. the victim was able to go to a nearby store for help. a witness says the victim was sitting on a couch on the sidewalk talking to other people when he was shot.

meanwhile, oakland police still investigating three separate homicides we told you about yesterday on mornings on 2 and a five hour span friday night they became the city's 77th, 58th and 59th -- 57, 58th and 59th homicides of the year. an arrest has been made in one of those shootings. police say they were forced to shoot and kill a man who had an assault weapon on south sacramento police. police approached two men yesterday evening. two officers say they saw an assault weapon sticking out from one of the men's shirts. one officer fought with the armed man over the gun. during the struggle the other officer shot and killed the man. they detained the second man who was not armed. a community gathering in oakland helped u.s. support grieving -- helped support grieving families in the loss of adams grant. at least nine people have been

killed by northern california -- officer grant 3 1/2 years ago. >> when it comes to the murders of our children and we are here to love them, to love these mothers, support these mothers. >> officer grant was killed on january 1st, 2009 by then bart officer jonas mehserle. a man reportedly fell out of a raft and drown in a sonoma county lake yesterday afternoon. the man could not swim and panicked. his friend tried to rescue him but he disappeared underwater. divers were called in to recover the man's body. the sheriff's department has not released his identity. two months after the death of former nfl star junior seau, tributes continue to pour in. his family and friends have named an community center after

him. a former san diego chargers linebacker died on may 2nd from a self-inflicted gunshot wound but his sister is choosing to remember how he lived his life rather than how he ended it. >> he grew up in oceanside, he played in oceanside and oceanside was his heart and nothing could replace that. >> the dedication was held at the beach because seau's family goes there all the time. the beach was also one of say our's most -- seau's most favorite places. a crime reporter found a new outlet for her work. abby goldsman is now creating works of art out of the murder scenes she once covered. on friday she displayed her exhibit. these feature everything from a trailer park murder to decapitations with gardening equipment. >> i really think there's a very fine line between humor and gore and i think part of it -- it's uncomfortable and

therefore it becomes funny to people because how else do you handle discomfort than with laughter? >> goldman says she has been making the die rahmas for years and got the idea to display them when her husband put a few online and they sold out within minutes. this happened thursday afternoon, police think the same man stole a purse from a woman's car on front street, took a hat from a store on pacific avenue and stole a bike from a back yard on lincoln street. it's described as a white man in his late 20s, early 30s, 160 pounds with short dirty blond hair and rotting teeth. the next few weeks could be noisy for people living near the oakland airport. it's continuing work on its renovation project. during the next few weeks crews will be driving concrete piles into the ground. the work will be done from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. monday through friday. it will begin tomorrow morning and is expected to last until

july 20th. san francisco international will break ground on a new air traffic control tower tomorrow. officials say the 221-foot tall tower and base building will create jobs and keep air travelers safe. ray lahood and the head of the faa will join san francisco's mayor and airport director for tomorrow's event. it is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. usually a 21st birthday is something to celebrate but one young woman in missouri is dreading hers because that's when she says she will be deported. lauren gray just graduated from college with a bachelor of fine arts in dance. her family came here from england when she was four. she won't be considered independent until after her 21st birthday next month. because she can't work legally in the u.s., she will have to leave her friends and family and move back to england. >> i just don't understand why. like where we went wrong to have this happen to us. >> she has launched a petition on change.org to help other

legal immigrants. once she gets her green card she hopes to return and become a professional dancer. the u.s. olympic basketball team is set and ready to defend its golden medal in london. it added blake griffin, james harden. this year's team can be stronger than the gold medal team four years ago. the team is comprised of six forwards, five guards and one center. left off the team was this year's number 1 draft pick, anthony davis of new orleans. antioch is getting ready to sell more than 200 acres of land for conservation. the contra costa times reports the antioch school districts wants to sell nearly 206 acres of land known as molar ranch. it's northwest of the black diamond mines. the district is making a deal to have the east bay regional parks by the -- buy the land within the next few years. a large number of starving young pelicans are starting to turn up on bay area beaches. wildlife officials say the pelicans are weak and thin and are walking right up to people. they say it's sad to see but is

probably part of a normal natural dieoff or survival of the fittest. you can tell a baby pelican from an adult by their brown heads. people are being asked to stay away from them and keep other animals including dogs also away from them as well. the national park service says it won't decide on dog leash rules for another two years. the golden gate national recreation area wants more time to go over its options. one plan reduces offleash areas and bans off leash dogs on federally managed beaches and trains in marin, san francisco and san mateo counties. the marin independent journal reports the park service has gotten thousands of comments from marin dog lovers who do not like the plan. time now 7:39. cool start for some pockets of the bay area, but a slight warmup. rosemary, you are talking about slight. >> yes, slight. if yesterday was a little too hot for you, well, we are going to cool it down just a bit. but we will see another warmup as we get into midweek, giving

-- rosemary orozco with a look at your forecast. >> summerlike weather back in the forecast as we head into your sunday but slightly cooler. low clouds at the coast around the bay this morning, a little bit of drizzle falling along the coast as well. that minor cooldown shaving off temperatures anywhere from three to 6 degrees or so by the afternoon and we have a mini heatwave to talk about. that will be on the way. more on that and your numbers for today coming up. traffic is back to normal this morning after a deadly overnight collision on the peninsula. the five vehicle chain reaction crash happened along highway 101 near east poplar avenue in san mateo. the chp tells us one person was killed and another is in the hospital with critical injuries. he is in his 20s and believed to be a native of argentina who is currently living in palo alto. the first emergency call came in at 12:52 this morning. chp issued a sigalert 20 minutes later. it was finally cancelled and the road was cleared a little before 4:00 this morning. the cause of that crash is

still under investigation. an oakland man is recovering after being shot while leaving a liquor store overnight. that shooting was reported around 11:30 last night on mandela parkway near 10th street. the victim was hit in the foot. we told police he was heading to his car when he was shot. he managed to drive himself to the hospital but no arrests have been made. san francisco police are looking for the gunman who shot a teenager. a 17-year-old victim was shot yesterday evening while standing with a relative at the corner of san bruno avenue and felton street. he was shot in the chest. his condition isn't known at this time and police still aren't sure whether the teen was the intended target. a shark warning in effect in santa cruz. yesterday afternoon a 52-year- old fremont man attacked while fishing in a kayak at pleasure point. the man did not want to talk about the attack but police showed us his kayak. you can see the scratches and bite marks from where the shark bit down. >> started to paddle and move

the skip through the water when a shark came up and grabbed the front end of it in its mouth. >> shark expert shaun van summer -- sean van sommeran was on the beach when the attack owed kurd -- occurred. it was a great white probably longer than the 13-foot kayak. the shark flipped the man into the water but pulled out by another boater. the same area was the scene of a fatal shark attack more than 30 years ago. it happened in pacific grove. this is about 25 miles south of pleasure point. on december 19th, 1981, 25-year- old louis born was attacked by a great white. experts say the shark was about 21 feet long. before this, there had only been four fatal shark attacks along the pacific coast and none of the victims were surfers. a memorial service will be held this morning for the jockey who died at the alameda county fair. jorge herrera was killed in a father during a race on

thursday. today's memorial held at 10:30 in front of the racing office at the fair in pleasnaton. the race also dedicated to herrera. this is the last day of the fair which is celebrating its 100th year. a man reportedly fell out of a raft and drowned in a sonoma county lake yesterday afternoon. he was with a friend on lake benoit west of the town of windsor. the press democratic reports the man could not swim and panicked. his friend tried to rescue him but he disappeared under the water. divers were called in to recover the man's body. the sheriff's department has not released his identity. powerful waves may have caused a man to drown near mcclure's beach in marin county. our camera was there when searchers pulled the body yesterday. the marine independent journal now confirms the victim is a man but no other information on his identity. authorities believe he may have been fishing. a woman had reported her husband had fallen into the water. a suspicious suitcase that shut down part of a

neighborhood in san jose turned out to be harmless. that suitcase was found near a bench in a plaza of a shopping center near lincoln avenue yesterday afternoon. police blocked off the street to traffic while the bomb squad took over. they found a typewriter inside the suitcase and determined there was nothing criminal going on. occupiers will attend an albany city council meeting in hopes of reclaiming a disputed piece of land. 80 protesters and supporters of the group occupy the farm pulled weeds and picked crops at the uc berkeley owned field known as the guild tract. the school and the city of albany cancelled a harvest there yesterday when they learned that occupiers would be there. >> the presence of those of us, the community that planted the crops is necessary to keep tending to the crops because contemporary to what the university says, they are not taking care of them. >> there are some people that are using opportunities, every opportunity they can to make the points that they want to make. >> like the occupiers, albany city leaders and the school

arriving at fort mason at about noon and then a closing ceremony is scheduled to be held there at 3:00. inmates at san quentin prison who are holding their own walk raised nearly $70,000 for the fight against breast cancer. it's the fourth year for the two day event which mirrors the avon walk. their goal is to raise $10,000 for the avon program. one inmate explained that cancer touches many of the men who are participating. >> it's a way for san quentin to let people know that they are doing the rehabilitation, it's all about community, security and everything, and rehabilitation and they allow us to do that. it brings out the human side of us that we kind of lost a long time ago. >> the inmates also made artwork and jewelry which will be auctioned off to raise money for the women's cancer resource center in oakland. an earthquake may have awoken some people in the fort bragg area. the usgs reports a magnitude 4.3 earthquake shook the region after 5:00 this morning.

park fire which burned 87,000 acres and destroyed 259 homes. >> it's mother nature. you either got a fire or you got a flood. you can't control either one so you have to take it in stride. >> yesterday portions of several roads had to be closed as mud and debris blocked those roadways. residents say the fire burned down all of the trees and knew there is nothing -- now there is nothing to stop the mudslides. they are filling sandbags and placing them around their homes. evacuation centers may be set up if the conditions get worse. a wildfire in shasta county now fully contained. the fire burned more than 20 acres and damaged five homes. 100 people evacuated but since been allowed to return back home. the cause of that fire is still not known. jury selection set to begin tomorrow in a wrongful death lawsuit against convicted killer hans riser. riser was convicted four years ago of murdering his wife nina and burying her body near their home in the oakland hills. the wrongful death lawsuit is

bridge now qualifies for federal funding. president obama signed a transportation bill that includes federal funding for suicide prevention including safety rails and nets on bridges. the barrier cost an estimated $50 million and supporters have struggled to find funding. critics of the barriers say it would mar the beauty of the bridge but supporters argue it would save dozens of lives every year. in a few weeks archeologists will begin carefully excavating 100 coffins buried on the grounds of valley medical center in san jose. the hospital held a memorial service yesterday for the remains at the cemetery which was recently discovered during a construction project. in all about 1500 people were buried at that century old graveyard. >> they weren't just, you know, john does and people that -- indigents and so forth, they just came from families and they had to be buried here because they didn't have the

despite the fires and mudslides, folks in colorado had a little fun this weekend. thousands of people got together to throw tomatoes at each other yesterday. 80,000 pounds of tomatoes were used for the food fight which lasted about an hour. many of those tomatoes came from farmers in arizona as well as california who had a surplus of unsellable goods. britain's bradley wigens

driver paid for his crime. the good samaritan followed a car on highway 4 after seeing a man punching a woman who was riding in his passenger seat. the car end bed up at the north con concord bart station and police able to arrest the driver. an oakland gunshot victim should recover from his injuries. police say the shot spotter system first alerted police of the drive-by shooting on 73rd avenue near holly street. the victim was able to go to a nearby store for help. a witness says the victim was sitting on a couch on the sidewalk talking to another person when he was shot. meanwhile, oakland police still investigating three separate homicides we told you about on yesterday's mornings on 2. in a five hour span friday night, they became the city's 57th, 58th and 59th homicides of the year. one man found dead inside a mobile home. police also say two others were shot and killed. an arrest has been made in one of those shootings. police say they were forced to shoot and kill a man who had an assault weapon on a south sacramento street.

it started when sacramento police approached two men in the meadow view area yesterday night. two officers say they saw an assault weapon sticking out from one of the men's shirts. one officer fought with that armed man over the gun and police say during that struggle, the other officer shot and killed the man. they did detain the second man who wasn't armed. a community gathering in oakland help support grieving families in the name of oscar grant. the event yesterday focused on mothers whose loved ones were shot and killed by police. the grant family says at least nine people have been killed by northern california law enforcement since a bart police officer shot and killed oscar grant 3 1/2 years ago. >> in our community when it comes to the murders of our children and we are here to love on them, to love these mothers, support these mothers. >> oscar grant was killed on january 1st, 2009. by then bart police officer johannes messerly. he served 11 months in jail

before being patrolled. police in petaluma arrested three men in connection with a burglary at a storage facility. 18 storage units were burglarized at public storage on baywood drive. police arrested the first man yesterday behind the kmart store. the other two men arrested nearby at a homeless encampment. also a motorcycle stolen from one of the units. two months after the death of junior seau, tributes continue to pour in. the dedication took place just a few blocks from where he lived. the former san diego chargers linebacker died back on may 2nd from a self-inflicted gunshot wound but his sister is choosing to remember how he lived his life rather than how he ended it. >> he grew up in oceanside, he played in oceanside and oceanside was his heart and nothing could replace that. >> the dedication was held at the beach because seau's family goes there all the time. the beach was also one of

seau's most favorite places to visit. antioch is getting ready to sell more than 200 acres of land for conservation. the contra costa times reports the antioch school district wants to sell nearly 206 acres of land known as molar ranch. it's northwest of the black diamond mines. the district is making a deal to have east bay regional parks buy that land within the next few years. tomorrow work on terminal 1 will continue at the oakland airport. it's part of the ongoing $200 million terminal one renovation project. over the next few weeks crews will be driving concrete piles into the ground. the daytime work will be done from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. monday through friday. it is expected to last until july 20th. officials say it could create extra noise for some folks who live in that area. san francisco international will break ground on a new air traffic control tower tomorrow. officials say the 221-foot tall tower and base building will create local jobs and keep some air travelers safe.

transportation secretary ray lahood and the head of the faa will join san francisco's mayor and airport director for tomorrow's event. it is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. the national park service says it won't decide on dog leash rules for another two years. the golden gate national recreation area wants more time to go over its options. one plan reduces off leash areas and bans off leash dogs on federally managed beaches in trains in marin, san francisco and san mateo counties. the marin independent journal reports the park service has gotten thousands of comments from marin dog lovers who just don't like that plan. the uss iowa is now open as a floating museum and memorial in southern california. it had been part of the moth ball fleet in suisun bay until last month when it was towed to the port of los angeles. the iowa served in the pacific fleet during world war ii. some veterans were among those who came to the opening of the museum yesterday in san pedro. >> people are flocking down here to look at her, to tour

border. authorities say they arrested 20 people in arizona with ties to one of mexico's most powerful drug trafficking groups. police seized 3 tons of marijuana, 30 pounds of methamphetamine and $2.4 million. they also confiscated a plane and 14 weapons. police say the drugs were delivered to several states including california. the heatwave on the east coast could start to cool down today. temperatures are expected to fall into the 80s and 90s after days of triple-digit heat. the extensive temperatures have been linked to at least 30 deaths. meanwhile, thousands of people in the mid-atlantic region are still without power one week after severe storms moved through that area. a 4-month-old has died and a 16-month-old is in critical condition after they were left inside hot cars in two separate incidents. both incidents happened in indianapolis where temperatures broke records. police say the temperature inside one of those vehicles was 124 degrees. >> people have got to use

recovering after surviving a wildfire in utah. the fire burned thousands of acres and destroyed the nesting site of a breeding pair of golden eagles. a wildlife expert returned to the nest after the fire was contained and was surprised to find a survivor. the baby eagle was too young to fly and was found severely burned but alive on the 4th of july. >> the flames had to engulf his body because they are on the top of his head, they are on his back, under his wings, on his legs. >> you can see the shafts up here, they were still growing but pretty much done for. >> people who rescued the bird have named him phoenix. they hope to release him back into the wild when he's fully recovered. three well known arch bridges in yosemite could be taken down. want to show you a picture of the 80-year-old stoneman bridge. this is one of the bridges facing removal. it's part of an effort to restore the path of the merced river.

the cause of that crash is still under investigation, but neither alcohol nor drugs is believed to be a factor. ac oakland man is recovering this morning after being shot while leaving a liquor store overnight. the shooting was reported around 11:30 last night on mandela parkway near 10th street. the victim was hit in the foot. he told police he was heading to his car when he was shot. he did manage to drive himself to the hospital. no arrests have been made. san francisco police are looking for the gunman who shot a teenager. the 17-year-old victim was hit yesterday evening while standing with a relative at san bruno avenue and felton street. he was shot in the chest. his condition is unknown at this time. police aren't sure whether the teenager was the intended target. a warning for people heading to pleasure point near santa cruz after a great white shark attacked a man in his kayak. it all happened yesterday after where the 52-year-old fremont man was fishing. the man didn't want to talk about the attack but capital

police showed us his yellow kayak and you can see the crashes and bite marks from where the shark attacked. >> he has just started to paddle when a shark grabbed the front end of it in his mouth. he could see his big huge head. >> a shark expert was on the beach and ran to help when that attack occurred. he says judging from the bite marks, and the tooth that was pulled from that kayak, it was a white shark, probably longer than the 13-foot kayak. he says the large amount of wildlife in the bay this time of year probably drew that shark to those shallow waters. >> there was a fatal shark attack more than 30 years ago in the acilamar state beach in pacific grove, just 25 miles south of pleasure point. on december 19th back in 1981, 25-year-old louis bourn was attacked by a great white. experts say the shark was about 21 feet long. before that, there had only been four fatal shark attacks along the pacific coast. none of those victims were surfers. a suspicious suitcase that shut down part of a

neighborhood in san jose turned out to be harmless. it was found near a bench in the plaza of a shopping center on lincoln avenue yesterday afternoon. police evacuated shops and blocked off the street to traffic while the bomb squad took over. they found a typewriter inside that suitcase and determined there was nothing criminal going on. occupiers are vowing to pack an albany city council meeting tomorrow, in the hopes of reclaiming a disputed piece of land. 80 protesters and supporters of the group occupy the farm pulled weeds, and picked crops at the u.c. berkeley owned field known as the guild tract. the school and the city of albany canceled the harvest yesterday when they learned occupiers would be there. >> the presence of those of us, the community that planted the crops is necessary to keep the ending to the crops, because contrary to what the university said, they're not taking care of them. >> there are some people that are using the opportunities, every opportunity they can to make the point that they want to make. >> like the occupiers, albany city leaders and the school want an urban farm on the land,

but the sides disagree on how and who should run it. occupiers will donate the vegetables they picked yesterday to the group food not bombs. the albany city counsel sill examining a proposal for a whole foods store just south of the guild tract area. the store and an assisted living complex would be build on u.c. owned property. tomorrow's council meeting is expected to be fills with residents, so it is being moved to the albany community center, which is on marin avenue, because there is additional space there. right now a sea of pink is making its way from corto maderra to san francisco in the final stretch of the avon walk for breast cancer. the walk span 2 days through two counties and is close to 40 miles long. more than 2200 walkers started their journey yesterday in san francisco and camped out in pink tents overnight in corta madera. the route reverses today taking participants back over the gold gate bridge and into the city. the walkers will begin to

more thunderstorms and rain in the forecast for colorado as people prepare their homes for flash floods and mud slides. heavy rains began falling yesterday and people in larimer county were told they may have to evacuate. this will be the second time they've been told to leave their homes in just a matter of weeks. the first evacuation was, of course for that hyde park fire which burned 87,000 acres. and destroyed 259 homes. >> what can you say? it's mother nature. you either got a fire or you got a flood. you can't control either one. so you have to take it in stride. >> yesterday, portions of several roads had to be closed as mud and debris blocked roads. residents say the fire purposed down all the trees and there's nothing to stop the mud. officials say evacuation centers may be set up if it gets worse. a wildfire in shasta county is fully contained. the dale fire burned more than 1200 achers and damaged five homes. about 100 people were evacuated but they have since been allowed to return home. the cause of that fire is still not known.

jury selection is set to begin tomorrow in a wrongful death lawsuit against convicted killer hanz reiser. reiser was convicted four years ago of murdering his wife nina and burying her body near their home in the oakland hills. the wrongful death lawsuit is on behalf of the couple's two children. attorneys say they filed that suit in the event that reiser has hidden assets. mitt romney is finishing up his vacation and starting a campaign fund-raising tour today. the presumptive republican candidate will be in the hamptons on long island for a $5000 per person lunch. tomorrow romney heads to colorado for a fund-raiser at a home in aspen. he will then visit former vice president dick cheney's house in jackson hole, wyoming on thursday. speaker of the house john boehner returned to his home state to campaign for mitt romney yesterday. he greeted voters at romney's campaign headquarters outside of cleveland and n. the battle ground state of ohio. the latest poll shows president obama has a 9-point lead over

he is walking backwards over a gorge in central china when he slipped and fell. there he goes. he had no safety harness and his eyes were covered, but fortunately that drop was near the end of the rope, so there you see him, walking out of that brush. he was not seriously injured and he blamed that slip-up on the wind. a large number of starving young pelicans pelicans are starting to turn up on bay area beaches. wildlife officials say the pelicans are weak and thin and walking right up to people. they say it's sad to see but probably part of a normal natural die-off or survival of a fitness. you can tell a baby pelican from an adult one by their brown heads. people are asked to stay away from them and keep other animals including dogs away from them as well. forecasters say tropical storm amelia could soon become a hurricane but the storm isn't expected to threaten land. it's about 550 miles south of mexico. meanwhile, hurricane daniel is even further out at sea, more than 1000 miles away from the

currently living in palo alto. the southbound lanes of 101 were shut down for three hours. a man reportedly fell out of a raft and drowned in a sonoma county lake yesterday afternoon. he was with a friend on lake benoit west of windsor. they report the man could not swim and panicked. his friend tried to rescue him but he disappeared under water. divers were called in to recover the man's body. powerful waves may have caused a man to drown near mclure's beach in marin county. our camera was there when the searchers pulled the body from the water yesterday. the marin independent journal confirms the victim is a man but we have no other information about his identity. authorities believe he may have been fishing and are looking into a report filed by a woman who says her husband fell into the water yesterday. police say an oakland gun shot victim should recover from his injuries. officers say the shot is what alerted police to the shots fired. the victim went to a nearby

store for help. a witness says the victim was sitting on a couch on the sidewalk talking to other people when he was shot. meanwhile, oakland police investigating three separate homicides we told you about yesterday on mornings on 2. in a five-hour span friday night, they became the city's 57th, 58th, and 59th homicides of the year. one man was found dead in a mobile home while two others were shot and killed. an arrest has been made in one of those shootings. a community gathering in oakland helps support grieving families in the name of oscar grant. the event yesterday focused on mothers whose loved ones were shot and killed by police. the grant family says at least nine people have been killed by northern california law enforcement since a bart police officer shot and kill oscar grant throw and a half years ago. >> in our community when it comes to the murders of our children, and we are here to love them, to love these mothers and support these mothers. >> oscar grant was killed back

on january 1, 2009 by a bart officer. mezerly was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and served 11 months in jail. police say they were forced to shoot and kill a man who had an assault weapon on a south sacramento street. it started when police approached two men in the meadow view area yesterday evening. two officers say they saw an assault weapon sticking out from one of the men's shirts. one officer fought with the armed man over the gun. police say during that struggle the other officer shot and killed the man. they detained the second man, who was not armed. a plane had to be evacuated at oakland international airport because of an angry passenger. check out this video. you can see the man being taken down those stairs yesterday on this cell phone video sent to us by a viewer. the man was apparently upset his flight to vegas was delayed by several hours. according to the airport, the man started arguing with staff and was asked to leave the plane. when he refused, alameda county sheriff's deputies were called in and they removed him. a good samaritan who

witnessed a woman being punched by a driver on a highway made sure that driver paid for his crime. pittsburgh police the good samaritan followed a car on highway 4 after seeing that man punch a woman who was riding in his passenger seat. the car ended up at the north concord bart station and police arrested the driver. the next few weeks could be noisy for people living near the oakland airport. the airport is continuing work on its $200 million terminal 1 renovation project. in the next weeks crews will be driving concrete piles into the ground. the daytime work will be done from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. monday through friday. it will begin tomorrow morning and is expected to last until july 20th. san francisco international will break ground on a new air traffic control tower tomorrow. officials say the $221 foot tall tower and base building will create local jobs, and keep air travelers safe. transportation secretary ray lahood and the head of the f.a.a. will join san francisco's mayor and airport director for tomorrow's event

at 11 a.m. antioc is getting ready to sell more than 200 acres of land for conservation. the contra costa time reports the antioc school district wants to sell 206 acres of land northwest of the black diamond mines. the district is making a deal to have east bay regional parks buy that land within the next few years. two months after the death of former n.f.l. star junior seau, tributes continue to pour in. his family and fans have named an ampitheater and community center after him. he died back on may 2 from a self-inflicted gun shot wound but his sister is choosing to remember how he lived his life, rather than how he ended it. >> he grew up in ocean side. he played in oceanside, and oceanside was his heart. and nothing could replace that. >> the dedication was held at the beach in oceanside because say you's family goes there all the time and the beach was one

leash rules for another two years. the gold gate national recreation area wants more time to go over its options. one plan reduces off-leash areas and bans off-leash dogs on federally managed beaches and trails in marin, san francisco, and san mateo counties. the marin independent journal reports the park service has gotten thousands of comments from marin dog lovers who don't like the plan. the heat wave on the east coast could start to cool down a bit today. temperatures expected to fall into the 80s and 90s after days of triple digit heat. the extreme temperatures have been linked to at least 30 deaths. meanwhile, thousands of people in the mid atlantic region are still without power one week after severe storms move through that area. a four month old has died, and a 16 month old is in critical condition, after they were left inside hot cars in two separate incidents. both incidents, though, happened in indianapolis, where temperatures broke records. police say the temperature inside one of those vehicles was 124 degrees.

oakland, mostly cloudy skies, sitting at 55 degrees. time now 9:43. and let's recap some of the top stories this morning. one person died, another is in critical condition after a five- vehicle crash on highway 101 in san mateo. the man is in intensive care. he is in his 20s and believed to have come from argentina. a pile-up shut down the southbound lanes near poplar avenue for three hours. a great white shark attacked a man in his kayak at pleasure point. it happened yesterday afternoon jut beyond a kelp bed. the man is a 52-year-old from fremont. he was fishing at the time. his kayak was damaged but he was not hurt. and there is a memorial service this morning nor jorge herrera, the jockey who died at the alameda county fair on thursday. lorraine blanco is live in pleasanton to tell us how jorge herrera's colleagues and frequents in the horse racing community are remembering him today. lorraine. >> reporter: well, mike, there is a public tribute and a

private memorial today here at the alameda county fairgrounds in pleasanton. you can see right now the flag is at half staff here this morning to remember jorge herrera, the 33-year-old jockey was killed in the final race on thursday. he rode the gray number 8 horse. witnesses say he clipped another horse's heels, fell onto the track over his horse's head and was trampled. friends say he dyed tragically doing what he loved to do. right now we're joined live by chaplain chris who will be presiding over the services. chaplain, good morning. >> good morning. >> tell me what will happen today for this private memorial? >> today there will be a service for the horse racing community, a brief service, about a half hour or so, to remember jorge herrera, a great jockey, a good friend to many of us here, but more than that, a great person. people have only spoken well of george. >> and what's going to go on? there will be prayers, and there will be some remembrances, right? >> yes. we're going to have some scripture reading, a time of

prayer, a time of open sharing for those who knew jorge best, and just -- just really a time for people to bring some closure to this. and we have some counseling and prayer available afterwards, as well. and i also understand that the alameda county fairgrounds is providing grief counseling, also. >> i was going to talk a little bit about that. obviously this is a tragic accident. a lot of jockeys will have to go back to work feeling as they do, which is probably sad and maybe a little bit nervous. what kind of services can you provide counseling wise? >> yeah. well again, i am part of an organization called racetrack chaplaincy of america. we have chaplains here in the united states as well as all over the world. what we provide are social services, any needs that families might have. we conduct memorial services, educational opportunities. and so, i will make myself available, as well as my assistant, to the jockeys. we regularly meet with the jockeys and share prayers with them. they have my number and contact.

people are heading towards the pakistan capitol to protest the reopening of the nato supply line. this is video from friday as people began heading towards islamabad. the supply route was closed in november in retaliation for american air strikes that killed 24 pakistan troops. it was reopened last week after secretary of state hillary clinton apologized for the deaths. the islamist protestors say by taking to the street they are showing their quote hatred for america. secretary of state hillary clinton is warning the world that syria could collapse. speaking in japan, clinton says time is running out on hope for peace in that country. she says last month was the deadliest for the syrian people in this 16-month revolt against president bashar assad. recently kofi anan said his peace plan for the country is failing. clinton said that acknowledgment should be a wake- up call for everyone. the first results of libya's parliamentary election are expected to come out tomorrow. exit polls suggest the liberal

alliance faring better than islamist parties. and president obama calls the election another milestone in libya's political transformation. 200 candidates will win seats to that assembly. then they'll shoos a government and lead -- choose a government and leader to replace the gadhafi regime. vladimir putin is demanding answers after a flood killed at least 150 people. putin flew over the area by helicopter yesterday to view the damage caused by the floods. he has now ordered an investigation to find out if people were given enough warning to get to safety. the floods damaged thousands of homes and blocked railways as well as roadways. dozens of people are still missing. tomorrow has been declare addai of mourning. in mexico, people are taking to the streets to protest the results of that country's presidential election. fraud. they shotted slogans criticizing his party. an election try bruin until will certify the election in november. drug enforcement agents say they've busted a major drug trafficking operation that stretched across the mexican border. authorities say they arrested 20 people in arizona with ties to one of mexico's most powerful drug trafficking groups. police seized 3 tons of marijuana, 30 pounds of methamphetamine and 2.4 million dollars. they mrs. confiscated a plain -- they also confiscated a plane and 14 weapons. police say the drugs were delivered to several states, including california. two construction workers have been killed in a crane collapse on a college campus in texas. it happened yesterday afternoon in richardson, texas at the university of texas at dallas, as strong winds more than 40 miles an hour were passing through. students heard a loud crash. some of them even said it sounded like thunder. >> we heard a loud, just metal just hitting the ground, falling from the ground. i can't really explain the

sound, but you know, a very loud sound. >> and he said right after that, that he heard the workers screaming. no university students or faculty were injured. the crane was being used to build a large building set for classrooms. some historic bridges may be taken out of the yosemite valley. they include some of the most photographed and beloved bridges in yosemite. the bridges may be removed under a proposal to restore the natural flow of the merced river. some say only nature should affect where the river runs through the valley and the bases of many bridges redirect that water. baseball's first half of the season ends today. the giants send tim lincecum to the mound in pittsburgh this northern try to finish it with the win. it was ryan vogelsong on the hill yesterday. going into the game he was leading the league in e.r.a. but gave up three runs to the pirates including this solo shot to left in the fourth. the pirates went on to win 3-1. the oakland a's look to get back to 500 this afternoon after losing to the mariners yesterday.

77th birthday. in india, monks, nuns and followers of the spiritual leader watches artists perform a traditional dance and celebration. a ceremony was held where the dalai lama spec about his goal to promote religious harmony. his actually birthday was on friday every good husband knows they better support their wife. and in that spirit, the annual wife carrying world championship was held yesterday. this was all in finland, 38 couples participated in the finals, and last year's champions won again. and they can drink to their victory as the top prize is the women's weight in beer. and i would err on the lighter side. despite the fires and mudslides, colorado had a little fun this weekend. thousands of people getting together to throw tomatoes at each other. this all happened yesterday and that was what you're looking at, 80,000 pounds of tomatoes used for that food fight which did last about an hour. many of those tomatoes came from farmers in arizona and
