she's out of the hospital after a bout with flesh eating bacteria and telling us how a small cut nearly cost her her life. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. it's the kind of ordeal that's hard to imagine. tonight a bay area 12-year-old is recovering from a near fatal case of flesh eating bacteria. new at 10:00, debra villalon is live in sonoma county where it all started with just a small

cut on her knee. >> a cut that led to a life threatening infection. missy pendington had hoped to show her lamb at the fair. but missy is not getting around the family farm like she used to after she lost the skin on her right leg, almost the leg itself to flesh eating bacteria. >> yeah it was just a cut and they stitched it up. >> reporter: just a one inch cut above the knee needing six stitches. two days later, swelling, pain and fever and back at the local er the doctor rushed to air lift her to children's hospital. >> i knew i had to rush her.

>> by the time we got to the hospital, it was up her thigh and to her ankle. >> reporter: this is the metal missy caught herself on. the bacteria may have been on it but it exists throughout the area. >> it could be in your backyard, it's not just because we're on a farm. >> reporter: now that she's home, she is back to be home but missing her favorite sports. >> just waking up in the morning and going out to see my animals. i feel for my sister because she has to do everything. >> reporter: next up for missy, physical therapy as her skin graft heals. she says her inspiration is giant star buster posey who

he was air lifted to children's hospital. he suffered head trauma, police say they did not site the driver. what if you could predict a traffic accident before it happened? a new technique being used by san jose police appears to do just that. ktvu's janine de la vega explains how an an alter rhythm can help police. >> reporter: police want to be proactive and test whether officers can be at an accident scene before it happens. >> between 3:00 and 5:00 there's a high probability of an accident here so you send officers out between 3:00 and 5:00 to hope essentially prevent it from happening. >> reporter: the department has teamed up with professor joe

moller from santa clara university. he created the alter rhythm that prevents where the accidents will happen. the method is being used to predict crime in morgan hill and los angeles but it's never been used on traffic accidents. these targets show police where the next accidents will happen. >> they will be given high risk areas to position officers corresponding to different time intervals, different days of the week and different months of the year. >> reporter: a team of traffic officers will start using this new predictive policing model in september after six months moller will look to see if police were successful in using this new approach. reporting from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu news. camela harris announced a settlement of more than a half million dollars with three more

companies accused of fixing the prices of lcd flat screen panels. this new settlement includes toshiba. seven other companies have already settled bringing the total damage claims to $1.1 billion. that money will now be divided between 24 states and the district of columbia. a livermore couple pled not guilty in connection with a murder due to a meth lab explosion. evan avilas and lester houston were making hash oil when a flammable liquid exploded. their attorney says the murder charges go too far. the couple has been held without bail since their incident. riser likened himself to moses today. he said he didn't tell his

young children that they killed their mother to protect him. he said for the same reason moses hid the body of a slave master he killed in the sand. closing arguments can begin as soon as tomorrow. a 36-year-old that napa woman accused of killing her boyfriend is in jail tonight. when police arrived they found 62-year-old cali evans mortally wounded. they say that robin jivas stabbed him several times with a kitchen knife during an argument. evans died at the hospital. a double big rig accident brought traffic to a standstill on state highway 92 this afternoon. the crash occurred near half- moon bay shortly before 2:30 today. the trucks blocked a westbound lane for more than two hours and detours were put in place for drivers. news chopper 2 captured these

picture there were no serious injuries. authorities reopened the roadway just after 4:30 today. the battle lines keep getting stronger against ross mirkarimi. he's on one side, mayor ed lee is on the other side. and ktvu's david stevenson tells us why the mayor didn't mince any words today. >> it's totally false. >> reporter: san francisco mayor ed lee fired back hard at ross mirkarimi under allegations that the exsheriff lied twice. >> to try to create a conspiracy is the same strategy. >> reporter: mirkarimi's guilty plea to false imprisonment of his wife aliana lopez was reason enough to remove him. but mirkarimi says the mayor

may have perjured himself last month. the lawyers have agreed to have both women subpoenaed. saying besides the fact that -- this would be the equivalent of tampering with the jury. that jury includes alagi one of 11 supervisors who will determine mirkarimi's fate. alagi today said the claims are untrue. >> reporter: you did not have any conversation with the mayor? >> no, absolutely. >> reporter: in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. it did cool off today by a good five to 8 degrees. these are the average highs.

yahoo is apologizing after hackers managed to steal thousands of pass words. as robert handa tells us security experts say the data

theft should have been avoided. yahoo was dealing with an attack from hackers, a group took 140,000 users e-mail addresses and pass words. it appears others have also been hacked including aol, hot mail and comcast. >> it's upsetting initially when you find you've been hacked because you don't want anybody to undermine your reputation or send the wrong kind of things to your friends on your network. initially i'm upset about it, i wish they could rectify these problems quicker. >> reporter: another victim was more concerned. >> that account is supposed to be deactivated and if it's not, is there a way to try and trace that back to me because i wasn't the guy sending them. >> reporter: today yahoo released a statement acknowledging a security threat. and they are encouraging users to change their pass words.

west nile virus is on the rise in contra costa county. and vector control is taking action to try to prevent it from spreading. crews are fogging several neighborhoods tonight. ktvu's jana katsuyama is live there right now with a warning from health officials, jana. >> reporter: the vector control trucks came down this street about 15 minutes ago to fog. officials are asking residents to do their part to help stop mosquitoes from breeding right here in their own yard. fog rolled through brentwood

tonight. a fine chemical mix, lethal if you're a mosquito. >> every year we do have a few cases of west nile virus and in the past in 2006 two people did die from west nile virus in contra costa county. >> reporter: this year west nile has been found in 20 counties, and over 100 mosquito and dead bird samples have been found compared to 90 last year. the virus is spread through female mosquitoes used to breed. >> i was concerned a lot about the foreclosure houses and the pools. in fact, this house a couple of years ago was in foreclosure and they left the pool with the water. >> reporter: and it isn't just swimming pools and ponds that

are the problem, even a cup of water like this is enough to breed thousands of mosquitoes that can affect people thousands of miles away. >> we would like to remind people to check their backyard for standing water and dump any standing water they have. please dial in and report neglected swimming pools. >> reporter: crews will be out through 11:00 tonight, and they urge everybody to use mosquito repellent when they go out. jana katsuyama, ktvu news. sheriff david livingston is set to outline plans for spending $2 million to increase the number of beds at west county jail in richmond. according to the contra costa times, the money will be spent on a prefabricated building to house 150 inmates. there's a strong presence

of law enforcement in north richmond after two shooting wounded four people near first street and west ruby. about 20 minutes a fourth person was shot about four blocks away. investigators say it appears the shootings are connected and are gang related. wells fargo bank has agreed to pay $125 million to settling a suit. >> the practice of charging minorities is not -- >> some of the settlement money will go to the borrowers who

paid more. the moodies credit agency downgraded italy's credit rating there. moody's dropped the rating two notches over concerns of deteriorating financial conditions in italy. it wasn't just concerns about italy that sent the u.s. markets down today. it was also slow economic growth across the world. the dow ended up losing 21 points after being down more than 100 earlier in the day. this was the sixth trading day in a row that the dow and nasdaq had been down. turning now to the race to the white house, a new national poll shows president obama maintaining a lead over mitt romney. obama with 50%, romney has 43%. analysis concluded that romney has lost ground in the economy in the last month. and many people questioned if

the airline industry is forecasting a shortage of new pilots over the next 20 years. boeing expects there will be a need for nearly half a million new pilots as global economies expand. boeing says 69,000 of those positions will be in north america. and along with pilots aircraft maintenance technicians will also be in demand. boeing also says in some parts of the world there is already a

shortage. in news of the world, in france nine climbers died in the alps. one of the climbers may have accidentally caused the slab of ice to break off triggering an avalanche. in haiti hundreds of people marched in the capital to protest plans to tear down their homes. after 450 houses are marked for demolition to make way for construction of a damn. 15 people were killed and 11 others are missing. helicopters rescued some people who are trapped in the rising flood waters. hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged. it was 50 years ago today

going to help bring other students back to the neighborhood to find out what's going on. we're hopeful. >> reporter: cody's is now being reconfigured with several businesses. john sasaki. a power outage hit parts of san francisco tonight affecting more than 10,000 customers. pacific gas and electric said it started just before 5:00 this evening until western edition, and laurel heights neighborhood. pg & e says it has restored power to some but nearly 3,000 customers remain in the dark at this hour. there's no word on what caused the outage or when full service will be restored. so you know it's the cool down today, you will notice it more tomorrow everyone inland where temperatures could be coming down 10 degrees, 8 degrees. cooler as we head into your friday. here's what's happening right now, you know it's going to be

cooler because right now in liver mother it's running a few degrees cooler than it was last night. the winds are coming offshore and they are pretty significant. gusting at 25 miles per hour. that's driving that moist clean cool marine air on shore. drops the fire danger, cleaning up the air and cools the temperature. sunday will be a little bit warmer but as we go into the weekend and beyond into the next week we're going to be in this pattern. we don't see any red flag warnings, any air quality issues for the next few days. the reason the air quality got bad, the compression of high pressure. the high pressure is gone. with the high pressure gone, not gone but it's leaving slowly there's a system to the north of us it's stretching out the fog bank. that's the key to the whole deal. that fog is coming up over the coastal hills, tomorrow morning and then again on saturday. this is the system you can barely see it right here that's the system that's triggering that fog. and that's why we're getting

cool and cleaner air and lessened fire danger. fire storms in los angeles. this is going to track it all east, if that were the case i think we would have a good shot of seeing showers in our eastern and southern regions through the bay area. shouldn't happen, looks like we're in good shape with mostly to partly cloudy skies. temperatures certainly cooler than they have. marching through the bay area microclimates, 68 degrees or so. mid-70s out toward the berkeley hills. low 80s where there were mid- 90s. mid-80s where there were upper 90s and lower upper 80s and 90s where there were 100s. the cooling trend is entrenched, you will notice it tomorrow as you send the kid off to do what they do and you come back to work. especially in san helena and vallejo. they were doing some big numbers out there yesterday but

steven tyler is stepping down as a judge. tyler made the announcement today just hours after fellow idol judge jennifer lopez revealed that she too is thinking about leaving. tyler says she's enjoyed by part of idol but feels it's time to get doing what he does best which is playing with his band aerosmith. kick off is 50 days away, will construction make it on time? you don't exactly have that green thumb. but your siding? that's pro. finish like a pro with cabot wood stains. cabot...that's pro.

boy the deadline is not that far away but uc berkeley's athletic director says she's still confident that memorial stadium will be ready in time for cal's first football game this season. that is just now 50 days from today and as these pictures from a web cam at the construction site show you can still see there's a lot of work left to complete. the $148 million stadium renovation project. athletic director sandy barber says there will be a kick off. >> whether there's a field there or not. >> that would be a story. mark is here now. giants are returning to action tomorrow night? >> a's in minnesota, giants
