photos. inside the home little akash and his grant parents and a 20- year-old man were trapped. the little boy was dropped off here every day while his parents went to work. his cousin raja says his family is still dealing with the news. >> they're holding it together right now as much as they can. it's pretty hard for them. >> reporter: although tragic things could have been much worse. but thankfully a construction crew quickly aided in the rescue by breaking a window and pulling the 20-year-old to safety. however they were unsuccessful when they were trying to save the grandmother and little akash that were trapped in the back bedroom. >> there were two victims in the back. but they said the heat, smoke were too severe for them to help out. >> reporter: invest >> reporter: investigators say they believe that the fire started in an upstairs closet, a place where akash's grandmother prayed to a shrine.

only 10% contained. governor brown is sending out additional firefighters to supplement calfire crews already on the front lines. the san jose fire department announced today it has been awarded almost $9 million in federal money to pay for more firefighters but that still won't solve the department's staffing problems. new at 6:00, ktvu's robert handa with the uphill battle there for firefighters. >> today the san jose fire department did get some much needed help. money to hire more fire fighters and it comes at a good time because firefighters are spread thin. we have been reporting on a series of suspicious fires here at this park. and residents want fire fighters to protect them and figure out who's causing the fires. sarah kline does not feel safe at home anymore. many residents say they believe the fires are connecting to several homeless encampments.

safe. >> reporter: but a homeless group sham says it plans to fight the removal process starting on monday saying they believe the homeless are the targets of whoever is setting the fires. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. five antioch teenagers accused of staging a spree of mass robberies in con ta costa county are now heading to trial. the robbers targeted 15 businesses last fall in concord. they dressed in several masks. yesterday a judge in pittsburg ruled there is enough evidence to try the teens that are on those videos. they face more than one dozen felony counts. ktvu obtained video showing a confrontation inside a san francisco restaurant that attorneys say led to a violent

with having sex with an underaged girl. 49-year-old kevin hartsville was arrested wednesday at his home in san rafael. according to the marin independent journal he was not deny having oral sex with a 15- year-old girl but he says she lied about her age. after an ongoing war of words, key players from mirkarimi's case came to a meeting of the minds. members of the ethics commission agreed on several issues. on thursday the commission will decide whether people will decide about claims that mayor ed lee lied at a ethics hearing. the rafting gone wild is fueled by alcohol, a facebook page for the event is predicting more than 4,000 people will turn out. last year the sheriff's
